Today's interview features the Italian metal band 81db. Their music blends heavy instrumentation with progressive and alternative rock melodies, along with the distinctive Eastern tones of the bouzouki. 81db was formed in 2006 by guitarist Kostas in Florence, Italy. This is a metal band that is extremely difficult to categorize, as their music incorporates a wide range of elements from various genres. Kostas' Greek cultural background has infused 81db's music with an Eastern musical flair. In 2007, 81db was selected as the opening act for Deep Purple's concert in Turin, Italy. The band released their debut album, “Evaluation”, in Italy and Greece (EMI) in 2009. The album received high praise in Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, and other European countries, and was selected as the best album of 2009 by the editors of Greece's “Metal Hammer” magazine. On June 6, 2025, 81db released their new album “Nostos” after a 12-year hiatus. The album garnered widespread attention in Europe, and the magazine reached out to the band, who had just concluded their Central European tour, for this exclusive interview.

Ciao! First of all, thank you very much for participating in this interview. Greetings to everyone in 81db! This should be your first interview with a Chinese metal magazine. Could you please start by briefly introducing 81db? When was the band formed? How did the band members meet?

C: 你好！能接受中国首家金属网络杂志的采访，我们感到非常荣幸，我们一直致力于将我们的音乐带给尽可能广泛的听众。81db乐队于2006年在意大利佛罗伦萨由吉他手Kostas Ladopoulos创立。乐队的理念是通过融合旋律与重型吉他riff并融入Kostas希腊血统中的民乐元素，打造一支具有现代风格的乐队。鼓手Filippo Capursi与贝斯手Vieri Pestelli自乐队成立之初便构成了81db稳固的节奏基石，而主唱Luca Giannoni于2022年加入乐队，此前因前主唱于2017年离队而短暂暂停活动。这一变动开启了乐队历史的新篇章，最终于今年推出了全新专辑"Nostos"。

Ciao! It’s a great pleasure for us to give this interview on the first Chinese Metal webzine, we are always keen to bring our music to the widest audience possible. 81db was formed in 2006 in Florence, Italy, by guitarist Kostas Ladopoulos. The idea was to make a modern-sounding group by combining melodies and heavy riffs with folk elements derived from Kostas’ Greek origins. Filippo Capursi on drums and Vieri Pestelli on bass became the solid rhythmic base of the 81db sound since the beginning, while vocalist Luca Giannoni joined the band in 2022, after a brief hiatus due to the former singer leaving in 2017. This started a new chapter in the band’s history, culminating in our newly released album, Nostos, this year.

Next, I'd like to talk about your new album, Nostos. The first song on the album is very impressive, with a catchy riff at the beginning that reminds me of Gojira's sound. It's one of my favorite songs on the new album. I'd like to ask you about the creative process behind this song.

C: “Hybris”是我们最早完成的歌曲之一，它来自Kostas的音乐宝库。这首歌是在我们决定制作新专辑之前创作的，但它与专辑的风格非常契合，因此我们决定将其收录其中，结果证明这是一个明智的决定！

“Hybris” is one of the first songs we finalised and it comes from Kostas’ musical vault. It was written before we decide to make e new record but it fitted the style so well that we decided to include it too, and that turn out great it seems!

I saw the music video for the last song on your new album, “Jump to Hyperspace,” on your YouTube account. The animation in this music video is very elaborate, with some exotic riffs, and I really like the vocals in this song. The lyrics of this song have a very different theme from the other songs. Could you share the writing process behind this song?

"Nostos"的核心主题之一是“旅程”的概念，这一主题在歌曲"Jump to Hyperspace"中得到了具体地体现。我们希望将这一概念与音乐中令人振奋且带有科幻风格的氛围相融合，从而在歌词中呈现出一次宇宙航行的意象。这次航行某种程度上反映了人类的进化历程、当前状态以及对来自未知领域的召唤几乎无法抗拒的回应——外太空既是新的边疆，也是未来生存的希望。

One of the central themes of Nostos is the idea of journey, which is reflected particularly in the song “Jump to Hyperspace”. We wanted to match this concept with the electrifying and kind of sci-fi vibes of the music, leading to the idea in the lyrics of a cosmic voyage. This voyage sort of reflects human evolution, its current state and the almost compelling need to answer the call from beyond, towards outer space as both a new frontier and a hope for future survival.

V: 新专辑"Nostos"的许多歌词和个人的对生命的感悟有关，我认为和大多数的金属乐队相比你们的歌词非常个人，关注的重点集中在个人感受上，我想问问在你们的创作过程中是谁负责创作歌词？你们写出这些歌词的灵感来源主要是什么？

Many of the lyrics on your new album Nostos are related to personal reflections on life. I think that compared to most metal bands, your lyrics are very personal and focus on individual feelings. I would like to ask who is responsible for writing the lyrics in your creative process? What are the main sources of inspiration for your lyrics?

