Today, Volcano Magazine connects with this Czech old-school death metal legend, and we dive straight into the soundworld of Be Fading Fast.

Hello guys, it’s great to meet you, and thank you so much for taking part in this interview. I believe this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine! To start things off, would you like to say hello to all your Chinese fans? Be Fading Fast was formed back in 2006—you’re quite a long-standing, veteran band! How did the band first come together?
Hello to all the magazine readers and fans of extreme music in China! First of all, we'd like to thank you for inviting us to this interview and giving us the opportunity to introduce Be Fading Fast to the Chinese metal scene. If we remember correctly, this really is our first interview for a Chinese magazine, and we really appreciate it.
We formed Be Fading Fast in the summer of 2006 after leaving the deathgrind band Deflorace. The original lineup consisted of Pablo and Pavel on guitars, Dodan on bass, and myself, Smeták, on drums. In the autumn, we started working intensively on our first songs while also looking for a vocalist. Eventually, Masters joined us and completed the lineup. At the end of 2007, we recorded our first promo, Spill the Hate, which was the first tangible result of our work together and also a starting point for the next chapter of the band.
Looking back, twenty years is a big part of our lives. A lot has changed over the years, but our passion for playing death metal is still there.
Currently, only Pavel and Dodan remain from the original lineup of your band; all other members have been replaced. Why did the original members leave? How did the new members join, and are you satisfied with their contributions? What changes have the new members brought to the band?
Two of us from the original lineup are still in Be Fading Fast: Dodan and myself, Pavel, although most people know me as Smeták. Masters joined us shortly after the band was formed, so we also consider him part of our earliest history.
Over the past twenty years, we've naturally been through several lineup changes. Some members left because of personal or work priorities, while others decided to follow their own musical path. Finding new musicians wasn't always easy, especially people we could get along with both musically and personally. Being in a band isn't just about playing your instrument well. You also need to be able to work together, make compromises, and have the motivation to create something as a team.
Every musician who has been part of Be Fading Fast has left their mark on the band. New members have also brought fresh ideas and slightly different perspectives on our music. At the same time, we've never tried to change our style just for the sake of it or follow current trends. The foundation of our music has remained the same, but our approach to songwriting and arrangements has gradually evolved.
Our current lineup allows us to make full use of all these experiences. Everyone brings something of their own to the band, and even though we come from different musical backgrounds, we're able to work well together and keep moving our music forward. We think you can hear that on PHOBOPHOBIA. And most importantly, we still enjoy playing together, which after twenty years might be more important than anything else.
As a veteran band, each of your members has been part of other musical projects—you are all musicians with a wealth of creative experience. Could you walk us through your creative process? I’m sure your experience will serve as an inspiration to many younger musicians! You have released your third full-length album after a gap of many years; how did the creative process for this new album unfold?
Over the years, we've learned that there's no universal formula for writing music. For us, it usually starts with a guitar riff or a musical idea that gradually develops into something more. Sometimes the different parts fall into place almost immediately, while other times we spend a lot of time finding the right tempo, transitions, or overall song structure. And sometimes, something that seemed promising at first ends up being put aside.
Of course, the way we work has also changed over the past twenty years. In the early days, we worked most things out directly in the rehearsal room, relying mainly on what we played together and could remember. Today, home recordings and sharing musical ideas make it much easier to prepare material in advance. It saves us time, but there's one thing technology can't replace. Only when we play a song together do we really know if it works.
PHOBOPHOBIA came together under rather unusual circumstances. Its development was affected by a long break in the band's activities, lineup changes, the pandemic, and health issues. So it wasn't a continuous process where we locked ourselves in the rehearsal room for a few months and came out with a finished album. We kept coming back to the material, making changes to some parts, and gradually putting the whole album together.
If we were to give younger musicians any advice, it would probably be not to be afraid to change their ideas or even throw some of them away completely. And above all, not to forget to play together. Even the best home recording doesn't necessarily mean a song will work just as well in the rehearsal room or on stage.
