魔法幻境 - 意大利Death / Black Metal乐队Azrath-11专访

今天采访到的是来自意大利的Death / Black Metal乐队Azrath-11,组建于2007年的Azrath-11乐队,但是早2006年其实乐队就已经开始活动,只是Asmodeus D.D.当做一个副业来进行,Asmodeus D.D.和第一任吉他手Absu T.D.都是瑞典Death Metal和Black Metal的爱好者,所以他们创建了这支乐队并且经过几次的排练之后创作了第一首作品“In Imperial Remembrance”,最终他们决定将这支乐队变成他们主要的乐队来进行创作,演出,乐队成员希望拥有一个与众不同的名字和其他的乐队区分,于是他们在“黑光之书”中找到了Azerate 218这个名字,但是由于版权问题,最终乐队将名字改为Azerate-11,2011年乐队在意大利的Slava Satan Records厂牌发行了他们的第一张正式专辑“The Shrine ov All Hallucination”,真正让这支乐队得到关注的是他们2013年在意大利Punishment 18 Records厂牌发行的第二张专辑“Ov Tentacles and Spirals”,整张专辑节奏迅猛,虽然贯穿始终的节奏与时值变化,但通常表现为吉他从高速颤音弦音切换至快节奏、厚重的吉他段落。说到吉他旋律,Azrath-11的吉他即兴演奏风格听起来像是标准佛罗里达死亡金属与Behemoth或Belphegor那种黑化风格的混合体。整张专辑节奏极快,尤其当配合着连绵不绝的双踩鼓点和叮叮作响的镲片演奏时更是如此。随后乐队发行了三首单曲只有,在今年发行了他们的第三张正式专辑“Kenòs”,这张专辑由意大利的Northern Darkness Records厂牌发行,在新专辑发行之际杂志与乐队的创始人Asmodevs D.D.取得联系进行了一次采访!

Today we’re interviewing the Italian Death/Black Metal band Azrath-11. Formed in 2007, Azrath-11 had actually been active since 2006, though Asmodeus D.D. initially treated it as a side project. Both Asmodeus D.D. and the band’s first guitarist, Absu T.D., were fans of Swedish Death Metal and Black Metal. They formed the band and, after several rehearsals, created their first track, “In Imperial Remembrance.” Eventually, they decided to make this their primary project for writing and performing. The band members wanted a unique name to distinguish themselves from other bands, so they found the name “Azerate 218” in “The Book of Black Light,” but due to copyright issues, the band ultimately changed the name to Azerate-11. In 2011, the band released their first official album, “The Shrine ov All Hallucination,” on the Italian label Slava Satan Records. What truly brought the band into the spotlight, however, was their second album, “Ov Tentacles and Spirals,” released in 2013 on the Italian label Punishment 18 Records. The entire album is driven by a relentless pace; while the rhythm and timing vary throughout, this is typically manifested in the guitar shifting from high-speed tremolo picking to fast-paced, heavy guitar passages. Speaking of guitar melodies, Azerate-11’s improvisational guitar style sounds like a blend of classic Florida death metal and the dark, black-metal-influenced style of bands like Behemoth or Belphegor. The entire album is extremely fast-paced, especially when paired with relentless double-bass drumming and clanging cymbals. The band subsequently released only three singles before dropping their third full-length album, “Kenòs,” this year. The album was released by the Italian label Northern Darkness Records, and to mark the release, the magazine reached out to the band’s founder, Asmodevs D.D., for an interview!

Hello brother, it's nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let's say hello to all Chinese fans. AZRHAT-11 band was founded in 2007 and is a long-standing band. How did you form this band in the first place? What does AZRHAT-11 mean?


