Today we'd like to introduce you to a Brutal Death Metal/Goregrind band from Russia, S.C.A.T. Guitarist Hort and bassist Don Anton formed the band in 2006, and the first single was also officially released in 2006, and in 2009 the band released their first EP album "Kill the Swine!", the album contains eleven songs, although only ten minutes, but they perfectly interpreted the style of Czech Grindcore bands, weird, distorted tone, mid-tempo grindcore is also the band's biggest feature, and then to speed-based At the time, S.C.A.T. was a Czech Grindcore band with a strong Groovy element. 2011 saw the release of the band's first album "Apopatophobia" on Russian label Coyote Records, which was well received in Russia and beyond. What does the name mean?

Hello to all Chinese (and not only) grindcore fans! Yep, bro, you’re right: this is indeed our first interview for a Chinese magazine/webzine. It’s great! So how it get started. The idea of forming the band came about back in the now distant year 2006, thanks to guitarist Hort and bassist Don Anton. That’s when our first songs came to life. At that time, there was a domination of mid-tempo grindcore, especially in Czech music grind-scene. Many bands from that time inspired us to create music of this kind — extreme, occasionally dark, yet incredibly danceable and fun, complete with grotesque and twisted lyrics. As for the name S.C.A.T., that emerged in the same year 2006, it’s an abbreviation that underscores the spirit of themes we explore in our stuff — sort of necro-scatological perversions taken to the absurd. Every attentive fan can decipher it, especially since we’ve embedded its meaning in the title of one of our releases. So go ahead, dare to explore! Ha-ha. 🤘

You've always kept the original line-up and never changed any of the members, I think that makes you very close in terms of songwriting as you know each other very well and know what kind of music each other wants to create, can you tell us a little bit about your songwriting process?

Not exactly. At the moment, only Hort and FeFe remain from the original lineup. In the year 2012 Don Anton left the band (which is why our performance at OEF 2012 took place as a trio), and he was replaced by Shutter. Undoubtedly, Shutter is an integral part of our band now. Also our drummer KanalizatoR left the band in 2021. Still his place is vacant. All members of the band have very different musical preferences. Really, we listen to a wide variety of genres. But thanks to these diverse tastes, S.C.A.T.'s stuff cannot be labeled as “classic” grindcore associated with any specific music “school” — whether German, Czech, French, Latin American, or even Russian. Sometimes our music truly stands out in the grind scene. And it’s ok for us. For us, grindcore is freedom, including within our music. Of course, if we consider grindcore as music at all! 😉
V: 你们乐队的Logo绝对是我见过的最有创意的Logo,是谁为你们设计的?你们的专辑封面也非常独特,是谁为你们设计的?
Your band's logo is definitely the most creative logo I've ever seen, who created it for you, and your album artwork is very unique, who designed the artwork for you?

Hort and Don Anton created the logo, not designers from outside the band. Describing how the idea came about is challenging — it was pure inspiration, ha-ha. Initially, the recognizable logo was drawn with a knife on the ground during a park outing. Within a couple of days, Don Anton brought the concept to life using Photoshop on a computer. That’s how it appeared on our debut EP, “Kill the Swine!” About album artworks — starting from the album “Apopatophobia,” we’ve collaborated with very good friend of us Eugeny (vocalist from grindcore band Sordid Clot). In our view, his works are incredible! Visually, it fully captures what we convey through sound and lyrics.
V: 您的音乐主题是恐怖和Porn,为什么选择这样的音乐主题?你想通过这个音乐主题表达什么?你写歌词吗?他的灵感来源是什么?
Your musical themes are about horror and Porn, why did you choose such musical themes? What do you want to express through this music theme? Did you write any lyrics and who wrote them? What was his inspiration?

Horror and Eroticism definitely are not the only topics we discuss. It can be said that Coprophilia themes dominate in our lyrics. Why we speak about that? This is so natural. All living beings defecates daily — it’s an integral part of our existence. Within people lies an incredible microcosm with its own laws and chaos. Pretending that this isn’t a part of ourselves, that it’s something foreign and shameful, would be self-deception. We are explorers of this microcosm and everything related to it. We speak loud without any shame. Of course, we are not unique in this regard. Such themes are used in many grindcore and death metal bands. However, it’s close to our hearts and minds. Despite our song titles translated in English, our lyrics was written in Russian. Translating that all while preserving phonetic nuances, idiomatic expressions, and cultural identity is challenging. Sometimes even translated titles fail to convey the wordplay embedded in our native language. But what can we do? Especially when our vocalist expresses it all in the international language of guttural growls — words become pure primal roar! 😉

You've released albums with Base Record Production, Bizarre Leprous Production, Coyote Records - all great labels, how did you get in touch with these labels to collaborate?

You also have to mention RottenRollRex — an outstanding grind label from Germany that deserves attention. It was Marco, the owner of RRR, who first responded to our stuff. In 2010, we released a 2-way split album with Choked By Own Vomits through RRR. Many people ask us about the secret to our “success”, but honestly, there’s no secret. We send our music to labels we admire, to ones whose releases we listen to ourselves. If they appreciate our stuff, job is done.

You formed in 2006 but your first release was only in 2009, why did you choose to release an album three years later? You haven't released anything as a band since 2019, what's the reason why you haven't released any new material, I know that the four of you formed a band called Madest old school grindcore band, were you guys busy with this band and that caused S.C.A.T to be put on hold?

