Today, we’re featuring Gull Skull—a one-person avant-garde black metal/noise project from the United States, created by Cicuta Maculata. The project recently released its debut album, *My Favorite Season: Nuclear Winter*. The record fuses icy, dissonant tremolo picking and ferocious blast beats with electronic frequencies, industrial noise, and a persistent undercurrent of static, delivering a raw, chaotic sonic experience. Hello, Cicuta Maculata. It’s a pleasure to meet you, and thank you for participating in this interview—I believe this is your first time being interviewed by a Chinese magazine. To start things off, please say hello to all your Chinese fans. In which year was Gull Skull founded, and how did you go about forming the project?

C: 中国的朋友们，你们好！感谢你们关注我的音乐！Gull Skull成立于2025年，是我进行音乐实验的渠道。我尝试融合各种流派与风格，同时保留黑金属那种阴郁、黑暗且强烈的特质。作为一名多乐器演奏者，我不仅想拓展极端金属音乐的边界，也想挑战我个人的极限。

Hello China! Thanks for taking interest in my music! Gull Skull was formed in 2025 as an outlet for my musical experimentation blending genres and styles while still mainting the brooding darkness and intensity of black metal. As a multi-instrumentalist I wanted to not only push the boundaries of what extreme metal music is, but my own limits as well.

V: 由于你是该项目中唯一的成员，你拥有完全的创作自由，可以按照自己的构想来塑造作品。能谈谈你的创作过程吗？

Since you are the only person involved in this project, you have complete creative freedom to shape the songs exactly as you envision them. Could you tell us a bit about the creative process?

C: 我的创作过程涉及大量的声音与噪音实验，我将它们层层叠加，编织成错综复杂的网。作为乐队唯一的成员，我利用循环踏板和四轨磁带录音机，不断探索各种声音、音符、音色、音调以及整体氛围的组合。我会反复即兴尝试，直到感觉完全对味为止。

My creative process involves lots of experimenting with sounds and noises, layering them together, weaving an intricate web. As the sole memeber of the band I utilize loop pedals and a 4-track tape recorder to find the combinations of sounds, notes, timbre, tones, and overall mood. Jam it out until it feels just right.

V: 这张专辑的录音质量相当不错；请问是在家庭工作室录制的，还是在专业录音棚录制的？

The recording quality of this album is quite good; did you record it in a home studio or a professional one?

C: "My Favorite Season: Nuclear Winter"是在Rampike Studios录制的，那其实就是我的家庭工作室。

V: 你们所有的视觉设计——包括乐队标志和专辑封面——都非常独特。这些都是你自己创作的吗？你的专辑封面设计灵感来源于什么？

All your artwork—including your logos and album art—features unique designs. Do you create these yourself? What inspires your album art designs?

C: 我一直从事艺术创作，并秉持着“自己动手”的精神，因此乐队标志是我亲自设计的。专辑封面源自一张关于近期轰炸袭击的照片，我对其进行了处理。我希望借此传达战争是如何被掩盖和模糊化的，于是选择以图像的形式呈现这些事件。

Been an artist my whole life, and adhereing to D.I.Y. ethos, I created the band logo myself. The album cover is a picture of a recent bombing attack, in which I altered. Seeking to convey how war can be obscured and obfuscated, I choose to present those actions in the form of an image.

What is the theme of your music? Why did you choose this theme, and what do you wish to express through it? Did you write the lyrics, and what inspired them?

C: "My Favorite Season: Nuclear Winter"这一作品的核心主题，是当下正在进行的战争，以及核毁灭这一极其真实的威胁。战争无处不在，核弹的阴影始终笼罩着我们。当今世界竟是这般模样，既令人抓狂，又令人悲哀。我想营造出一种声音，它要像战争本身一样，既充满严厉的斥责，又具有彻底摧毁一切的力量——就像是在收听一场播报各种暴行的广播节目。歌词全由我亲自撰写，以此表达我对现实中无尽死亡与破坏的不满和沮丧。

The overacrching theme of My Favorite Season: Nuclear Winter is the current wars being waged and the very real threat of nuclear annihilation. War is all around us, a nuclear bomb looming over us. It is maddening and saddening that this is the state of our world. I wanted to create a sound that is equally berating and eviscerating as war itself, as if listening to a radio broadcast highlighting atrocities. All the lyrics were written by me as a way to express my dissatisication and frustration with the reality of endless death and destruction.