The production quality on all of your albums is outstanding—especially on this year’s new release. Which studio did you record at, and who was the producer? Did the recording process for the new album go smoothly?
Thanks for the compliment! The sound of our recordings has always been important to us, and with each album we've tried to take things a little further. We recorded PHOBOPHOBIA in July 2024 at Shaark Recording Studio in Bzenec, where Pavel Hlavica took care of the entire process, from recording to the final mix and mastering. We'd already worked with him in the past, so he knew our music well and understood what kind of sound we were looking for.
The recording took place over several studio sessions. We started with the drums, followed by guitars, bass, guitar solos, and finally Masters' vocals. The whole process was relaxed, without any unnecessary time pressure. We wanted to have enough time to focus on the details and not rush anything.
We took a similar approach to the mixing process. We went through several working versions, taking some time between listening sessions to come back to them with fresh ears, give our feedback, and make further adjustments together with Pavel. Occasionally, we also let a few friends listen to the recordings to get opinions from people who hadn't spent as much time with the material as we had. Altogether, we went through about four rounds of adjustments before reaching a result we were happy with.
Your band broke up twice—once in 2012 and again in 2019. What led to those breakups, and what brought the band back together?
Actually, things were a little different. We never officially broke up Be Fading Fast, although there were periods when the band wasn't active. The longest break started at the end of 2012 and was mainly related to Masters' health problems. We tried to carry on with another vocalist for a while, but it just didn't feel right, so we eventually put the band on hold.
That didn't mean we stopped playing music, though. The remaining members of Be Fading Fast formed a project called All Stars United, where we played cover songs. So we stayed involved in music and kept in touch with each other. Be Fading Fast was just on the sidelines for a while.
Towards the end of 2016, we started thinking about giving it another try. At first, we just talked about it, and eventually we got together again. Masters had recovered, and it turned out that none of us had really given up on Be Fading Fast. So in 2017, we gradually started playing together again. Things weren't completely straightforward after that either, but what mattered was that we had started creating something together again.
Then 2019 brought more lineup changes and health issues, which repeatedly slowed down our plans. At one point, Masters and I were practically the only two members left, but we decided to carry on. We gradually rebuilt the lineup and focused on preparing our third album. Later, the pandemic added another complication, so the road to PHOBOPHOBIA ended up being much longer than we had originally expected.
Your band has released albums in collaboration with labels based in the U.S. (Creates) and Poland (Mad Lion Records). I happen to know that there are many excellent labels in the Czech Republic itself—why didn’t you choose to work with a Czech label? And are you satisfied with the work these two labels have done? Your new album has only been released digitally so far—have you considered putting out a CD version? Have you reached out to any record labels yet?
First of all, just a small clarification. Cre@tes Production was actually a Czech project that we worked with in the early days of Be Fading Fast, mainly on promotion and other activities related to the band.
Our cooperation with the Polish label Mad Lion Records came about through our activities at the time, live shows, and contacts we had gradually built up. It was an opportunity to bring our music to more listeners, and we took it. It wasn't that we wanted to avoid working with Czech labels. We simply had an opportunity to work with a label in Poland at that time.
For PHOBOPHOBIA, we chose a digital release, and the album is now available on the major music and streaming platforms. We also have promo CD-R copies available for anyone interested. At the moment, we're not planning to approach any record labels or release a professionally pressed CD.
Your band’s logo has a very simple design—which, personally, is the style I like best, as it makes your band’s name very easy to remember. Who designed the logo for you? Your album artwork is also beautifully designed; who was responsible for that?
Thanks for the compliment! Our logo was designed by Dodan. It was created back in the early days of the band, and we've been using it ever since. It's simple, easy to read, and we've never had a reason to make any major changes to it.
The artwork for all our albums was created by Czech artist Roman Kýbus, who we've worked with from the very beginning. We usually come up with an idea or concept, which we then develop together, gradually working towards the final design. Roman has his own distinctive artistic style, which suits us and fits our music well. After all these years, we also know what to expect from each other, so working together feels very natural.
