今天采访到的是来自德国的Technical Brutal Death Metal乐队Defeated Sanity，1993年由鼓手Lille Gruber组建，最初Lille Gruber和他的父亲学习演奏和创作极端金属的项目，随着时间的推移慢慢的1这支乐队演变成为一支真正乐队，1995年乐队发行了第一张Demo作品“Defeated”，随后乐队又发行了多张Demo，单曲，Spilt等作品之后2004年乐队在Grindethic Records厂牌发行了第一张正式专辑“Prelude to the Tragedy”便大获成功，复杂的编曲，快速，连续的Riff，凶狠毒辣，吸引了大量歌迷的关注，随后乐队放行了多张经典专辑都大获成功，这让他们成为了各大音乐节的邀请嘉宾，2024年乐队发行了他们的最新专辑“Chronicles of Lunacy”，依旧是一张高水准的做，2025年非常可惜Defeated Sanity取消了中国巡演计划，非常可惜失去一次与Defeated Sanity近距离接触的机会，但是杂志与乐队鼓手Lille Gruber取得联系进行了一次专访！

Today we're interviewing Defeated Sanity, a Technical Brutal Death Metal band from Germany. Formed in 1993 by drummer Lille Gruber, the project initially involved Lille and his father learning to play and compose extreme metal. Over time, it gradually evolved into a full-fledged band. In 1995, they released their first demo, “Defeated.” Following multiple demos, singles, and split releases, their 2004 debut album “Prelude to the Tragedy” on Grindethic Records achieved major success. Its intricate arrangements, relentless riffs, and vicious intensity captivated a vast fanbase. Subsequent classic albums continued this triumphant trajectory, earning them invitations to major music festivals. In 2024, the band released their latest album “Chronicles of Lunacy,” maintaining their high standard of work. Unfortunately, in 2025, Defeated Sanity canceled their planned China tour, depriving fans of a rare opportunity to experience them live. However, the magazine secured an exclusive interview with the band's drummer, Lille Gruber!

V: 兄弟你好，很高兴见到你，非常感谢你们乐队接受火山杂志的专访。这次采访并非你们乐队首次接受中文杂志采访，请再次向所有中国乐迷和朋友们问好。Defeated Sanity成立于1993年，是历史悠久的乐队。你们最初是如何组建这支乐队的？

Hello brother, it's nice to meet you and thank you very much for your band's interview with Volcano Magazine. This interview is not the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, so please greet all Chinese fans and friends again. Defeated Sanity was founded in 1993 and is a long established band with a long history. How did you first form this band?

L: 我们要向中国乐迷致以问候！很遗憾取消了2025年的演出，但我们期待能重返中国！！！

这支乐队最初是我和父亲学习创作极端金属并进行演出的项目，直到90年代末才真正成型。

We wanna say Hailz to the Chinese fans! We were sad to cancel the shows in 2025 and we'll hopefully coming back to China!!! This band started as a project of me and my dad learning to compose and perform extreme Metal and turned into a true band during the end of the 90s.

V: 如今乐队仅剩鼓手利尔·格鲁伯作为初代成员，其余成员均已更换。当然，作为老牌乐队，成员更迭实属常态。那么初代成员为何离队？新成员又是如何加入的？你对新成员的表现满意吗？

Now the band only has drummer Lille Gruber as the first generation member, and all other members have been replaced. Of course, as an old band, changing members is a very normal thing. So why did the first generation members leave the band, and how did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job?

L: 你说得对，阵容变动在所难免。尤其当音乐收入微薄时，有些成员不得不找份正经工作，无法承担每年休整四个月的代价。我热爱现今的阵容，真正的Death Metal正在全球传播！

U are right, line up changes are inevitable. Especially if u don't make a lot of money with the music. Some members have to start a real job and can't afford to take off for 4 months per year. I love this line up we have right now, true Death Metal is being spread throughout the world!

V: 你们的乐队成员Vaughn Stoffey和Josh Welshman来自美国，排练时可能会遇到一些困难。你们是如何排练的？乐队每位成员都是创作Death Metal音乐的资深音乐人，能否介绍你们的创作过程？相信你们的创作经验会给许多年轻音乐人带来启发！新专辑的创作进展顺利吗？

Your band Vaughn Stoffey and Josh Welshman are from the United States, so there may be some trouble during practice. How do you practice? Each member of your band is an experienced musician in creating death metal music. Can you introduce your creative process? I believe your creative experience will bring inspiration to many young musicians! Is the creative process of the new album progressing smoothly?

L: 大家都在家练习，演出前3-4天我们会聚在一起，敲定演出曲目后就万事俱备啦！！！创作过程非常顺利！歌词和旋律的灵感总是源源不断！！！

Everybody practices at home and we get together 3-4 days before the shows and then we solidify the set then we're good to go!!!! The composing process went really smoothly! Always ideas flowing for lyrics and music!!!

V: 你的每一张专辑都有很好的录音效果和显著的进步。你在哪个录音室录制了专辑？哪位制作人为你制作了这张专辑？新专辑的录制过程顺利吗？

Each of your albums has excellent recording effects and significant progress. Which studio did you record your albums in? Which producer made the album for you? Is the recording process of the new album going smoothly?

L: 我们经常更换生产商。但最后两张专辑是由Behold中的Colin Marston完成的。他让一切顺利，总是投入适量的资源！！！

We changed producers quite often. But the last 2 albums were done with Colin Marston from Behold the Arctopus. He made everything go smoothly and has always the right amount of input!!!

V: 社会、虚无主义、神秘主义、妄想、戈尔、谋杀是你的音乐主题。你为什么选择这些音乐主题？你想通过这些音乐主题表达什么？你还创建了歌词部分。谁创作了这些歌词，是什么启发了他们？

Society, Nihilism, Mysticism, Delusions, Gore, Murder are your music themes. Why did you choose these music themes? What do you want to express through these music themes? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?

