Carcass乐队是第一支开创了使用医学方面的材料作为音乐主题的乐队，从他们的歌词，歌名，专辑都感受到这方面浓重的味道，后期他们也开创了Melodic Death Metal这种风格，无论是在Goregrind时期，还是在Melodic Death Metal时期，Carcass都做出了自己杰出的贡献，就是因为Carcass这样的开创性使得后期大量追随他们的创作理念，比如Exhumed这类乐队就是受到Carcass乐队影响很深的乐队之一，那么今天就给大家介绍一支同样受到Carcass影响到乐队Lipoma，组建于2021年的Lipoma乐队，由Max Pierce一个人组建并且发行了大量的作品，2022年乐队的第一张专辑“Horrors of Pathology”由巴西的地下厂牌Old Grindered Days Records限量300份发行，这张专辑发行之后也得到了广泛的好评，随后2023 - 2025年乐队发行了两张正式专辑和大量的Spilt，EP专辑，Lipoma乐队最大的特点在保持着Goregrind的血腥的感觉，如果你喜欢Last Days of Humanity乐队的话，你一定不要错过Lipoma作品，经过处理的演唱与Hans的风格非常相似，同时Lipoma也受到了Carcass乐队的影响采用医学方面的素材创作，这样让Lipoma乐队的作品既血腥又病态，但是这支乐队最大的特点就是Max Pierce还采用了Melodic Death Metal的创作手法，相对于来说Melodic Death Metal的创作手法占比更大一些，这样也使得乐队的作品更加的具有旋律性，也更加的吸引歌迷，体现出完全不同的一种“病态”美，Lipoma乐队是我个人认为2020年之后最优秀的乐队，也是最具有代表性的乐队，很难有一支这样的乐队在保持Goregrind的血腥之外还有Melodic Death Metal这种风格的旋律，如果让我用一句话来总结Lipoma的作品的话，那么就是一个伪装成外科手术医生的变态杀手，听着旋律优美的歌曲，进行着一场外科手的杀人现场！前不久杂志与Max Pierce取得联系进行了一次专访！

Carcass was the first band to pioneer the use of medical themes in their music; this influence is evident in their lyrics, song titles, and albums. Later on, they also pioneered the melodic death metal genre. Whether during their goregrind era or their melodic death metal era, Carcass made outstanding contributions. It is precisely because of Carcass’s pioneering spirit that so many bands later followed their creative vision. For example, bands like Exhumed are among those deeply influenced by Carcass. Today, I’d like to introduce another band influenced by Carcass: Lipoma. Formed in 2021, Lipoma is a one-man project led by Max Pierce, who has released a substantial body of work. In 2022, the band’s debut album, Horrors of Pathology, was released in a limited edition of 300 copies by the Brazilian underground label Old Grindered Days Records. The album received widespread acclaim upon its release. Subsequently, between 2023 and 2025, the band released two full-length albums and numerous split releases and EPs. Lipoma’s defining characteristic is its retention of the gory essence of goregrind. If you’re a fan of Last Days of Humanity, you definitely shouldn’t miss Lipoma’s work; the processed vocals bear a striking resemblance to Hans’s style. At the same time, influenced by Carcass, Lipoma incorporates medical themes into their lyrics, making their work both gory and morbid. However, the band’s most distinctive feature is that Max Pierce also employs melodic death metal compositional techniques. Relatively speaking, these melodic elements make up a larger portion of their work, giving the band’s music greater melodic depth and making it more appealing to fans, while showcasing a completely different kind of “morbid” beauty. In my personal opinion, Lipoma is the finest and most representative band to emerge since 2020. It’s rare to find a band that maintains the gore of Goregrind while also incorporating the melodic elements of Melodic Death Metal. If I had to sum up Lipoma’s work in a single sentence, it would be: a psychopathic killer disguised as a surgeon, performing a murderous operation while listening to melodically beautiful songs! Not long ago, the magazine reached out to Max Pierce for an exclusive interview!

Hello Max, it's nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is your first time being interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let me say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. Lipoma band was founded by you alone in 2021. How did you form this band?

M: 大家好。能接受中国杂志的采访，我感到非常荣幸。在西方，我们并没有太多机会与中国朋友进行交流，所以这次采访意义非凡。Lipoma是由我于2021年创立的，时至今日，整整五年过去了，它依然是一个一人乐队。我在纽约布鲁克林生活期间，趁着新冠疫情封锁期创立了这个乐队。当时我正在其他乐队担任鼓手，同时也为我的个人项目Boar Taint录制作品。然而，这些项目无法满足我对纯粹、病态的Goregrind音乐的渴望。我想要创作强度更高、完全拥抱病态主题的音乐。Lipoma正是由此而生。

Hi everyone. It is a pleasure to be interviewed by a Chinese magazine. We do not get the opportunity in the West to interact with people in China as much as we should. So this is great. Lipoma was founded by myself in 2021, and still to this day after exactly 5 years remains a one-man band. I started this band during the COVID lockdowns while I was living in Brooklyn, NY. I was playing in other bands (as a drummer), and I was also recording material for my other solo project Boar Taint. However these other projects did not satisfy my cravings for pure, pathological goregrind. I wanted to make music that had more intensity and completely embraced the pathological theme. So that is how Lipoma was formed.