V: 你的首张专辑目前可以在Bandcamp上免费下载；你是否考虑过发行CD或其他实体版本？有没有与任何唱片厂牌探讨过合作事宜？

Your debut album is currently available for free download on Bandcamp; have you considered releasing it on CD or in other formats? Have you been in touch with any record labels about a collaboration?

C: 我确实有计划将这张专辑制作成CD和黑胶唱片发行。目前我还没有与任何唱片厂牌取得联系。

I have plans to release the album as CDs and records. I haven't been in contact with any record labels yet.

V: 这张专辑的灵感来源是什么？

What was the inspiration behind this album?

C: 我的首张专辑灵感来源广泛：鸟鸣、蝉噪、穿过树林的阵风、炸弹的轰鸣、落在阵亡士兵尸体上的雨声、军队将领近乎疯狂的笑声、垂死孩童的哭喊、坦克履带碾压地面的声响，以及直升机旋翼的轰鸣。我将战时的混乱与破坏，与大自然宁静安详的声音并置在一起。

Many things gave inspiration for my debut album: birds chirping, cicadas buzzing, wind blowing through trees, bombs exploding, rain falling on a field of dead soldiers, the manical laugh of army generals, the cries of dying children, tank treads rolling, helicopter rotors whirring. Chaos and devastation of wartime fighting juxtaposed with the calming, tranquil sounds of nature.

First of all, congratulations on the release of your new album this year. Your work falls within the realm of avant-garde black metal and noise; you fuse icy, abrasive tremolo picking and ferocious blast beats with electronic frequencies, industrial drones, and sustained static noise, unleashing a sense of chaos that is both primal and sonically overwhelming. What are your thoughts on your own work?

C: 我试图尽可能地打破传统与常规，模糊音乐与噪音之间的界限——我认为我做到了。我创造出了一种既美又丑的事物。

In an attempt to push tradition and convention as far as possible to blend the lines of music and noise, I believe I was successful in that endeavor. Creating something beautiful and ugly.

V: 在这张专辑发行之后，你还有什么新的计划吗？比如继续创作或录制新作品？能和大家分享一些细节吗？

What new projects do you have lined up after the release of this album—such as continuing to write or recording new material? Could you share some details with everyone?

C: 目前我正在为"My Favorite Season: Nuclear Winter"中的几首歌制作音乐视频。我一直都在演奏音乐、进行创作、尝试各种实验并打磨构思。Gull Skull乐队预计会在2027年左右推出一张新专辑。

Currently working on music videos for a couple songs from My Favorite Season: Nuclear Winter. I'm always playing music, writing, experimenting and hashing out ideas. There should be a new Gull Skull album sometime in 2027.

V: 哪些乐队对你有影响？能列举一些你最喜欢的乐队吗？

Which bands have influenced you? Could you name some of your favorite bands?

C: 很多乐队和音乐流派都对我产生过影响，从古典乐、民谣到极端金属和噪音核，不一而足。我非常欣赏那些善用不协和音的古典作曲家，比如巴赫和斯特拉文斯基。当然，我也从“第二波”黑金属乐队（如Carpathian Forest和Darkthrone）那里汲取了灵感。我的音乐灵感来源广泛，从汉克·威廉姆斯到Agalloch，从闵惠芬到Zuriaake，都有所涉猎。我也非常钟情于 Blut Aus Nord和Deathspell Omega。Bathory和Celtic Frost则是我心目中最喜欢的两支乐队。

Many bands/genres influence me, from classical and folk to extreme metal and noisecore. Big fan of classical composers who use dissonance, such as Bach and Stravinsky. Of course I'm inspired by 2nd wave black metal bands like Carpathian Forest and Darkthrone. I'm influenced by Hank Williams to Agalloch, and Min Huifen to Zuriaake. Really vibe with Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega. Two of my all-time favorite bands are Bathory and Celtic Frost.