L: 我们觉得Death Metal的歌词应该基于死亡、黑暗的感觉和令人不安的事实。我们总是在寻找新的黑暗事物。这是对所有黑暗事物的病态迷恋。

We feel Death Metal lyrics are supposed to be based on Death, dark feelings, disturbing facts. And we're always checking out new dark things. It's a morbid fascination for all dark things.

V: 乐队目前的Logo是你的第二个版本。你在2004年之后更改了当前的Logo。谁为你设计的新Logo？你的专辑封面也很漂亮。谁为你设计了这些专辑艺术品？这些艺术品有意义吗？

The current logo of the band is your second version. You changed the current logo after 2004. Who designed the new logo for you? Your album artwork is also very beautiful. Who designed these album artworks for you? Do these artworks have any meaning?

L: 新的Logo是Ray Wedhorn和Jon Zig之间的合作。我们做了很多不同的事情，让它变得完美。上半部分是Ray，下半部分是Jon Zig。里面有很多爱

The newer logo was a collab between Ray Wedhorn and Jon Zig. We worked on a lot of different things to make it perfect. The top part is Ray the bottom part is Jon Zig. A lot of love went into it

V: 你最初与英国的Grindethic Records合作多年，2010年与美国的Willowtip Records合作，2024年与法国的Season of Mist唱片公司合作。这些品牌都是优秀的公司。你是怎么联系他们合作的？你对这些厂牌作满意吗？你为什么终止与Willowtip Records和Grindethic Records的合作关系？

You initially collaborated with Grindethic Records in the UK for many years, Willowtip Records in the US in 2010, and Season of Mist in France for your new album in 2024. These labels are all excellent companies. How did you get in touch with them to collaborate? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands? Do you have any reasons for ending your partnership with Willowtip Records and Grindethic Records?

L: 我们一直与我们的厂牌着良好的关系。在Season of Mist我觉得我们很自在。他们似乎能为我们做得最多！尽管我们感谢Grindethic和Willowtip，他们帮助我们登上了世界地图

We always had excellent relationships with our labels. I feel we're right at home with Season of mist. Seems like they can do most for us! Although we're thankful for Grindethic and Willowtip who have helped put us on the map

First of all, congratulations to your band for releasing their latest album "Chronicles of Lunacy" in 2024. You have received a lot of attention Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Wormed, Malignancy, Disgorge, Insidious Decrepancy, Severed Savior The influence of such bands is that you are skilled, savage, and full of vitality. Guitar is very complex, with many different techniques. The sound of the guitar is heavy, heavy, and aggressive. The bass part is also recorded very clearly, with clear and rough tones that run through the mix. JLilleGruber is an excellent drummer who can easily play any strange rhythm. He played many complex patterns with different rhythms. The rhythm of the explosion is very fast and intense, followed by songwriting. The mixing is very good because all the instruments can be heard in the album. Sound production is cruel, primitive, and dirty. What do you think of your own work?

V: 作为一支经典乐队，你参加过许多音乐节。哪些音乐节给你留下了深刻的印象？你能介绍一下当时的现场气氛吗？2017年，你们接受了在中国举办的330音乐节的邀请。你也和我的朋友们一起吃中国菜。哈哈，你能谈谈你2017年的中国之行吗？如果中国组织者再次邀请你来中国，你还会愿意为中国音乐迷们带来精彩的表演吗？

As a classic band, you have participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? In 2017, you accepted the invitation to participate in the 330 Music Festival held in China. You also enjoyed Chinese cuisine with my friends. Haha, can you talk about your trip to China in 2017? If the Chinese organizers invite you to come to China again, would you still be willing to give a wonderful performance to Chinese music fans?

L: 正如我所说，我们非常渴望再次在中国演出！2017年的演出简直他妈的太棒了！我超爱那里提供的素食选择。中餐和亚洲美食可是我的最爱。粉丝们简直太疯狂了，看到有这么多乐迷到场观看演出，我们都震惊了。

As I said we'd love to play in China again! 2017 was really fucking amazing! I loved the vegetarian options u could get there. Chinese and Asian food is some of my fave. The fans were sick we were shocked that we had so many of them attending the show

V: 2025年是否有新作品计划？例如创作或录制新歌，能否与中文乐迷分享相关信息？

Do you have any new work to do in 2025? For example, when creating or recording new songs, can you share some information with Chinese fans and friends?

L: 我们正在筹备第二张Dharmata专辑。这张作品将为首张专辑增添精彩篇章，既承袭了强烈的Thrash风格，又融入大量Fusion / Prog元素，必将带来耳目一新的体验。不过DS永远不会放弃Brutal Death Metal的创作，这点请放心。

We're working on a second Dharmata release. It's gonna be a great addition to the first one. Very thrash influenced and at the same time a lot of Fusion/Prog parts. It's gonna be a breath of fresh air. DS will never not work on brutal death Metal though, so no worries there

V: 我是你们乐队的忠实粉丝，听过你们所有作品，还收藏了部分CD。我会永远追随支持你们，期待再次在中国舞台见到你们。届时我们可以共饮啤酒。访谈结束之际，您想对中国的乐迷和朋友们说些什么吗？

I am a loyal fan of your band, I have heard all of your works, and I also collect some of your CDs. I will always follow and support your band, and I hope to see you again on the Chinese stage. We can have a beer together then. Do you have anything to say to Chinese fans and friends at the end of the interview?

L: 希望我们很快能重返中国！初次造访令人难忘，更想看看自己是否有所成长。我相信这定会实现！

Hope we will come back to China very soon! Loved the first time and wanna see if we possibly grew since then. I'm sure it will happen!
