Today's interview is with Sanctuary Golgota, a Metalcore/Death Metal band from Timor-Leste, this is my first interview with a band from the country of Timor-Leste and the first time I've heard of a band from the country, where apart from Sanctuary Golgota there is also a band called Klak. Deatcore/Metalcore, let's move on to Sanctuary Golgota, the band was formed as a school band in 2004, but according to the band members the band was actually formed in 2009, initially the band was named Sanctuary, and in the early days the band's style was defined as Nu-Metal, and soon after the band changed its style to Metalcore. The first vocalist Paul Guterres became the band's current manager and was replaced by Maudeni, with Abetu on guitar, Frengky on bass and Leo on drums as the first members, and shortly after their formation the band released their first official album “Echoes of Discord”, the quality of the production has quickly made this band a hot band in Timor-Leste, if you want to know more about Timor-Leste bands and the metal scene in this country, then Sanctuary Golgota is the best band for you to check out. A short while ago, through a friend's recommendation, the magazine contacted Sanctuary Golgota for an interview!

Hello brother nice to meet you and thank you very much for taking part in this interview, I think this is the first time you guys have been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, first of all say hello to all the Chinese fans, Sanctuary Golgota was formed in 2009 and how did you guys form the band in the first place?
S: 首先Sanctuary Golgota（原名 Sanctuary）成立于2009年。乐队成员最初是高中时的同班同学，慢慢地对金属产生了兴趣并于2009年正式宣布成立金属乐队。早期Sanctuary更倾向于Nu - Metal，后来慢慢将其特色固定在Metalcore和Death Metal上。
First thing first Sanctuary Golgota (formerly known as Sanctuary) was formed in 2009. The members of the band initially started as bandmates in high school and slowly developed the taste for metal and officially declared as a metal band in 2009. In early days, Sanctuary leaned more towards nu metal and slowly fixed its character in metalcore and deathmetal.
V: 你们乐队的四位成员都是第一代成员，我想这让你们在创作歌曲时更加容易，因为你们彼此非常熟悉，知道对方需要创作什么样的歌曲，能描述一下你们的创作过程吗？
All four members of your band are first generation members, I think that makes it easier when it comes to songwriting because you know each other so well and know what kind of songs each other need to create, can you describe your songwriting process?

The band’s first vocalist, Paul Guterres is currently the band’s manager and his position as frontman is now fulfilled by Maudeni. First generation members remain is Abetu on guitar, Frengky on bass, and Leo on drums. In songwriting, almost everyone can write lyrics and fine tune by everyone in the band. Raw arrangement often comes from Abetu who often propose the riffs. After that, Leo starts writing the drums and make sure all details are synced. After the combination, the instrumental appearance seems to emerge. Maudeni then comes in, to feed the vocals, while Frengky and Abetu work on their synchronization. Leo and Frengky also have to rehearse to blend the low-end. Before recording, the band has to rehearse the finished song for several times and revise the parts during practice and fix the tempos. After everyone is satisfied with their portion and the song flows flawlessly, then it is set for studio recording.
V: 你们2024年录制的新专辑效果非常出色，你们是在哪个录音室录制的？哪位制作人为你们制作了这张专辑？新专辑的录制过程如何？
Your new 2024 album was recorded very well, so what studio did you record the album in? Which producer worked on the album for you? How is the recording process going for the new album?
S: Sanctuary Golgota自己录制了这些曲目。圣域戈尔戈塔自己建造了一个音乐工作室，作为他们在帝力图阿那拉兰的总部。该工作室原本只用于排练，但由于设备符合录音的最低要求，乐队便在自己的总部录制了“Echoes of Discord”。然后专辑被送往Jogja的Swaradipa音乐工作室进行最后的混音和母带处理。由9首曲目组成的全长专辑“Echoes of Discord”于2024年9月28日发行，成为该国历史上第一支大规模发行专辑的金属乐队。2025年Sanctuary Golgota 集中精力进行专辑巡演并为即将发行的帝汶岛合辑“Timor Bersatu”创作一些新曲目。
Sanctuary Golgota recorded the tracks on their own. Sanctuary Golgota had builded a music studio themselves and serves as their headquarter in Tuana Laran, Dili. Originally it was intended for rehearsal only, but since the equipment fulfills minimum requirements for recording, the band pursue the recording of Echoes of Discord at their own HQ. The album was then sent to Swaradipa Music Studio in Jogja for final mixing and mastering. Full length Echoes of Discord consists of 9 tracks was released on 28 September 2024, marking history of the country as first metal band to mass release an album. In 2025, Sanctuary Golgota focuses on touring of the album and working on some new tracks for the upcoming Timor Island compilation “Timor Bersatu” uniting bands from Timor-Leste and Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia.

