Today, we are interviewing No Mästers, a heavy/thrash metal band from Poland. This project was founded by Jan as a solo endeavor; prior to this, he had served as the guitarist for a band called The Avengers. After that group disbanded, Jan decided to strike out on his own and create music, leading to the formation of No Mästers. He is currently seeking other musicians to join the project and transform it into a full-fledged band. No Mästers recently released a self-titled album—the project's first official full-length release. Heavily influenced by the "old school" sound, the album is a standout effort featuring catchy hooks, beautiful melodies, brilliant guitar solos, and razor-sharp thrash metal intensity. It is evident that Jan has a precise command of this genre. To mark the release of the new album, we reached out to Jan for an exclusive interview.

(V: Interviewer | J: Jan)

采访对象:Jan(No Mästers乐队创始人)

Hello, Jan Bartoszewicz. It’s a pleasure to meet you, and thank you very much for taking part in this interview—I believe this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. To start things off, please say hello to all your Chinese fans. In which year was No Mästers formed, and what inspired you to start the band? Does the name "No Mästers" hold any specific meaning?

Hi! It is also my very first interview, pleasure is all mine. Greetings to all Volcano Magazine's readers! Do I have fans in China? I have no idea. No Mästers isn't really formed, technically. I'm currently looking for musicians to make this project a proper band. This project is kind of my way of coping with the breakup of a band I used to play in back in a day - The Avengers, where I played lead guitar between 2011 and 2017. We had some potential, but it wasn't meant to be, because of growing resentment and personal conflicts within the band. After we parted ways, I decided to keep working on music on my own, mostly because most of our material was mine anyway. The name No Mästers came up somewhat on its own. Until I wrote the lyrics to the song "No Masters", I had no idea what the whole thing should be called, and I tried to be ok with that. I think it's just a good name because metal has always been about rebellion. There is nothing worse than saying "oh, it's good enough, why bother changing anything"! You should always challenge the reality that surrounds you and at least try to do something better than what has been imposed upon you.

Since you are a one-man band, the creative process is much more convenient—you can write songs entirely according to your own vision. Could you tell us a bit about the making of this album?

I don't know if it's more convenient... After countless hours of trying to figure out how to do recording and mixing in a way that it doesn't sound like shit, I told myself "Never again!". Playing all the instruments (except drums) was a nightmare, because not only did I had to learn how to play bass and how to sing - I had to know how to record that! Being the stubborn cunt that I am, I kept on going. Nonetheless, it's much easier now than it has been ever before. Anyone can learn it. Other than that, between 2023 and 2025, so after all of the instrument tracks were done, but before recording the vocals, I had an absolute cunt of a year and a half. In summer 2023 my mom was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on New Year's Eve 2024; later that year my sister has also died and, on top of that, I started having crazy work hours at my day job. All of this threw me off from finishing the album, to the point where I started to think that I was never gonna make it. Only thanks to my wife and her bottomless support I was able to go back to rehearsing my vocals and then record them.

The recording quality of this album is truly impeccable. At which studio was it produced, or was it entirely a solo production of yours?

Thank you, you're very kind. I like to call that place "7A Studios", though, to my disappointment, it has never become a professional studio. The number and the letter refers to the actual home address of a guy, an old hippie, who rented us ( then, The Avengers) a rehearsal room. My former bandmates may have left, but the gear was still there, collecting dust. It was a magical place. Because it was located in the outskirts of Wroclaw, you could see a meadow and a forest through the window. Mirek, the hippie, lived with his wife in a one-story house, but he was also building another one next to it, where our room was, set up and arranged like a pro studio. He could never finish that building, because he and his wife were spending most of their home budget on beer and booze. Drinking killed him, by the way. It's a sad story - the song "Falling Man" is actually about him. Kids, drink responsibly! Lots of deaths in this interview, actually.

Your band's logo design is very simple, but that is the style I personally like best because it makes your name easy to remember—who designed the logo for you? Your album artwork is truly creative—featuring an angel or a demon plummeting from a high-rise building—who designed that piece?

Here's the story - before 1945 Wroclaw was a German city. After the end of WWII the Germans got kicked out West, because the borders changed. But they left a lot of memorabilia of all sorts. I found this font, it's called "tannenberg", in an art album about the beauty of nature in Silesia from 1940s, and I thought it would make a good band logo design. The album artwork was created by Irmina Barkowska, an excellent Polish painter - you should check out her Instagram page, it's nuts. That falling figure is actually Lucifer, cast down to Earth... from the WTC building. Why? Every person I ask has their own answer, which is what I was going for.

What is the theme of your music? Why did you choose this theme, and what do you wish to express through it? You also wrote the lyrics—what was the inspiration behind them?

在观看了Leni Riefenstahl1935年拍摄的宣传片"Triumph of the Will"之后,我创作了"No Masters"这首歌;它探讨了权力的暴力本质。"

I write about all sorts of things, mostly what I find disturbing living in today's day and age. I wrote "No Masters" after seeing Leni Riefenstahl's 1935 propaganda movie "Triumph of the Will". That song explores the violent nature of power. "Zeitgeist" is about living in the times of inverted ethics and hypocrisy, "Hellride" on the other hand, is a personal text, about one's fight with depression. That's about it - go and figure on your on, what "the author" had in mind for the rest of them! I think, that's the beauty of any song.

Your debut album has currently been released digitally; do you have any plans to release it on CD or in other formats? Have you been in touch with any record labels yet? I know there are many excellent labels in Poland.

I'm making steps towards releasing a CD, hopefully before the end of this year, which will be available on my Bandcamp. Haven't thought about adding a record label to the mix, so far. But if any of them are interested in working together, hit me up! I'm always open to new experiences.

First of all, congratulations on the release of your debut album, No Mästers, this year. The album is deeply influenced by traditional heavy metal and thrash metal, featuring fast, precise riffs, melodic passages, and brilliant guitar solos; one can really sense the care and dedication you poured into it. What are your own thoughts on the album?

Thank you once again for your kindness. But frankly, I can't stand listening to it anymore. I guess it sometimes happens when you listen to one thing hundreds of times, tweaking some details that no one, except you, will ever hear. There is a huge disadvantage of creating music alone. Sometimes you just get fixated and you have nobody to pull you out from your "dreamland" and give you some perspective. If I could do one thing differently, I'd engage at least one other musician in the creative process. But you know, we all do dumb things every now and then. I'm glad this is my "dumb thing".

Which bands have influenced you? Could you name some of the bands you like? Have you played in any other bands before?

I listen to a lot of bands and musicians, from Chuck Berry, through Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Testament, Slayer, Kyuss, to Morbid Angel, Bathory, Atheist, and Vader, to name a few of the biggest. When it comes to Polish bands my favorite one is Kat - you should check them out, they are legends. But my all time favorite is and always will be Slayer.

Every band I like leaves its part in me. Sometimes I just wake up with a cool riff in my head and when I can be sure I haven't heard that before - I take it and write a new song! I'm not going for reinventing the wheel here, but I'd rather try to play the music I love the best I can.

Apart from releasing your first album in 2026, what other new projects do you have lined up? Have you started conceptualizing your next album yet?

As I said before, I'm aiming to release "No Mästers" on CD. I'm also writing a lot of new songs. The new No Mästers album will be faster and more aggressive, but with a lot of a rock'n'roll drive. Wish me luck in completing the band and hopefully you'll hear about us soon. Thanks for having me, cheers!
