Today we interviewed Savage's Torment, a Technical Brutal Death Metal band from Colombia. Formed in 2003, Savage's Torment is a very established and respected band in Colombia, yet they remain quite low-key, having released only three demos and one full-length album. They've gained attention and support from fans with their aggressive and complex arrangements. Although they haven't released any new material since their first full-length album, "Wake Up the Horror," in 2013, their frequent performances haven't diminished their popularity. This year, they are set to release their second full-length album, and recently, the band contacted a magazine for an exclusive interview!

Hello brother, it's nice to meet you and I'm very grateful that you contacted me for an interview. Savages Torment was formed in 2003 and is a veteran band with a 23-year history. How did you form this band in the first place?

The band was formed in 2003 as the result of several musicians coming together with a shared vision: to create an authentic proposal within the extreme metal scene. From the very beginning, the project was driven by a passion for music, friendship, and the desire to deliver an intense and unique experience to the audience. At a time when the local scene had fewer opportunities and resources, we decided to develop our own sound and remain true to our identity. Throughout these 23 years, we have gone through different stages, lineup changes, and numerous challenges, but we have always maintained the same commitment to our music and to everyone who has supported us throughout this journey.

All the original members of your band have left. If there are any original members left, it's only singer Andrés who joined in 2005. The remaining members joined between 2013 and 2015. Why did the first generation of members leave the band? How did you join the band?

The departure of the first generation of members was a natural process that took place over the years. As happens with many bands that have had a long career, each member eventually followed a different path due to personal responsibilities, professional commitments, relocation, and changing priorities in their lives. However, the essence of the band never disappeared. Andrés joined the band as vocalist in 2008 through an open audition, as the band was looking for a new singer, and he took on the responsibility of keeping the project alive and continuing to build its legacy. Thanks to that perseverance, between 2013 and 2015 a new generation of musicians joined the band, bringing fresh ideas, renewed energy, and a new perspective, while always respecting the identity that the band has developed since its beginnings.

Your band's albums are very meticulous in terms of arrangement. It's clear that you have outstanding skills and put a lot of effort into polishing your work. Could you tell us about your creative process?

Our creative process has evolved significantly over the years, but it has always maintained the same philosophy: never settling for the first idea. Every composition goes through a process of development and refinement in which we strive to ensure that every element serves a purpose within the song. Usually, everything begins with a core idea—whether it's a riff, a vocal line, an atmosphere, or a lyrical concept. From there, we work collectively on the arrangements, structure, and nuances, making sure that each track has its own identity and conveys the intensity that defines the band. We also devote a great deal of time to pre-production. We record demos, analyze technical details, and experiment with different approaches until we find the right balance between aggression, technique, and musicality. We believe that extreme metal demands a high level of dedication, which is why we pay close attention to aspects such as dynamics, sound, and the overall cohesion of each album.

Your band released your first full-length album in 2013, ten years after your band was formed. The recording quality of this album is outstanding. Which studio did you record the album in? Who produced the album for you? Do you remember the recording process? What difficulties or interesting stories did you encounter while recording this album?

Yes, our full-length albums released in 2005 and 2013 represent very important moments in the band's history, and we are pleased to know that the production quality continues to be appreciated by those who discover our work years later. The 2005 and 2013 albums were recorded at SoundTech Studios under the production of Sander Bermúdez, who played a fundamental role in shaping the sound we were striving for at that time. From the beginning, we shared the goal of achieving a powerful, clear production with the necessary aggression to represent the essence of Savages Torment. We remember the recording process as a very intense and demanding period. We spent long days reviewing arrangements, repeating takes, and paying attention to every detail. We were extremely perfectionistic and wanted to ensure that the final result lived up to our expectations. Much of our time was devoted to finding the right balance between technique, heaviness, and atmosphere. As is often the case with independent productions, there were also challenges along the way. At that time, the band was going through a transitional period, and each member had personal and professional responsibilities, so coordinating schedules and maintaining a consistent workflow was not always easy. Nevertheless, those challenges ultimately strengthened everyone's commitment to the project. One of the anecdotes we remember most is the number of times certain sections were re-recorded until they sounded exactly as we had envisioned them. There were moments of exhaustion, but also plenty of laughter and a great sense of satisfaction when we finally heard the finished mixes in the studio. It was one of those experiences that tests a band's patience, yet leaves unforgettable memories in the end. Looking back, we believe that those albums perfectly captured a period of transition and growth for Savages Torment. More than a decade later, they remain works we are deeply proud of and important milestones within our discography. Without a doubt, we intend to bring that same dedication and level of commitment to our upcoming releases, proving that even after more than 20 years, we remain devoted to delivering the very best version of our music.

Your band releases music very slowly. Between 2004 and 2010, you released three demos. After releasing your first full-length album in 2013, you haven't released any new music. What's hindering your release speed? I think the main reason is the lineup issue.

