If you enjoy progressive rock from the 60s and 70s, and also like exploring contemporary death metal and progressive metal, then the Italian progressive death metal band Bedsore is definitely our top recommendation. In 2018, Stefano and Jacopo from the Italian band SVNTH decided to form a band to realize this unique idea, which is Bedsore. The band released their debut album, “Hypnagogic Hallucinations”, in 2020. This album's attempt to blend 60s progressive rock with contemporary death metal garnered widespread attention within the death metal scene. Bedsore also successfully signed with the 20 Buck Spin. In 2024, Bedsore released their second full-length album, “Dreaming the Strife for Love”. This album distills the core of 60s and 70s progressive rock and cleverly blends progressive metal, death metal, and other contemporary metal elements. In this album, Bedsore extensively expanded their musical language, exploring a completely new direction for 21st-century metal. Recently, the band officially signed with the renowned French metal record label Season of Mist, and while continuously refining their six-member lineup, they are preparing for the production of Bedsore's third full-length album. We conducted this interview with Stefano, one of the founding members of Bedsore. Stefano shared the story of Bedsore's formation, his creative insights into combining 60s progressive rock with death metal in the 21st century, and his vision for Bedsore's new album and future creative direction.

Hello Jingwen and all the readers! It’s a pleasure to be here. It all started eight years ago, when Jacopo and I, already bandmates in SVNTH, decided to explore a new musical dimension together. In the very beginning, we were strongly inspired by the new old-school wave of the mid-2010s, combined with obscure progressive rock and synth-driven atmospheres. Over the years, our vision has naturally evolved, as our discography clearly shows, though without ever abandoning the original idea. We often joke about the fact that our sound simply became more deeply rooted in our Italian heritage, especially considering the enormous influence of 1960s and 1970s progressive rock on our musical background, and honestly, that’s probably true.
V: Bedsore现在一共有六名成员,这在金属乐队里算比较多的人数,可以分享一下你们的创作过程是怎样的吗?在创作过程中,成员们之间会怎样呈现自己对音乐创作的想法?
Bedsore currently has six members, which is quite a large number for a metal band. Could you share your creative process? How do the members express their ideas about music creation during the creative process?

Being six members is both a very peculiar and relatively new experience for us, since we’ve only been playing with this lineup for a little over a year. Initially, we decided to expand the original formation by adding two more members in order to bring our latest album Dreaming the Strife for Love on stage, properly. Very quickly, however, the chemistry between all of us became so immediate and natural that this evolved into the band’s official lineup. This new setup is incredibly stimulating, because it feels like being part of a sort of electric chamber orchestra, where any timbre or texture becomes possible, potentially, but it can also be tricky if you don’t know how to balance everyone's contributions, especially during the songwriting process. In our case, we compose mainly as a duo (J/S), and then we add all the extra layers, to complete the arrangement. This method has been used since Hypnagogic Hallucinations we were four people, so everything is well-tested by now. That said, with two additional members involved, we’ve become even more attentive to balancing everyone’s role without overcrowding the arrangement. That’s precisely why this lineup is both exciting and intellectually challenging for us.

Compared to traditional death metal bands, you've incorporated many instruments rarely used in death metal, such as synthesizers, keyboards, and even a saxophone, giving Bedsore's music a unique auditory experience. The influence of classic progressive rock is clearly felt in your music. Could you talk about which bands had the biggest influence on your journey to finding your own style?

It has always been part of our initial intention to merge a vision of death metal with instruments that traditionally have nothing to do with the genre. This gives us the possibility to reach new nuances outside the standard death metal formula, and it’s an incredible game changer. Of course, this approach stems from the progressive rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s, and especially to the Italian scene, which taught us a tremendous amount. Artists ranging from the horror maestros Goblin to Premiata Forneria Marconi, Balletto di Bronzo, and Area have all been very important references for us. At the same time, though, it is also the result of an extremely orchestral vision of music, rather than being linked to any specific band. So, there isn’t really one direct source of inspiration; instead, it’s the result of absorbing all these different elements and reworking them through our own critical and personal perspective.