V: 你是乐队里唯一的成员，因此可以按照自己的想法创作歌曲。你能介绍一下你的创作过程吗？

You are the only one in the band, so you can create songs according to your own ideas. Can you introduce your creative process?

M: 我通常先编写鼓点，这样可以直观地把握歌曲的长度以及整张专辑的时长。这些鼓点并不完美，缺少滚奏、重音等细节。完成粗剪后，我会录制两条分别置于左右声道的吉他音轨。如果是完整专辑，我会录制两条节奏吉他和两条主奏吉他音轨。接着录制贝斯，最后录制人声。最后，我亲自完成所有混音和母带处理。

I usually start programming the drums, this allows me to visualize the length of the songs and the duration of the total release. These drums are not perfect, they are missing rolls, accents etc. Once a rough track is done, I record two guitar tracks panned left and right. For full length releases I record 2 rhythm and 2 lead guitar tracks. Then I record the bass and finally the vocals. Finally, I mix and master everything myself.

V: 这些工作都是你自己完成的吗？也就是说，专辑的录制也是在家里完成的吗？录制过程进展顺利吗？

Did you complete all the work by yourself, so did you also complete the recording of the album at home? Is the recording process progressing smoothly?

M: 所有的录音、混音和母带处理都在我家的卧室里完成。我没有专业录音室设备，只有一个连接在台式电脑上的简易音频接口。我使用Reaper作为数字音频工作站（DAW），搭配常规插件。我的吉他和贝斯都是配备主动拾音器的ESP品牌，编程鼓声则使用Krimh Drums。麦克风只是一支Shure SM58，配合原生插件的音高移调功能。就是这些基础装备！

All the recording, mixing and mastering, happens in my bedroom at home. I do not have studio equipment, just a simple audio interface plugged into my desktop computer. I use Reaper as my DAW and regular plugins. My guitar and my bass are both ESP with active pickups and for programmed drums I use Krimh Drums. The microphone is just a Shure SM58 with stock plugin pitch shifter. Basic stuff!

V: 你们乐队的标志设计非常漂亮。是谁为你们设计的这个标志？为什么你们大部分专辑封面都使用医疗素材？

Your band's logo design is very beautiful. Who designed this logo for you? Why do you use medical materials for most of your album artworks?

M: 谢谢！我的本意是让它显得有趣多于美观。我画了个草图发给Rotting Head，由他负责设计。我告诉他要确保字迹清晰——不像大多数金属乐队的标志那样晦涩——并且要让它看起来像个脂肪瘤。他做得非常棒。

Thank you! My intention was for it to be more funny than beautiful. I drew a rough sketch of it and sent it to Rotting Head who designed it. I said make it legible, unlike most metal logos, and make it look like a Lipoma. He did a terrific job

V: 脂肪瘤、肿瘤、外科手术、病理学、血腥场面是你的音乐主题，为什么选择这些主题？你是在这个领域工作吗？

Lipomas, Tumours, Surgery, Pathology, Gore are your music themes, why did you choose such music themes? Do you work in this field?

M: 我对医学主题着迷。我曾学过几年医，所以在培训期间接触了很多相关知识。我也对疾病着迷，它是人类存在不可分割的一部分。它虽带来如此多的痛苦与折磨，却像我们呼吸的空气、吃的食物一样寻常。当然，像Carcass、Lymphatic Phlegm、LDOH、Dead Infection等乐队在创作goregrind音乐时，已将这一主题永载史册。因此，这些乐队显然给了我灵感。但我与医学和病理学主题之间也存在着个人联系。

I am fascinated by medical themes. I studied medicine for a few years so I was exposed to a lot of that in training. I am also enthralled by disease, it is an inseparable part of human existence. It is something that causes so much pain and suffering, yet it is as normal as the air we breathe and the food we eat. Ofcourse bands like Carcass, Lymphatic Phlegm,LDOH, Dead Infection etc. made this theme immortal when they were making goregrind music. So obviously I am inspired by these bands. But I also have a personal connection to the theme of medicine and pathology.

V: 你曾与 Bizarre Leprous Production、Rotten Foetus Records、Grand Vomit Productions 以及 Old Grindered Days Records 合作。你是如何与这些厂牌取得联系并合作发行专辑的？你对这些厂牌的工作满意吗？

You have been with Bizarre Leprous Production，，Rotten Foetus Records，Grand Vomit Productions，Old Grindered Days Records How did you get in touch with these labels to collaborate on releasing albums? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands?

