The interview today was with Adamantra, a progressive/power metal band from Finland, founded in 2003. At that time, the band's bassist Jukka had already started playing in some bands. After creating several songs in 2004, Jukka decided to form and invite other members to join the band. The first rehearsal of the band began in 2005, which is also considered the year of their founding. In 2006, the band released their first single "For Ever", and after a three-year hiatus, they released their second single "In Triumph". In the same year, the band released their first official album "Revival" on the Poison Pill label, which received widespread attention and praise after its release. This album includes Featuring a plethora of classical elements, heavy improvisational repetitions, piano melodies, high pitched singing, and choir performances. This does sound like a typical style of an avant-garde band, but its combination is very beautiful. In 2014, the band released their second official album "Act II: Silent Narratives", which also attracted a lot of attention from fans and praise from music critics. After the release of the second album, the band remained silent for ten years before releasing new works. In 2020, the band released their third official album "Act III: Pareidolia of Depravity", which still maintained a high level of creativity and production, making all Adamantra fans ecstatic. Such an excellent band is worth looking forward to. In 2025, the band released two new singles again. At the time of the release of the new singles, the magazine contacted the band's bassist Jukka. I conducted an exclusive interview!

Hello Jukka, it's nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has accepted an interview from a Chinese magazine. First of all, I would like to say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. Adamantra was founded in 2003 and is a long-standing band with a long history. Who proposed the formation of this band?

Hail to Volcano mag and all the heavy metal friends in China! Actually, this is the second time making interview to China. Last winter I was interviewed by some China mag or zine. It was a very long interview with many questions and long answers. I don’t know the name of the magazine and don’t even know if it’s been published or online yet, but after all this is not an everyday treat. Actually, our first rehearsals were in summer 2005, so you can consider that the band was founded then. Of course, I had been sketching out the idea of my own band and writing songs little by little for several years before that. In the summer of 2004, I recorded a couple of my songs and ideas for the first time on a friend's computer. The feeling was quite amazing and that's when I first realized that maybe there might be something here. At the time I was already playing in a couple of bands, but none of their music styles fit my songs even though they played metal music and very good ones naturally.

But anyway, new songs began to form, and I began to fantasize how they would sound with a real band, real singer and real studio sounds. I asked my ex-bandmates Tuomas Nieminen and Panu Kiskola to join and I knew one drummer Mikko Sepponen and asked him as well if he’d be interested. As said, first rehearsals we had in summer 2005.

Your band has always maintained its original lineup, you just changed one singer. Why did the first generation singer leave the band? How did a new singer join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job?

J: 好吧，从一开始，我们就和Tuomas（歌手）、Panu（吉他手）和Mikko（鼓手）一起走过了整个旅程。只有键盘手换了几次，但克里斯自2010年以来一直在我们的队伍中。我很高兴所有这些成员仍然在船上。在录制我们的第二张专辑时，与Tuomas有两年的休息时间，当时他不在乐队里。有三位不同的歌手，他们每人演唱并录制了"Silent Narratives"专辑中的几乎所有歌曲。在2011年至2013年的那几年里，这种歌手更迭的混乱局面确实是一段令人遗憾的经历，但不得不经历。然而可以肯定的是，Tuomas至今仍是Adamantra乐队唯一且原版的歌手。

Well, with Tuomas (singer), Panu (guitarist) and Mikko (drummer) we have travelled the whole journey since the beginning. Only the keyboard player has changed a couple of times, but Chrism has been in our force since 2010. I’m very happy that all these members are still on board. When recording our second album, there was a two-year break with Tuomas, and he was not in the band at the time. There were three different singers, each of whom sang and recorded almost all the songs to ‘Silent Narratives’ album. That vocalist circus in those couple of years between 2011-2013 was a quite unfortunate adventure which just had to be done. But it can be said that Tuomas has always been the one and only and original singer of Adamantra to this day.

As experienced musicians, you have created many classic works. Can you introduce your creative process? I believe your creative process will bring inspiration to more young musicians.

