Temple of Baal, as one of the most famous and experienced veteran Black/Death Metal bands in France, has released albums that are loved by many fans. Founded in 1998, Temple of Baal was initially formed by Amduscias alone. Drummer Herr Rikk and bassist Arkdaemon joined the band and released their first demo work in 1999. The band then released their first official album "Servants of the Beast" in 2003. If you like the Norwegian Black Metal band in the 1990s, then Temple of Baal's first album is definitely a work you cannot miss. After the band and Sargeist released a Spilt album in 2004, drummer Herr Rikk left the band and was replaced by Antares, who released their second official album "Traitors to Mankind" in 2005. Subsequently, Herr Rikk Returning to the band again, but only after releasing one Spilt album, Antares left the band again. Antares joined the band as a drummer and released their third official album "Lightslaying Rituals". At the same time, Alastor, a new guitar/singer, also joined the band. After the release of his third official album, Antares left the band and was replaced by Skvm. At the same time, his third official album "Verses of Fire" was released. In 2013, Saroth, a new guitarist, joined the band. This lineup is currently the complete lineup of the band. Since the band released two works from 2015 to 2017, there have been no new releases. Hello brother, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, right? First of all, I would like to say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. Temple of Baal was founded in 1998 and is a long-standing band with a long history. How did you first form this band?
A: 你好,中国!是的,我确实在1998年组建了这支乐队。一开始我只是做了一个个人项目。我们的想法是回归我大约在94年左右发现的Black Metal根源,受Darkthrone、Bathory早期的影响,Gorgoroth......然后,在录制完第一批曲目后,我觉得它们非常适合在舞台上演奏,于是开始寻找音乐人加入,几天后就在MKM的家(安泰俄斯,奥索斯)演出。
Hello China ! Yes indeed I formed the band in 1998. At first, Ijust did a solo project. The idea was to go back to the roots of Black Metal as I had discovered it back around 94, influenced by Darkthrone, Bathory, early Gorgoroth... Then, once I had recorded the first tracks, I thought they would really be good to play on stage, and started to look for musicians to join me, which happened a few days after, at MKM's place (Antaeus, Aosoth).
V: 你们的乐队现在只有两名第一代成员,Amduscias和Arkdaemon,其他成员已经被替换。为什么第一代成员会离开乐队?新成员是如何加入乐队的?你对新成员的工作满意吗?
Your band now only has two first generation members, Amduscias and Arkdaemon, while the other members have already been replaced. Why did the first generation members leave the band? How did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job?
A: 成员来来去去,原因各不相同。对他们中的许多人来说,是因为生活发生了变化,他们不得不远离巴黎地区,无法继续生活。有些人最终也觉得Black Metal无聊,想尝试其他风格,我完全能理解,因为我也经常遇到这种情况。当然是新的成员(目前为Saroth——吉他和Belial——鼓手)非常契合,他们都是出色的音乐家和出色的人。
Members come and go for various reasons. For many ofthem it was because their life was changing, they had to move far away from the Parisian area, and couldn't go on. Some also felt bored by Black Metal in the end and wanted to play other styles, which I can totally understand since it also happens regularly to me. Of course the new members (for the time being, Saroth – Guitars and Belial – Drums) fit perfectly and they are wonderful musicians and wonderful persons.

Each member of your band is a musician with rich creative experience. Can you introduce your creative process? I believe your creative experience will bring inspiration to more young musicians!

It's been a while since we haven't created new music. But what happens usually is that I have to be in a certain mental state, either after a big emotion, a noticeable reading, or just a meditative process. Then, I take my guitar, and let my mind flow. I record a first riff, and the others come naturally afterwards. Having a home studio, I can make demos of entire songs quite easily with all the instruments. The vocals and lyrics come after. Usually, when I'm starting to have a whole song, or a significant part ofit, I listen to it over and over again, and let it talk to me. It inspires me lyrics. And if the song is not finished, sometimes the lyrics can inspire me another riff... They feed each other. Once I have the song, I submit it in rehearsal to the band and we work together and arrange it. Sometimes Saroth comes up with a song as well, and then I just do some arrangements, or compose guitar solos and of course, write lyrics and work out vocal placements.