It was in 2008 that we took our first steps onto the stage. But those two years from 2006 leading up to our debut were not just about crafting and mastering our stuff. The heart of our way lay in assembling the remaining members of our band: our percussive forcerer — Kanalizator, and our vocal sorcerer — FeFe. It was only after FeFe joined us in late 2008 that our band truly came alive, stomping stages and birthing our noise attacks. As for Madest project. You see, our musical inclinations began to diverge. We sensed that S.C.A.T.'s artistic trajectory was veering from our original «shitty gore grind» path. It dawned upon us that we had a distinct expression waiting to burst forth — an old-school grindcore manifestation infused with sharp social commentary, all written in the universal tongue of English. Thus, with the same lineup, we created Madest. But since 2020 — the tumultuous times that swept across the world. Various reasons, you know. Challenges that affected everyone. Unfortunately, it’s an ongoing struggle.

It's been a long time since you guys released anything but I've been following your band and I'm really impressed with your band, especially your recordings are so clean and have melodies that I can't get out of my head, your singers are really great, I love your singing so much, the whistle blowing is really enjoyable, and your backing singers are super watery with their guttural voices, what's your opinion of your own material?
S: 你知道,很难客观地评价我们自己的艺术。但毫无疑问,我们对自己的创作非常投入!每首歌都有我们的个人风格--这里没有复制粘贴的废话。当灵感迸发时,我们会寻找那些动听的旋律和新鲜的东西,同时牢牢把握住Grindcore歌曲的节奏。也许这就是我们没有大量发行的原因。我们的新歌并不是每一个吉他旋律都能入选。我们一直在寻找独一无二的东西,寻找我们从未做过的东西。
You know, it’s hard to be all objective about our own art. But hey, we’re totally into what we create, no doubt! Every song gets our personal flair — no copy-paste nonsense here. When inspiration hits, we seek those earworm melodies, something fresh, all while keeping our feet firmly in the danceable grindcore. Maybe that’s why we don’t have a ton of releases. Not every guitar riff makes the cut for our new songs. We’re always on the hunt for something unique, something we haven’t done before.

Your album artwork is really outstanding in terms of recording, I love your recording results so much, what studio did you all record the album in? Which recording engineer recorded your albums?
S: 好吧,至于走过我们道路的录音师,只有“The Greatest Shits”专辑的混音和母带制作不是由我们自己完成的,而是由一位朋友完成的。当然他取得了辉煌的胜利!但是S.C.A.T.发行的其他所有专辑都是我们自己亲手制作的。是的在不同的录音室录制,但混音和母带都是由我们按照永恒的原则完成的:D.I.Y. - Do It Yourself!
Well, as for the sound engineers who’ve walked our path, only “The Greatest Shits” album was mixed and mastered by someone other than ourselves — a friend who faced the challenge of extreme genres for the first time. Sure he triumphed splendidly! But all other S.C.A.T. releases were our own handwork. Yep, recorded in various studios, but mixed and mastered by us accorded to the timeless principle: “D.I.Y. — Do It Yourself!”
V: 你们的乐队曾在许多音乐节上进行过现场表演,有哪些音乐节给你们留下了深刻的印象?能描述一下这些音乐节的氛围吗?
Your band has played a lot of festivals very live, what are some of the festivals that have left a lasting impression on you? Can you describe the atmosphere at those festivals?
S: 几乎每个音乐节的气氛都无法形容!真的,你必须亲身经历。当然,Grindcore音乐节的摇篮--Obscene Extreme音乐节在我们心中永远占有一席之地。我们还想提及俄罗斯的夏季音乐节“Shallow Grave”,它的阵容和组织工作一直都很令人满意。与俱乐部音乐节不同,露天音乐节的确有其独特的氛围,因此能让人久久回味。音乐节的场地、周围的空间--所有这一切都会影响你的心情、你的感知等等。
The atmosphere at litteraly every festival is indescribable! No, really, you just have to experience it. Of course, The Obscene Extreme Festival — the cradle of grindcore fests — holds a permanent place in our hearts. We’d also like to mention the Russian summer festival “Shallow Grave”, which consistently delights with its lineups and organization. Open-air events indeed have their own unique atmosphere, unlike club festivals, so it linger in your memory for a long time. The festival grounds, the space around it — all of it influences your mood, your perceptions, and much more.
V: 你们已经很久没有发行新专辑了,2024年有什么新工作要进行吗?比如创作、录制新歌或者参加更多的音乐节,能透露一些信息吗?
It's been a long time since you've had a new release, do you have any new work coming up in 2024? Like writing, recording some new songs or playing more festivals, can you reveal some information to people?
S: 我们目前正在俄罗斯演出,并为2024年秋天在拉丁美洲的首次大型巡演做准备。新歌正在创作中,我们已经开始将它们融入到现场演出中。但至于正式发行,现在还很难计划。2024年肯定不行,也许是2025年,但我们还是不要预测了。拭目以待吧。
We’re currently performing in Russia and gearing up for our first big tour in Latin America in the fall of 2024. New songs are in the works, and we’ve already started incorporating them into our live shows. But as for official releases, it’s challenging to plan anything right now. Definitely not in 2024. Perhaps 2025, but let’s not make predictions. Wait and see.
