As a subgenre that emerged in the late 1990s, nu-metal has consistently been one of the most prominent and closely watched branches of alternative metal. From the late 1990s through the 21st century, nu-metal bands such as Linkin Park, Korn, and Limp Bizkit have garnered countless fans worldwide by seamlessly blending metal with pop culture. Today, we’re interviewing an up-and-coming nu-metal band—What I Know Well from Italy. Unlike the aforementioned bands such as Linkin Park and Korn, our interviewees, What I Know Well,坚持 to create their music in Italian within the predominantly English-speaking nu-metal scene. This approach makes their work more direct and highly original. In July 2026, What I Know Well released their debut album, Mente//Anima (Mind//Soul). This album skillfully blends nu-metal rhythms with heavy riffs, finding a harmonious sound across different styles. Even without understanding Italian, listeners can feel the universal emotions—fear, love, anger, hope, and more—that What I Know Well aims to convey through the songs’ layered progression. Following the album’s release, the magazine reached out to What I Know Well and conducted this exclusive interview.

CIAO! Greetings to everyone in What I Know Well! First of all, thank you for agreeing to this interview with Volcano Magazine. Please start by telling us a bit about the band’s history. When was What I Know Well formed? How did the band members meet and come together to form What I Know Well?

Ciao! We are really happy to be here. Thank you so much for this interview and for everything Volcano Magazine does for the alternative music scene. Actually, What I Know Well started as a solo project called “Wikw”, which already included some of the current members of the band. The current singer and bassist met again in a venue after many years, reconnected, and decided to restart this project together. Then, in 2023, with the release of Cerbero, the project started to feel the need to become a full band rather than remain a solo project, so we made the transition. This current lineup has been together for about a year. Last year we changed our rhythm guitarist, while the other members have been part of the project since 2023. We all have different influences coming from our live experiences and personal journeys, such as playing on stages like Alcatraz in Milan or, for example, our drummer Flavio opening for Bring Me The Horizon in 2006. We all had different paths, but we have always been connected by the same musical worlds: post-hardcore, metalcore, and emo.

In your band bio, you mention that “the name ‘What I Know Well’ is a paradox.” Who came up with the name? Why did you choose “What I Know Well” as your band’s name?

W: 对于这样一个探讨内心挣扎和个人经历的私人项目来说，“What I Know Well”这个名字再合适不过了。我们都有倾诉某些事情的渴望，但与此同时，我们对自我的探索却永无止境。这正是这个名字背后悖论的由来：我们试图通过音乐来探索和理解自己，但同时也深知，自我发现是一个永无止境的过程。

“What I Know Well” felt perfect for such a personal project, one that talks about inner struggles and personal experiences. We all feel the need to talk about certain things, but at the same time, you never truly stop discovering yourself. That is where the paradox behind the name was born: we are trying to explore and understand ourselves through music, while knowing that self-discovery is an endless process.

V: 2026年7月1号，你们发行了乐队的开山之作"Mente//Anima"。这是一张让人耳目一新的新金属专辑，你们的风格很好地融合了当下最前沿的新金属与金属核并创造出了只属于WIKW的独特声音。目前为止，专辑收获的反响如何？专辑最终的呈现效果有达到你们的预期吗？

On July 1, 2026, you released your debut album, “Mente//Anima”. It’s a refreshing nu-metal album; your style seamlessly blends the cutting-edge elements of nu-metal and metalcore to create a sound that’s uniquely WIKW’s. How has the album been received so far? Did the final result meet your expectations?

W: 我们其实并没有什么具体的期望。我们的唯一目标就是确保音乐能触动人心。我们收到的最大反馈来自现场演出，在那里，观众能真正感受到音乐带来的冲击以及背后蕴含的情感。我们还注意到社交媒体上反响热烈，专辑在数字平台上的表现也相当不错，但数据并不是我们的主要关注点。对我们而言，最重要的是创作出我们发自内心百分之百喜爱、能在音乐圈中脱颖而出、并为音乐界——尤其是意大利的音乐界——带来创新与个人风格的作品。

We didn’t really have specific expectations. Our only goal was to make sure the music could reach people. The biggest feedback we receive is during live shows, where people can truly feel the impact of the music and the emotions behind it. We are also seeing a lot of activity on social media and the album is performing well on digital platforms, but numbers are not our main focus. What matters most to us is creating something that we genuinely enjoy 100%, something that can distinguish us within the scene and bring something innovative and personal to the music landscape, especially in Italy.