V: 你的每张专辑都有出色的录音效果。你们是在哪个录音室录制专辑的?哪位制作人为你制作了这张专辑?
Each of your albums has excellent recording effects. Which studio did you record your albums in? Which producer made the album for you?
A: 我们的大多数专辑都是在巴黎地区一个叫Hybreed Studio的录音室录制的,录音师名叫Andrew Guillotin。他与巴黎金属乐坛的许多乐队合作。不过我们的前两张专辑是别人录制的。第一张(Servants of the Beast)在巴黎的Frigo录音室录制,第二张则在(Traitors To Mankind)由Ludovic Tournier在里昂地区的22号Acacia大道录音室录制。Ludovic还因与Nehëmah、Crystalium等乐队合作而闻名。
Most of our albums were recorded in a studio called Hybreed Studio, in the Parisian area, by an engineer whose name is Andrew Guillotin. He works with a lot of the Metal bands of the Parisian scene. Our two first albums were recorded by other guys though. The first one (Servants of the Beast) was recorded in Frigo Studio in Paris, and the second one (Traitors To Mankind) was recorded by Ludovic Tournier in 22 Acacia Avenue Studio, in the Lyon area. Ludovic is also reknown for having worked with bands like Nehëmah, Crystalium, etc.

Your logo design is very beautiful. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artworks are designed in a unique way. Who created these album artworks for you and what inspired them?

The logo was designed by an old friend, Nicolas Favard, and then a bit re-worked by our bass player Arkdaemon. For the artworks, they are from different artists each time. The artwork of the first album was done by Erik Danielsson from Watain and MKM from Antaeusn and depicts of course Devilworship. For Traitors to Mankind, it was MKM once again, and it's an eye that symbolizes the perception of the world through our own personal reality, and our link to the beyond. Lightslaying Rituals, it was a friend called Hubert Griffe, and it was some kind of dying star. For Verses of Fire, it was AAAAA Atelier and it symbolizes a face of an ascending soul, that is partly destroyed and burnt by the process of esoteric initiation. And finally, for Mysterium, we're somehow going back to the roots, with an artwork done by David Fitt that is a pure religious artwork, but in the Left Hand Path perspective.

Satanism, Darkness, Death are the music themes of your band. Why did you choose these music themes? What do you want to express through these music themes? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?

I didn't choose them ! The expression of Temple of Baal is a need, for me. I HAVE to play this music and to write those lyrics. They are the result of my psyche, my dwelling into the Occult, and they are somehow, would I say, some kind of journal of my wanderings in the Occult. Some of them are downright simple Black Metal lyrics, on our earliest works, but as you go further into our career, of course it's easy to say « this song is about Death » « this song is about Darkness » « this song is about Satan » but there's always more than this. When I write, when I compose, I am in a different mental state. Writing and composing are to me, in this context, religious acts, like prayers. What I'm trying to achieve through music is Transcendance. By the way I still consider to be in process of perpetual initiation as my life goes. So ifI wrote lyrics in today's context for Temple of Baal, they certainly would be a bit different, because I'm learning as I go, everyday, and my spirituality today is more and more complex and richer than the Satanism I was into in the early days. I've been studying a lot of Aleister Crowley's system, I had started writing about it in Temple (for exemple on To Asteri 418 on Verses of Fire) and it's been growing on me a lot.
V: 自2017年发行Spilt专辑以来,你尚未发布任何新作品。你为何没有发布任何新作品?你是否有计划在2026年发布新作品?
Since the release of the Spilt album in 2017, you haven't released any new works. What is the reason why you haven't released any new works? Do you have any plans to release new works in 2026?
