Hailing from South America, WARTHRASH has spent over two decades reshaping its sound. Stripping away the pure thrash metal framework, the band has absorbed the sonic character of old-school death metal, balancing ferocious grooves with oppressive atmosphere. Their new fulllength No Light Shall Remain stands as their most fully realised artistic statement to date. Rejecting excessive polish, the record returns to the primal impact of extreme metal. Following the release of this refreshing offering, Volcano Magazine reached out to WARTHRASH for an exclusive interview.

WARTHRASH was formed in Medellín back in 2005, and more than two decades have passed ever since. After such a long journey, what do you believe is the key to keeping the band’s vitality and aggression intact?

Greetings to all the readers of Vulcano Magazine! Thanks for having us and giving us this space. For us, it's very important to stay true to our musical roots. Here in this part of the world, we grew up listening to a lot of classic '80s and '90s metal, and it's still what we listen to every day. That's probably why our music continues to carry that spirit and those influences. We're always open to experimenting with new ideas, but staying faithful to our roots naturally brings us back to the raw, honest sound of classic metal.

V: 你们的新专辑《No Light Shall Remain》即将在6月19日通过Awakening Records发行。从早期的纯粹敲击金属，到如今更黑暗、更沉重、更接近经典死亡金属的声音，这种演变是水到渠成的，还是某个瞬间你们决定“是时候改变了”？

Your new album No Light Shall Remain is set to be released on June 19 via Awakening Records. Your sound has evolved from pure thrash metal in the early days into something darker, heavier and closer to classic death metal nowadays. Was this evolution a natural progression, or did you reach a specific moment where you decided “it’s time for a shift”?

W: 转变发生得非常自然。我们都是经典鞭击金属和死亡金属的忠实粉丝。死亡金属一直或多或少地融入了我们的音乐风格，但这张专辑真正巩固了这一方向，尤其是在Merciless加入乐队担任吉他手之后，以及我们共同创作的歌曲中。一切都是自然而然发生的，并非刻意为之，而是自然而然地形成了最能代表我们如今风格的音乐。话虽如此，乐队一直以来受到的鞭击金属影响依然存在，无论是在早期的作品还是新歌中。

The transition happened very naturally. All of us are huge fans of classic thrash and death metal. Death metal has always been part of our sound to some extent, but this album really solidified that direction, especially after Merciless joined the band on guitar and through the songs we wrote together. Nothing was planned or forced, it simply became the sound that best represents who we are today. That said, the thrash influences that have always been part of the band are still there, both in the older material and the new songs.

V: 新专辑在Area 51 Studios录制，据说你们刻意保留了原始的动态，没有过度使用数字修音。能具体说说录音过程中你们是怎么做的吗？在如今这个过度制作泛滥的时代，坚持这种“raw edge”对你们来说意味着什么？

The new record was tracked at Area 51 Studios. It’s said you intentionally preserved raw dynamics and avoided excessive digital editing. Could you elaborate on your workflow during the recording process? In an era saturated with over-production, what does sticking to this raw edge mean to your band?

W: 对我们来说，录音作品能够真实反映我们是谁至关重要。我们不是职业乐手，我们只是四个热爱金属乐的乐迷，做着我们热爱的事情：演奏金属乐。我们并不追求技术上的完美或炫技，尤其是在如今音乐千篇一律、毫无生气的时代。我们希望这张专辑听起来充满活力、真诚坦率，并且真正展现乐队的风格。这就是我们。至于录音过程，我们带着完整的歌曲创作进入录音棚。我们先录制了鼓，然后是吉他、人声和贝斯。吉他和贝斯部分，我们结合使用了真实的音箱和音箱模拟器以及效果器，而鼓则使用传统的原声鼓组录制。在录音过程中，随着新想法的涌现，我们对一些编曲进行了调整，并将这些改动也记录了下来。

For us, it's important that the recording reflects who we really are. We're not professional musicians, we're just four metalheads doing what we love: playing metal. We're not chasing technical perfection or flashy virtuosity, especially in an era where so much music feels like it comes out of the same lifeless mold. We wanted the album to sound alive, honest, and true to the band. This is who we are. As for the recording process, we came into the studio with all the songs fully written. We recorded the drums first, followed by guitars, vocals, and bass. We combined real amplifiers with amp and effects simulators for the guitars and bass, while the drums were recorded using a traditional acoustic kit. During the recording sessions, we made a few adjustments to some of the arrangements as new ideas came up, recording those changes as part of the process.

