Today's interview features Pincer Consortium, a Progressive Death/Black/Industrial Metal band from the UK. Formed in 2019 by Maciek and Pete, the band spent years creating and rehearsing before releasing their first single, “Twin Galactic Tides,” in 2022. In 2023, they released two more singles, blending the dark, icy atmosphere of Black Metal with the relentless, cold Industrial Metal rhythms, and Progressive Death melodies, offering a refreshingly new sound. Following the release of these three singles, the band caught the attention of Deformeathing Production, which released their debut album “Geminus Schism” in 2024. This album incorporates modern elements to better highlight the characteristics of Industrial Metal. Recently, the magazine conducted an exclusive interview with the band in Lanxi!

Hello, brother. Thank you very much for participating in this interview. I believe this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First, please say hello to all your Chinese fans. Pincer Consortium was formed in 2019 and is a relatively young band. How did your band come together?

Warmest greetings to your readers—may our sonic tides find new shores in their minds. The band is not old but we are. We had other bands before started Pincer. Smaller and bigger groups that churned out demos and albums, rehearsed and played gigs and tours. We had some successes and hiatuses and finally our paths led us to a party organised by our mutual friend Steve from Owlcrusher. That happened in 2018. We got to know each other and stared collaborating. Our debut, Scald "Regius I" (2021), laid the groundwork. By late 2021, Pete had crystallized the Geminus Schism concept, and by 2022, I began sculpting its sonic architecture.

Your band only has two members, which makes the creative process very convenient. Can you tell us a little about how you create your music?

Sure, I just illustrate Pete's lyrics with music. The concept comes first and all words are written before I even start making sounds. The process is challenging but produces unexpected and original results. There is a lot of thinking involved. Some trial and error as well, but mostly just visualizing the sound based on the lyrical content and making the songs flow. I usually write blocks of arrangement with all the tracks including vocals. All layers are built as the song progresses until it reaches the end and when it does then it's ready and Pete comes and records his vocal parts. Then I mix and master it. Later on I make a video for it. There is no preproduction, all parts are final because I record takes until I'm 100% happy.

Your band was formed in 2019, but you didn't release any work until 2023. What was the reason for the long delay in releasing your work?

A misperception! Scald "Regius I" occupied us from 2019–2021. Pincer proper began in 2021, and Geminus Schism demanded two years of gestation. For us, this isn’t delay—it’s necessary alchemy. Full-lengths require 2–3 years to forge properly.

V: 你们乐队的录音质量非常出色。你们是在哪家录音室录制专辑的？专辑的制作人是誰？录音过程顺利吗？

Your band's recording quality is outstanding. Which studio did you record your album in? Who was the producer for your album? Did the recording process go smoothly?

M: 感谢！我非常感激这个赞美，因为我亲自完成了所有录音和混音工作。除了Pete提供了他的 vocals 部分外，没有其他人参与专辑制作。我们在我的小录音室完成了所有录音。过程虽然顺利，但由于歌词和音乐信息量庞大，我不得不连续创作歌曲之间间隔一个月休息。这样做是为了重新激发灵感，确保每首歌都有其独特性格。

Thank you ! I really appreciate the compliment as I recorded and mixed everything myself. Apart from Pete, who provided his vocal parts there were no other people involved in making the album. We recorded everything in my little studio. The process was smooth although due to the vast scope of lyrical and musical information I had to take one month breaks between writing consecutive songs. Just to recharge the inspiration and make sure every song had its own character.

What is the theme of your music? Why did you choose this theme, and what do you want to express through it? You also wrote the lyrics. Who wrote them, and where did they get their inspiration?

“Tandemic Dispersal”

“Spectral Dyad”

“The Bi-fold Conclusion”

Pete Dempsey wrote all the lyrics. I think he was inspired by the fact that there are just two of us in the band. The lyrical theme revolves around cosmic duality, conflict, and transformation—exploring the tension between opposing forces (light/dark, creation/destruction, life/death) and their eventual reconciliation or cyclical rebirth. Duality is fundamental to existence. The lyrics depict battles between cosmic entities, internal psychological struggles, and metaphysical evolution—mirroring universal experiences. The interplay of opposites (e.g., "Alpha Omega Decay," "Twin Galactic Tides") reflects how conflict and harmony shape reality, from atomic particles to galaxies, and even the human psyche.

"Alpha Omega Decay"

This opening song embodies the unstoppable clash between creation and destruction, framed as a cosmic war. The lyrics depict mutual annihilation yet suggest that this violence is transformative—necessary for rebirth. Even in decay, there’s purpose. Conflict isn’t just chaos; it’s a catalyst for elemental change.

"Twin Galactic Tides"

A brutal celestial battle where one force consumes another. The imagery of tidal forces and cannibalistic mergers mirrors the cyclical nature of cosmic violence—galaxies collide, stars devour, yet from this, new structures emerge. The song’s aggression underscores how destruction is both an end and a beginning in the universe’s relentless recycling.