"War" and "grief" are the central themes of your music. Why did you choose these themes, and what do you aim to express through them? You also incorporate lyrics into your work—who writes them, and what serves as the inspiration?
War and suffering are themes that appear in our lyrics, but they're definitely not the only subjects we deal with. Our lyrics are mainly inspired by life and the world around us. They explore human weaknesses, the darker sides of society, politics, fear, and people's inner conflicts. Sometimes we also draw inspiration from horror movies or literature.
We don't see war only as an armed conflict. It can also represent the everyday struggle with problems, injustice, or our own demons. So these themes don't always have to be taken literally. We can also explore them in our lyrics from a broader perspective.
Masters writes all our lyrics. He finds inspiration in events around him, human behaviour, his own thoughts, and art that speaks to him. Sometimes he has the lyrics ready before the music is written and later adjusts them to fit the song. Other times, the lyrics come together only after the song has taken shape. Either way, he has complete freedom when it comes to writing, and we respect his way of expressing himself.
First of all, congratulations on the release of your third full-length album after all these years! Your work blends elements of old-school death metal, thrash, and hardcore, delivering a powerful sonic impact—it’s fierce, vicious, and features tight riffs, classic song structures, and brilliant guitar solos. The performances from both the drummer and the vocalist are truly outstanding. What are your own thoughts on this new material? And how does this album compare to your previous releases?
Thanks for the recognition! We always appreciate it when someone listens closely to our music and can appreciate not only the individual musicians, but also the band as a whole.
PHOBOPHOBIA is different from our previous albums in many ways. This time, we paid much more attention to the final sound of the recording. It wasn't just about the songs themselves and how we played them, but also about how well the instruments worked together, their sound, and the overall balance. That's where we see one of the biggest differences compared to GLOBAL ATTACK. Musically, the new album is also more melodic and varied, but it's still Be Fading Fast.
We were happy with the result from the very beginning, and that feeling hasn't changed. PHOBOPHOBIA is an album we enjoy coming back to and listening to ourselves. We think we managed to bring together our musical ideas and the sound we wanted to achieve. It's an album we stand behind.
As a long-established band, you’ve performed at numerous music festivals. Which ones have left a lasting impression on you, and could you describe the atmosphere at those events? Also, which music festivals are you planning to play at in 2026?
Over the past twenty years, we've played plenty of gigs we'll never forget. Like one in Poland, where a fight broke out among people in the audience during our set, and we just kept playing while it was going on. Or in Vienna, where we were surprised by an absolutely fantastic crowd and an atmosphere we still remember fondly today. And we could tell you plenty more stories like these.
For us, though, it doesn't really matter whether we're playing a big festival or a small club. Every gig matters because we're playing for the people who came to see us. Whether there are a few dozen or a few hundred people in front of the stage, we always try to give it everything we've got.
As for 2026, our live plans were affected by health issues involving one of our band members. That's why we didn't want to promise any shows in advance unless we were sure we'd be able to play them. But we hope to be back on stage soon and have more opportunities to meet our fans in person.
You have all been influenced by various bands—could you name some of your favorites?
Be Fading Fast
Each of us has slightly different musical roots and experiences. We've been through various styles, from classic rock to thrash, doom, black metal, and death metal. And of course, we don't listen to metal exclusively. This diversity also influences our own music to some extent.
If we were to name some of the bands that have influenced us or that we still enjoy listening to, the list would definitely include Slayer, Death, Morbid Angel, Vader, Deicide, Kreator, Napalm Death, and Dream Theater. And we could go on for quite a while. Each of us would come up with a slightly different list, and it's practically impossible to name every band that has influenced us in some way over the years.
Closing message to Chinese fans:
Finally, we'd like to thank you for the opportunity to introduce Be Fading Fast to Chinese metal fans. We're glad that our music is finding listeners far beyond the borders of the Czech Republic. If you've discovered us for the first time through this interview, we'd be happy if you checked out our music and let us know what you think. We'd also like to thank GlobMetal Promotions for their support in helping us reach new listeners. And who knows, maybe one day we'll even meet at a gig!