V: 你们从Thrash Zone转投Awakening Records。这次签约对你们来说意味着什么？你们是如何看待你们音乐风格的转变的？什么促使你们做出这些变化？

You switched labels from Thrash Zone to Awakening Records. What does this new signing mean for WARTHRASH? How do you view your musical shift, and what drove you to make these artistic changes?

W: 与Awakening Records签约是一次非常棒的经历。我们一直在寻找拓展新听众群体的方法，而Awakening在这方面做得非常出色，尤其是在推广本地区乐队方面。我们关注他们的工作已经好几年了，所以当需要发行实体专辑时，他们是我们最先联系的唱片公司之一。我们希望与他们建立长期稳定的合作关系，并在未来的发行工作中继续携手共进。

Signing with Awakening Records has been a great experience. We're always looking for ways to reach new audiences, and Awakening has been doing an outstanding job, especially with bands from this region. We had been following their work for a couple of years, so they were one of the first labels we contacted when it came time to release the album on physical format. We hope to build a strong, long-term relationship with them and continue working together on our future releases.

V: 乐队有四名成员共同参与创作。Caronte身兼主唱和鼓手，这种少见的双重身份组合在创作和录音室中给你们带来了怎样的独特动态？

All four band members take part in the songwriting process. Caronte handles both vocals and drums—a fairly rare dual role. What unique dynamics does this bring to your songwriting and studio work? What kind of challenges does this pose for Caronte personally?

It's definitely a challenge, especially in this kind of music where the drums play such a demanding and essential role. Our songwriting process usually starts with the music, and the lyrics come later. Since Caronte performs most of the vocals, when it's time to write the lyrics, which is something we all contribute to, we often make adjustments, either to the lyrics or to the music, so the vocal lines fit naturally while allowing Caronte to perform both parts without sacrificing precision or intensity behind the drum kit. Playing these songs live requires a huge amount of effort, but years of experience have helped refine that ability.

V: 作为一支来自哥伦比亚麦德林的金属乐队，你们如何定义自身在拉美极端金属界的地位？未来会有什么样的发展趋向？

our album artwork and band logo are highly distinctive. Who designed them, and what symbolism lies behind the cover art? Which bands have exerted the biggest influences on your musical style?

W: 哥伦比亚拥有令人惊叹的极端金属乐坛，足以与世界其他地区最优秀的乐队并驾齐驱。我们为自己所创造的音乐风格感到自豪，也为能够传承经典金属精神而感到骄傲。展望未来，我们计划发行更多专辑，并缩短专辑之间的间隔，同时还将进行几次全国巡演。

Colombia has an incredible extreme metal scene and stands shoulder to shoulder with the best bands in this part of the world. We're proud of the sound we've developed and of doing our part to keep the spirit of classic metal alive. Looking ahead, we're planning to release several more albums with shorter gaps between them, as well as a couple of national tours.

V: 你们的专辑封面和乐队logo十分具有特色，是谁设计了它们？封面作品有什么含义？你们音乐风格受哪些乐队的影响最多？

Your album covers and band logo are very distinctive. Who designed them? What is the meaning behind the cover art? Which bands have had the greatest influence on your musical style?

W: 整个创作过程都在乐队内部完成。我们四个人会共同讨论并完善每张专辑的音乐和视觉概念。Caronte和Silent通常主导这个过程，因为他们与平面设计和视听制作有着密切的联系。一旦确定了整体概念，我们就会与当地艺术家 Julián Mora 合作，将专辑封面变为现实。事实上，Julián曾为Awakening Records的多张专辑创作过封面，我们强烈推荐大家去欣赏他的作品。至于我们的音乐影响，名单非常庞大，仅举几例：Merciless、Infernal Majesty、Possessed、Unleashed、Bolt Thrower、Dismember 等等。

The entire creative process happens within the band. All four of us discuss and develop the musical and visual concepts behind every release. Caronte and Silent usually lead this process because they're closely involved with graphic design and audiovisual production. Once we've defined the overall concept, we work with local artist Julián Mora to bring the album cover to life. In fact, Julián has created artwork for several Awakening Records releases, and we'd definitely recommend checking out his work. As for our musical influences, the list is huge, but to name just a few: Merciless, Infernal Majesty, Possessed, Unleashed, Bolt Thrower, Dismember, and many more.