A: 你好啊,Volcano ‘Zine!以及所有爱好者们,我一向非常钦佩贵国广阔而迷人的古老历史!这支乐队最初更像一个副业项目,时间可以追溯到2006年末。在早期阶段,我和Absu T.D.(前吉他手)都热爱瑞典Death和Black Metal,我们经常一起即兴演奏,经过几次排练后,第一首歌曲便诞生了(后来被称为“In Imperial Remembrance”)。起初,我们并不想使用一个非常常见的名称,我们需要一个独特的名字,于是“Azerate 218”应运而生,这个名称取自“The Book Of The Black Light”,我们认为这是最合适的名称,但后来我们因该名称涉及版权纠纷,于是我们稍作修改,将其改为“Azrath-11”,这个名称听起来更加优美且更易被识别!


Hell-o Volcano ‘Zine and to all devotees! I’ve always admired the ancient history of your wide and wonderful country! The band started more like a side project,back in the late 2006. In the early days, me and Absu T.D. ( former guitar player) both loved Swedish Death and Black Metal , we were jamming and after couple of rehearsals the very first song was written ( the later known as “ In Imperial Remembrance “) .At first we didn’t want to use a very common moniker, we needed something unique, so Azerate 218 popped up , we took it from The Book Of The Black Light, we thought was the most fittable name until we’ve got into a copyright dispute for the name and we just modified a little bit into Azrath-11, which sound way better and more recognizable!


V: 为什么第一代成员在2008年至2019年间新成员被替换后离开了你的乐队?新成员是如何加入乐队的?你对新成员的工作满意吗?新成员的加入给乐队带来了哪些新的变化?


Why did the first generation members leave your band after two new members were replaced between 2008 and 2019? How did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job? What new changes has the addition of new members brought to the band?


A: 每个乐队的发展历程中都曾有过些许阵容上的变动,这就是生活。Absu T.D. (吉他手) 和 Svarog L.T. (主唱) 都离开了Azrath-11,以便将更多精力投入到其他项目上。Siderevs O.M. (吉他手) 和Antheres A.E. In the history of every band there were slight line up changes, that’s life. Absu T.D. (Guitars) and Svarog L.T. ( Vocals) they both left Azrath-11 to concentrate more into other endeavors. Siderevs O.M. ( Guitars) and Antheres A.E. ( vocals),stepped in, in the late 2010,both were incredible musicians with talent and attitude, with this line up ( including Dioskouroi D.F. the bassist and vocalist since 2008!)we wrote,rehearsed and recorded “ Ov Tentacles And Spirals”released by Punishment 18 in 2013. Due to personal reasons , later on the same year I’ve decided to move and live abroad, putting Azrath-11 on an undefined hiatus, things around us were a bit hostile, so that was a proper time to take a break. In 2018 I came back to my homeland, with a very important task in my heart: bringing the band back. Unfortunately, Siderevs decided to step out to fully dedicate his job, Antheres and Dioskouroi have joined back again and in the fall of the same year ,Enlil A.N. ( lead Guitars) become officially our new soloist! During the Covid-19’s biennial Pandemic protocol, Antheres grabbed the guitar and become the rhythmic guitarist we were looking for a long time. In 2020 our comeback show was planned, but all the venues closed,so we were fed up and sick…and we’ve publicly hibernated for 2 years.We kept doing the rehearsals,only and exclusively when the Italian government was giving freedom to move, that was truly frustrating.To make the long story short, after the end of Worldwide Pandemic Hazard in the Spring of 2022, Azrath-11 came back stronger more than ever, started to work as a team, delivering their first single and first official video clip , entitled “Hamarteia”, where had as a special guest Karl Sanders from Nile, who recorded a phenomenal guitar solo and a spoken voice for the track,released independently on the July 2024! On the late Spring of 2025 we’ve released our second single “Theoktonia” together with a Boombastic video clip,whom led us to perform (after years )as co-headliner along with Sinister,at the prestigious Padua Metal Fest 2025,inking a record deal with Northern Darkness Records few months later! After uncountable struggles, “ Kenòs “ our newborn child got released on May 15th 2026 !!!

Asmodevs D.D. is responsible for playing most of the instruments in the band, and I think he should also be responsible for most of the creative sources in your band. Can you introduce the creative process of your band?

