Since their formation in 2016, Italian black metal band Tulpa have explored themes of psychological trauma, everyday struggles, melancholy, and spirituality through a sound that intertwines Black Metal and Crust Punk. From Unhealed to their 2024 release Temple of Wounds, they have developed a distinctive artistic language that exists between violence and vulnerability, aggression and contemplation. In this interview, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of Tulpa’s thoughts on the essence of black metal, the spiritual dimension of their music, their creative philosophy, and the technical aspects of their songwriting and musicianship.

Tulpa was formed in 2016. Looking back on nearly a decade of activity, what do you think has changed the most within the band? And what has remained unchanged throughout the years?

Hello, and thank you for this interview. Out of the very first line-up that formed back in 2016, I am the only remaining member. At the time, the original idea was to form a purely d-beat band, even though all the members came from the local black metal scene. However, my background was instantly inseparable from the songwriting process, and so, gradually, the black metal influence claimed more and more space within the tracks. Before we recorded our first EP, Matteo joined the band, and today he handles bass and backing vocals. What has changed the most is the overall atmosphere within the band. This is partly due to the average age of the members being lower now, but mostly because we have a much more solid line-up with a shared vision. What has remained unchanged is the primordial intention behind our art. We have received feedback from people telling us that we have changed or evolved, yet the core essence remains clearly recognizable, and I completely agree with that sentiment.

V: Tulpa的主题涉及“过去的创伤、忧郁、精神性与日常挣扎”。为什么这些议题始终吸引着你们？

Tulpa’s themes often revolve around past trauma, melancholy, spirituality, and everyday struggles. Why do these subjects continue to resonate so strongly with you?

H: 即使创伤已被处理，只要这个过程真正完成，伤口也已愈合，它仍然是你人生故事的重要组成部分。它会在当下持续回响，影响你的日常生活、人际关系以及你对世界的认知。只要这种动态存在，我们就感到有必要将其融入艺术创作中，从而为其提供一个安全的空间。这也能让听众产生共鸣，并最终进行他们自己的内在探索（如果他们觉得有必要的话）。

Because even after a trauma has been processed, provided that this process has actually been completed, and its wounds have healed, it still remains a major part of your life story. It continues to echo in the present, shaping your daily routine, your relationships, and your perception of the world. As long as this dynamic is active, we feel the need to encapsulate it within our artistic creation, thereby providing it with a safe space. This also allows the listener to resonate with the process and eventually do their own piece of inner work, if they feel the need to do so. .

V: 在当代社会中，你们认为黑金属最重要的价值是什么？

In contemporary society, what do you believe is the most important value that black metal can offer?

H: 我认为这是我们内心最狂野一面的合法化。我们每个人都拥有这种狂野的本性，但由于禁忌或社会压力，我们常常倾向于压抑它。这种压抑会对个人以及整个社会的精神发展造成有害影响。更糟糕的是，它会导致人们无法识别这种阴暗面，任由它在意识之外肆意妄为。

I believe it is the legitimization of our own fiercest side. We all possess this fierce nature, but due to taboos or societal pressure, we often tend to suppress it. This repression has deleterious effects on individuals and on the spiritual development of society as a whole. Or, even worse, it causes people to fail to recognize this dark side, allowing it to act outside the sphere of conscious awareness.

V: "Temple of Wounds"这个标题十分耐人寻味。“伤口的神殿”象征着什么？

Temple of Wounds is a highly evocative title. What does this “Temple of Wounds” symbolize for you?

H: 这个标题唤起了尘封已久的痛苦记忆，指向直面自身创伤的根源。它被定义为一座“神庙”，正是为了强调这部深刻内省之作的神圣性。在我们看来，这是一条令人恐惧且难以承受的道路，但若想开启真正的成长，却又必不可少。

This title evokes a core of ancient, painful memories and refers to the confrontation with one's own traumatic origin. It is defined as a "temple" precisely to emphasize the sacred character of this deep, introspective work. From our perspective, it is a terrifying and overwhelming path, yet an absolute necessity if one wishes to trigger authentic growth.

V: 有评论提到"Temple of Wounds"围绕“Samsara（轮回）”的概念展开。这个主题是如何进入你们创作视野的？

Some reviews have suggested that Temple of Wounds revolves around the concept of Samsara. How did this theme find its way into your creative vision?

H: 佛教的轮回概念，即痛苦、疾病、死亡和重生的循环，是我们所有人都会经历的有为存在固有的模式，它为描述那些内省并致力于理解自身和所处世界的人们所遭受的折磨提供了一个非常有效的框架。一旦你理解了它，就很难不注意到它存在于你自身生活经验和我们所能感知的现实的根基之中。我们可以在人类知识的每一个方面观察和感受到它的分形本质。

The Buddhist concept of Samsara, the cycle of suffering, sickness, death, and rebirth inherent to conditioned existence, which we all experience, offers a highly effective framework to describe the torment of those who turn their gaze inward and commit themselves to understanding both themselves and the world they inhabit. Once you understand it, it becomes difficult not to notice it at the foundation of your own life experiences and the reality we are capable of perceiving. We can observe and sense its fractal nature in every single aspect of human knowledge.

