London-based Dromos has emerged in the underground doom metal scene with a slow, heavy, and ritualistic sound. According to Metal Archives, they combine traditional doom with atmospheric expression, creating an almost spiritual sonic space. Their self-titled EP features only two long tracks, yet achieves strong emotional and structural cohesion. With their signing to Argonauta Records, the band is stepping onto a broader stage.

Hey, guys! It’s great to have you here. Could you give us a brief introduction to the band and how Dromos came together? We’d also love to hear how the members first connected.

Thank you so much for having us! Dromos is a four-piece funeral doom band from London, UK formed in 2019 with deep roots in London’s heavy music underground - we’re fortunate to come from a really vibrant scene, so it wasn’t too difficult to find like-minded musicians who enjoy playing this sort of slow, deliberate style.
V: 你们会认同“funeral doom metal”这个标签吗?还是觉得自己的声音已经超出这个范畴了?
Do you identify with the “funeral doom metal” label, or do you feel your sound goes beyond that category?

Even within the elements that are very much part of funeral doom, whether it’s the heavier passages or the cleaner ones, we don’t really approach them in a strictly orthodox way. There’s always a slight shift in how we play or structure things. We’re definitely not the first to push those boundaries, but it’s something that comes naturally to us.

Are there any particular bands or styles that have influenced you, such as traditional European doom or ambient music?

When it comes to funeral doom, we owe a lot to the Finnish pioneers like Thergothon and Skepticism, their work really set the foundation for the genre. Beyond that, a lot of our broader doom influence probably leans more toward the American scene. At the same time, we all listen to a wide range of music, and those influences inevitably find their way in, whether it’s progressive rock, ambient, or even dub in some form or another. There’s a dub snare hit on every recording we have, if you’re paying attention for it.

Your debut EP Dromos consists of only two tracks, yet both feel very complete in terms of length and atmosphere. What led you to choose this “few tracks, long duration” format?

Immersion is a tricky thing, and with music like ours, which builds up slowly to create this atmosphere, it can be difficult to get the desired effect with shorter songs. We combine the gravity and weight of funeral doom with more atmospheric passages that we hope will open up even more on repeat listens.
V: “Dromos”这个名字本身在古希腊语中与“道路/通道”有关(常见于墓道),你们是否有意赋予它某种象征意义?
The name “Dromos” comes from ancient Greek, referring to a passage or pathway, often associated with tombs. Did you choose it with a specific symbolic meaning in mind?

Well there’s the first-order meaning, which you’ve identified: the definition fits, stylistically, with the music on the EP and our forthcoming LP, which was largely finished by the time we settled on a name. Then there’s the broader concept of using an architectural term with grave-side significance:in most cases the architecture will be around a lot longer than the people who commissioned it. As the band is a monument to the lost moments in time that everyone goes through – everyone’s personal ‘tears in the rain’ epiphany, if you like – the name should reflect that thematically. Also, of course, it had to look appropriately ‘metal’ when we wrote it down.

V: 你们最近签约了Argonauta Records,这对乐队意味着什么?与独立发行相比,加入厂牌后你们在创作或制作上是否有新的计划或变化?
You’ve recently signed with Argonauta Records. What does this mean for the band? Compared to being independent, have there been any changes in your approach to writing or production?

Argonauta has a track record of releasing music that resonates with us. We're really looking forward to working with the label in releasing our debut full length, out May 15th this year. We're currently fully focused on the LP release whilst prepping and rehearsing for live shows.

Your music places a strong emphasis on atmosphere and immersion. How do you recreate that experience in a live setting?
D: 我们打算把声音开到最大,把音乐玩得最重。我们的现场演出正在不断演变,旨在为观众带来一场完整的Funeral Doom体验,在吉他riff再次袭来之前,留出足够的空间让音乐自由呼吸。
We intend on being as loud and as heavy as possible. Our live set is evolving to give the audience a full funeral doom experience with enough room for the music to breathe before the riffs hit again.
V: 接下来是否有完整专辑的计划?会延续EP的方向还是做出变化?EP (Extended Play)是延长播放,比单曲(Single)长,但比专辑(Album / LP)短的一种作品形式
Are there any plans for a full-length album? Will it continue in the same direction as the EP, or are you looking to explore something different?
D: 我们即将通过Argonauta Records发行的首张全长专辑,无疑是在EP的基础上进一步发展而来的,但它更加成熟,结构更为复杂,某些部分的Death Metal影响稍减,但依然极具冲击力且沉浸感十足。
Our debut full-length album soon coming out on Argonauta Records definitely builds on the EP, but it’s more developed, more complex in structure, a little less of a death metal influence in places, but still very heavy and immersive.
V: 果让你们用一句话描述Dromos的音乐核心,那会是什么?
If you had to describe the core of Dromos in one sentence, what would it be?
D: 一道光芒穿透哀伤,无畏地抗拒着周遭的沉重。
A beam of light through mourning, defiant against the weight around it.

As we wrap up, do you have any message for doom metal listeners in China?
D: 我们了解Pest Productions和Huangquan Records等厂牌,以及Electric Lady、Zuriaake(我们在2018年Roadburn音乐节的主舞台上看过他们精彩的演出)和Mvltifission等乐队。除了重金属地下音乐圈之外,我们也是万能青年旅店的忠实粉丝。
We’re aware of labels like Pest Productions and Huangquan Records, and bands like Electric Lady, Zuriaake - who we saw play a great set on the mainstage at Roadburn 2018 - and Mvltifission. Outside of the heavy underground, we are also big fans of Omnipotent Youth Society (万能青年旅店).