Well, since I’m the original forming member,most the audial imprint orbiting in the Azrath-11 ‘s Cosmo is addressable to my persona. Being a multi-instrumentalist allows me to obtain a certain stability and freedom about the compositive side of the band, on one hand is a positive thing, in the other a huge responsibility! Luckily Antheres started to co-work with me on this manner, letting myself taking a long breath in therms of supplying riffs and songs, and that’s a blessing tho! The lyrical concept is up to me, in order to keep a certain coherence,when most of the music is done, Dioskouroi and Enlil they apply their inputs to finalize the result.


V: 你们的乐队今年刚刚发布了他们的第三张正式专辑,这张专辑的录音效果非常出色。你们是在哪家录音室录制这张专辑的?是谁为你们制作了这张专辑?新专辑的录制过程是否进展顺利?


Your band just released their third official album this year, and the recording effect of this album is excellent. Which studio did you record the album in? Which producer made the album for you? Is the recording process of the new album progressing smoothly?


A: 非常感谢你的美言!对我们来说,生产环节的确至关重要,每一个细微之处都是经过漫长而艰苦的试验、演示和抉择过程所孕育的成果,这不仅在体力上而且在心理上都颇具挑战性。

在“Kenòs”项目中,我们为鼓声录制使用了3家不同的工作室;对于吉他、贝斯、人声和管弦乐也同样如此。我们已与备受赞誉的制作人Stefano Morabito在罗马的16号酒窖工作室展开合作,负责几首歌曲(包括“Hamarteia”和“Theoktonia”)的混音和母带处理工作;其他歌曲则由双方共同制作。“Kenòs”的录制过程并非一帆风顺,途中遇到了一些严重的困难,但凭借我们丰富的经验,这些难题得以被妥善应对并以最佳方式得以解决!


Thank you so much for your kind words! The production point for us truly matters, every single little detail is the product of long an exhausting process of trials, demos and choices, kinda physically and psychologically demanding. On “Kenòs“ we used 3 different studios for drum recordings, the same for guitar,bass,vocals and orchestra. We’ve collaborated with the multi acclaimed producer Stefano Morabito at 16th Cellar Studio in Rome for the mix and master of couple of tracks ( “Hamarteia” and “Theoktonia”) the other songs were co-produced. The recording process for “Kenòs” wasn’t easy, some serious trouble went along the way but with our wise experience,whom helped us to menage certain situations in the best way possible!

You should have changed to a new logo. Who designed this heart logo for you? Your album artworks are designed very beautifully. Who designed these album artworks for you?


A: Azrath-11的视觉层面至关重要,我们非常乐于将我们的幻想转化为无声的噩梦图像!对于每张专辑,我们都挑选了特定的艺术家进行合作,这些艺术家都是富有远见且才华横溢的人,有能力将我们的想法变为现实和可见的。关于标志的设计,这也是我的创作,其中使用了大量Araldic象征元素。如果你是在询问我们是否愿意对标志进行更新,那么我表示赞同,我对于各种选项持开放态度,但必须确保这些选项完全贴切。


the visual side of Azrath-11 is vital, we do love to transform our visions to concrete images of wordless nightmares! For each album ,we’ve chosen selected artists to work with, visionary and talented individuals, capable to make our ideas becoming true And Tangible. About the logo design, it’s my creation as well, used lots of Araldic symbolism. If you’re asking about if we would love to refresh the logo, well, I’m in , kinda open for options,but must be 100% pertinent.

Magic, Esotericism, Occultism, Fantasy, H.P. Lovecraft are your music themes. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?


A: 有时,艺术家并不会有意识地选择主题,这些主题反而选择了艺术家,要求将它们用语言和音符表达出来,让它们透过艺术的棱镜显现出来,并成为那些令人恐惧却又模糊的幻象的代言人。显然,我一生都对未知世界的奥秘怀有极大的兴趣,我将青春时光花在阅读书籍、观看某些电影上,将空虚恐惧这一虚构元素与音乐中的听觉宏伟感和黑暗史诗风格融为一体。我如何能解释那些无法解释的事物呢?奇迹就发生在光与暗的薄纱之间,当你完全投入其中,当你在精神上与创作艺术(以最纯粹的形式)的目标达成一致时,奇迹便发生了!