In 2024, you released your third full-length album, “Dreaming the Strife for Love”. On this album, you incorporated many instruments that other bands don’t typically experiment with, creating a sound that strongly evokes the style of 1970s and 1980s progressive rock. Could you tell us how you managed to capture that classic, retro progressive rock vibe on this album?

After the various attempts with our first album and the split release in 2022, Dreaming the Strife for Love represent in our opinion what best embodies this spirit of interplay between musical genres and the fusion of instrumentation. We believe it’s the first album where we managed to condense all these elements into a clear and cohesive formula, rather than something accidental or merely experimental. The result is that you no longer focus on the individual instruments themselves, but rather on the blends they create together, much like in an orchestral arrangement. In fact, having access to many different and sometimes unconventional instruments allows you to endlessly expand your timbral palette. I think this is exactly what happened during the progressive rock era: musicians were genuinely enthusiastic about experimenting with unheard sounds, physically interacting with knobs, switches, and sliders to push the boundaries of what music could become. That’s essentially what Bedsore are still trying to do today - something that has largely been lost in favor of a more simplified conception of music. We aim to push the musical language to its extreme possibilities while still maintaining full control over it.

Most of the songs on this album feature substantial synthesizer playing, and in Bedsore's tracks, the synthesizer melodies are a crucial element in driving the song forward. What did you find most challenging when composing these long and varied synthesizer sections?
S: 最大的挑战在于如何在贯穿始终的合成器段落和我们同样强烈的保持歌曲亲和力的愿望之间找到平衡,也就是保持一种广义上的“流行”风格,即非古典且情感直接。在创作歌曲结构和编曲的过程中,我们或许学到了最重要的一课。这类音乐依赖于极其精准的比例控制:有时哪怕是一点点的过度都会破坏整体的平衡,让一切显得过于沉重或复杂。更具体地说,这种平衡体现在纯粹由合成器驱动的段落相对较少,而且篇幅都不长。它们很快就会演变成完整的乐器合奏,例如"A Colossus..."的中间部分,或是"Fanfare for a Heartfelt Love"的Intro部分。
The hardest challenge was finding the right balance between the ever-present synthesizer sections and our equally strong desire to preserve a sense of accessibility, something “pop” in the broadest sense, meaning non-classical and emotionally immediate. The writing of the structures and arrangements was probably the phase from which we learned the most important lesson. This kind of music relies on extremely calculated proportions: sometimes even a slight excess can overwhelm the formula and make everything feel unnecessarily heavy or overcomplicated. More specifically, this balancing process is reflected in the fact that the purely synthesizer-driven sections are relatively few and never excessively long. They quickly evolve into full ensemble arrangements, for example, the central section of A Colossus... or the introduction of Fanfare for a Heartfelt Love.
V: 我想聊聊"Dreaming the Strife for Love"的歌词。你们的上一张专辑的歌词都是英语,而在这张专辑中,所有的歌词都是用意大利语写的。为什么这次选择用意大利语创作?
I'd like to talk about the lyrics to "Dreaming the Strife for Love." The lyrics for your last album were all in English, but for this album, all the lyrics are written in Italian. Why did you choose to write in Italian this time?
S: 随着乐队风格的演变,我们逐渐意识到英语对我们来说有些局限。为了更自信、更细腻、更深刻地表达某些想法,我们决定用意大利语创作歌词。对于一张从一开始就概念复杂的专辑来说,这一点尤为重要。同时,我们选择保留英文歌名,以便与国际听众保持联系,让不懂意大利语的听众也能沉浸在专辑的概念世界中。
As part of the band’s stylistic evolution, we gradually realized that English felt somewhat limiting for us as a language. In order to express certain ideas with greater confidence, nuance, and emotional depth, we decided to write the lyrics in Italian. This is particularly true on a work that was already conceptually complex from the beginning. At the same time, we chose to keep the song titles in English in order to maintain a connection with the international audience and allow listeners unfamiliar with Italian to still immerse themselves in the conceptual world of the album.

Compared to your previous album, Hypnagogic Hallucinations, the cover art for Dreaming the Strife for Love is very simple and restrained, yet still visually striking. This time, you collaborated with Russian artist Denis Forkas Kostromitin on the album cover. Could you talk about how the collaboration took place? How did you describe the desired cover effect to Denis?