Your band was originally named Sanctuary, but in 2024 you changed your name to Sanctuary Golgota what made you change your name? Did you release any material during the Sanctuary period?
S: 改名的主要原因是美国有一支同名乐队在2010年重新组建。此外在乐队名称后添加后缀也是为了赋予乐队独特的个性和身份。戈尔戈塔是乐队的诞生地，它不仅是一个名字，更是一个孕育和见证乐队发展的社区。将乐队命名为Sanctuary Golgota代表了乐队最真实的身份。乐队成员大多居住在戈尔戈塔，而Sanctuary的字面意思是避难所，象征着戈尔戈塔是圣洁、舒适和罪人的避难所。Sanctuary时期发行了一系列单曲。首张单曲"Mundo"是一首Nu - Metal乐曲，标志着乐队的成立。随后发行的“Fee”是乐队的第一首Metalcore乐曲。"Sacrifício Metan"和"Heroi ba Rai"（原名"Liberdade"）也是在Golgota时期发行的并在最近发行的"Echoes of Discord"中进行了重新编曲和微调。
The main reason for name change was due the fact that there is another band with the same name based in US that has been reactivated in 2010. Besides, the thought around giving a unique character and identity was among the decision to add the suffix to the band’s name. Golgota is the birthplace of the band and not only just a name but a community that nurtures and witnesses the band’s evolution. Having the band named Sanctuary Golgota represents the truest identity of the band. The members are mostly resided in Golgota, and Sanctuary, which literally means a refuge signifies Golgota as place of holy, comfort, and refuge for sinners. There were series of singles released in Sanctuary era. Started off with ‘Mundo’ a nu metal track that marked the beginning of the band. Followed by ‘Fee’ band’s first metalcore track. ‘Sacrifício Metan’ and ‘Heroi ba Rai’ (formerly known as Liberdade) were also released in Sanctuary era and rearranged and fine tuned for Echoes of Discord released recently.
V: 你们的Logo设计得很漂亮，是谁为你们设计的这个Logo？你们的专辑封面设计也很精美，是谁为你们设计的？
Your logo design is beautiful, who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork is also beautifully designed, who designed this artwork for you?
S: 乐队的Loho是由 Leo（鼓手）设计的，他设计好后与大家分享，供大家修改和认可。Echoes of Discord的插图由M Ali Sodokin设计，他是一位来自印尼爪哇Timur省Srono的艺术插画师。设计基于乐队提供的叙述，代表了专辑曲目中的信息。
The band logo was drawn by Leo (the drummer) who designed it and shared with everyone for revision and approval. The artwork of Echoes of Discord was designed by M Ali Sodokin an art illustrator from Srono, Jawa Timur, Indonesia. The design was based on narrative provided the band representing the messages in the tracks of the album.

What is the theme of your band's music about, why did you choose it and what do you want to express through it? Do you have a lyrics section, who writes these lyrics and what inspires him?

The songs are centered on social injustices, unfairness, neglecting, and regrets. Our understanding of metal is to voice fierce about the topics, mentioned. We think the message we sent can give more meaning to views and opinions of the majority who have been neglected in our corrupted social conduct. The lyrics are written by the band members and some of the band’s colleagues. Most of our lyrics as mentioned inspired by social issues faced by our community.

