Today, we’re featuring a two-piece Slam project hailing from Detroit, USA. The duo, looking to launch a new endeavor, drew inspiration from the band Backyard Savagery—deciding to form a project in a similar vein—and thus, Rotting Aeon was born. They have just released their debut work, "PEOPLE," an album heavily infused with Slam elements, featuring crisp, programmed drums alongside old-school riffs and song structures. They have quickly emerged as a new American band well worth keeping an eye on. To mark the release of their new album, the members reached out to our magazine for an exclusive interview!

采访对象:Dan(Rotting Aeon乐队创始人)
You mentioned you’d never played slam before starting this project. What was the moment that made you decide to dive into this heavy, groovy style instead of sticking only to the death metal you were already familiar with? Where does the band’s name come from?
My brother and I were playing around with the idea of starting a new project. He sent me a band called Backyard Savagery. It was their track Mitter Saw Suicide. Not only was the track heavy, but it was a nostalgic heavy, very reminisent of the myspace days of grindcore. A snare that sounds like the top of a pan, a clicky kick, a guitar tone that sounds like it is being recorded with an sm57 and a subwoofer. We immediately wanted to try our hand at slam. We both believe music is not worth writing if we don't have fun. This seemed fun, we tried it, and we were right! (SHOUTOUT TO BACKYARD SAVAGERY!) The band's name is tragically.....random. It just sounded like something that would be Slam worthy.
The Detroit area has such a rich history in extreme music. How has the local scene and live environment shaped your riff-writing and your approach to this beatdown + slam fusion?
Thank you for giving Detroit a shout out. I am the guitarist/audio engineer. (Dan). My brother Vince (drummer/vocalist) is the one who goes to more live shows, but honestly the Detroit scene is always strong. Our hardcore scene has always been strong. It might have lows and highs of popularity, but so many people have worked hard to keep the community strong. I am not a great member. I am a full time teacher. I go to almost no shows, but I hope to go to more in the future. I have many friends who are still playing a lot. I hope to see them in person soon. The main influence they have had is to have fun with it. Being more authentic rather than try to copy a trend.
You cited Defeated Sanity and Abominable Putridity as major influences. These two bands take very different paths within brutal death metal. What do you draw from each of them, and how do you avoid simply copying these classics?
Both bands my brother, who is the big metal fan, introduced to me. My brother (Vince) knows what the sound should be. He says he always enjoys to write music with me that I (Dan) do not listen to a lot of, because it helps bring a unique perspective to the genre. I like metal, but the genres I am most familiar with are probably Post Rock and Hardcore/Punk.
You also mentioned many non-slam bands as sources of inspiration. Could you name a few and talk about how their influences creep into your songwriting?
我非常喜欢This Will Destroy You,他们的第二张和第三张专辑("Tunnel Blanket"与"Another Language")是我在创作带有绝望氛围的作品时的“必修课”。
For me, Post Rock is a huge influence. I played in a post rock band for years. I love This Will Destroy You, their 2nd and 3rd LP's (Tunnel Blanket and Another Language) are required reading for when I want to write something with a vibe of despair. My brother has always been strongly influenced by Rap, especially southern Rap from the US. (Think Gucci Mane, and Freddie Gibbs). We also both grew up listening several experimental artists, Mr. Bungle was always a major influence and inspiration to try different things.
What other styles of music do you listen to in your daily life? Do they bring any kind of influence to your work, big or small?
Speaking for myself (Dan), soundtracks are big. The soundtrack to The Beast, Lord of the Rings, anything of great merit, gives me a lot of inspiration.
Being brothers in a band is a really special dynamic. What are the best parts of creating music together? Are there any fun or frustrating moments along the way?
Its the best because we both can practically speak in code and know what we mean. We know intimately what type of music, vibe, and feeling the other wants from a song. The fact that we have played music for 20 years together makes it so much easier. We can almost read each other's minds.
Do you have a clear division of roles between you two? What is your songwriting process like?
This is a studio project right now. So I (Dan) have a home studio (Seafoam Studios). I write and record the guitar and bass, then put some drums over it and send it to Vince. Vince will give notes on the composition for the drums (he is an actual drummer) and production notes. For example, make this part longer, add this over the 2nd verse, etc.... We record everything in house. The division of labor is very well established, but its all DIY.
What do live shows mean to you? When you perform these heavy grooves for a crowd, what kind of atmosphere do you hope to create? Do you have any live performance plans for the future?
Right now, we are strict studio band. We are talking with a few trusted friends. We would love to play this stuff live. It would be fun to play to people, and play with our friends' bands. Time will tell.
Are you working on any new demos, singles or releases lately? What can listeners expect from you next? Which direction do you plan to take your sound in the future?
Yes we are. The goal is to get better all the time. Let's hope we deliver. Heavier, stupider, more ridiculous, vicious, and groovy.
It’s such a pleasure to interview this new band! Volcano Magazine will keep an eye on all your updates. To wrap up, are there any underground bands you’ve been obsessed with lately — local or otherwise — that you’d like to recommend to our readers?
Rotting Aeon 敬上
We already gave Backyard Savagery a shoutout. We would also like to shoutout the hardcore band CAW (Crying At Work). Also, we would like to express out gratitude to the interviewer. This was so much fun. One final message.... STEAL OUR MUSIC ON BANDCAMP. Streaming sites are the enemy of music. Just steal our music. We don't need your money, but we would love to hear your opinion of our music! <3
Sincerely, Rotting Aeon