Discovering Denis’ work happened almost entirely by chance. We had already been interested in collaborating with him for quite some time, shortly after concluding our collaboration with Timo. Since Denis had worked with bands close to our artistic sphere, we started exploring his portfolio, and almost magically both the front cover and back cover artworks emerged as perfect matches. What was truly surprising is that both paintings already existed — they were not commissioned works, infact — yet, they fit perfectly with the concept of DTSFL, which itself draws inspiration from the 15th-century illustrated book Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. The cover depicts a floating obelisk suspended in emptiness, the same vision Poliphilo witnesses after awakening from his“dream within the dream”, which also give the name to our opening track Minerva’s Obelisque. The back cover portrays the encounter between a man wandering through a deserted valley and the figure of a dragon confronting him, mirroring the episode in which Poliphilo faces the dragon in battle. For these reasons, the two paintings immediately felt like the perfect visual representation of the album.

Congratulations on signing with the renowned French metal label Season of Mist! Why did you choose Season of Mist? What is the most attractive aspect of this label for you?

It’s a great honor for us to have caught the attention of a label like Season of Mist, so we could only accept this new signing with great enthusiasm, along with everything it will mean for the next album which, by the way, is already fully written and currently in progress – keep an eye on that! What we appreciate most about the label, beyond its undeniable prestige, is the way it consistently maintains such a high standard of quality and modernity across its releases, something not to take for granted, nowadays. We’re extremely motivated to give our very best in this new chapter, and the atmosphere we’re building with everyone involved at the label has been incredibly positive so far.
V: 许多的乐迷通过"Dreaming the Strife for Love"这张专辑认识了Bedsore,最近也有不少乐迷通过Season of Mist的推广认识了你们,越来越多来自外界的关注会让你会对接下来的创作感到压力吗?
Many fans got to know Bedsore through the album "Dreaming the Strife for Love," and recently, many fans have also gotten to know you through the promotion of Season of Mist. Does the increasing attention from the outside world make you feel pressured about your future creative work?
S: 毋庸置疑,这极大地改变了乐队的影响力和知名度,进而也改变了我们对自身的认知。这确实让我们感到更大的压力,但并非消极意义上的。更多的是,我们对今后决定创作的任何作品都感到更强的责任感,尤其是从艺术角度而言。这无疑将是一项挑战,但却是令我们兴奋且充满动力的一项挑战。
Non need to say that this changes the impact and visibility of the band considerably, and consequently it also changes the perception we have of ourselves. It does make us feel more pressure, but not in a negative sense. It’s more about feeling a greater sense of responsibility toward whatever we decide to create from now on, especially from an artistic perspective. It will definitely be a challenge, but one that excites and motivates us.
V: 2025年你们参加了许多的音乐节,比如ZABBATH FESTIVAL,Metalitalia,Incineration Festival 等等,在欧洲许多地方进行过演出。这其中,哪些演出最让你印象深刻?
In 2025, you participated in many music festivals, such as ZABBATH FESTIVAL, Metalitalia, Incineration Festival, and others, performing in many places across Europe. Which of these performances left the deepest impression on you?

We obviously have great memories of all the festivals you mentioned, and more generally of every festival we’ve had the chance to play over the past two years. It’s wonderful to see that there’s still space for events like these, where the sense of community remains genuinely alive. One of the most exciting performances for us this year was definitely at Chaos Descends Festival. First of all because we’ve been fans of the festival for years, so when we received the invitation to perform there, it genuinely felt like a personal milestone for us. Secondly, it was one of the first occasions where we truly tested the new six-member lineup on a larger stage, and that was the moment we realized just how powerful and overwhelming this new setup could be from a sonic perspective. We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all the festival organizers who invited us to perform, and we truly hope to participate in many more events over the coming months.