J: 好了，现在我们直接进入深水区。这些问题确实是一个有饮料的长期晚宴的主题，但我会尽量简短地回答。一般来说，作曲、歌曲创作和歌词创作都是创作过程，事后很难解释和分析。从一开始，我们在阿达曼特拉就有四位作曲家，我、图马斯、帕努和早年的前吉他手Tommi Ahtila。我独自创作了几首歌，但我真正的超能力是完成某人的单曲或即兴重复段、半首歌、合唱或未完成的歌曲等单个部分。我可以把拼图拼在一起，把不同的部分拼在一起。关于下一点，我只能为自己说话。但我相信，每首歌都有某种精神或道路，我们（作曲家）只需要帮助它朝着正确的方向前进，但仍然让它像沙上的小溪一样自由流动，找到自己的下行之路。我们总是努力按照音乐的要求写作。我们从不在歌曲上强加任何东西。例如，如果一首歌需要一个弦乐四重奏，我们将在那里加入一个弦乐四重奏。我们的哲学是，在创作过程中设定任何限制或先决条件都是不明智的。好吧，至少我们尽量不这样做。这听起来可能相当深刻和不可思议，但在最好的情况下，当我完成别人半成品的歌曲时，我觉得这些歌曲想自己完成，我只是一个手里拿着工具的信使或工人。所有的声乐旋律都自然而然地找到了自己的位置，就像是写在星星上一样。如果有的话，这可以被称为作曲家在创作音乐时的流动模式，至少对我来说是非常罕见的。当然，大多数时候作曲和写歌词只是带着压力的粗活，呵呵！让我们从新专辑中选取一首歌，名为“Morpheme”近十分钟，是这张专辑中唯一一首由我独自创作的歌曲。这首歌的创作非常轻松、自然，几乎是自己完成的。这一切都始于最初的键盘旋律，它朝着不同的方向发展，并开始了自己的生命。每一部分总是喂给下一部分，有时你不知道接下来会发生什么。在那首歌中，我没有制定规则。音乐和歌曲做出了决定，我只是按照音乐给我的命令去做。

Okay, now we're getting straight into the deep end. These questions are indeed the subject of a longer dinner party with drinks, but I will try to answer briefly. Generally speaking, composing, songwriting, and writing lyrics are all creative processes that can be difficult to explain and analyze afterwards. Since the beginning we have had four composers in Adamantra, me, Tuomas, Panu and ex-guitarist in early years, Tommi Ahtila. I have made several songs just by myself, but my real superpower is to finalize someone’s single or a punch of riff, half of a song, a single part like chorus or unfinished song. I can put together puzzles and fit the different parts together. I can only speak for myself on this next point. But I believe that each song has some kind of spirit or path which we (composers) just need to help steer it in the right direction, but still allow it to flow freely like a small stream on sand that will find its own path downward. We always strive to write on the terms of the music. We never force anything on our songs. If a song needs for example a string quartet, we will include a string quartet there. Our philosophy is that it is not wise to set any limits or prerequisites into the creative process. Well, at least we try to don’t do that. This may sound quite profound and incredible, but in the best cases, when I finish someone else’s half-finished song, I feel like these songs want to be finalized by themselves and I am just a messenger or worker with tools in my hands. All vocal melodies find their place naturally as if it was written in the stars. If anything, this can be called a composers’ flow mode when making music and at least for me it's very rare. Of course, most of the time composing and writing lyrics are just raw work with stress, heh! Let’s take a one song from the new album and it’s called “Morpheme”. Almost ten minutes boulder and the only song in this album composed just by me. The composition came about very effortlessly, naturally and almost by itself. It all started with an initial keyboard melody, that went off in different directions and took on a life of its own. Each part always fed the next and sometimes you didn't know what was going to happen next. In that song, I didn’t make the rules. Music and song made decisions, and I just followed the orders what music gave to me.

V: 你的每张专辑都有出色的录音效果。你是哪间录音室录制专辑的？是哪位制作人帮你制作专辑的？新单曲的录音过程进展顺利吗？

Each of your albums has excellent recording effects. Which studio did you record your albums in? Which producer made the album for you? Is the recording process of the new single going smoothly?