A: 嗯,我只不过需要休息一下罢了。我已达到某个阶段,再也感受不到那股激情了,我感觉自己在这个语境下已经把该说的话都说完了,因此我自然而然地停了下来,而不是强迫自己去创作一些并非完全真诚的艺术作品。此外我已创建了自己的Doom乐队("Conviction"),我需要专注于这一点吧,因为这就是我当前生活中灵感的来源。如今Temple of Baal已经诞生了我们又重新聚在一起了。目前,我们又回到了舞台上进行现场演出。我们将会看到,随着时间的推移,我们是否会从这些现场演出中获得灵感,从而创作出一张新的专辑。我不会急于求成。我必须让氛围与我对话,占据我,并开始通过我表现出来。如果真的如此,那么就会有一张新专辑问世;如果不然……事情就会保持现状。
Well, I simply needed a break. I had reached some point where I did not feel the flame anymore, I felt I had somehow said everything I had to say in this context, and so I just naturally stopped, rather than forcing myself and delivering some art that would have not been 100% sincere. Also, I had created my Doom band Conviction, and I needed to concentrate on that, cause that's where the inspiration was at this moment of my life. Now, Temple of Baal has got together again. For the moment, we are back to play live shows. We will see, as the time goes, if we get inspired from those live shows to compose a new album. I will not rush things. I have to let the atmosphere talk to me, possess me, and start manifesting through me. If it does, there will be a new album. If it doesn't... Things will stay this way.
V: 你与Oaken Shield和Agonia Records等唱片公司合作发行作品。你是如何与这些品牌建立合作关系的?你对这些品牌的工作满意吗?
You have collaborated with labels such as Oaken Shield and Agonia Records to release works. How did you establish contact with these labels for cooperation? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands?
A: 噢,事情实际上进行得相当顺利。Oaken Shield是继当时发行我们Demo版的磁带标签之后推出的。那个标签名为Chanteloup Creations。他们发行过不少作品,如果你还记得 Astrofaes、Antropolatri……的话。后来他们转型为Oaken Shield并成为Adipocere旗下的一支Black Metal分支。因此,对我们来说在Oaken Shield上发行首张专辑可谓顺理成章。之后我们转向了Agonia Records,因为Adipocere Records遭遇了财务问题,在之后的几年里无法再发行任何作品。同样,事情进行得也相当顺利。如果我没记错的话,他们听到了我们在Myspace上的宣传内容并表现出了兴趣。我想Osmose的Hervé可能曾与他们进行过交流,因为我们当时曾与Hervé进行过交谈,他也表现出了兴趣,但最终未能与我们签约。但Agonia一直都非常出色,在成长过程中给予了我们极大的帮助。我对我们的合作感到十分满意。他们很棒,工作非常出色,拥有出色的全球推广和分销网络,而且都是非常好的人。
Oh things went rather easily in fact. Oaken Shield is the following of the tape label that released our demo back then, it was called Chanteloup Creations. They released a lot of things, if you can remember Astrofaes, Antropolatri... They mutated into Oaken Shield and were the kind of Black Metal division of Adipocere. So it was pretty natural for us to release our first album on Oaken Shield. We went to Agonia Records afterwards because Adipocere Records went through money problems and couldn't release anything anymore for quite a few years. Once again, it was rather easy. If I am correct, they heard our promo on Myspace and showed interest. I think Hervé from Osmose might have discussed with them, cause we had a chat with Hervé back then who also showed interest but finally couldn't sign us. But Agonia has been really great and has helped us a lot growing. I'm 100% satisfied with our collaboration. They are great, they work very good, have a great worldwide promotion and distribution, and are fucking great guys.
V: 你的作品风格强烈且富有激情,但旋律却异常优美。吉他的音色十分完美,而鼓与贝斯之间的配合也堪称完美。此外,你作品的编排手法也相当复杂。对于自己的作品,你有何看法?
Your works are fierce and spicy, but the melody is very beautiful. The guitar tone is quite perfect, and the cooperation between drums and bass is perfect. Moreover, the arrangement of your works is very complex. What is your opinion on your own works?
