Today's interview was with the Portuguese band Bardos de Amergin, which is still a new band formed by Melkor. Folk Metal is also a style that the magazine first encountered. The name Bardos de Amergin means Amergin is a bard from Ireland, and the word Bardos refers to the bard, ancient poet, and guardian of wisdom who played a crucial role in protecting history and folklore. Therefore, this name represents a tribute to the tradition of ancient bards and the magic of words and music. The Bardos de Amergin band formed by Melkor also invited keyboardist Pedro Raimundo to join the band and released their first official album "Hinos Alco ó licos" this year. The beautiful and impressive melodies and fast, continuous riffs, combined with Pedro Raimundo's keyboard playing, make this band unique. Hello! Nice to talk to you again. Bardos de Amergin was born from my deep interest in Celtic mythology, ancient traditions, and the power of storytelling through music. I wanted to create a project that could evoke the mysticism of the past while blending folk and atmospheric elements. The name Bardos de Amergin holds significant meaning. Amergin was a legendary bard, druid, and poet of the Milesians in Irish mythology. He is known for his Song of Amergin, a powerful incantation that is said to have claimed the land of Ireland for his people. The word Bardos refers to bards, the ancient poets and keepers of wisdom who played a crucial role in preserving history and folklore. So, the name represents a tribute to the ancient bardic tradition and the magic of words and music. Additionally, when forming this band, I knew I needed a great keyboardist to add depth to the sound, and after speaking with a few musicians, I was lucky enough to collaborate with the excellent Pedro Raimundo. He contributed significantly to the album, bringing keyboard melodies and additions that I would never have thought of myself. His work elevated the music and added a special layer of atmosphere that truly shaped the final sound of the project.

Yes, Bardos de Amergin is still my creation. I compose the music, write the lyrics, and shape the overall vision of the band. However, I always value collaboration, and if the project evolves, I might bring in other musicians who share the same passion for ancient traditions and storytelling. Musically, Bardos de Amergin blends folk elements with atmospheric and ritualistic sounds, creating a journey through Celtic myths, pagan rites, and forgotten histories. The lyrics are deeply inspired by druidic poetry, nature, and the connection between the spiritual and the earthly realms. My goal is to transport the listener to a time when music was a sacred art, a bridge between worlds.

Yes, I recorded the album myself, handling all aspects of composition, instrumentation, recording, mixing, and mastering. I always strive for a high level of production, even when working alone, to ensure the music fully captures the atmosphere and depth I envision. The creative process starts with an idea, sometimes a melody, sometimes a lyrical concept rooted in mythology or ancient traditions. I then build the songs layer by layer, often starting with acoustic guitar or traditional folk elements, before adding textures like ambient sounds, percussions, and vocal harmonies. I aim to create a sound that feels both timeless and immersive, evoking the essence of bardic storytelling. Mixing and mastering are crucial steps for me. I want every instrument to breathe and contribute to the overall atmosphere, so I take my time refining the details. The final result is a polished yet organic sound that transports the listener to the mystical world of Bardos de Amergin.

As for the album artwork, I wanted something that visually captures the spirit of the music. The imagery is deeply inspired by Celtic mythology, nature, and the mysticism of forgotten lands. The artwork reflects themes of ancient wisdom, sacred places, and the interplay between light and shadow, just like the music itself. It was important for me that the visuals transport the listener into the world of Bardos de Amergin before they even hear a single note. The artwork also features bards gathered around a fire, telling ancient stories and singing their songs while they indulge in the spirits of the land. The theme of Bardos de Amergin revolves around stories told by drunken bards, where every song is a hymn dedicated to different types of alcohol. beer, whiskey, wine, and more. I chose this theme because it's a playful yet profound reflection of the role alcohol has played in ancient storytelling traditions. In Celtic culture, feasts, celebrations, and rituals often involved drinking, and it was during these moments that the bards would sing their tales and recite their poetry, sometimes more incoherently, but always with passion. Through this theme, I want to express the joyous, carefree, and sometimes rebellious side of life. The music becomes a celebration of those moments of escape, where the boundaries between reality and myth blur, and stories are told under the influence of alcohol, giving them a raw, uninhibited energy. It's not just about the drunkenness itself, but about the way it fuels the fire of creativity and storytelling, creating a space for wild, exaggerated tales that bring people together. The lyrics were inspired by this concept, each song is essentially an anthem to a different drink. I drew from the idea that alcohol, particularly in social settings, is a catalyst for story-telling, exaggeration, and even the creation of myths. These songs are about revelry, fun, and the chaotic beauty of drunken tales. It's a lighthearted approach to mythmaking, where the bards, in their drunken stupor, spin grand stories, singing praises to their favorite libations.

All of your albums have been released on your own label and this one is unsurprisingly on your solo label, how are you thinking about releasing this album? Digital only?

Yes, just like my previous albums, this one will also be released through my solo label, as I prefer to have full control over the creative and distribution processes. I’m considering both digital and physical formats for this release. The digital version will, of course, be available through all major platforms, making it easily accessible for listeners worldwide. As for the physical format, there is a proposal for one, but nothing is finalized yet. I’m exploring options and will share more details soon. It’s important for me to make the physical release something special, so I’m taking my time to ensure it aligns with the vision of the album and the experience I want to provide to fans. While I can’t confirm anything just yet, I will definitely have updates soon regarding this. Ultimately, my goal is to make the album available to as many people as possible, in the format that suits them best, whether it’s digital for convenience or physical for those who want to have a tangible piece of the music. There are several bands and musical influences that have shaped the sound of Bardos de Amergin. First and foremost, I draw inspiration from the traditional Celtic and folk music of the past. Bands like Finntroll, Eluveitie, and Ensiferum have had a significant impact on the way I approach blending folk melodies with metal. The mix of heavy riffs and melodic elements is something I’ve always admired in their work, and I’ve tried to incorporate that into Bardos de Amergin, while still keeping the unique thematic focus on storytelling and revelry. Additionally, I’d like to mention the Portuguese band Gwydion. They make excellent music that blends folk and metal elements seamlessly. Their music has always been a source of inspiration for me, especially with how they fuse these genres while staying true to the spirit of folk traditions. Of course, there are many other influences that I draw from, whether it’s from the world of classic rock, doom, or even more atmospheric genres. The key for me, however, is always the melody. It’s the melody that drives the emotion and connects the listener to the story, and it’s what I focus on the most when creating the music.

Also, I have to mention the fantastic work done by Portuguese musician Pedro Raimundo, who contributed the keyboard parts for this album. He’s not someone who has a lot of time for these kinds of side projects, but despite that, he delivered an exceptional performance on the album.
