Today's interview is with Melkor's band Mala Mors. Formed in 2024 by Melkor, Mala Mors is Melkor's band. Melkor handles all guitars, bass, vocals, production, mixing and mastering, and invited drummer Jeroen to help with the drum parts, and Catherine Theodore wrote the lyrics for the band. Catherine Theodore wrote the lyrics for the band, and in 2024 the band's first official album, “Mindscapes of Madness”, was released on Melkor's own label, Supergoat Wreck-Whordes / Studios13, with its cold, unforgiving melodies, which seem to put everyone in fear of death. Mala Mors was formed in 2024 as a solo project. I created it entirely on my own, handling all the guitars, bass, vocals, production, mixing, and mastering. Jeroen joined me for the drums, and Catherine Theodore took care of the lyrical review, but the essence of the project is very personal. The name Mala Mors is Latin for "Bad Death" or "Evil Death." It reflects the dark themes surrounding mental health struggles, inner turmoil, and the often invisible pain that consumes the mind. It’s not about death in a literal sense but rather about the slow, agonizing feeling of being trapped inside one's own suffering.

The creative process of Mala Mors was deeply personal and born from a place of darkness. It all started because of a disturbed and sick character who has been haunting me, a figure known as Sacerdos Magus, the twisted mind behind a horrible band called Antiquus Scriptum. This individual steals music from the internet and then overlays it with his horrendous vocals. He’s been stalking me for years, even threatening me with death, and the case is currently in court. As twisted as it may sound, this relentless persecution became a brilliant source of inspiration for the album. This project is not just music, it’s a cathartic release. Each song reflects the mental decay, frustration, and claustrophobic feeling of being chased by someone who refuses to let go. I channeled all that chaos into the riffs, the haunting melodies, and the rawness of the lyrics. It was about turning pain into power, transforming harassment into art. Beyond that, I also explored themes of mental health, self-destruction, and the dark corners of the human mind. I recorded the album entirely at Studios13, layering every instrument with the precision needed to match the emotions I was pouring into it. Jeroen’s drumming added the aggressive heartbeat, and Catherine’s lyrical review helped refine the words, but the essence remains raw, unfiltered, and painfully honest. The result is an album that feels like a descent into madness, a reflection of what it’s like to be trapped in your own mind, haunted not just by external demons but by the ones you create from the scars they leave behind.

Yes, I recorded the entire Mala Mors album myself at Studios13, my personal studio. The recording process was intense and immersive, reflecting the raw emotion behind the music. I wanted the sound to feel organic and honest, not overproduced or polished, to capture the essence of inner turmoil and psychological decay. I started with the guitars, using Neural DSP plugins to achieve a dark, heavy tone that felt oppressive but dynamic. I recorded multiple layers to create a wall of sound, sometimes doubling or even tripling riffs to give that suffocating atmosphere. The bass was equally important, carrying a distorted, almost gritty tone that sits right at the edge of breaking apart, mirroring the lyrical themes. Jeroen handled the drums, and his performance added a brutal, unpredictable heartbeat to the album. We wanted the drums to sound alive, with natural imperfections that enhanced the feeling of instability. I recorded and mixed everything meticulously, ensuring that each hit and transition carried emotional weight. Vocals were the most personal part. I recorded them alone, often late at night when the atmosphere was darker, and I could channel the emotions fully. I used multiple layers of vocals, screams, whispers, and spoken word, to create a feeling of desperation, as if the listener is trapped inside my head. The mixing and mastering process was challenging but rewarding. I spent countless hours tweaking frequencies, adjusting reverbs, and experimenting with textures until everything sounded exactly as I envisioned. The goal was not just to create a metal album but to make the listener feel something, whether it's discomfort, sadness, or catharsis. In the end, the recording process was more than just a technical exercise; it was a form of therapy, turning pain into something tangible.

This album was released on your own label. Do you have any other ideas about re releasing this album on another label?