The whole concept actually developed in a very spontaneous way. Everything started from the need to gather these very personal songs inside a concept that could contain them without losing their meaning. Every single track represents a negative moment or something that people can experience in their own lives every day. Mente//Anima felt like the perfect connection between all these emotions, and we realized it after our singer proposed the idea during a studio session. From there, the project expanded on a cinematic and conceptual level through the ideas of the entire band, becoming what it is today. Mente//Anima revolves around the idea that every person lives with two opposing forces: the rational mind and the emotional soul. Throughout the album, these two sides constantly clash, influence one another, and try to take control, shaping the way we experience fear, love, anger, hope, and change. As we were writing the songs, we realized they all explored different aspects of the same internal conflict. Instead of treating them as separate stories, it felt natural to connect them into a single narrative where each track represents a different stage of that journey. The inspiration came from observing how often people are caught between what they think is right and what they truly feel. It’s a universal experience, and we wanted to translate that tension into music. More than telling one specific story, Mente//Anima is meant to reflect emotions that anyone can recognize in themselves.

V: 可以介绍一下你们的创作流程吗？一首歌从最初的想法到最终完成都会有哪些步骤？

Could you tell us about your song writing process? What are the steps involved in creating a song, from the initial idea to its final completion?

W: 对于这些歌曲，我们的主唱Andrea通常会先准备并创作曲目及初步制作版本。随后，我们会在录音室里共同完善、确定并打磨这些作品。例如，有些吉他部分会重新录制，有些段落会进行修改，鼓的部分则由我们的鼓手录制。我们发现这种方式更适合我们，因为它让我们能够以更随性、更自然的方式发展歌曲。

For these songs, our singer Andrea usually prepares and writes the tracks and the initial productions. Then, everything is developed, defined, and refined together in the studio. For example, some guitar parts are re-recorded, some sections are modified, and the drums are recorded by our drummer. We realized that this approach works better for us because it allows us to develop the songs in a more spontaneous and natural way.

V: 你们的所有歌词都是意大利语，在大多数新金属乐队都在用英语创作的环境下，为什么你们坚持用意大利语创作？

All of your lyrics are in Italian. Given that most Nu-metal bands write in English, why do you insist on writing in Italian?

We never saw Italian as a limitation. For us, it's actually one of the things that defines our identity. Growing up, we listened to a lot of English-speaking bands, but when we started writing our own music, we realized that the emotions we wanted to express felt more honest in our native language. Italian allows us to be more direct and nuanced, especially when dealing with personal or introspective themes. Of course, singing in Italian can make it harder to reach an international audience, but we believe that emotion comes before language. You don't always need to understand every word to connect with a song—you can still feel its intensity, its atmosphere, and its message. If someone discovers What I Know Well because of the music first and then becomes curious about the lyrics, that's even more rewarding for us.

While you were working on the album “Mente//Anima” and finalizing its sound, were there any albums or bands you particularly liked that you used as a reference for the sound?

There wasn't a single album that shaped Mente//Anima. Instead, we took inspiration from several bands that influenced us in different ways. Linkin Park were probably the biggest reference when it came to balancing emotional songwriting with heavy, modern sounds. Bring Me The Horizon inspired us with their fearless approach to blending genres and constantly pushing the boundaries of what heavy music can be. Paramore also had a significant influence, especially in the way they write memorable melodies and emotionally driven songs without sacrificing energy. That said, we never wanted to recreate any of those bands. Our goal was to take inspiration from the artists we grew up listening to while making sure every song still sounded like What I Know Well. By the end of the process, Mente//Anima became a reflection of our own identity rather than a collection of our influences.

The artwork for Mente//Anima was created by @miughost, who helped us transform the concept of the album into a visual experience. From the beginning, we didn't want the cover to be just an image representing the music. We wanted it to feel like a place, almost like the entrance to the world of Mente//Anima. The idea behind the artwork was to represent the internal conflict between the mind and the soul, creating an atmosphere that felt mysterious, emotional, and slightly unsettling. When we shared our vision with the artist, we focused more on the feelings and symbols behind the album rather than giving a strict visual direction. We talked about the duality between darkness and light, control and chaos, rationality and emotion, and the idea of a journey through different inner states. The inner sleeve and the booklet expanded that concept even further, turning the album into a complete narrative experience. Every detail was designed to make the listener feel like they are entering the world of Mente//Anima, not just listening to a collection of songs.

“Mente//Anima” was released by the Italian metal label THAMSANQA, which, as far as I know, specializes in discovering promising young bands and musicians. How did your collaboration with THAMSANQA begin? Why did you choose THAMSANQA to release your debut album?

