Selvans is an Italian black metal solo project that began in 2014, releasing two very good albums, Lupercalia and Faunalia, and will release their final album Saturnalia next year, after which the project will be terminated. It is also the final installment of the Selvans trilogy. Selvans' music has a mysterious and archaic vibe that celebrates ancient Italian mythology, and when you hear their music, you are drawn to this ancient, eerie sound that keeps you hooked like a whirlpool. Today we caught up with Selvans for an interview.

Hello brother, nice to meet you and thank you for your interview with Volcano magazine. This is probably your first and last encounter with Chinese metal fans. Say hello to Chinese music fans first. When did the Selvans personal project start? Why did you think of forming a black metal project ?

S: 嗨,伙计们!十年前我开始了我的旅程。年轻的我觉得这种金属风格最适合描述第一张专辑的古老氛围，这与罗马前意大利的古老仪式和流行信仰有着深刻的联系。

Hi guys! I started my journey ten years ago. The younger me felt that this style of metal was the most appropriate to describe the archaic atmosphere of the first album, which is deeply connected to ancient rituals and popular beliefs of pre-Roman Italy.

V: 说实话，我也是一个金属音乐作曲家。听了你的音乐我觉得你的音乐有非常丰富的编曲和优秀的旋律。你能谈谈你是如何创作音乐的吗？

To be honest, I am also a metal music composer. After listening to your music, I think your music has very rich arrangements and excellent melody. Could you talk about how you create your music?

S: 你在我的专辑里听到的每一个音符都是我写的。我不仅喜欢制作音乐，还喜欢围绕它的整个概念。我为艺术作品创造了概念，一切都与selvans有关。在音乐方面我写了每一个部分并与每个音乐家密切合作来编排。

I have written every single note you hear in my discography. I enjoy producing not just music, but also the entire concept surrounding it. I created the concepts for the artwork, and everything has been Selvans-related. Regarding the music, I wrote every part and worked closely with each musician to arrange it.

V: 你的音乐主题主要是意大利民间的鬼故事。你能告诉我你为什么选择这个主题吗？

The theme of your music is mainly Italian folk horrors . Could you tell me why you chose this theme?

S: 这是我最喜欢的主题之一。我们国家的黑暗故事超越了时间和空间！在第一张专辑"Lupercalia"中，正如我之前提到的我从原始时代开始。从那时起我经历了不同的时代，塑造了你们今天听到的声音

It's one of my favorite themes. The dark tales of my country transcend time and space! With the first album, Lupercalia, as I mentioned earlier, I started from primordial times. Since then, I've journeyed through different eras, shaping the sound you hear today.

V: 乐队的音乐以长歌为主，大部分歌曲都在10分钟左右，有的甚至达到17分钟。你为什么选择创作这么长的歌曲

The music of the band is mainly long songs, and most of the songs are about 10 minutes, and some even reach 17 minutes. Why do you choose to create such long songs?

S: 不再再有了，"Saturnalia"只有38分钟。在过去长歌是自然而然的……在这首曲子中，只有一首长歌作为最后的组曲。

Not anymore. Saturnalia will only be 38 minutes long. In the past, long songs came naturally... In this one, there’s just one long piece that acts as the final suite.

V: 请问你认为古典音乐对你的音乐创作有影响吗？我在你的音乐中听到了很多弦乐，还有一些古典的旋律结构。

Excuse me, do you think classical music has any influence on your music creation? I hear a lot of strings in your music, and some kind of classical structure of the melody.

S: 古典音乐在某种程度上影响着每个人，不管他们是否意识到这一点。

Classical music influences everyone to some extent, whether they realize it or not.

V: 你对你的Heavy / Black Meta作品满意吗？为什么你会想到在你的音乐中加入Classic和Progressive Rock元素？

Are you happy with your heavy/black metal work and why did you come up with the idea of adding classic and progressive rock elements to your music?

S: 这感觉很自然，Heavy Metal和Progressive Rock一直是我音乐背景中的重要元素。2018年Selvans在"Faunalia"的某些部分开始形成这种戏剧性的方法。随着"Saturnalia"的到来，它已经成为决定性的，这也是为什么不会有第四张Selvans专辑的原因。这个循环完成了。

It felt natural. Heavy metal and progressive rock have always been strong elements in my musical background. This theatrical approach for Selvans began to take shape in 2018 with certain parts of Faunalia. With Saturnalia, it has become definitive, which is also why there won’t be a fourth Selvans album. The cycle is complete.

V: 你有没有最喜欢的Black Metal属乐队或者你觉得对你有很大影响的乐队？

Do you have any favorite black metal bands or bands that you feel have had a big influence on you?

S: 不按类型划分：King Diamond，Mercyful Fate，Burzum，Type O Negative，Savatage，Dissection，Blind Guardian，Judas Priest，Symphony X……我不确定这些艺术家是否直接影响了我。当我写自己的音乐时，我不会考虑其他音乐。

Without dividing by genre: King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Burzum, Type O Negative, Savatage, Dissection, Blind Guardian, Judas Priest, Symphony X... I’m not sure if all these artists have directly influenced me. I don't think about other music when I'm writing my own.

V: 你的新专辑"Saturnalia"将是最后一张。你为什么会做出这样的选择？你为2025年宣布的“死后惊喜”是什么？

Your new album 'Saturnalia' will be the last one. Why have you made this choice and what are the 'posthumous surprises' you announce for 2025?

S: 从一开始我就设想了一个三部曲的专辑，作为我创作的最终表达。然后许多事情发生了：Spilt合作，阵容变化以及紧张的现场活动时刻。现在，0年过去了，我决定结束这个项目。然而仍有几首未发行的歌曲！这就是为什么在"Saturnalia"发行之后，我将在明年以另外两部作品告别（一部Spilt和另一个发行）。

From the beginning, I envisioned a trilogy of albums as the ultimate expression of my creation. Then, many things happened: split albums, collaborations, lineup changes, and moments of intense live activity. Now, after 10 years, I’ve decided to end the project. However, there are still several unreleased songs! This is why, after the release of Saturnalia, I will bid farewell with two additional releases next year (a split and one of another kind).

V: 明年年底，在Selvans的结束之后，会有一些新的项目吗？

There will be some new project after Selvans last breath at the end of the next year?

S: 不会有
