今天采访到的是来自法国的老牌Progressive Melodic Death Metal乐队Carcariass，组建于1991年的Carcariass乐队最初由鼓手Bertrand，Pascal组建，当时鼓手Bertrand在一家法国的金属电台结实了Pascal，当时Pascal正在寻找一名鼓手组建乐队，随即Bertrand决定加入乐队吗，不久之后乐队的贝斯手Raph也加入了乐队，由于找不到主唱Raph还担任了主唱，最初乐队还有一名吉他手吗，但是在2000年去世，所以乐队一直以三个人的阵容延续Carcariass乐队，2019年Bob以节奏吉他手的身份加入乐队，2019 - 2025年期间Jerome加入乐队担任歌手，但是最终由于个人问题离开了乐队，从1997年开始乐队发行了七张正式专辑，每一张都获得了关注与好评，融合了Progressive, Melodic Death Metal和Even Traditional Metal的精髓，专辑中将经典传统主和弦与现代切分节奏、每首曲目都蕴含着惊艳吉他段落与令人叹服的吉他独奏。厚重的主和弦与狂放的吉他独奏之间持续交织的张力令人屏息。旋律时而诡谲萦绕，时而流露慵懒忧郁的质感。鼓点编排堪称另一亮点，保持律动感的同时融入了疯狂的节奏型。蕴含大量节奏与速度变化，鼓点如潮水般汹涌的冲击，与吉他和声营造的诡谲氛围形成绝妙呼应。贝斯演奏在某些段落尤为突出且变化丰富，为特定乐章增添了强烈的张力。弹跳感与复杂节奏的结合，加上狂野旋律，本应堪称绝妙，制作效果极具冲击力且颇具现代感。混音中恰到好处地保留了粗粝质感，使音乐对传Old School Death Metal属乐迷同样充满吸引力。今年乐队在法国Adipocere Records厂牌发行了他们的最新专辑“A Cold Black Day”，在新专辑发行之际杂志与乐队的鼓手Bertrand取得联系进行了一次专访！

Today we're interviewing Carcariass, a veteran French progressive melodic death metal band formed in 1991. The band was initially founded by drummer Bertrand and Pascal. Bertrand met Pascal at a French metal radio station, where Pascal was seeking a drummer to start a band. Bertrand promptly decided to join. Shortly after, bassist Raph joined the lineup. Unable to find a vocalist, Raph also took on lead vocals. The band originally included a guitarist, but he passed away in 2000. Since then, Carcariass has continued as a trio. In 2019, Bob joined as rhythm guitarist. From 2019 to 2025, Jerome served as vocalist before ultimately leaving due to personal issues. Since 1997, the band has released seven official albums, each garnering significant attention and acclaim. Their work blends the essence of Progressive, melodic death metal, and even traditional metal. Each album weaves classic traditional power chords with modern syncopated rhythms, featuring stunning guitar passages and awe-inspiring solos in every track. The relentless tension between heavy power chords and frenzied guitar solos is breathtaking. Melodies shift between hauntingly intricate and languidly melancholic textures. The drum arrangements stand out as another highlight, maintaining rhythmic drive while incorporating frenzied patterns. Rich in tempo and velocity shifts, the drumming surges like tidal waves, creating a perfect counterpoint to the eerie atmospheres woven by the guitar harmonies. The bass performance stands out in certain sections with rich variations, adding intense tension to specific movements. The combination of bouncy feel and complex rhythms, paired with wild melodies, should be sublime. The production is impactful and distinctly modern. The mix retains just the right amount of grit, making the music equally appealing to fans of Old School Death Metal. This year, the band released their latest album “A Cold Black Day” through France's Adipocere Records. To mark the album's release, the magazine connected with the band's drummer Bertrand for an exclusive interview!

Hello! Welcome Carcariass for participating this interview! Greetings to everyone in the band. Is this your first interview with metal music magazine from China?

B: 嗨，我记不清所有采访经历了，但确实，我认为这是第一次。

Hi, I can't remember all of our interviews, but YES, I think this is the first time.

V: 请先简要介绍Carcariass的成立历程。乐队成员是如何相识的？是什么促使你们决定组建Carcariass？

I'd like you to start by talking briefly about the history of Carcariass. How did all the members of the band know each other? What made you decide to form Carcariass?

B: 1990年代末，我在法国贝桑松主持金属电台节目时结识了吉他手Pascal，他正寻找鼓手组建乐队。当时我刚开始学打鼓，便决定加入。随后贝斯手Raph加入，由于找不到“稳定”的主唱，他也开始兼任主唱！乐队初期还有另一位吉他手，可惜他在2000年不幸离世。此后我们以三人编制延续Carcariass的音乐旅程多年，直到2019年节奏吉他手Bob加入。Jerome于2019至2025年间担任主唱，后因个人原因离队。

In the late 1990s, I was doing a Radio Metal show in Besançon (France), and I met Pascal, who played guitar and was looking for a drummer to start a band. I was just starting to play the drums, so I decided to join him. Then Raph (bassist) joined us, and he started singing too because we couldn't find a “stable” singer! In the beginning, there was also another guitarist, but he sadly passed away in 2000. We continued the Carcariass adventure as a three-piece for years, and then Bob joined us in 2019 as rhythm guitarist. Jerome joined the band as singer between 2019 and 2025 but left the band for personal reasons.

