In 2021, Sergio Pagnacco, the bassist from Italy's heavy metal band Vanexa, launched a fresh alternative rock project under his own name called Dr. Schafausen. It quickly caught fire thanks to its dystopian vibe. That same year, the project dropped its debut album, Waiting For Tomorrow, diving deep into themes of personal anxiety and fear—and it really struck a chord with listeners far and wide. After a four-year hiatus, the second album, Psychiatric Dark Hotel, finally hit the shelves. Building on the foundation of the first, it layers in even more intricate elements, with sharper dynamics and an overall sound that's darker and more oppressive than ever. The record pulls you into a dystopian asylum, painting a raw picture of patients grappling with waves of negative emotions and inner turmoil. So for this episode, we're thrilled to sit down with the mastermind behind it all, Sergio Pagnacco himself, for an in-depth chat.

Dr. Schafausen?

Hello Dr. Schafausen, thank you for accepting this interview. Before we start, could you briefly introduce this project? When was Dr. Schafausen founded? And why was it named Dr. Schafausen?

Hello and thank you for having me. Dr. Schafausen was born in 2020 as an alter-ego and a creative laboratory. After more than forty years in metal, I felt the need to create something that was not limited by genre, market, or expectations. I wanted a project where I could freely mix metal, electronic music, trap, djent, progressive, and cinematic sound design without asking permission. The name Dr. Schafausen represents a fictional psychiatrist who explores the darkest corners of the human mind. “Schafausen” comes from a cold, German-sounding name meant to evoke a clinical, dystopian atmosphere. He is not a real person — he is a symbol of analysis, madness, and fractured identity.

In 2025, you have just released your new album "Psychiatric Dark Hotel". So, do you think there are any differences in music between this album and your previous one? Does it have more elements or better production?

Yes, Psychiatric Dark Hotel is very different from my previous album. This time the music is more cinematic, more aggressive, and more detailed. There are more layers: orchestral textures, sound design, industrial elements, distorted electronics, and extreme vocal contrasts between clean singing, rap, screams, and growls. The production is also much more advanced. I wanted the listener to feel like they are inside a building, not just listening to songs. Every track is like a room, with its own atmosphere, paranoia, and emotional temperature.

V: "Psychiatric Dark Hotel"

Is "Psychiatric Dark Hotel" a concept album? Could you briefly introduce the story told in this album?

Yes, Psychiatric Dark Hotel is a full concept album. The story is set inside a strange hotel that is also a psychiatric hospital. Each room hosts a different patient, and each patient represents a modern mental disorder created or amplified by our digital society: social media addiction, narcissism, loneliness, hatred, fear of being invisible, and more. The main character checks into the hotel thinking he will be cured — but slowly he realizes that the hotel does not heal anyone… it feeds on their madness. By the end of the album, the listener should ask: Am I a guest… or am I already a patient?

Have you been working on this album all by yourself? Could you talk about your creative process? Although you are a seasoned metal artist, do you think there was a lot of pressure in making such an album?

I compose, arrange, and produce almost everything myself. Of course I collaborate with vocalists and engineers, but the vision and structure come from me. My creative process is very visual: I imagine scenes, characters, rooms, lights, and shadows, then I translate them into sound. Even after all these years in metal, yes — there was a lot of pressure. This album is personal and risky. It doesn’t follow trends. It isn’t easy. But true art should sometimes make people uncomfortable.

It seems that you haven't participated in any performances. Could you talk about the reason for this?

Dr. Schafausen is not a traditional band — it is a multimedia project. I don’t want to simply step on a stage and play songs. We are preparing a claustrophobic and chaotic show that will make the audience feel trapped inside the Psychiatric Dark Hotel. The idea is to create an immersive experience made of lights, projections, disturbing sounds, characters, and confined spaces, where the spectator is no longer just watching, but becomes a patient inside the system. When we go on tour, it will not be a normal concert — it will be a psychological descent into chaos.

Could you talk about the music you usually enjoy listening to? Who do you think have had a significant influence on your music?

Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Bring Me The Horizon, Hans Zimmer, Devin Townsend, Trent Reznor, Architects, ERRA, Periphery, Three Days Grace, Korn, P.O.D., Saliva。

I listen to many different things: metal, electronic music, film soundtracks, industrial, hip-hop, and experimental music. Some of the most important influences are: Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Bring Me The Horizon, Hans Zimmer, Devin Townsend, Trent Reznor, Architects, ERRA, Periphery, Three Days Grace, Korn, P.O.D., Saliva. I don’t believe in genre boundaries — only in emotion, tension, and atmosphere.

Does Dr. Schafausen have any new plans for the future? What kind of changes do you think will occur in Dr. Schafausen's next concerts?

Dr. Schafausen is not finished with the hotel. There will be more chapters, more patients, more stories. Future live shows will include visual storytelling, actors, screens, and interactive elements — something closer to dystopian theater than a standard metal gig. The audience will not just watch — they will enter the world of Dr. Schafausen.

Thank you again for accepting this interview. I really enjoy your music and hope that more and more Chinese people will come to know Dr. Schafausen. So, is there anything else you would like to say to everyone at the end?

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To all listeners in China and around the world: Dr. Schafausen is not just music — it is a mirror of what we are becoming. In the coming months, Dr. Schafausen will travel to Afghanistan to search for new inspirations, both social and meditative, in an extreme, chaotic, post-apocalyptic environment — a place where survival, silence, and destruction coexist. That is where I want to observe the human being without filters and transform all of this into new stories and new sonic visions. If you feel lost, angry, lonely, or confused in this digital age, you are not alone in the Psychiatric Dark Hotel. Welcome inside. 🩸