Yes, lineup changes have been one of the most important factors. Keeping a band active for more than two decades means going through different stages, and every change in personnel requires time to build both musical and personal chemistry that will ultimately be reflected in the final result. However, that is not the only reason. We have always been very demanding when it comes to our work, and we prefer to take the necessary time to ensure that each release meets the standards we have set for ourselves. We are not a band that releases material simply to remain visible; we want every album to represent an evolution and possess a strong identity of its own. Ultimately, our release schedule is the result of a combination of factors: lineup changes, the constant pursuit of quality, and the belief that music should be allowed to mature before it is presented to the public. We prefer to move forward steadily while remaining faithful to our artistic vision.

Your band's logo is beautifully designed. Who designed it for you? The artwork for your 2013 album is also very unique. Who designed it? What is its meaning?

The Savages Torment logo was designed by the renowned Colombian artist Ricardo Montenegro, a highly respected figure within the Colombian death metal scene. From the very beginning, he perfectly understood the identity and vision we wanted to convey as a band. His work successfully captured the essence of Savages Torment: aggression, darkness, complexity, and an aesthetic deeply rooted in extreme metal. We believe that a logo is much more than a graphic element; it is the first impression the audience receives and a visual representation of the band's personality. Regarding the cover artwork for Wake of the Horror, the image depicts two opposing figures: one organic and one mechanical, symbolizing the conflict between human nature and technological evolution. At the center appears a celestial body engulfed in chaos and destruction, which can be interpreted as a representation of a world on the brink of collapse, while the fire and visual elements in the background reinforce this sense of decay and confrontation. The title Wake of the Horror can be understood as "In the Wake of Horror" or "After the Awakening of Horror," referring to the consequences of our decisions as a society. The album explores the idea that humanity is, to a large extent, responsible for the horrors it faces—whether through war, unchecked ambition, or the loss of its own identity. This artwork is also especially important to us because it marked a transitional period in the band's history. It was a time when we were beginning to establish a new lineup and expand both our musical and conceptual approach. Therefore, beyond its aesthetics, it represents a fundamental chapter in our journey. We enjoy seeing people find their own interpretations in our art. We believe that a great album cover does more than accompany the music—it opens the door to a conceptual universe that continues to evolve every time someone listens to the album.

Eschatology is your music theme. Why did you choose this theme? What do you want to express through it? Did you write any lyrics? Who wrote them, and what inspired them?

We chose to work with concepts related to aliens, the cosmos, and spirituality because these subjects have fascinated us since the band's early days. In reality, eschatology is not a permanent theme within Savages Torment. That particular approach was present specifically on Wake of the Horror, where we wanted to explore concepts related to horror, destruction, and the consequences of human actions. Each of the band's albums has had its own conceptual identity. In the case of Wake of the Horror, we were interested in developing a darker, more apocalyptic narrative, addressing themes such as the end times, chaos, decay, and the confrontation between different forces that can be interpreted both literally and metaphorically. We have always seen extreme metal as a vehicle for exploring what lies beyond our understanding: the origin of life, humanity's place in the universe, and the possibility that higher forms of consciousness or unknown dimensions may exist. Through these concepts, we seek to express that human beings are only a small part of something much greater. Our lyrics and artwork are intended to raise questions rather than provide answers: Where do we come from? Where are we going? What lies beyond death? Are we truly alone in the universe? For us, spirituality is not tied to any particular doctrine, but rather to the ideas of transcendence and transformation. We are interested in exploring the connection between consciousness, energy, and the cosmos, and how these concepts can coexist with the aggression and intensity of extreme metal. Our main sources of inspiration include science fiction, astronomy, ancient civilizations, Hermeticism, philosophy, and authors who have written about existence and the mysteries of the universe. We are also inspired by personal experiences and by observing the world around us, which often seems as chaotic and bewildering as any science fiction story. Ultimately, we use alien and cosmic concepts as metaphors. Extraterrestrials, entities, and interstellar landscapes represent everything humanity fears, does not understand, or has yet to comprehend. It is our way of reminding ourselves that, in the end, we are still travelers in an immense universe, trying to find meaning amidst the darkness.

All of your band's works are independently released by yourselves. I remember that your 2013 album was an independently released CD. Why don't you choose to cooperate with a label to release the album?

Throughout our career, we have had the opportunity to receive various proposals and approaches from record labels, but so far we have not found one that truly offers the guarantees, commitment, and vision that we consider necessary to entrust them with our work. We are very careful with everything related to the band: the music, the artwork, the production, and the way we present each release. After more than 20 years of building this project, we believe that any partnership with a label should be mutually beneficial and provide real value, especially in areas such as distribution, international promotion, and professional support. Remaining independent has also allowed us to maintain complete creative control over our decisions. We have never had to compromise our identity or adapt our artistic vision to fit trends or external demands, and that is something we deeply value. Of course, we are not opposed to working with a record label in the future. If a serious, transparent company with a solid proposal emerges—one that respects our artistic vision and offers strong guarantees for both parties—we would certainly be willing to consider it. In the meantime, we will continue doing things our own way, just as we have from the beginning: with hard work, perseverance, and the conviction that the music should speak for itself.