First of all, congratulations on the release of the band's first official album âEchoes of Discordâ in 2024, it's a wonderful piece of work, Metalcoer mixed with elements of Death Metal, continuous riffs without a pause, and the drummer is very consistent. Precise, steady strikes, the singer's melodic Death Metal-like vocal style, what do you think of your work?
S: 我们发行这张唱片时非常激动，因为这不仅是我们的历史时刻，也是东帝汶金属界的历史时刻。我们与东帝汶其他最优秀的金属乐队一起，标志着东帝汶金属乐进入了一个杰出的新时代并希望能激励更多的人才，促进该流派在更大范围内得到认可。不仅如此这次发行活动不仅加强了乐队之间的地下网络，还彻底改变了金属场景，打破了国内金属行为的现状。我们经常认为，“Echoes of Discord”不仅仅是圣域戈尔戈塔乐队的作品，也是东帝汶所有金属乐队和音乐家的作品。
S: We were very excited when releasing it because it was a historical moment not only for us but also for Timor-Leste metal scene. Together with other finest metal bands in the country we marked an outstanding new era of metal in the country and hoped to inspire more talents and promoted the genre to reach a wider sphere of acceptance. Not only that, the launching event underlined a strengthened underground network among the band but it also revolutionized the metal scene and break the status quo of metal conduct in the country. We often think Echoes of Discord is beyond just Sanctuary Golgota but also about all metal heads and musicians in Timor.
V: 你们乐队在2025年还有其他什么新计划吗？比如写歌、录制新歌，你能透露一些吗？
What are some of the other new things you have going on in your band in 2025? Like writing, recording some new songs, can you shed some light on that?
S: Sanctuary Golgota希望在可能的情况下组织一次地区巡演。乐队目前还在为即将发行的 “Timor Bersatu”合辑创作单曲，该合辑将与来自东帝汶金属泰坦和印度尼西亚西帝汶的其他乐队一起发行。
Sanctuary Golgota hopes to organize a regional tour if possible. The band is also currently working on a single for the upcoming ‘Timor Bersatu’ compilation with other bands from Metal Titans Timor-Leste and West Timor, Indonesia.
V: 老实说这是我第一次听到来自贵国的乐队，你能给我们介绍一下贵国的金属场景吗？有没有什么乐队可以推荐给中国乐迷？
To be honest it's the first time I've heard a band from your country, can you tell us a bit about the metal scene in your country? Are there any bands that you would recommend to Chinese fans?
S: 东帝汶的金属乐相对年轻。这种音乐流派在2000年初开始兴起，Sanctuary Golgota就是其中一支在东帝汶开创这种音乐流派的乐队。我们有十几支金属乐队，而且数量还在慢慢增加。大多数金属乐队都以社区为基础，大多数金属爱好者都是其中的一员。金属活动非常罕见，通常是为了某些特定目的而组织的。无论如何Sanctuary Golgota和MTTL旗下的其他乐队都在积极努力，为东帝汶所有金属乐队的发展创造有利环境，让每个乐队都有机会成为金属活动的一部分。到目前为止MTTL已经为东帝汶的3支乐队参加去年12月（2024 年）在西帝汶举行的阿坦布阿失真音乐节做出了卓越的贡献，我们希望在未来的日子里实现更多的梦想。
Metal in Timor is relatively young. The genre begun sparked in early 2000 and Sanctuary Golgota was one among the others that pioneered the genre in the country. We have about a dozen of metal bands and the number is slowly growing. Most metal bands are community-based, and most metalheads are part of them. Metal events are very rare and often organized for certain specific agenda. Regardless, Sanctuary Golgota and other bands under MTTL are actively working hard to build just a conducive environment for all metal bands in Timor Leste to grow and give every band chance to be part of the metal initiative. So far MTTL has done quite a remarkable work bringing 3 bands from Timor Leste to Atambua Distortion in West Timor, last Decomber (2024) and we are hoping to realize more dreams in years to come.
V: 虽然这是我第一次见到来自东帝汶的乐队，但我会一直关注和支持你们的乐队，也希望通过这次采访，能有更多的中国乐迷关注和支持你们国家的乐队，最后有什么想对中国乐迷说的吗？
Although it's my first time to meet a band from Timor-Leste, I will keep following and supporting your band, and I also hope that through this interview, more Chinese fans will pay attention to and support the bands from your country, do you have anything you want to say to your Chinese fans at the end?
S: 我们希望中国的朋友们能够喜欢"Echoes of Discord"中的曲目，也希望你们能够喜欢我们的音乐风格。如果有机会和你们一起摇滚，我们希望能来到中国。
We hope our Chinese friends are enjoying the tracks delivered in Echoes of Discord and that you can develop the taste for our style of music. We are hoping to be present in China if there is opportunity to rock with you guys.
