All the people in a sad mood at a funeral, the atmosphere is sad and heavy, all the people attending the funeral are praying in the drizzle for the deceased loved ones, a moment of silence, this is what Apocryphal Wound wants to express clearly in their first album “Mors Advenit Primis Diluculis In Tergo Equi Maledicti” is the first album of Apocryphal Wound, a Portuguese Funeral Doom band, formed by Melkkor, Beyonder and Semog Hulud, with Melkkor playing all the instruments, recording and mixing, and Beyonder doing all the vocal parts. Apocryphal Wound's “Mors Advenit Primis Diluculis In Tergo Equi Maledicti” is one of the heaviest, slowest pieces I've heard from any band Melkor has ever formed. Apocryphal Wound was formed in late 2024, emerging from my need to channel raw despair and philosophical nihilism into music. The name reflects the idea of suffering that is both hidden and fundamental, a wound that festers beneath the surface, shaping existence itself. "Apocryphal" suggests something shrouded in secrecy or outside accepted narratives, while "Wound" symbolizes pain as an intrinsic, inescapable part of life.
V: You are still the sole creator of this band, and you do all the performing and singing by yourself. Can you describe your creative process?
This band was still created by you alone, and all the performances and singing were done by you and me. Can you introduce your creative process?

The creative process behind Apocryphal Wound was structured yet deeply atmospheric. I composed all the instrumental parts first, crafting the guitars and drums to establish the oppressive, mournful tone essential to funeral doom. Once the foundation was complete, I passed the music to Beyonder, who handled all the vocal performances, infusing the songs with his cavernous, otherworldly growls. His voice became the very breath of despair within the compositions. Finally, Semog Hulud enriched the tracks with his keyboards, weaving an ethereal and sepulchral aura that completed the sonic descent into darkness. Each stage of the process was a deliberate step towards creating a sound that felt like a funeral march through the void.

This album was also recorded by yourself in the studio, and the effect is very excellent. Can you introduce your recording process?

The recording process for Mors Advenit Primis Diluculis In Tergo Equi Maledicti was meticulous and immersive. All my instrumental parts—guitars, bass, and drums, were tracked at my personal studio, Studios13, ensuring I had full control over the sound and atmosphere. The vocals and keyboards were recorded separately at Crystal Lake Sound Lab, where Beyonder and Semog Hulud captured their performances in a space tailored for the haunting, cavernous resonance essential to funeral doom. Once all the elements were in place, I took on the task of mixing and mastering at Studios13, carefully balancing every layer to preserve the album’s monolithic weight while allowing the atmospheric details to emerge. Reverb and delay were used sparingly but effectively, ensuring that the music felt like it was echoing through the ruins of a forgotten temple. I also created all the artwork, visually translating the album’s themes of cosmic despair and spiritual decay into imagery that complemented the music’s oppressive aura. Every step of the process was aimed at making Apocryphal Wound a fully realized sonic and visual experience, one that lingers like a spectral presence long after the final note fades.

The logo and artwork for Apocryphal Wound were entirely designed by me, maintaining a cohesive and haunting visual identity for the band. However, the cover art itself was masterfully created by the talented Brazilian artist Márcio Blasphemator. His intricate, pointillist technique brings a raw and nightmarish depth to the image, perfectly encapsulating the themes of death, despair, and inevitable decay that define the album. The illustration depicts a spectral, wraith-like figure riding a ghostly steed, scythe in hand, as if heralding the final doom of existence. The swirling, chaotic lines evoke a sense of perpetual motion, as if the very fabric of reality is being consumed by the relentless march of oblivion. It visually mirrors the music, slow, oppressive, and drenched in an atmosphere of profound sorrow. This image wasn't chosen at random. It serves as a gateway to the album’s sonic descent into existential dread, embodying the weight of funereal lamentations and the spectral echoes of a doomed world.

Yes, this album was released under my own label, Supergoat Wreck-Whordes / Studios13. We were waiting for a response that never came, and we simply weren't willing to wait any longer or let the album sit and die on a computer disk. So, it was released through my label to make sure it saw the light of day.

The theme of the album was chosen by Beyonder, whom I invited to create the lyrics and conceptual direction. He also provided the vocals for the album. Beyonder envisioned a journey into dark, apocalyptic territories, where despair, cosmic punishment, and existential torment are central. The album reflects these themes through vivid, harsh imagery, incorporating ideas of divine wrath, judgment, and transcendence, as well as the clash between destruction and rebirth. Beyonder chose this theme because he wanted to explore the darker sides of existence and the human struggle against an uncaring, cruel universe. Through his lyrics, he aims to express the complex emotions of fear, suffering, and the search for meaning in the face of an overwhelming and indifferent cosmic order. Yes, Beyonder wrote all the lyrics for this album and also provided the vocals. His inspiration came from a mix of philosophical ideas, personal reflections, and a deep dive into religious and esoteric imagery. He was particularly drawn to apocalyptic visions and the existential crisis of humanity, using those themes to weave a narrative about spiritual decay and the cyclical nature of existence.

Although it only has three songs, each one is over ten minutes long, which allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the dark and intense atmosphere we wanted to create. The slow pace and heavy riffs were intentionally designed to evoke a sense of sorrow and despair, much like attending a funeral in a desolate, cold world. It’s a fitting representation of the Funeral Doom style, with its crushing heaviness and gradual progression. Beyonder, who wrote the lyrics and performed the vocals, brought that somber, melancholic, and brutal essence to life. His vocal delivery is intentionally heavy and full of anguish, which amplifies the deep despair that runs through the lyrics and music. The brutality of the vocals perfectly complements the coldness of the riffs, creating a truly immersive experience of sorrow, pain, and reflection. The slower tempo enhances the feeling of inevitability, mirroring the slow march toward oblivion, a theme central to the album’s concept. At the moment, I’m not planning to release any more albums under the name Apocryphal Wound. I’m quite busy with other projects, and my time is stretched thin across multiple commitments. The creative process for Mors Adventit Primis Diluculis In Tergo Equi Maledicti was deeply consuming, and right now, I need to focus on the other work I have going on. However, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of more material from Apocryphal Wound in the distant future. If the right inspiration strikes, or if the conditions align for a new chapter, I may revisit the band’s concept and direction. For now, though, I’m taking a step back to focus on my current endeavors, giving each project the time and attention it deserves. That being said, the future is always full of possibilities, and who knows what may arise in the years to come. For now, I’m just thankful for the support the album has received, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to create and share the music with those who connect with it.