Your band's work is highly enjoyable. Your technique is outstanding, the arrangement is complex, fast, with continuous riffs, precise drum beats, and the drummer and guitarist have such great chemistry. What are your thoughts on your work?

First of all, we sincerely appreciate that recognition. As musicians, it is always gratifying to know that the time and dedication invested in each composition are perceived by those who listen to our work. We are a very self-critical band. Although we are proud of what we have built over the years, we always believe there is room for improvement and evolution. Each album represents a specific moment in the band's history and reflects both our abilities and our influences during that period. From a technical standpoint, we strive to ensure that our songs maintain a balance between complexity and personality. We want the riffs, tempo changes, and arrangements to be more than just demonstrations of skill; they should contribute to creating an intense and cohesive experience. The chemistry between the guitarist and the drummer is fundamental to our sound, and it is something that has grown stronger over the years through constant work and a shared vision of what we want to express. We also believe that technique alone is not enough. Music needs identity and emotion. Our goal has always been to create songs that, beyond being musically demanding, possess their own atmosphere and remain in the listener's memory.

Your band hasn't released any new music for a very long time. What's new in 2026? I saw on your YouTube channel that you recently released a new video, which seems to be your new single. Does this mean you're about to release a new album? Can you share some information with us?

Yes, we are currently still working on our upcoming material. The process has taken longer than we initially expected due to some last-minute delays, both in terms of production and in certain details that we consider important before presenting new music to the public. Nevertheless, the band has never stopped working, and we are very excited about what lies ahead. As a preview, we can confirm that we will soon release a new single titled "Transcending the Cosmic Synchronicity," which will serve as the introduction to our third full-length album. This track represents the direction we are currently taking, both musically and conceptually. The single delves deeper into several elements that have defined our identity over the years: the cosmos, transcendence, consciousness, and the relationship between humanity and forces beyond our understanding. Musically, it is an intense, technical, and atmospheric composition that reflects the band's natural evolution after more than two decades of existence. We cannot reveal too many details about the album just yet, but we can say that it will be our most ambitious work to date. We have invested a great deal of effort into every aspect of the production, from the songwriting and arrangements to the visual concept that will accompany the release. We deeply appreciate the patience and support of everyone who has stood by us throughout the years. We know the wait has been a long one, but we are convinced it will be worth it. We look forward to sharing "Transcending the Cosmic Synchronicity" with you very soon and, shortly thereafter, officially announcing our third full-length album.

As a veteran band, you've participated in many live performances. Which live performances left a deep impression on you? Could you describe the atmosphere of those performances? What new performances are you planning to participate in in 2026?

Fortunately, we have had the opportunity to perform on numerous stages throughout our career, and each one has left us with a unique experience. However, if there is one performance that holds a special place in the history of the band, it is undoubtedly Rock al Parque. To this day, it remains the largest and most unforgettable stage we have ever played. Sharing our music with thousands of people at one of the most important festivals in Latin America was an experience that is difficult to put into words. The energy of the crowd, the scale of the production, and the opportunity to represent our music at such a significant event marked a turning point for us. The atmosphere was simply incredible. Seeing so many people connect with our music and respond with the intensity that characterizes the Colombian metal scene reminded us why we continue to do this after so many years. It was a moment of pride—not only for the band, but also for everyone who has been part of this journey since the beginning. We also hold many other performances at festivals and independent venues close to our hearts, as they have been fundamental to our growth as a band. Each show has taught us valuable lessons and has helped strengthen our bond with our audience.

You are a very established Colombian band. I listened to your full-length album in 2013, and it left a deep impression on me. Although you haven't released any new works since then, I didn't expect you to contact me for this interview. I will continue to follow and support your band. I also hope that through this interview, more Chinese fans will pay attention to and support your band. The interview is about to end. In closing, is there anything you would like to say to your Chinese fans?

——Savages Torment

First of all, we would like to sincerely thank you for taking the time to listen to our music and for the interest you have shown in the history of Savages Torment. It is an honor for us to know that, after so many years, our work continues to reach people from different parts of the world. We are truly delighted to know that this interview will allow more fans in China to discover our music. Music has always been a universal language, and it is incredible to think that songs that began to take shape in Colombia can connect with listeners on the other side of the planet. To all of our supporters in China, we want to say: thank you for your support, your curiosity, and for keeping the passion for extreme metal alive. We hope our music accompanies you and that you find in it the same energy, intensity, and sense of reflection that we strive to convey in every composition. We are currently working on new material and look forward to sharing our upcoming single, "Transcending the Cosmic Synchronicity," very soon as a preview of our third full-length album. We are extremely excited about this new chapter and hope that you will join us on this journey. Metal knows no borders, languages, or distances. We are united by the same passion and the same community. We hope that one day we will have the opportunity to bring our music to China and share a stage with all of you. On behalf of all the members of Savages Torment, thank you for listening to us and for being part of this story.
