今天采访到的是乌克兰的Melodic Black Metal乐队Dark Stronghold，组建于2021年的Dark Stronghold乐队由Lord of Discordia和Desert Demon两个人共同组建，2023年乐队发行了他们的第一张正式专辑“The Feast of Black Crows”冰冷，凄凉的氛围，优美，忧伤的旋律构成了这张阴暗的作品，可以看出来Desert Demon对于旋律和氛围方面非常用功，2024年乐队发行了他们的最新EP专辑“Citadel”依旧是一张精彩绝伦的作品，这张EP专辑制作的也更加精良，Lord of Discordia的演唱也更加的稳重，无情，残酷，2025年乐队发行了他们的第二张正式专辑“Thunderclap”，这张新专辑乐队做出了一些改变，就是在他们的新作品当中加入了一些Doom的元素，这样更加的体现出作品中氛围的部分，在新专辑发行之际，乐队的歌手Lord of Discordia与杂志取得联系进行了一次采访！

The Ukrainian band Dark Stronghhold was interviewed today. The Dark Stronghhold band, formed in 2021 by Lord of Discordia and Desert Demon, released their first official album "The Feast of Black Crows" in 2023. The cold, desolate atmosphere, beautiful, and melancholic melody make up this dark work. It can be seen that Desert Demon works very hard on melody and atmosphere. In 2024, the band released their latest EP album "Citadel", which is still a wonderful and unparalleled work. The production of this EP album is also more exquisite, Lord of Discordia's singing is also more steady, ruthless, and cruel. In 2025, the band released their second official album "Thunderclap". The band made some changes in this new album by adding some Doom elements to their new work, which further reflects the atmosphere in the work. At the time of the release of the new album, the band's singer Lord of Discordia contacted the magazine for an interview!

Hello Dark Stronghold, thank you for accepting this interview. Before the interview, could you tell us a little about the band? When was it formed? How did the two members meet?

L: 你好！感谢你的邀请！得知中国也有听众在聆听我们的音乐，真是太棒了！我们的乐队只有两个人组成。我们于2021年秋天创立了乐队并几乎立即就选定了名字Dark Stronghold，因为我们坚定地决定，我们的所有歌曲都将与斯蒂芬·金的"The Dark Tower"宇宙相关联。我认识“Desert Demon”已经很长时间了——几乎有近25年了。是的，我们的友谊一直很牢固，但共同创作一个项目的愿望只是五年前才产生的。我们早期的曲目主要受到奥地利乐队Summoning的影响，但后来我们在音乐上做了很多改变。然而新专辑将会让粉丝们感到惊喜。

Hello! Thank you for the invitation! It's so nice to know that people in China are listening to us, too. So, our band consists of just two people. We founded it in the fall of 2021, and we chose a name almost immediately, Dark Stronghold, because we firmly decided that all our songs would be connected to the universe of Stephen King's The Dark Tower. I have known Desert Demon for a very long time – almost a quarter of a century. Yes, our friendship has been going strong, but the desire to create a joint project only arose five years ago. Our early tracks were largely inspired by the work of the Austrian band Summoning, but we later changed a lot in our music. However, the new album will surprise our fans.

V: 你们于2025年12月发布了你们的新专辑"Thunderclap"。你能否向我们介绍一下这张新专辑？你认为这张专辑与你2023年的专辑有何不同？

You released your new album “Thunderclap” in December 2025. Could you tell us a bit about this new album? How does it differ from your 2023 album in your opinion?

L: 当我们录制"Citadel"时，我们觉得仅仅以Melodic Black Metal的形式演奏是不够的；我们开始朝着氛围感强烈的Black Doom方向发展。在某种意义上，这是一次对其他音乐流派的探索。新专辑在很大程度上延续了这一趋势，但它的风格更加多样且跨流派。这使得它与我们之前的作品有很大不同。专辑中既有激烈、快速的音乐，也有相当旋律化的曲目，其中包含朗诵和女声演唱。在我看来这种音乐完美地捕捉了歌曲的氛围。

When we recorded “Citadel”, we felt that it was not enough to play only in the melodic black metal format; we started moving in the direction of atmospheric black doom. In a sense, it was an attempt to explore other genres. The new album largely continues this trend, but it's more diverse and multi-genre. This makes it very different from our previous work. The album features both hard, fast music and rather melodic tracks with declamations and female vocals. In my opinion, this kind of music perfectly captures the atmosphere of the songs.

V: 你通常是如何创作音乐的？你能向我们介绍一下你的创作过程吗？

How do you usually create music? Could you introduce your creative process to us?

L: 所有音乐均由Desert Demon创作。他是主要作曲者和表演者（包括鼓手部分）。这是一个非常复杂且费力的过程。当歌曲的初步工作版本问世时，我将挑选那些看起来最合适和恰当的演唱部分。某些歌词可能早已写成，但我会将它们调整以适应新的素材。当然，我们会讨论在此创作过程中出现的所有细节问题。换句话说，音乐是主要的“骨架”，随着时间的推移，它逐渐变得有血有肉，充满美感。

All the music is composed by Desert Demon. He is the main composer and performer (including the drums). It's a very complex and painstaking process. When the first working versions of the songs emerge, I select the vocal parts that seem most suitable and appropriate. Some lyrics may have been written much earlier, but I adapt them to the new material. Naturally, we discuss all the nuances that arise during this creative process. In other words, the music is the main “skeleton” that, over time, takes on flesh and beauty.

V: 你能否谈谈音乐中的主题？你的歌曲是关于什么的？你希望通过这些主题表达什么？

Could you talk about the themes of your music? What are your songs about? What do you want to express through these themes?