V: Tulpa的音乐融合了Black Metal与Crust Punk元素。你们是如何在两者之间找到平衡的？

Tulpa’s music combines elements of Black Metal and Crust Punk. How do you strike a balance between these two styles?

H: 在我看来，这两种音乐风格联系非常紧密，有时很难分辨它们的界限。对我而言，两者的融合完全是自然而然发生的。创作时，我不会花太多时间思考如何平衡这两种风格，也不会试图区分哪一种更突出。我对歌曲的内在意图把握得非常清晰，其他的一切都由此自然而然地流露出来。

In my opinion, these two genres are deeply related, and at times it is difficult to perceive where the boundaries lie. For me, the fusion of the two happens completely spontaneously. When I am writing, I do not spend too much time thinking about how to balance these two aspects or trying to label one nuance over another. I have a very clear grasp of the underlying intention of the track, and everything else flows naturally from that.

V: 你们通常是从Riff、旋律、节奏还是概念开始创作一首歌曲？

When writing a new song, do you usually begin with a riff, a melody, a rhythm, or a conceptual idea?

H: 它可以是您提到的任何元素，但通常情况下，我先从一个概念想法开始。然后我会弹吉他，直到弹出一个完美体现这个概念的第一个即兴重复乐段，从那之后，我再继续创作歌曲的其余部分。

It can be any of the elements you mentioned, but generally, I begin with a conceptual idea. Then I play the guitar until a first riff comes out that embodies that concept perfectly, and from that point forward, I develop the rest of the song

V：Tulpa的旋律既具有攻击性，又保留了强烈的忧郁感。你们在吉他写作上会特别关注哪些因素？

Tulpa’s melodies are both aggressive and deeply melancholic. What aspects do you pay particular attention to when composing guitar parts?

H: 正如我在之前的回答中提到的，对我来说最重要的方面是最终的曲目必须与它背后的核心意图完全一致。

As I mentioned in my previous answer, the most important aspect for me is that the final track remains entirely consistent with the core intention behind it.

V：当创作涉及个人创伤与脆弱情绪时，是否会让你们感到不适，或者恰恰相反——是一种释放？

When your music deals with personal trauma and emotional vulnerability, does the creative process ever become uncomfortable, or is it more of a form of release and catharsis?

H: 对我而言，创作过程的开始意味着歌曲背后的情感素材至少已经部分被处理过。否则，就好比是去抓一块燃烧的余烬。作曲和录制对我来说是整个创作过程的最后阶段，是构建、组织和最终定格内心体验的阶段。

For me, when the creative process begins, it means that the emotional material inspiring the song has already been processed at least in part. Otherwise, it would be like grabbing a burning ember. Composing and recording the track is the final stage of the work for me, the part that structures, organizes, and seals the inner experience.

V：如今越来越多的黑金属乐队开始融合后黑、Shoegaze甚至电子元素。你们如何看待这种发展趋势？

Nowadays, more and more black metal bands are incorporating post-black metal, shoegaze, and even electronic influences into their music. How do you view this ongoing evolution of the genre?

H: 只要音乐充满灵感、真诚且品质上乘，我绝对支持黑金属融合其他元素，哪怕是截然不同的流派和概念。反之，如果这种尝试并非出于真正的实验精神，而只是为了追求病毒式传播，我会觉得既乏味又恼人。如今平庸的音乐已经太多，背景噪音也太多，够了！

As long as the music is inspired, authentic, and of high quality, I am absolutely in favor of black metal incorporating outside influences, even with the most disparate genres and concepts. On the other hand, I find it tedious and irritating when the attempt is not the result of genuine experimentation, but rather a blatant pursuit of virality. We already have far too much mediocre music out there, too much background noise, enough is enough.

V: 在你们看来，真正优秀的黑金属作品最不可缺少的品质是什么？

In your opinion, what is the one quality that truly great black metal can never do without?

H: 黑金属必须具备宣泄的特质。否则，它就只是一层单调乏味、毫无价值的垃圾。无论鼓点达到多高的BPM，或者乐队花多少钱在舞台上搭建一个纸糊的恐怖屋，都无关紧要。任何真正了解金属乐的人都能一眼识破伪劣产品。

Black metal cannot lack a cathartic quality. Without it, it remains nothing more than a monotonous blanket of worthless sloppiness. It does not matter how many BPMs the blast beats reach or how much money a band spends to build a paper-mâché horror house on stage. Anyone who truly knows what Metal is can smell a poser instantly.

V: 如果让你们用一句话概括Tulpa的精神内核，你们会怎么说？

If you had to summarize the spiritual core of Tulpa in a single sentence, what would it be?

H: 一座献给那些目光超越一切的人们的纪念碑

We have just finished writing the songs for our third album. Following our performance at the Under The Black Sun Festival in Germany, where we will premiere one of the new tracks, we will take a period of isolation to finalize pre-production and begin tracking.