J: 录音和制作过程基本上一直保持不变。我制作了所有专辑，有时会与乐队成员一起制作部分内容，尤其是在早期阶段。三张全长专辑均由Mikko P. Mustonen混音，他还参与了部分人声录制的联合制作。此外，他为每张专辑都进行了编曲和编程。因此，他堪称乐队的第六位成员，不可或缺。芬兰克劳卡拉的D-Studio一直是我们固定的录音室。我们在那里录制了所有鼓组、贝斯吉他以及主要人声部分。Adamantra发展历程中的一个转折点是2010年，年轻天才Christian “Chrism” Pulkkinen以键盘手身份加入乐队，由此开启了所谓的“Chrism era”。键盘制作质量由此提升到新高度，这一时代至今仍在延续。这是我们的制作团队，我猜下一张专辑也将由同一团队以相同配方打造。既然是胜利之师，何必改变呢？

The recording and production process has remained pretty much the same throughout. I have produced all the albums, sometimes and some parts together with all the band members, especially in the early days. All three full length albums have been mixed by Mikko P. Mustonen and he has co-produced some vocal recordings as well. He has also done some orchestrations and programming for each album. So, he has been priceless and like sixth member of the band. And D-Studio in Klaukkala, Finland has been our home studio all the time. We have recorded there all the drums and bass guitars as well as mainly vocals. One turning point in Adamantra timeline was in 2010 when young wonder boy Christian “Chrism” Pulkkinen joined our forces as keyboardist and that’s when so called “Chrism era” started. The quality of keyboard production rose to the next level and that era continues to this day. Here is our production team and I guess the next fourth will be built with the same team and the same recipe. It's not worth changing a winning team, right?

Your logo design is very simple, but this design form is my personal favorite because I can easily remember your name. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artworks are also beautifully designed. Who designed these album artworks for you?

J: 谢谢，我也非常喜欢！Adamantra的Logo是由亨卡·J·维尔伯格为我们2006年发布的首张EP"For Ever"设计的。Villberg先生还为该EP创作了封面艺术。此后，我们所有专辑的封面艺术均由Jan “Örkki” Yrlund创作。我认为我们所有专辑的封面都与我们的音乐完美契合。

Thank you, I like it a lot as well! Adamantra logo has be designed by Henkka J. Villberg for our first EP “For Ever” released in 2006. Mr. Villberg made also cover art for that EP. After that all cover art of our albums has been made by Jan “Örkki” Yrlund. In my opinion the covers of all our albums fit our music like a glove.

V: 你们乐队在2014年发行了第二张正式专辑"Act II: Silent Narratives"后，很长一段时间都没有发布新作品，直到2024年才发行了第三张正式专辑。是什么原因让你们选择在十年后才发行新专辑？

After your band released their second official album "Act II: Silent Narratives" in 2014, they didn't release any works for a long time until 2024 when they released their third official album. What caused you to choose to release a new album ten years later?

J: 嗯，那10年的间隔绝对不在我们的计划之内。当然，我们的本意是尽快推出第三张专辑，但有时事情并不如人愿。"Silent Narratives"于2014年5月发布。此时，我们已经完成了这张第三张专辑的所有歌曲的创作和编曲。随后我们训练了一年，第一批曲目于2015年8月开始录制，也就是十年前。起初，我们迅速完成了节奏和基础部分，包括鼓、贝斯、吉他和一些键盘。然而，此时许多因素开始产生影响且并非积极的。音乐产业展现了其阴暗面。我们没有唱片公司或其他合作伙伴及财务支持。录制间隔越来越长，有时一两年都不会有任何进展。有时我甚至忘记了整张专辑的存在，怀疑它是否能完成。2020年新冠疫情的爆发成为制作专辑的转折点，突然间有了时间和动力重新思考录音过程。事情逐渐重新启动，此后收尾工作进展得相当顺利。

Well, that 10-year gap was definitely not part of our plans. The intention was of course to get the third album out sooner, but sometimes things don't go the way you want. Silent Narratives was released in May 2014. By this time, we already had all the songs for this third album composed and arranged. Then we trained for a year, and the first tracks were laying down in August 2015, ten years ago. At first, we got the rhythms and basics as drums, bass, guitars and some keyboards done quickly. However, many things began to affect at this time and not so positively. The music business showed its dark side. We didn’t have a record company or any other partnership and financial support. The breaks started getting longer and longer and sometimes a year or two could go by without anything happening in the processing of the album. Sometimes I even forgot about the existence of the whole album and wondered if it would ever be finished. The beginning of the Covid 2020 was a turning point in making the album and suddenly there was time and motivation to think about the recording process again. Little by little, things began to roll again. The finishing went pretty smoothly from then on.

