Today's interview was with the veteran Technical Death Metal band Profania from Germany. Founded in 1993, Profania was formed by guitar/singer Thomas Sartor and initially focused on the Death Metal style, releasing some highly acclaimed works. The fast pounding beats and complex suffocating improvisational repetitions make up most of the music on this album. If you like Old School Death Metal bands like Vader, then you will definitely love the early works of Profania. Over time, the band has added more technical elements to Old School Death Metal and evolved from a Death Metal band to a Technical Death Metal band. After changing their style, the band released their third official album "The Art of Sickness" in 2017, This album incorporates more aggressive and complex playing techniques while maintaining the framework of earlier albums, forming the band's unique voice. Currently, the band is creating a new album, and we believe it will bring more surprises to all fans in future albums. Hello, and thank you for having me! We’re truly honored to be featured in a Chinese magazine for the first time. It’s great to connect with metalheads from all over the world! Profanity was founded in 1993 in Augsburg, Bavaria (Germany) by Thomas Sartor, who remains the heart and soul of the band. In the early years, Profanity’s sound was more influenced by old school death metal, but over time, it evolved into a more technical and brutal form. By the time we released The Art of Sickness, we had fully established our sound: complex, aggressive, and uncompromising technical death metal.

Now only Thomas Sartor is the first generation member left in the band, and all the other members have been replaced. You only joined the band in 2024. How did the new members join the band?

Yes, Thomas is the last original member, but every musician who has joined Profanity has helped carry the band’s spirit forward. Lucas joined in 2017 as both bassist and vocalist. In 2022, the band decided that he should focus solely on vocals, which was a great move because it allowed him to unleash all his energy on stage. Tobias joined in 2024 as a drummer. Lucas knew him and immediately said, “He’s the guy we need.” Tobias is highly talented and plays in multiple bands, bringing a modern technical death metal style to Profanity. I joined in 2024. Initially, I was just helping out for some gigs, but in autumn, I officially became the new bassist. This lineup is incredibly strong, with each of us bringing different experiences and influences, making our music even richer. By the way, I can't forget Armin—even though he is no longer an active member of the band, he is still a real part of Profanity. You can't talk about Profanity without mentioning Armin.

Yes, we all have strong backgrounds in extreme metal: Lucas is active in multiple bands like Distaste and Endonomos and has a deep understanding of extreme vocals. He is also a multi-instrumentalist—he can do everything! Tobias plays in Spire of Lazarus, Abstractyss, and brings a modern, technical, and fast drumming approach. I have played for years with Nephren-Ka and Soul of Sheol, shaping my style in brutal and technical death metal. I have been playing music and metal for decades—I started in 1997, and my first live show was in the same year. I love playing live, and I believe that’s the secret to improving as a musician: play, play, and play! If you want to start playing music, practice a lot and play with others, but most importantly, play live—jam sessions, gigs, rehearsals… And don’t be afraid to explore different styles beyond just metal! Thomas is fully dedicated to Profanity and is the mastermind behind our compositions. Since we live in different countries, we work a lot remotely. We exchange tracks, practice individually, and when we meet for gigs or studio sessions, we are already fully prepared. This is the new reality of extreme metal—adaptability and efficiency are key!

Every album of your band has shown significant improvement in recording quality, which is closely related to the progress of the times. With the changes of the times, recording technology has become more comprehensive. Which studio did you record your albums in and which producer made the albums for you?

We are very lucky to have Lucas in the band, because he is not only our vocalist but also our sound engineer and producer. He runs his own recording studio "Deep Deep Pressure Studios", so our recent albums carry his personal touch. The turning point for Profanity’s sound was The Art of Sickness, wich was recorded by Christoph Brandes in his "Iguana Studios" also known for his recordings with Necrophagist, where we embraced a modern technical death metal production style. Technology has made recording easier, but the real challenge is knowing what kind of sound you want and how to bring it to life. Now, we no longer need to stay in a studio for one or two weeks to record an album. It’s a great improvement, but honestly, I miss those days when we used to spend so much time in the studio together with the whole band.

Our music is not just technically complex—it’s also emotionally intense. Many of our lyrics were originally written by Martl Bauer, our former bassist. They were deeply personal and introspective, dealing with human struggles and dark emotions—they were also closely tied to Martl’s personal life. We don’t just write about gore or horror; our lyrics explore psychology, existential themes, and raw emotions. Now, I will take on the challenge of writing some lyrics myself. Lyrics, artwork, and music all go together.

Our logo was designed by Martl our former bass player around 1996. We wanted it to have it clear and brutal—recognizable, strong, and direct, just like our music. For The Art of Sickness, the band worked with Pär Olofsson, a legendary metal artist who captured the album’s technical, brutal, and dark themes perfectly. For Fragments of Solace (2020), the artwork was created by Federico Musetti. His artwork reflects the deep, existential themes of the album. Our artworks are always a crucial part of our albums, as they help visually represent the intensity and atmosphere of our music. Every band wants to have its own unique style in that aspect, too.

How did you get in touch with Apostasy Records, Cudgel, Brickhouse Music and other labels to collaborate on your album? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands?