For now, Mala Mors remains exclusively released through my own label, Supergoat Wreck-Whordes / Studios13, but I’m definitely open to re-releasing it through another label if the right opportunity presents itself. My goal is to reach a wider audience, and having the support of a larger label could help achieve that. However, I’m very selective about who I’d collaborate with, it has to be a label that truly understands the vision behind the project and respects its artistic integrity. One unique and essential element of this release is the exclusive ebook that comes with the album, similar to what I did with Erzsébet Nadasdy. The ebook contains dark, immersive stories in both English and Portuguese, diving deep into themes of mental illness, despair, and the chaotic nature of the human mind. These stories were actually the foundation for the album’s lyrics, every song was inspired by one of these narratives, creating a strong conceptual link between the written word and the music itself. Most of the stories are pure fiction, but there is one notable exception, "The Dark Hymn of Sacerdos Magus", a haunting blend of reality and fiction. It was inspired by a real individual who became a persistent, toxic presence in my life. Ironically, this disturbing experience provided the perfect fuel for the emotional intensity of the album. The other stories in the ebook, though fictional, reflect the same dark and emotional weight. They explore themes of inner turmoil, psychological breakdown, and the desperate search for meaning in a chaotic and unforgiving world. This ebook is exclusively available to those who purchase the album on Bandcamp, adding a deeply personal and exclusive dimension to the project. Re-releasing this album under another label would mean sharing these stories, and the raw emotions behind them, with a broader audience. If the right label came along, one that could help amplify this experience while respecting the essence of Mala Mors, I’d definitely consider it.

Yes, the logo of Mala Mors is entirely my own creation. I deliberately kept it simple yet impactful, with a raw, minimalist aesthetic that reflects the essence of the project, dark, emotional, and unpretentious. I wanted something that would be instantly recognizable, easy to remember, but still carry an ominous, haunting presence. Sometimes simplicity leaves a stronger mark than intricate details. As for the album artwork, I also designed it myself. Visuals are just as important as the music when it comes to expressing the overall concept of Mala Mors. I wanted the artwork to feel like an extension of the music and the stories, something that immediately pulls you into the dark, melancholic world I created. I experimented with different textures, muted tones, and somber imagery to evoke the same emotions that run through the album: anguish, isolation, and the struggle against inner demons. When I create an album, I see it as a complete experience where every element, the music, the lyrics, the stories, and the visuals, needs to align. I always strive for that coherence, so designing the artwork myself allows me to ensure that every detail reflects the soul of the project.

The theme of Mala Mors revolves around the fragility of the human mind and the weight of emotional suffering. It’s about diving deep into the darkness that many fear to confront, the kind of pain that lingers in silence and echoes in solitude. I chose this theme because it’s raw, honest, and something that most people, at some point in their lives, can relate to. I wanted to give a voice to those unspoken struggles, turning despair into something tangible through music. Yes, I created the entire lyrical section myself. The lyrics are deeply personal but also universal, weaving between introspection and metaphor. I drew inspiration from real experiences, dreams, nightmares, and the overwhelming sensation of being trapped in one’s own mind. Each song tells a different story, a different layer of the human condition, from the bitterness of loss to the consuming void of isolation. Through this music, I’m not necessarily looking to provide comfort or resolution. It’s more about embracing the chaos and finding beauty in the brokenness. It’s for those who carry their scars like a second skin, a reminder that they are not alone in the abyss.

It represents the chaotic whirlwind of emotions and mental turmoil that I’ve experienced, a reflection of what it feels like to be on the edge of sanity. The cold and ruthless atmosphere was intentional; I wanted the music to feel raw, almost uncomfortable at times, because that's the reality of struggling with one's own mind. It’s not supposed to be pleasant; it’s supposed to be real. I’m very satisfied with how the album turned out. The blend of melody and brutality was crucial to conveying that push-and-pull dynamic between hope and despair. The death metal elements bring the aggression, the rage, and the outburst of frustration, while the melodic passages represent introspection and melancholy. It’s not about being technically impressive; it’s about expressing genuine emotion in a way that feels authentic. It’s an album that requires multiple listens to fully grasp all the layers, both musically and lyrically. I wanted it to leave a lasting impression, something that resonates long after the final note.

Does Mala Mors band have any new work to do in 2025? Can you share some information with everyone?

At the moment, Mindscapes of Madness is very likely to remain the only album under the name Mala Mors. The concept and thematic depth of this album were so personal and intense that I’m not sure if there’s a natural continuation of that narrative in the near future. However, life has a way of throwing unexpected twists our way, and if something significant happens, whether an event, a personal revelation, or a new source of inspiration, it could spark the need to explore this theme further.
For now, though, I’m focused on other projects, and I think Mala Mors will remain a one-off, a specific chapter in time that I’ve poured everything into. Perhaps in the distant future, when I feel that I have something else to say, I might revisit this band and its themes. Who knows what the future holds? But for now, Mindscapes of Madness stands as the final, encapsulating work of Mala Mors.