V: 你们曾与Power Prog、Poison Pill和Inverse Records合作发行专辑。Inverse Records是一家对贵国音乐产业有重要贡献的优秀唱片公司，但对Power Prog和Poison Pill不太了解。能否介绍一下这两家唱片公司？这两家品牌目前已停业。我查到了相关信息。

You have collaborated with Power Prog, Poison Pill, and Inverse Records to release albums. Inverse Records is an excellent label that has contributed to your country, but I am not very familiar with Power Prog and Poison Pill. Can you introduce these two labels? These two brands are currently closed. I see their information.

Actually, our very first record company was Tunerail Records which published our first EP “For Ever” in 2006. Tunerail guys are our really good friends, but that label stopped quite soon after that. Then we got the record deal from SOF (Sound Of Finland) and its sub-label was Poison Bill. Direction of label, Epe Helenius is famous name in Finnish music business although he seems to be retired already. He started already in the 1970s and he’s like a godfather in our music scene. It was an honor to be part of his label and on his roster. Our debut album “Revival” was released in May 2009 and here in Finland album was well received, but I’m not sure if it was sold anywhere abroad. Our contract was not renewed and soon after that Mr. Helenius closed down SOF / Poison Bill and retired. Power Prog was a Germanic label founded by a local businessman in Karlsruhe and music lover Mr. Götz Morgenschweis and, as the name of the label suggests, released really good music for maybe five years between 2011-2016. He signed many good other Finnish bands too like Ragged Saints, Kenziner and my studio project Coventhrall. Unfortunately, Power Prog went bankrupt before we managed to release Coventhrall debut album Legacy of Morfuidra. And right after 2024 the album was released via Inverse Records, thanks to Mr Tarvainen! Act II: Silent Narratives was released via Power Prog in May 2014 and we started getting attention in abroad, especially the Central European market. But anyway, Mr. Morgenschweis was a very cool guy, but I got the impression that he made decisions based on emotion and heart, and not on what was financially and rationally sound. So three releases, three labels and none of them are in operation anymore. Conclusion, if you wanna ruin your business, sign Adamantra, hah! I hope Inverse continues for a long time and it seems that it has survived the Adamantra curse after releasing Act III. Our collaboration has worked really well, and I am grateful to Jaakko Tarvainen and the entire Inverse Records team.

First of all, congratulations to your band for releasing their latest single this year. The band showcases a unique avant-garde metal style and is deeply influenced by the two most representative bands in the genre: Dream Theater and Symphony X. Of course, your band has also brought their own unique style. Exquisite rhythm diversity, magical atmosphere of keyboard, from fast to slow. The epic polyphonic choir and the singer's powerful singing also add features to the work. What is your opinion on your own work? Is there any change between the new single and the old one?