Sometimes an artist does not consciously choose themes , those themes chose the artist to be translated in words and notes,to shine through the artistic prism and be the voice of those frightening,yet obscure, visions. Obviously ,for all my life I’ve been tremendously fascinated by the mysteries of the unknown,spent my youth reading books, watching certain movies,blend the fictional side of the horror vacui with the audial magniloquence and dark epicism of music. How can I explain the unexplainable? The magic happens, between the thin veils of light and darkness,when you’re completely committed, when you’re spiritually aligned to deliver art, in it’s purest form!


V: 你是如何与Northern Darkness Records、Punishment 18 Records和Slava Satan Records取得联系并合作制作你的三张专辑的呢?我熟悉“Punishment 18 Records”这个唱片公司,但我对另外两家公司不太了解。你能介绍一下这两家唱片公司吗?


How did you get in touch with Northern Darkness Records, Punishment 18 Records, and Slava Satan Records to collaborate on your three albums? I am familiar with the Punishment 18 Records label, but I am not very familiar with the other two products. Can you introduce these two labels?


A: 与Slava Satan的合作是我们最初的一笔交易。这是一家由两位充满激情的人士领导的独立小型唱片公司。Punishment 18非常喜爱我们的首张专辑,因此与我们签约了“Ov Tentacles And Spirals”。而Northern Darkness Records则成立于1992年,曾是意大利最早的极端金属唱片公司。出于多种原因,该公司在21世纪初便已停业,但于两年前重新恢复运营。他们观看了我们的现场演出,之后便非常迫切地希望与我们签约,这便是如今“Kenòs”诞生的原因!


With Slava Satan was our first deal, an independent small record label led by two very passionate individuals, Punishment 18 loved our debut album and so signed us for “Ov Tentacles And Spirals “, Northern Darkness Records instead ,used to be the very first Italian Extreme Metal record label back in 1992, for multiple reasons they’ve closed in the early 2000s and came back to business 2 years ago.They saw us perform live and after that they wanted us so bad to sign for them, that’s why now there’s “Kenòs”!


V: 你发布作品的速度非常缓慢。你是在2007年成立的,但直到2011年才发布了第一张专辑,2013年发布了第二张专辑,2019年发布了一首单曲,而第三张专辑则要到2026年才发布?你为何会采取如此缓慢的发布节奏?


You released your works very slowly. You were formed in 2007 and only released your first album in 2011, your second album in 2013, a single in 2019, and your third album in 2026? What is the reason for your slow release speed?


A: 我们像酿造优质葡萄酒一样进行创作,我们不太在意周围的事物,但我们致力于呈现真诚的音乐!你知道的,我们经历了太多的挣扎,时而加入乐队,时而退出乐队:运气不好(“疫情”这种东西并不是我们所期望的),做出了错误的选择,在我们周围还存在着一些不专业的人!所有这些因素结合在一起,使我们陷入了一种危险但又极具毒性的境地,但我们还是挺了过来。如今我们依然在这里:仍然要统治并征服!


We brew like fine wine, we don’t much care about things around us but deliver honest music! You know, we went through too many struggles, in and out the band: bad luck ( a Pandemia was not a thing we were looking for), bad choices, unprofessional people around us! All those elements combined together led us to a deadly ,yet toxic, formula we’ve survived and here we’re: still to reign and conquer!

V: 首先,祝贺你们的乐队今年推出了最新专辑(这是你们的第三张专辑)。你们的作品中充满了Old School元素,你可以感受到你们是一群非常“强硬”的音乐人。你们的音乐中有很多复古的吉他Riff,原始、粗犷,而鼓手的表演尤为引人注目。精确且快速的鼓点使你们的作品节奏非常快。你们对自己作品的看法是什么?新专辑与旧专辑之间有哪些变化?