C: 新专辑中的大部分歌词均由主唱Luca创作，而吉他手Kostas则专门为"Whispers of the Eternal Veil"和"Rêverie"两首歌曲撰写了歌词。Luca的歌词内容涵盖了从社会和普世主题到，如你所提到的，更个人化和私密的话题，例如个人的不安全感、恐惧、抑郁和自我怀疑。这些歌词通常源于我们个人的经历，并逐渐扩展到涵盖一系列人类情感，我们相信任何听众都能从中产生共鸣并看到自己的影子。

Most of the lyrics in the new album have been written by the vocalist Luca, whilst guitarist Kostas specifically wrote the lyrics for “Whispers of the Eternal Veil” and “Rêverie”. Lucas’s lyrics tend to span from social and universal themes to, as you mentioned, more personal and intimate topics, such as one’s own insecurities, fears, depression, and self-doubt. This typically starts from our own individual experiences and evolves to encompass a range of human emotions we believe any listener can feel connected to and see themselves into.

V: 你们的新专辑和上一张专辑"A Blind Man's Dream"隔了12年的时间，请问为什么两张专辑中间隔了这么久，决定创作新专辑"Nostos"的契机是什么？

Your new album, Nostos, comes 12 years after your previous album, “A Blind Man's Dream”. Why was there such a long gap between the two albums, and what inspired you to create “Nostos”?

After our third album “A Blind Man's Dream ” in 2013, we published a “Best of” including a new single “The Monkey” in 2017, then sadly our previous singer, William, left shortly after and we went through a brief hiatus. However, this did not stop entirely our creative process, as we released an instrumental EP in 2021, “The Movie Sessions 17/21” . Then, in 2022, when Luca joined, we wanted to really start anew. This was exactly the inspiring concept behind the creation of “Nostos”: indeed, the title of the album is a Greek word meaning "homecoming", and for us it is truly a sort of return home... A coming back after a long time, to our origins, but with a sense of unpredictability and restlessness, and with an eye towards the future ahead! Nostos marks our return, not just to the stage, but to the core of what 81db has always been: bold, emotional, and uncompromisingly original.

V: 在新专辑和上一张专辑之间的这12年间，乐队的成员们各自有什么音乐项目吗？这是否影响了81db在"Nostos"专辑中的音乐方向？

During the 12 years between the new album and the previous one, did the band members have any individual music projects? Did this influence the musical direction of 81db's Nostos album?

C: 我们几乎所有人都做过一些分支乐队，但都没有做得很大，只是为了演奏音乐，因为我们热爱音乐。新专辑中的一大影响因素无疑是Luca作为新主唱的加入，他独特的演唱风格和音乐背景为我们的音乐增添了一丝粗犷、朋克和摇滚的氛围，也让新专辑朝着未曾探索过的领域迈进，我们在其中尝试了比以往更黑暗、更沉重的音色。

Almost all of us did some side projects but nothing really big, it was all just to play music, because we love that. One of the influences in the new album was surely the addition of Luca as the new vocalist, with his own style of singing and his musical background, adding a bit of rawness, of punk and grungy vibes to our music, and helping the new album to travel towards uncharted territories, where we experimented a bit with darker and heavier sounds than ever before.

V: "Nostos"的音乐元素非常多元，这是一张在我看来有些难以分类的专辑，你们会如何定义这张专辑的风格以及现在的81db的风格呢？

The musical elements in Nostos are very diverse. In my opinion, it is an album that is somewhat difficult to categorize. How would you define the style of this album and the current style of 81db?

C: 这是一个我们经常面临且觉得难以回答的问题，说实话：81db的风格被媒体以多种方式定义，例如“重型摇滚”、“另类或前卫或甚至新金属”、“先锋金属”，甚至一些我们喜欢的奇特术语，如“布祖基金属”或“穆萨卡金属”。我们一直给自己定义的音乐类型是“前卫另类重型民谣摇滚”，也就是说，我们并不觉得自己完全属于某个特定的传统音乐类型。在我们的绝大多数作品中，包括《Nostos》，我们成功地将一种特别重金属的风格与希腊传统乐器布祖基（类似于曼陀林）相结合，创造出一种非常独特的音色。如果我们遵循某些流派的固定模式，就无法达到这种效果。

That’s a question we often faced and found quite difficult to answer, to be fair: 81db’s style has been defined in so many ways by the press, such as “heavy rock”, “alternative or prog or even nu metal”, “avant-garde metal”, down to some quirky terms we loved like “bouzouki metal” or “moussaka metal”. The definition of our genre that we have always given ourselves is “progressive alternative heavy rock folk”, which is to say that we do not feel too inserted into a precise classical genre. In most of our production, including “Nostos”, we have managed to combine a particularly heavy style with a typical Greek instrument, the bouzouki (similar to the mandolin), creating a very particular sound. If we had adapted to certain genre schemes, we would not have been able to obtain it.