"Schizoid Rivalry"

Here, internal struggle is mythologized as a labyrinthine hunt within the mind. The "nano-demonic manifestation" represents the self at war with its own evolution, forced to integrate or perish. The cerebral battleground mirrors cosmic wars—both are inevitable, both reshape identity. The closing lines ("you are the hindbrain, we are the midbrain, I am the forebrain") signal a fractured psyche reassembling under duress.

"Double Occultation"

An eclipse becomes a metaphor for forced ceasefire—two opposing entities trapped in uneasy stasis. The lyrics reveal reluctant fascination between enemies, hinting at shared duality. Even in opposition, there’s recognition of interdependence, foreshadowing eventual unity.

"Dual Termination Shock"

A cosmic standoff where opposing forces (unstoppable force vs. immovable object) annihilate each other in futile conflict. The song questions binaries (life/death, determinism/reversibility) before concluding that neither side "wins"—they are consumed by the chaos they created. A warning against unchecked escalation.

"Tandemic Dispersal"

A funeral for cosmic entities, where dissolution isn’t an end but dispersal into new forms. The lyrics mourn lost omnipotence yet frame decay as part of a larger cycle—energy never dies, it transmutes.

"Spectral Dyad"

The remnants of past battles now haunt the void as spectral forces. Even in death, duality persists, suggesting conflict transcends physical form. The shipwreck metaphor implies unresolved struggles carry into eternity.

"The Bi-fold Conclusion"

The finale transcends conflict through geometric harmony—polyhedra folding into unity. Cosmic forces, once enemies, now merge into "combinatorial polyhedra," symbolizing higher synthesis. The song questions cyclicality yet affirms that opposition is the engine of creation.

Each track dissects duality through a different lens—war, psyche, eclipse, death — to show that conflict isn’t just destruction: it’s the friction that generates change. The album’s arc moves from annihilation to uneasy truce to spectral remnants and finally, tentative unity. The message isn’t resolution but recognition—opposites define each other, and their struggle is the pulse of existence.

V: 你的乐队与波兰唱片公司Deformeathing Production合作，发行了首张正式专辑。你是如何与这家唱片公司取得联系并展开合作的？你对这家唱片公司的合作成果是否满意？

Your band collaborated with the Polish label Deformeathing Production to release your first official album. How did you get in touch with this label to collaborate? Are you satisfied with the work of this label?

M: 我在2023年底联系了他们，询问他们是否感兴趣。几个月后他们提出在2024年9月发布，我们很乐意同意。

I reached out to them at the end od 2023 and asked if they would be interested. Several months later they offered to release it in September 2024 and we were happy to agree.

Your logo design is very simple, but this design style is my personal favorite because it makes it easy for me to remember your name. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork is also very unique. Who designed this artwork, and what does it represent?

The logo is my design, though its glyphic core was gifted by Gulash. The artwork—AI-generated electron microscopy of mitosis in fictional microorganisms—hints at cellular and cosmic division.

First of all, congratulations on the release of your band's first official album, “Geminus Schism,” in 2024. It combines the darkness of black metal, the ferocity of death metal, and the coldness of industrial metal, making your work truly unique. Maciek Pasinski not only composed all the songs but also took on the vocals, which further distinguishes your work and makes it easily recognizable as your band's. What are your thoughts on your own work?

Thank you. I am happy about the result. I always strive to raise the bar with every new release and I do think this this is the best piece of music I have written so far. Yes, it may be too difficult, too overwhelming or even overstimulating to some listeners, but this is exactly what I wanted to do. Also, if you have a closer look at the parts you will realize the music is actually quite catchy. What's challenging is the amount of text and vocals, the ever-evolving song structures. We do not really reuse parts in our compositions and even if we do, the context changes and they sound completely different.

V: 你曾经参加过现场演出吗？哪些现场演出给你留下了深刻印象？你能描述当时的氛围吗？你计划在2025年举办哪些新演出？

Have you ever attended a live performance? Which live performances left a deep impression on you? Can you describe the atmosphere at the time? What new performances do you have planned for 2025?

I think the best show I've ever seen was Strapping Young Lad at Dynamo open air in 1998 (in the Netherlands). They were my favourite band back then. they promoted their best album 'City'. The show was insane. Devin's behaviour was extremely weird and intense. I was in the first row and could not believe my eyes and ears. More recently I saw Author and Punisher in a small club in Belfast. I love his Kruller album and the sound was just massive. I am planning to go to an open air festival in Poland next month. It's Called Summer Dying Loud. Some of my friends' bands are going to play there so I am looking forward to seeing them live.

Does your band have any new projects planned for 2025? For example, composing and recording new songs or releasing a new album. Can you share any information with us?

Pete has written 50% lyrics for the new material. I guess I will start writing music soon. I still need to finish Scald "Regius II" album. we released 3 singles from it several years ago.