Bedsore has six members, and you use a wide variety of instruments in your music. More importantly, your music is very complex. When performing, do you find it challenging to present your music live?
S: 正如我们之前提到的,协调六位成员在舞台上的演奏并非易事,因为每个人都需要清楚地了解自己的职责范围,尤其是像第二台合成器或第二把吉他这样的乐器部分,它们的编曲可能会非常复杂。话虽如此,我们并不认为这是消极意味的“挑战”,而是充满激情和启发。我们目前最想改进的地方是为乐手之间的即兴演奏和互动创造更多空间。由于这支乐队最初组建的目的是为了实现不同的目标,我们认为在现场演出的这一方面,我们还有充足的时间去更进一步。
As we mentioned before, managing six members on stage is not always easy, because everyone needs to understand exactly where their role begins and ends, especially for instruments like the second synthesizer or second guitar, where the arrangements can become very dense. That said, we wouldn’t describe it as “challenging” in a negative way; rather, it’s stimulating. The main aspect we’d still like to improve is creating more space for improvisation and interplay between the musicians. Since this lineup originally came together for a different purpose, we think we still have plenty of time to further develop that side of our live performance.
V: 你曾经在不同的采访中提到,Bedsore的音乐在主题上深受意大利恐怖电影的影响。可以说说哪些电影在题材上和音乐上影响了"Dreaming the Strife for Love"这张专辑吗?如果有机会,你们会尝试制作电影配乐吗?
In several interviews, you've mentioned that Bedsore's music is heavily influenced by Italian horror films in terms of themes. Could you elaborate on which films influenced the album “Dreaming the Strife for Love” both thematically and musically? Would you consider composing film scores if given the opportunity?

Answering the second, first: absolutely, yes! I (S) personally studied film composition and Jacopo is also deeply involved in that field. We often dream about having the opportunity to compose soundtracks, both as Bedsore and through the recording studio project we run together. As for DTSFL, themes are very specific and don’t directly align with traditional horror imagery. Hypnerotomachia Poliphili is an extremely demanding and defining concept, so it’s difficult to identify a direct cinematic influence in the same way as we did with our previous works. That said, thinking about it retrospectively, Dreaming the Strife for Love may unconsciously share certain affinities with Fellini’s Casanova, particularly in its suspended, dreamlike atmospheres, which feel very close to those of the Hypnerotomachia. There’s also a similarity in the way love is approached, as a primordial and carnal impulse first, but above all as an intellectual research both for one’s complementary half and for inner peace.

Some fans think of you as the "Italian version of Opeth." Have you heard this nickname before? What are your thoughts on this nickname?
哈哈,不,这是我们第一次听到这个称呼。这真的很酷,不过现在我们感觉肩上的责任更重了!玩笑归玩笑,我们真的很感激被拿来与Opeth相提并论,不过无论如何,我们还是希望人们记住我们的独创性。
Haha, no it’s the first time we hear this monicker. That’s really cool, but now we feel so much responsability after that! Joke aside, we really appreciate the comparison with Opeth, we would be remembered for our originality, anyway.
V: Bedsore的音乐语言非常丰富,可以介绍一下你们最近在听哪些乐队和专辑吗?除了金属乐,你们还喜欢哪些风格的音乐?
Bedsore has a very rich musical language. Could you tell me which bands and albums you've been listening to lately? Besides metal, what other genres of music do you like?
S: 作为日常聆听和研究的一部分,我们不断地接触、发现和重温各种艺术家,他们的音乐往往超越了严格的流派界限,但总体上仍然围绕着摇滚乐这个广阔的世界展开。最近,我们重新发掘了Futuro Antico,这是意大利创作歌手安杰洛·布兰杜阿尔迪(Angelo Branduardi)在20世纪90年代中期到2010年代中期发行的一系列专辑,专注于中世纪和早期民谣曲目。有趣的是,这也成为了我们新专辑的灵感来源之一。
We constantly come across, discover and revisit artists as part of our daily listening and research routine, often beyond strict genre boundaries, although generally still orbiting around the broader world of rock music. Lately, we’ve rediscovered Futuro Antico, a series of albums released between the mid-1990s and the mid-2010s by the Italian songwriter Angelo Branduardi, focused on medieval and early folk repertoire. Interestingly, this has also become one of the inspirations for the new album in the work.