J: 谢谢，非常感谢！我们今年发行了两首单曲，那些歌都很老了。我的意思是它们都很老了！就像10-15年前的“Blast From The Past。第一首单曲 “Shining Time ”是在2007-2008年乐队首张专辑“Revival”录音期间录制的，当时是作为额外材料。这首歌原本打算作为日文版的附加曲目或单曲的B面，但最终没有实现，也没有发行。因此，它在我的硬盘深处沉睡了多年。你所指的第二张单曲显然是"The Spirit of Freedom"。和前一首的故事几乎一样。这两首歌都是我在90年代末期为Adamantra创作的一首歌，通过这两首歌，我开始萌生组建自己的新乐队的想法。吉他手Panu在我们当时的 Riff 会议上制作了副歌的旋律...... 这些歌曲是我们在2005年第一次排练时演奏的。但和“Shining Time”一样，这种Power Metal风格并不适合我们正在发展的Progressive Metal方向，所以这首歌在“复兴”之前就被扔进了垃圾袋。几年后，在“Silent Narratives ”的录音前，我们想也许多准备一首歌会更好，以防万一进入日本市场。在音乐行业中，事情总是事与愿违，这首歌始终未能面世。歌词是我在录音室之前写的。两首歌都非常有趣。尤其是后一首歌，在合唱、多重贝斯独奏和奇幻主题故事等方面都非常夸张。此外，Petri Mäkilä（前 Simulacrum 乐队成员）的吉他独奏也非常精彩。我敢打赌，没有哪个乐队会在那些甚至不会出现在正式专辑中的歌曲上投入如此多的精力！再次感谢Inverse Records，让我们有机会将这些歌曲与精彩的歌词视频一起发行。虽然这些歌曲从未代表过Adamantra真正的音乐路线，但我真的很高兴它们最终得以发行。从某种意义上说，那个在卧室里用木吉他弹奏这些旋律的少年的梦想终于实现了。

Thank you thank you thank you very much! We released two singles this year and those songs are old. I mean they are very old! Like “blast from the past” -material about 10-15 years ago. First single “Shining Time” was recorded during the band’s debut album Revival sessions in 2007–2008 as extra material. It was intended to be used as a Japanese bonus track or as a B-side of a single, but never happen and never released. So, it remained dormant for years somewhere in the depths of my hard drives. The second single you are apparently referring to is The Spirit of Freedom. Almost the same story as the previous one. Both songs are the first ones I composed for Adamantra sometime in the late 90’s and with these songs I started to form the idea ofa new band of my own. Panu (guitarist) made the riff of the chorus in our riff sessions back then… These songs were first ones we played in the first rehearsals in 2005. But as with Shining Time, this power metal style didn't fit our developing prog metal direction, so this was put in the garbage bag before Revival sessions. A couple of years later, before Silent Narratives sessions, we thought that maybe one extra song would be good to be ready just in case for the Japan market. As usual in the music business, things didn’t go as planned and the song never saw the light of day. The lyrics I wrote just before the studio. Both songs were very fun to do. And especially the latter is quite over the top in terms of choirs, multiple bass solos and fantasy-themed storytelling. In addition, Petri Mäkilä (ex-Simulacrum) featuring on a great guitar solo. And I bet, no other band puts so much effort into songs that won't even end up on the actual albums! Once again, thanks to Inverse Records we had a chance to release these songs now and with the great lyric videos. Although these songs have never represented the actual musical line of Adamantra, I am really happy that they were finally released. In a way, the dream of that teenage boy who strummed these riffs on an acoustic guitar in his bedroom finally came true.

V: 作为一支优秀的老牌乐队，你们参加过很多音乐节。哪些音乐节给你们留下了深刻的印象？能否介绍一下当时的现场气氛？你们计划在 2025 年参加哪些音乐节？

As an excellent veteran band, you have participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? Which music festivals are you planning to participate in in in 2025?

Well, we have played gigs only here in Finland, not even one in abroad. But we played over 50 gigs between 2006 and 2015 from small pubs to one of the biggest metal festivals in Finland, Tuska Festival. And a couple of more festivals. One I would like to mention is Louhela Jam. A nice local festival in Western Vantaa, Finland. Just right in my neighborhood. It has been organized for over 30 years, always traditionally on the weekend after school ends and summer vacation begins. Adamantra has played there two times, 2010 and 2015. A very nice and warm feeling there is that I go there every year, even if I don't know any of the bands in advance. Actually, we just published a very rare video material from 2015 Louhela Jam gig on YouTube on Adamantra channel. You should definitely check this out! Unfortunately, touring, live shows and even festivals are not our plans at the moment. But never say never, who knows what time will show. And as we don’t do gigs, we just focus on making new music. We have now over 70 minutes of new music ready for the next album. About 12 songs of ass-kicking progressive metal. Some lyrics have been written as well. We have plans to start recording the fourth album soon. Hopefully it won’t take another ten years.