V: 你们近期重新混音了2016年发行的专辑"A COLD BLACK DAY"，使作品动态更丰富且听感更优质。为何决定为这张专辑重置母带？

Not too long ago you guys remastered the album “A COLD BLACK DAY”,which was released in 2016. The album has a much richer dynamic as well as a higher quality listening experience. Why did you guys decide to do a mastering reset for this album?

B: 由于该专辑发行距今已有近10年，且我们有机会提升其音质，因此决定进行重新制作。

Since the album was released almost 10 years ago and we had the opportunity to improve its sound quality, we decided to remaster it.

V: 时隔近十年重制专辑时有何感受？相较十年前的Carcariass，你认为乐队与过往最大的差异是什么？

Almost ten years later, how did you feel while remastering this album? Compared to the Carcariass from ten years ago, what do you think is the biggest difference between the band and the previous one?

B: 最初"A Cold Black Day"是以另一支金属乐队名义发行的。这是我和吉他手兼作曲家Pascal以及另外两位朋友的副业项目。但这个项目没能持续太久。与其让这张专辑在音乐长河中湮没，我们决定以CARCARIASS之名重新发行。这张专辑相比Carcariass的其他作品更偏Death Metal风格，旋律性较弱，但某些段落仍能辨识出Carcariass的独特印记。

Originally, the album “A Cold Black Day” was released under another metal band name. It was a side project with Pascal (guitarist and composer), myself, and two other friends. But this project didn't last very long. So rather than let this album disappear into musical oblivion, we decided to re-release it under the name CARCARIASS. This album is much more death metal and less melodic than Carcariass's albums, but you can still recognize Carcariass's touch in certain passages.

V: 听众既能在你们音乐中感受到纯正的Old School Death Metal，又能在某些曲目中发现非传统的独特元素。请问哪些乐队和音乐人对你们的影响最为深远？

People can hear both pure old school death metal in your music and also find unusual non-traditional elements in certain songs. I would like to know which bands and musicians have influenced your music the most?

B: CARCARIASS的根基与灵感源自三支对我们影响深远的乐队：Iron Maiden, Death,和Coroner。当然我们从未刻意模仿，但他们的音乐已然在潜移默化中塑造了我们的风格。

Carcariass' roots and influences are based on three bands that have had a big impact on us: Iron Maiden, Death, and Coroner. Of course, we never tried to copy these bands, but their music has influenced us indirectly.

V: 我想谈谈你的歌曲"No Aftermath"，其中充满氛围感的吉他即兴演奏和出色的演唱令人印象深刻。能否分享一下这首歌的创作过程？

I'd like to talk about your song ‘No Aftermath’ which has very atmospheric guitar riffs and great vocal performance. Can you please share a little bit about the songwriting process?

B: 这首歌的诠释因人而异，它能适应任何情境：战争、生存、面对骚扰时给予勇气等等。它彰显了我们每个人在遭遇侵略时展现的勇敢一面。

The interpretation of the song is unique to each person's situation, as it can be adapted to any type of situation: war, survival, giving courage in the face of harassment, etc. It highlights the courageous side of each of us when faced with aggression.

V: 你们许多歌曲和歌词都涉及战争主题。为何选择在创作中表达这个主题？

Many of your songs and lyrics have themes related to war. Why did you choose to express this theme in your compositions?

B: 大多数其他音乐流派都在谈论人际间的爱情，处理的都是非常天真的主题。而我们探讨各种议题：战争、污染、暴力——这些同样是新闻报道中的话题，也是我们关注的焦点。我们还非常喜欢科幻题材。我们的歌词正是这些元素的融合。

Most other musical styles talk about love between people and deal with very naive subjects. We talk about all kinds of subjects: war, pollution, violence—these are topics that are also in the news, and they are topics that interest us. We also really like science fiction. Our lyrics are a mix of all of these things.

V: 法国涌现过许多优秀的Death Metal乐队，你认为CARCARIASS与其他法国Death Metal乐队最大的区别是什么？

There are many great death metal bands in France, what do you think is the biggest difference between Carcariass and other death metal bands from France?

B: CARCARIASS在Death Metal与Melodic Metal间游走，大量运用器乐段落，甚至包含纯器乐曲目。我们拥有极具辨识度的风格。这种特质或许让我们不如某些乐队受欢迎，因为我们的音乐更具门槛。但我们热爱这种演奏方式，且在此领域毫无束缚。

CARCARIASS juggles between death metal and melodic metal with lots of instrumental passages and even entirely instrumental songs. We have a very particular style. This may make us less popular than some bands because we are less accessible. But we love the style we play and we have no constraints in that regard.

The second half of 2025 has begun. What are Carcariass' plans for the future?

B: 目前我们已安排了几场演出，何不趁此机会着手筹备新专辑呢？

For now, we have a few concerts planned, and why not start working on a new album.