A: 感谢你的话!正如许多音乐家一样,我们在涉及自己的音乐时总是持批判态度。一旦发行了一张专辑并聆听过后,总有那么一两个点会让你觉得如果当时能稍微做些改动会更好,尤其是在制作方面。但总体而言,我们感到满意。每一张专辑在某种程度上都是乐队在某一时点的音乐写照,因此理应被这样看待。至于编曲方面,在我看来利用拥有四件乐器的可能性是合乎逻辑的。你可以创作一段旋律,让每个人演奏相同的音符,这当然会非常宏大且充满活力,但同时也必须有一些时刻,比如两把吉他和一把贝斯各自演奏不同的旋律,同时当然要保持相同的氛围感。这被称为对位法,是一种源自早期音乐(中世纪晚期/文艺复兴时期)的技巧,涉及不同旋律的叠加,能够产生迷人的效果。我们有时也会这么做。音乐必须兼具动态性和静态性(在某些点保持完全一致),以及动态性(在另一些点进行旋律叠加),这样才能保持听众的注意力。这大致上就是我在这方面的理念。
Thank you for your words ! Well as many musicians we are always critical when it comes to our music. There's always, once you've released an album and listen to it, this or that point that you wish you had done a little differently, especially in the production. But we are satisfied globally. Each album is somehow an sonic photograph of the band at a certain point, so it should be seen as such. As for the arrangements, it seems logical to me to take advantage of the possibilities you have when you've got four instruments. You can write a riff on which everyone plays the same, of course, it will be massive and energic, but there has to be some moments where for example, the two guitars and the bass all play something different from each other, while being of course in the same vibe. This is called counterpoint, and is a technique that comes from early music (Late Middle Ages/Renaissance) that consists in the superposition of different melodies, and it can give mesmerizing results. So that's what we sometimes do. The music has to be dynamic, static at some points (unisson) and in movement at some others (melodic superpositions) in order to keep the listener awake. That's more or less my philosophy on this point.
V: 作为一家有着悠久历史的乐队,你们曾参加过许多音乐节。哪些音乐节给你们留下了深刻印象?能否介绍一下当时现场的氛围?你们乐队计划在 2026 年参与哪些其他音乐节呢?
As a band with a long history, you have participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? What other music festivals are your band planning to participate in in 2026?
A: 我们即将前往罗马尼亚参加Underground For The Masses音乐节,以及法国的Courts of Chaos音乐节。这两场音乐节都非常棒,我十分渴望能参与其中。的确在我们的职业生涯中,我们已参加过不少音乐会和音乐节……其中一些经历可谓相当激烈。例如我们曾前往挪威参加Inferno音乐节。当然,我们参与法国的Hellfest和Motocultor节也是难忘的时刻。但我还得提到Wolfthrone节——遗憾的是,这个音乐节如今已不复存在。那里的观众简直疯狂至极。演出结束时,我们的贝斯手Arkdaemon在处理他的背带锁时出了点问题,最终不慎撞向观众席。场面极其紧张。而我们的复出演出——在Winter Rising节上的表演——也堪称另一段极其难忘的经历。观众真的与我们同频共振,气氛十分热烈。演出结束时,一位观众与我握手,他眼中含泪,因为那种情感冲击实在难以言表……这类经历真是独一无二。唯有真正的艺术才能让你体验到这种神奇的瞬间。
We're going to play the Underground For The Masses Festival in Romania, and the Courts of Chaos Festival in France. Two killer festivals that I'm really eager to play. It's true, we've played quite a lot of concerts and festivals in our career... Some have been quite intense experiences. Going to play in Norway for the Inferno Festival for example. Of course, our participation to Hellfest and Motocultor in France were two killer moments. But I also have to point the Wolfthrone festival that doesn't exist anymore unfortunately, were the crowd was fucking wild. Our bass player Arkdaemon got a problem with his strap locks at the end of the show and finally slammed into the audience. It was fucking intense. And our come back show, at the Winter Rising Festival, was another really strong experience. The crowd was really WITH US. Vibing. At the end of the show, one guy from the crowd shook my hand and he was in tears cause the emotion was overwhelming... Such things are just so unique. Only true Art can enable you to live those kind of magic moments.
V: 你们是一支非常出色的乐队,我将始终关注并支持你们的乐队。我也希望通过这次采访,能够吸引更多中国粉丝关注并支持你们的乐队。在采访的最后你们有什么话想对中国的粉丝说吗?
You are an excellent band, and I will always pay attention to and support your band. I also hope to attract more Chinese fans to pay attention to and support your band through this interview. Do you have anything to say to Chinese fans at the end of the interview?
A: 非常非常感谢你的支持,兄弟!这种感觉真是太棒了!坚持做真实的自己,运用你的智慧,创造奇迹吧!不要盲目追随大众,做你自己的事,实现你的意愿,因为真正的幸福和真正的奖赏就存在于实现真正意愿的过程中。向中国的金属狂热者们致以问候和敬意,我们希望有朝一日能亲眼见到你们!