Thomas:
It's best to start from the beginning. We have to go back to 1996. We were writing new songs and we really wanted to release them on CD. That was a huge thing for us at the time and not easy to realize. We didn't have the Internet as we know it today and it was way more difficult to get information. At that time, everything was still done via handwritten letters that were constantly sent back and forth. Anyway, our goal was clear: we wanted to go into a professional studio for the first time and then release the songs on CD. We actually took the old-fashioned way and used the phone book, the “yellow pages” back then, and looked for a recording studio. We found one not far from us and it was Brickhouse Studio, which was run by Albrecht Felsenstein. We recorded our first CD “Shadows To Fall” there and he offered us the opportunity to release the CD under his label “Brickhouse music” and that made it a bit easier for us with some business things. But technically speaking, “Shadows To Fall” is a DIY release. Cudgel became aware of us through the release of “Shadows To Fall” in 1997. They also made it possible for us to play at the cult open air “Fuck The Commerce II and Fuck The Commerce III”. Those were great festivals!!!! And I must also mention that without Cudgel Agency there would probably have been no European tour for us with Cryptopsy, Haemorrhage and Spawn, which took place in 2002. Under Cudgel Agency the following Profanity releases have appeared: 1999 a split 7'with Lividity, 2000 our second full-length release “Slaughtering Thoughts”. Our mini EP “Hatred Hell Within” was released in 2014 via Rising Nemesis Records. We had known Nasar from RNR for quite a while and at a show in Switzerland we got talking about how we had three songs that we would like to record and release as an EP. This was then put into practice at the end of 2014 in the form of “Hatred Hell Within” EP. When it was time for another full-length release, we asked Apostasy Records from Germany if they would be interested in releasing it. We had only heard good things from Tomasz and when we got his approval for the release, we were all very happy about it. In April 2017, “The Art Of Sickness” was finally released on Apostasy Records. As for our current release “Fragments of Solace”, we wanted to try something “new” or go back to
our roots...so to speak. “Fragments of Solace” is a DIY release. We released FoS as a digi-pack CD and as vinyl in an elaborate gatefold cover. But it has to be said that we had a lot of help with the promotion from Anubi Press, Luca Pessina did a great job. We are currently busy writing the songs for the next full-length release, about when this release will appear.... let us surprise you, it remains exciting

You’re absolutely right! Profanity has always had a Suffocation/Disgorge/ Hate Eternal/ Deeds of Flesh ....-style brutality, but over time, we have integrated more technical and progressive elements. All our friends and fans know that Thomas is a huge fan of Suffocation—we can’t even count how many times Profanity and Suffocation have shared the stage together. They are not just an inspiration to us, but also good friends of the band. That being said, you could add so many bands to our list of influences that it would be impossible to name them all. I wouldn’t want to forget any band, so I’d rather leave the list open-ended—it would be huge! Our early albums had a strong old-school death metal foundation. Our recent works feature more technical, progressive, and dynamic elements, while still maintaining brutality. We don’t force change—we evolve naturally, keeping what we love while constantly pushing our limits.
V: 你是一支参加过许多音乐节的老乐队。哪些音乐节给你留下了深刻的印象?你能介绍一下当时的现场气氛吗?2025年你还将参加哪些音乐节?
You are an old band that has participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? What other music festivals will you participate in in 2025?
D: 就我个人而言,到目前为止我只在舞台上表演过一次Profanity,很明显那一次有对我影响最大的是——那里没有竞争!我们很幸运能与这么多令人难以置信的乐队同台演出并见到这么多伟大的乐队。所有的演出都很重要——不只有一场演出脱颖而出。即使你在前面演奏,在只有20个人的情况下,你必须尽你最大的努力,让每个人都能享受这一刻。我们很感激有机会在欧洲各地演出,对我们来说最重要的演出总是下一个——因为这是我们必须做好准备并做到完美的一个。2025年,我们计划在几个欧洲国家(法国,德国、瑞士等)。我们还在为十月/十一月的巡演做准备,当然,我们梦想有一天能在亚洲演出!我们已经为2026年制定了一些计划,所以我们可以说我们很幸运能有这样的机会在我们前面。
Personally, I have only played once with Profanity on stage so far, so obviously, that one had the biggest impact on me—no competition there! We’ve been lucky to share the stage with so many incredible bands and to meet so many great people. All gigs are important—there isn’t just one that stands out. Even if you’re playing in front of only 20 people, you have to give your best and make the moment amazing for everyone. We are grateful for the chance to play all over Europe, and to us, the most important gig is always the next one—because that’s the one we have to be ready for and make perfect. For 2025, we’re planning more festival appearances in several European countries (France, Germany, Switzerland, etc.). We’re also working on a tour for October/November, and of course, we dream of playing in Asia one day! We already have some plans for 2026, so we can say that we’re lucky to have such opportunities ahead of us.

It has been five years since your last album. Does your band have any new work to do this year, such as creating or recording new works? Can you share some information with everyone?

Yes! A new album is in progress, and we are working hard on it! We have many projects tied to this album, and we want to accomplish things that the band has never done before. We have a lot of ideas, and we’re excited about where this is going!