V: 如果要用一首新专辑"Nostos"里的歌曲向没有听过81db的乐迷介绍你们乐队，你会选择哪一首歌？

If you had to choose one song from your new album Nostos to introduce your band to fans who haven't heard 81db before, which song would you choose?

C: 很可能是"Eastern Tango"。它完美地融合了我们前卫、重型和民谣音乐的风格，所有元素都浓缩在这一首作品中！

Most probably “Eastern Tango”. It combines perfectly our progressive, heavy and folk musical directions, all in one piece!

V: 这张新专辑包含许多来自不同流派的音乐元素，可以分享一下对你们影响最大都有哪些乐队吗？可以是金属乐队也可以是其他任何风格的音乐家。

This new album incorporates many musical elements from different genres. Can you share which bands have had the greatest influence on you? They can be metal bands or musicians of any other style.

C: 能算得上是直接灵感的没有。我们的灵感来源主要来自音乐和概念层面，因此我们可以提及Metallica、Faith No More、Tool、Gojira、Dream Theater、Pain of Salvation和System of a Down。乐队每位成员都会将自己的音乐品味和背景融入音乐创作中，这有助于塑造我们独特的81db音乐风格。

There is no true direct inspiration. Our references are primarily musical and conceptual, so we can surely mention Metallica, Faith No More, Tool, Gojira, Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation and System of a Down. Each member of the band tends to bring a little of their own tastes and background into the music, which helps creating our original 81db’s sound.

V: 大部分的乐迷对于来自意大利的金属乐比较陌生，许多的中国乐迷也非常好奇意大利的金属乐场景是怎样的，可以就你所观察到的情况分享一下，在你看来意大利金属乐场景的情况吗？

Most music fans are unfamiliar with Italian metal music, and many metalheads from China are very curious about the Italian metal music scene. Could you share your observations and give us your take on the Italian metal music scene?

C: 意大利金属乐坛非常多元化且充满活力。虽然可能没有太多进入主流的乐队（最近值得一提的或许是Lacuna Coil），但地下乐坛异常活跃，并分支出如此众多的流派和子流派。意大利有许多值得一听的金属乐队，尤其是我们所在的托斯卡纳地区和佛罗伦萨周边。

The Italian metal scene is very diverse and very much alive and kicking. There may not be many bands crossing into mainstream (maybe Lacuna Coil recently, as one noteworthy to mention), but the underground is very fervent and branched into so many genres and subgenres. There are lots of Italian metal bands worth listening to, particularly from our home region, Tuscany and the Florence area.

V: 乐队接下来有没有巡演的计划？我想知道在你们现在的演出歌单里，来自新专辑的歌曲和旧的歌曲大概是什么比例？在"Nostos"发行后你们是怎样给演出歌单挑选歌曲的？

Does the band have any plans for a tour? I'd like to know what the approximate ratio is between songs from the new album and older songs in your current set list. How did you select the songs for the set list after the release of Nostos?

C: 我们刚刚结束了2025年5月至6月在中欧地区为"Nostos"进行的宣传巡演，先后在匈牙利的布达佩斯、捷克共和国的奥斯特拉瓦以及奥地利的维也纳进行了演出。这次巡演真是令人难忘，因为这是我们时隔多年后首次进行的海外巡演，同时也是我们首次有机会现场演绎新歌。我们主要专注于新专辑，演奏了其中大部分歌曲，但我们也找到了合适的平衡，加入了一些我们的“经典”歌曲和最受喜爱的旧歌，例如"Voices"、"Nice Trip"、"Jabberwocky"和"Sirens"，仅举几例。我们可以说，目前我们的曲目列表大约有50%是来自"Nostos"的新歌，另外50%则来自我们之前的专辑。

We just came back from a promotional tour for “Nostos” in May/June 2025 across Central Europe, playing in Budapest, Hungary, Ostrava in Czech Republic and in Vienna, Austria. It was truly a blast, since it was our first tour abroad after so many years, but also because it was the very first time we could play our new songs live. We concentrated on the new album, playing most of the songs from it, but we found the right balance including some of our “classics” and most beloved older songs, such as “Voices”, “Nice Trip”, “Jabberwocky”, and “Sirens”, to mention a few. We’d say our current setlist is made of about 50% of new songs from “Nostos” and 50% from our previous albums.