First of all, congratulations to your band for releasing their latest album this year, which is your third album. Your works are filled with elements of Old School, and you can feel that you are very hardcore musicians. You have a lot of retro Riff, primitive, rough, and the drummer's performance is very eye-catching. The precise and fast drum beats make your works very fast. What is your opinion on your own works? What are the changes between the new album and the old album?


A: 嗯,要对自己创作的作品做出评判是非常困难的。从技术和生产角度而言,我们在自我意识方面取得了很大的进步,实际的成熟度令我们十分满意(100%)。过去的素材仍然不够成熟,我们尚未达到相同的阅历水平,无法理解我们的音乐真正需要什么。我本更愿意花更多时间来精心处理混音、声音和后期制作,但在追求卓越的过程中所犯的错误,都足以证明如今取得的优异成果是合理的!关于即兴演奏和鼓乐风格方面,我们已年岁渐长,自然而然会呈现出这样的风格。老实说,我们并不刻意去刻意追求某种特定的音色,因为对我们来说,这并非一种潮流所趋,我们就是本来的样子!我们在这一点上永远不会改变,我们不喜欢这类现代作品,它们缺乏个性和真实性!在我看来,过多的科技元素会扼杀Death Metal音乐中原始而狂野的气质!


Uh, that’s very difficult to judge your own stuff. In a technical/ production wise manner, we grew up a lot in therms of self conscience, the actual maturity satisfies us 100%. The past material was still not mature enough,we weren’t at the same experience height to understand what our music truly needed. I would have preferred to spend more time to work on mixes,sound and mastering more carefully , but the mistakes you do on the path towards excellence,they all justify the great results over the nowadays situation ! About the riffing and the drum style, we are old enough to sound that way, honestly we do not push ourselves to sound in a way , cause for us ain’t a trend, we are what we are! We’ll never change on that point, we dislike those kind of modern productions, they lack of identity,and genuinity !Imvho, too much technology kills the primal and ferocious spirit of Death Metal music!


V: 作为一支历史悠久的意大利乐队,你们曾参加过许多音乐节。哪些音乐节给你们留下了深刻印象?你能介绍一下当时现场的氛围吗?你们的乐队计划在2026年参加哪些其他音乐节?


As an old Italian band, you have participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? What other music festivals are your band planning to participate in in 2026?


A: 在整个职业生涯中,Azrath-11始终保持着极高的选择性。从第一天起,我们就拒绝在小型酒吧里演出,因为我们想避开那些庸俗的场合,以维护我们的声誉和身份。这并非关乎是否被宠坏或缺乏谦逊,而是自我保护的问题!因此,Azrath-11始终在专业场所演出,处于专业的环境之中!我们这样做是为了我们的音乐和演出,为了粉丝!我们的选择(即使是最难做出的决定)使我们有机会与业界一些最可靠、最受尊敬的乐队(如Malevolent Creation、Belphegor、Impiety、Vomitory、Prostitute Disfigurement、Impaled Nazarene、Narcotic Wasteland等)同台演出,因为我们非常在乎并且觉得我们的粉丝值得观看高水平的音乐会!


Azrath-11 have been incredibly selective throughout their career. Since the day 1, we’ve refused to play in small bars, in those amateurish situations we wanted to avoid ,in order to preserve our prestige and identity. It’s not a matter of being spoiled or lack of humility, but self preservation! So Azrath-11 always played in professional venues, under professional conditions! We did it for our music and performances, for the fans! Our choices, even the most difficult to make, led us to share the stage with some of the most reliable and respectful bands on the business like Malevolent Creation, Belphegor, Impiety, Vomitory, Prostitute Disfigurement, Impaled Nazarene, Narcotic Wasteland and many others, because we care a lot and we feel like our fans deserve high level concerts to witness!

As an old band, all three of your albums are excellent. I will always pay attention to and support your band.