M: 我喜欢与世界各地的众多厂牌合作。这是因为每个厂牌都能带来新的东西：灵感、粉丝群体、人脉，当然还有友谊。我一直与所有发行过我音乐的厂牌保持联系。我会尽可能地为它们宣传。有些厂牌主动联系我，有些则是我主动联系的。这与其说是商业交易，不如说是友谊的邀约。当我与厂牌合作音乐时，我喜欢和他们讨论发行事宜、封面设计，我认为这才是应有的方式。

I like to work with many labels around the world. This is because every label brings in something new: inspiration, fanbase, connections, and of course friendship. I stay in touch with all the labels that have released my music. I try to promote them as much as I can. Some labels contacted me and some labels I contacted. It's really more of a friendship request than a business transaction. When I am working with a label on music I like to talk to them about the release, the artwork, I think it's the way it should be.

V: 首先，恭喜你们今年发行了最新的Spit厂牌专辑。你们的作品绝对是最独特的。你们将旋律死亡金属与Goregrind融合成了一种我前所未见的风格。你们既保留了旋律死亡金属的美妙旋律，又保留了Goregrind的残暴感。你们是如何想到要融合出这种独特风格的？对自己的作品有什么看法吗？

First of all, congratulations on releasing your latest spit album this year. Your work is definitely the most unique. You have combined Melodic Death Metal and Goregrind in a style that I have never seen before. You have preserved both the beautiful melody of Melodic Death Metal and the brutality of Goregrind. How did you come up with this idea to combine your own style? Do you have any opinions on your own works?

M: 我早期的作品纯粹是Goregrind。但作为一名音乐人，我一直对旋律很感兴趣，所以走这条路是必然的。我喜欢Melodic Death Metal，尤其是Carcass的后期作品、At the Gates、Impaled、Intestine Baalism，但也喜欢早期的Carcass、Lymphatic Phlegm等。既然如此，何不将两者结合呢？我讨厌唱歌，反正我也唱不好，所以音高变调人声是最佳选择。我对自己的作品集很满意。我觉得每张专辑都独一无二，我努力不断进步并融入新的影响，以保持新鲜感。总有一天我会灵感枯竭，到时候就会停下来。但我觉得自己还能坚持几年。希望Lipoma能坚持到10周年。

My very early releases were pure goregrind. But I have always been interested in melody, as a musician so it was inevitable to do that. I like melodic death metal especially late Carcass, At the Gates, Impaled, Intestine Baalism but I also like old Carcass, Lymphatic Phlegm etc. So why not combine both. I hate singing, I can't sing anyway, so pitch shifted vocals is the way to go. I am happy with my discography. I feel every record is unique, I try very hard to progress and incorporate new influences, to keep things exciting. At some point I will run out of ideas and I will stop. But I think I still have some years in me. Hopefully Lipoma can make it to 10 years.

V: 今年会有新作品发布吗？能和大家分享一些信息吗？

Are there any new works to be released this year? Can you share some information with everyone?

M: 今年夏天，我将通过乌克兰的Reality Fade厂牌发行我的第四张全长专辑。我之前还没向任何人透露过专辑名称，现在就来公布吧。这张专辑将命名为"Infernal Wounds of Ravenous Flesh"。相比以往的作品，这张专辑风格更黑暗、更凶猛，音色更粗犷，音量也更大。之所以这样做，是因为我上一张专辑"No Cure for the Sick"的风格稍显柔和。我很高兴Reality Fade将以CD和黑胶唱片的形式发行这张专辑。我将自行发行卡带版本。希望乐迷们会喜欢。

This summer I am releasing my fourth full length with Reality Fade from Ukraine. I have not revealed the title to anyone so here it goes. It is going to be called Infernal Wounds of Ravenous Flesh. It is a darker record than the rest, more vicious with a more raw sound with a louder sound. I had to do that because my previous album, No Cure for the Sick was a little on the soft side. I am very happy that Reality Fade is releasing it on CD and vinyl. I will self-release on cassette tape. I hope fans enjoy it.

V: Lipoma 绝对是世界上最独特的乐队之一。我是你们的忠实粉丝，我会一直追随并支持你们的乐队。我也希望能听到更多关于你们作品的消息。采访即将结束。最后，你们有什么想对中国的粉丝和朋友们说的吗？

Lipoma is definitely one of the most unique bands in the world. I am your loyal fan and I will always follow and support your band. I also hope to hear more about your works. The interview is coming to an end. Do you have anything to say to your Chinese fans and friends at the end?

M: 是的，我想说，非常感谢像你这样的人聆听并推广我的乐队。我的意思是，有太多努力奋斗的乐队没有得到应有的认可。所以作为一名艺术家，拥有包括中国在内的国际乐迷群体，让我感到非常高兴。也许可以通过你安排一次与中国Gore / Death乐队的合辑？我非常期待。谢谢！

Yes, I would like to say that I am very grateful for people like you listening to my band and elevating it. What do I mean? There are so many hard working bands out there that do not get the recognition they deserve. So having an international fanbase, that includes China, makes me very happy as an artist. Maybe a split with a Chinese gore/death metal band can be arranged through you? I would love that. Thank you!