Our collaboration with THAMSANQA started when they discovered our project and showed interest in what we were building with Mente//Anima. From the beginning, what stood out to us was their genuine enthusiasm for the album and their vision for supporting emerging artists. For us, choosing a label was not only about finding someone who could release our music, but about finding a partner who understood the identity behind the project. Mente//Anima is not just a collection of songs; it is a complete concept with its own story, visuals, and message. We wanted to work with people who believed in that vision and were willing to help us develop it rather than simply distribute the album. THAMSANQA felt like the right fit because they have a strong connection with the Italian alternative music scene and they are focused on helping new artists grow. We felt that our goals were aligned: creating something authentic, investing in the project, and bringing our music to as many listeners as possible while staying true to who we are.

V: 我在你们的Instagram主页上看到你们参加了不少演出，乐队成员们最喜欢的演出曲目是哪一首？目前为止让你们印象深刻的演出都有哪些？

I saw on your Instagram page that you’ve played quite a few shows. What’s the band members’ favorite song to perform? Which shows have left the biggest impression on you so far?

One of the things we love about Mente//Anima is that the album was created to work not only as a listening experience, but also as a live performance. Every song has its own energy, and playing them on stage is always a very physical and emotional experience, both from a vocal and instrumental point of view.

If we had to choose our favorite songs to perform, we would probably mention Eclissi, Shining, and Deus Ex. Each one brings out a different side of the band: Eclissi has a strong emotional impact, Shining is incredibly dynamic and powerful to play, while Deus Ex has an energy that really connects with the audience during a live show.

As for the shows that left the biggest impression on us, every concert has given us something different. Seeing people connect with our songs, especially with a project as personal as Mente//Anima, is always the most rewarding part. The moments where the audience sings along or reacts emotionally to the songs are the ones we remember the most.

I want to learn more about the Italian Nu-metal scene through you. In Italy, what percentage of all young metal bands play nu-metal or metalcore? Do bands often organize split shows? What is the overall atmosphere like in the Italian nu-metal scene?

The Italian alternative metal and nu-metal scene is still relatively small compared to other countries. At the moment, we are seeing a lot of growth in different areas, especially in pop punk, hyperpop, and pop projects that incorporate some heavier influences. The kind of sound we are bringing with Mente//Anima is still quite uncommon in Italy, especially when combined with Italian lyrics. There are a few very interesting projects that have explored similar directions, but it is still a niche territory that is only starting to develop. That said, we are seeing more and more new emerging artists creating their own vision and experimenting with heavier sounds. It is exciting to see that something is slowly moving and that a new generation of bands and artists is starting to build a community around this kind of music. From the audience's perspective, the scene feels very alive. Heavy music has probably never had this level of attention in Italy before: more people are discovering metal, more shows are happening, and live performances are attracting a wider audience. We believe this is a great moment for the scene, and we are happy to be part of this new wave.

V: 今年接下来的时间里，可以分享一下What I Know Well还有哪些已经确定的演出日程吗？

For the rest of this year, could you share any confirmed performance dates for What I Know Well?

For the rest of this year, we still have two confirmed dates left from our summer tour: one in Bientina (Pisa) and another one in Turin. We are also currently working on some additional shows for the autumn and winter period. Some dates are already being discussed and we hope to announce more live performances soon. Playing live is a very important part of What I Know Well, especially after releasing Mente//Anima, so we are excited to bring these songs to as many stages as possible and meet more people through our music.

What are your goals and expectations for the future of What I Know Well? What kind of band do you hope What I Know Well will become?

W: 我们的主要目标很简单，就是把“What I Know Well”继续做下去。我们希望创作能代表意大利音乐场景独特风格的音乐，带来在这里仍不常见的音色和创作方式。我们的目标是不断发展这种独特风格，成为意大利最能代表这种音乐类型的乐队之一。与此同时，我们也不愿停止尝试。对我们而言，最重要的是不断打磨我们的音乐风格，持续探索能让我们保持灵感、充满激情并始终与音乐紧密相连的新创意。"Mente//Anima"向我们展示了在忠于自我的同时融合不同音乐影响所蕴含的巨大潜力，我们希望未来的每一张专辑都能延续这一旅程：不断进化、带给人们惊喜，同时依然保持真实的自我。

Our main goal is to simply keep being What I Know Well. We want to create music that represents something different within the Italian scene, bringing a sound and an approach that are still not very common here. Our ambition is to keep developing this identity and become one of the bands that best represents this kind of music in Italy. At the same time, we don't want to stop experimenting.
