The band we interviewed today is Deciduous Forest, an atmospheric black metal band from Australia. The band was formed in 2019 and released their first full-length album "Fields of Yore" in 2025. Their music is like a nightmare in the dead of night, gloomy and oppressive. The band's first album showcased Snjor's strength in atmosphere construction, perfectly presenting the unique characteristics of Deciduous Forest. On the occasion of the release of their new album, we also reached out to the band's main creator, Snjor, for an exclusive interview.

Hello, Deciduous Forest. Thank you for accepting this interview. Before we start, could you please introduce Deciduous Forest to us? When did you begin this project? And what did you want to present by Deciduous Forest?

Thank you, Deciduous Forest is a one man atmospheric band based out of Brisbane Australia. This project began in 2019 as an idea I had to record some songs I had been writing sporadically between 2014 and 2019. At first I was just writing riffs and structures without any idea specially what I would be doing. Towards the middle of 2019 I began to realise that the songs all seemed to share a common thread inspired by my surroundings. To that end the songs began to take a more direct and atmospheric tone reflective of my moods. That was when Deciduous Forest began to form as a solo project that I would work and release music under. The music is intended to represent difference aspect of human emotion and feelings. Darker feelings like regret and grief are often present in the lyrics while I try to make the melodies and atmosphere of the songs more grandiose and elaborate

This seems to be your first album. So, how long did it take you to create this album? Were there any difficulties during the process? Could you share it with us?

The main difficulty with this album was learning to write and perform keyboards and vocals. It was my first undertaking learning how to structure songs around synths as well as learning and building the vocal ability I needed to bring the songs to life the way I wanted. The entire process took several years after the songs had been demoed due to the pandemic as well as life upheaval. The actual recording started in late 2023 and was finalised towards the end of 2024.

I think the new album has grand melodies and a beautiful atmosphere. Do you like this work and what do you think of it? Is it a mature piece?

Thank you, yes I do think these songs are perhaps more mature and tackle themes different to what other bands perhaps starting young would approach. I know when I was younger my songs would perhaps have been more inline with fantasy and forests rather than themes like regret and grief. While some may balk at an atmospheric black metal band delving into such topics I find it’s a more honest and effective way to approach lyrics and lyrical themes. At least for me.

V: 在你新专辑的五首歌中，有你特别喜欢的吗？你认为这首歌最能代表Deciduous Forest的精髓吗？

Among the five songs on your new album, are there any that you particularly like? And do you think that particular song can best represent the true essence of Deciduous Forest?

S: 我觉得"Fields of Yore"是我最喜欢的一首歌，它或许是我在专辑构思逐渐成形之时所创作的第一首首完整成型的歌曲。其旋律和结构感觉非常自然，而且我在编写各个部分时所采用的将共同元素融合在一起的方式，对我创作整张专辑也产生了深远的影响。至于我是否认为这是最能代表我的作品之一，我不太确定。我觉得每个人可能都能从这张专辑中获得不同的感悟。

I think Fields of Yore is my favourite, it was perhaps the first fully formed song that I wrote when the album began to solidify itself in my head. The riffs and structure felt very natural and the way I wrote the sections to share common threads really informed how I wrote the rest of the album in full. As to whether I think it is the best representation I am unsure. I think everyone may take something difference away from this album.

V: 你对未来Deciduous Forest的发展有什么想法吗？今后你将如何着手实施这个计划？

Do you have any ideas about the future development of the Deciduous Forest? How will you proceed with implementing this plan in the future?

S: 目前我正在制作第二张专辑，我希望能在2025年底之前能弄完。我有一些Demo和关于可能第三张专辑的构想，我可能会在明年集中精力去制作它，希望能于2027年推出。我还打算未来着手筹备现场演出，以及一些商品发布会和相关周边产品，以支持这些演出（如果届时能举行的话）。这张第二张专辑在很大程度上延续并拓展了第一张专辑中较为内省的元素并且似乎更多地受到了Neofolk风格以及类似风格乐队的影响。不过，强烈的氛围和吉他元素贯穿始终。

At the moment I am working on a second album that I hope to have fully finished before the end of 2025. I have some demos and ideas for a potential third album that I will likely focus on next year to hopefully have out in 2027. I am looking at starting to work towards doing live shows in the future as well as some shirt runs and other merch to support these shows if and when they do happen. The second album expands a lot on the more introspective aspects of the first album and might seem to take more influence from neofolk and bands of that ilk. However the heavy mood and guitars are present throughout.

For you, in what state would you prefer the audience to be when listening to your music? Some people say this album is suitable for listening at night, while others say, "It's about allowing one's mind to wander to explore self-destructive tendencies, presented on the largest scale possible." So, how do you view it?

S: 我认为这将因人而异。这不是一张你会放在一个团体里作为背景音乐的专辑，我也不认为它适合夏天的下午。对我来说，当我听这张专辑时，通常不是在寒冷的深夜，就是在日出前的清晨散步。每个人都需要找到自己的心境来接受这些歌曲。

I think it will differ from person to person. It’s not an album you would put on in a group as background music nor do I think it would suit a summer afternoon, For me when I listen to this album it’s usually either late at night when it’s cold or early morning on a walk before sunrise. Each person would need to find their own frame of mind to take in the songs.

Do you think there are any bands that have had a significant influence on you or on your music creation?

I could name many but my largest influences are certainly bands like Wolves in the Throne Room, Agalloch and Empyrium. I am also a massive fan of bands like MGLA and UADA as well. I take some inspiration from other bands as well like Opeth and Dream Theatre though these are certainly not as obvious in the music and instead inform how I would approach writing some parts and what role the keyboards and guitar leads play.
