In the 1980s, extreme metal was still in its early stages of development. Many countries saw the formation of numerous outstanding bands that experimented and created their own unique works. As a result, a vast number of excellent albums were released during that time. Although the recording quality was far from ideal, these bands’ talent was not overshadowed by such challenges. Many of these 1980s albums continue to be passed down to this day and are collected by countless fans. Poland also saw the emergence of many outstanding bands in the 1980s. However, due to limitations in distribution, these exceptional Polish bands remained largely unknown to fans in other countries. Consequently, they were limited to promoting their music and performing within Poland. Over time, many bands disbanded due to financial pressures, and although they had left the stage, yet as the times have evolved, many of these overlooked bands have been rediscovered by record labels, which have relaunched their promotions and re-released their works, granting them global attention and support years later. Today, we’d like to introduce one such band: Sparagmos from Poland. Formed in 1988, Sparagmos was initially founded by a group of young metal enthusiasts. In 1990, the band released their first demo, “Mortal Organic Remains... In 1991, Sparagmos collaborated with the Polish band Lastwar to release a split album. Subsequently, between 1992 and 1999, the band released three full-length albums, evolving from their initial death metal style into a thrash metal/crossover sound. In 2002, the band announced their dissolution, and upon disbanding, they released a compilation album titled “Chronic,” which served as a perfect summary of their previous work. Recently, the renowned Polish label Selfmadegod Records announced a collaboration with the band to reissue their 1994 album “Error.” For this project, Selfmadegod Records created new artwork for the band, demonstrating the label’s commitment to this collaboration. Not long ago, with the assistance of Selfmadegod Records, the magazine also reached out to the band for an exclusive interview!

Hello brother, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, I would like to say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. Sparagmos is a long established band with a long history. How did you first form this band?
Hello to all the metal fans in China. This is our first interview, and I’m very excited about it. Sparagmos was formed in 1988 in Warsaw, Poland. Those were different times. Music was an escape from a very grim reality. We were 17 years old, inspired by what came to Poland from the West, but above all, we were great friends and wanted to be the best. :)
Your band maintains its original lineup, but changed drummers in 1993. Why did the first drummer leave the band? How did the new drummer join the band and are you satisfied with their job? What new creative inspirations did the new drummer bring to the band?
Yes, Tom Marecki left the band, probably because he wanted to become a decent guy. :) Haha. In 1992, he joined Siva. He was an underground legend with different roots, which influenced and changed our music. Later, influences from hardcore and grindcore appeared. We started experimenting, and drugs—just beginning to appear in Poland at the time—also became part of the scene.
You are a group of musicians with rich creative experience, and you have created many classic works. Can you introduce your creative process to everyone? I believe your creative experience will bring inspiration to more young musicians!
The creative process changes with experience and age. We’ve accomplished a lot, not just with Sparagmos. In 2001, I formed Antigama, and Sebastian Zusin founded Rootwater. Alternative projects such as IN and Substance also emerged. But one thing remains constant: in the beginning, there must be a vision—whether it’s a lyric or a guitar riff. Imagination can easily create a whole world in your head, and that is the crucial moment. Then, when the idea reaches the band, something very personal and meaningful can sometimes be lost. But what others add is also valuable. The key is to be careful not to lose the original vision, while staying open to what still fits it. Communication within the band is also crucial—it should be constructive and positive, not closed off.
Your works had outstanding recording effects in the 1990s. Which studio did you record the album in, and which producer made the album for you?
We recorded in many studios. In Poland, we learned how to capture powerful material, and the most important factor was whether there was someone capable of doing it properly. The album ERROR was recorded at the excellent Izabelin Studio. In addition to the engineer, we had a producer overseeing the entire process. However, it was the SMG 2026 reissue that gave this album its full power. We recorded the next album, Conflict, with Spencer Hogewood, whom we met during shows with Voivod in 1996.
Why did your band change their style from early death metal to Thrash Metal/Crossover?
It all depends on the band lineup. What was happening in the world also had an impact. A lot of new things were emerging, and we wanted to explore them. We were not just metal fans—we were open-minded and eager to mix ideas. Fanaticism is not conducive to art. :) At that time, Poland had many great bands such as Vader, Imperator, Pandemonium, and Last War, and we wanted to be different from everyone else. We were also coming off the success of our first album, Invitation from Host of Wrath, as well as many incredible concerts with Western bands, and we felt we were original.

What is the music theme of your band about? Why did you choose this music theme, and what do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?