L: "Dark Stronghold"首先是一种Black Metal风格，因此我们的所有作品都聚焦于“The Dark Tower”宇宙中黑暗甚至阴郁的一面。角色的悲剧命运、阴沉的地点和城市、人类和恶魔所有这些都可以在我们的歌曲中找到。在我看来，音乐完美地传达了这个宇宙中主要角色所经历的戏剧性和压抑感。我们想通过这些主题表达什么？并非所有被视为邪恶的东西实际上就是邪恶的。斯蒂芬·金本人可能会不同意这一点，因为在他的作品中，“正义”角色几乎总是会获胜。但如果你深入观察，那些“光明”一方的人身上也可能存在虚伪、谎言和残忍，而另一方则被毫无区别地妖魔化。所谓的“邪恶”也是一种生命，它在为自己的生存而斗争，只是方式不同而已。我们歌唱的是黑暗的一面。邪恶是我们的灵感源泉。

Dark Stronghold is first and foremost black metal, so all our work focuses on the dark, even grim side of the Dark Tower universe. Tragic fates of characters, gloomy places and cities, people and demons — all of this can be found in our songs. In my opinion, the music perfectly conveys the dramatic and oppressive experiences of the main characters in this universe. What do we want to express through these themes? Not all evil that is considered evil is actually evil. Stephen King himself would probably disagree with this, since in his works, the “right” characters almost always win. But if you look deeper, hypocrisy, lies, and cruelty can sometimes be found among those on the “light” side, while those on the other side are demonized indiscriminately. So-called evil is also life, fighting for its existence, but in different ways. We sing about the dark side. The devilry is the source of our inspiration.

V: 能否跟我们谈谈这张新专辑的封面设计？你是如何创作出这张封面的？为何会选择它作为封面呢？

Could you talk to us about the cover of this new album? How did you create this cover? Why did you choose it as the cover?

L: 封面的选择是由专辑名称决定的。"Thunderclap"是"The Dark Tower"宇宙中最黑暗的地方之一，许多该系列的粉丝对此并不陌生。在"Thunderclap"中，老旧的废弃房屋、石块和废墟都被笼罩在阴郁的氛围之中。金曾形容此处为“坟墓将死者吐露出来”的地方。封面上展示的是古老的巴伐利亚要塞——科堡山（位于德国南部）。这是我拍摄的照片。虽然这并非对"Thunderclap"的常规描绘，但当我第一眼看到它时，几乎立刻就爱上了它。它令我着迷。在这座古老要塞的附近，时间的流逝方式似乎与众不同，仿佛它有自己的节奏，而这正是"Thunderclap"的精髓所在。我认为科堡山在昏暗光影下的呈现，与我们的专辑完美相衬。

The choice of cover is determined by the album's title. Thunderclap is one of the darkest places in the Dark Tower universe, familiar to many fans of the franchise. In Thunderclap, old burnt-out houses, stones, and ruins are immersed in gloom. King described this place as one where graves vomit out their dead. The cover features the old Bavarian fortress of Veste Coburg (in southern Germany), which I photographed. It's not quite the canonical depiction of Thunderclap, but I fell in love with it almost immediately when I saw it. It enchanted me. Time flows differently near this ancient fortress, as if at its own pace, and this is precisely the essence of Thunderclap. I think Veste Coburg, photographed in the gloom, complements our album perfectly.

V: 你是否有任何关于2026年的新计划？

Do you have any new plans for 2026?

L: 是的，我们确实在准备一张新专辑。虽然进展缓慢，但一切都在有条不紊地进行中。这张专辑将与我们以往的所有作品大相径庭。换言之，我们计划暂时脱离"The Dark Tower"系列的固有框架，为新素材注入原创的神话元素。这算得上是一次颇具创意的实验，但我们确实很享受从事这类工作的过程。新专辑很可能呈现出早期Summoning风格的Atmospheric Epic Black Metal曲风。如果一切顺利的话，新专辑最早可能于今秋（甚至夏末）发布。

Yes, we do. We're slowly but surely preparing a new album, which will be very different from all our previous material. In other words, we plan to temporarily depart from the Dark Tower canon, infusing the new material with original mythology. It's a bit of a creative experiment, but we really enjoy working on such things. The new album will likely sound like atmospheric epic black metal in the style of early Summoning. If all goes well, the new album could be released as early as this fall (or even late summer).

V: 你有没有特别喜欢的乐队或者你认为对你产生了重大影响的乐队？能否与我们分享一些你的想法？

Do you have any particular favorite bands or bands that you think have had a significant influence on you? Could you share some thoughts with us?

Thank you for your question. It’s especially nice to talk about my favorite bands. First of all, I'd like to highlight the early work of My Dying Bride, which has long been the benchmark for quality death-doom metal for me. Desert Demon also shares this point of view. Some of this has slightly affected our music. Early Anathema, early Katatonia and Winter — the list goes on. All of these bands evoke awe in my soul. Desert Demon is also a fan of early Katatonia and similar bands from the early 90s. About 25 years ago, I was an ardent death metal fan – Nile, Gorguts, Suffocation, Disgorge (USA), Deeds of Flesh, Immolation. However, in recent years, these bands have faded into the background, and I again prefer the old-school death metal of the late 80s and early 90s. Early Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Obituary and, of course, Death. All these bands shaped me and continue to have a huge influence. As for black metal, my tastes haven't changed much over the years. Bands like Emperor, Abigor, Dark Funeral and Summoning still inspire me.