Lyrics have always been a crucial element of our work. Initially, we told specific stories, often inventing them with an occult theme to stay within the metal genre. Later, however, the lyrics began to address more real topics—our existence, as well as the problems and challenges we face: fear of change, or hatred that destroys and prevents growth. I wrote most of the lyrics, but Sive and Sebastian also contributed a few. For example, on the album ERROR, there is a song called “ECO,” the final track on the record. It is very uncompromising. It was written as a protest against humanity’s treatment of nature, and about the final punishment that may come as a consequence.
You have collaborated with labels such as Dywizja Kot, Metal Mind Productions, ALF to release albums. How did you establish contact with these labels for cooperation? I know that Selfmadegod Records has reissued your album. How did you get in touch with Selfmadegod Records to collaborate? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands? Can you briefly introduce Dywizja Kot, Metal Mind Productions, ALF and other brands?
In the beginning, there was ALF, a time when there were no legal publishers—everyone was releasing pirated music from around the world. We were the first band to be legally released by ALF. Later, our publisher was Metal Mind Productions. That was a huge leap, because the company published Metal Hammer magazine and organized major festivals. Thanks to this, we played many incredible concerts in huge arenas for thousands of fans, alongside bands such as Death, Morbid Angel, Sepultura, Paradise Lost, Master, Obituary, Napalm Death, Entombed, and many others. We became well known in Poland and benefited from strong promotion. KOT Division released our last album, Chronic. That was the summary of our activity—a small but dynamic company run by a metal fanatic. Now SMG releases all our work on CD and vinyl, which is great for us. It is a strong Polish label operating globally, where people respect music and know how to sell it. Karol, the head of SMG, was also the publisher for Antigama, so we already knew each other. He suggested the reissue himself, and we were very happy about it.
You are currently in a state of disbandment. What is the reason for disbanding the band?
We are not playing together anymore; everyone has gone their separate ways. After all these years, we simply felt like doing something new. However, with the reissue, many questions about a possible comeback have come up. We are talking and thinking about it, and there is a chance that Sparagmos will return to the stage for a few shows. We will definitely prepare some new songs and release them online.
Your band is full of retro rhythms and riffs, as well as some beautiful and exciting melodies. Although you have been disbanded for many years, your works have been passed down by more people, which shows that your band's works are very classic. What is your opinion on your own works?
It’s hard for us to judge. We’re always happy when people return to our old songs. They were good and innovative ideas for the ’90s. For me, it was a time of youth and discovering what life was all about. Years later, looking back at our achievements, I’m impressed by how much we accomplished. We were friends, and we have managed to maintain that bond to this day. That is something very valuable. We may not have taken advantage of all the opportunities we were given, but that is often the case, and we have to appreciate what we did achieve. I believe Sparagmos was a very original and unique band, with a different approach to music.
What live performances have you participated in, and which ones left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the atmosphere of the live performances at that time?
We used to play a lot, but I also attended many concerts. I have very fond memories of my first live performances. They often took place in schools, in front of students. It was powerful—music would take over the school, and people would go wild. Later, as I mentioned, we played shows alongside the leaders of the then-powerful global death metal scene. The atmosphere was incredible when Kobong and I played in the Bieszczady Mountains—absolutely insane. Over time, big bands from other genres also began visiting Poland. Tom Waits’ concert was unforgettable. Personally, I enjoy more intimate concerts with good sound.
As an old band from Poland, can you introduce the Polish metal scene in the 1980s and 1990s? What era are you witnesses to? I really want to know about Poland in that era.
It was a truly unique time in Poland. Everything was changing rapidly, and opportunities arose for so many people to play their music. Perhaps that is why so many incredible bands were active back then. The underground scene and the fully analogue nature of communication between people required a great deal of commitment and time. I am still discovering recordings from that era that I do not even remember. Bands such as Vader, Pandemonium, Pascal, Hate, Imperator, and Hazael are just the tip of the iceberg.
As an excellent band, although you have been disbanded for many years, your works have not been forgotten. I will always pay attention to and support your band. I also hope that through this interview, more Chinese fans can understand, pay attention to, and support your band. I also hope to learn more about the stories of Poland in the 1980s and 1990s through you. The interview is coming to an end. Do you have anything to say to your Chinese fans and friends at the end?
It was a great conversation, and I was thrilled to share my stories about Sparagmos and the Polish metal scene of the ’90s. Thank you for your interest and support. Greetings to all heavy music fans in China—support each other. It’s amazing that through art and passion we can connect and share experiences.
