The band we interviewed today is Tine, founded in 2011 as a symphonic Black Death band and Murmur's personal plan. The band released their debut album 'The Forest Dreams of Black' in 2015, which received many positive reviews, and released their second album seven years later. Starting from 2022, the band will resume their activities and their music composition level will continue to improve. And in August 2025, the third album 'A Winter Horrorscape' will be released soon. This magazine also contacted the band's creators for an exclusive interview.

采访对象:Murmur(Tine乐队创始人)
Hello Murmur, thank you for accepting this interview. Tine was founded in 2011 with a long history. Could you introduce your band to us? What was the background of Tine's establishment? And how did you come up with the idea of forming such a band?
First and foremost, I want to thank you for taking the time to interview Tine to learn about the band/project. Tine was formed as a symphonic blackened death metal band with the initial intent to play as a full band, do live shows, and tour. Of course, the band has since become a 1-piece, but it may not stay that way forever! The name of the band/project has interesting origins. In English, a “tine” is a sharp fork or pronged implement which was the perfect name for the band, as the musical sound of Tine is sharp, distinct, piercing, yet cold, like wrought iron. The idea of this band is to create music that expresses my (Count Murmur) beliefs with a bit of mythology, history, and legends mixed in. Tine is my deepest and most sincere artistic expression.
There was a gap of nearly 7 years between your first and second albums. Why was there such a long interval between the releases of the two albums? Do you think your music has changed in these 7 years?
There was a lot that happened to me personally during that gap, including multiple surgeries (even a heart surgery!). I was honestly not sure I would write a new album with the way things were going. But, alas, music always calls back to me, and the writing slowly took shape even in the face of tribulation. My music is always evolving subtly, but the intent is always to stay true to Tine. Many feel the 2nd album is a bit heavier than the first album and perhaps it is, but my music has and always will be “Tine”.
Your new album "A Winter Horrorscape" will be released soon. Could you introduce this album to us? Besides, do you think creating this album was a big challenge for you?
“Winter Horrorscape” started coming together as the recording sessions were ending for “Mergae Maris Profundi”. The album is starkly different than previous Tine albums in multiple ways. This time around, session musicians were involved in the project. No programmed drums, strings, etc. Additionally, the album is much shorter than previous Tine albums at only 42 minutes. I would describe this album as punchier, to the point, and more concise than previous works. Not that previous albums meandered, but they were certainly longer. Additionally, the album has a different feel than previous albums with a colder, more biting feel all-around, but with a melodic side like falling snow. This album, like both albums before it, has a definite feel true to its name. I would say that the album was no more challenging than the previous album to produce, though, but all Tine albums have challenges when producing them. These albums are crafted in the confines of a bedroom or basement space and everything is done remotely, so there are a lot of challenges to overcome when creating albums of this breadth and scope, in this way.
How did you create songs? Could you talk about somethings that you encounter when creating songs?
Every song is different. Sometimes a melody is stuck in my head, and I record myself humming it and I come back and play it on guitar/bass. Sometimes, I jam out and come up with stuff on the fly. Sometimes, I even write parts the day of recording! Other times lyrics come first. Everything is a different process. As an example, the 2nd ½ of the intro to the new song, “A Feather from Lucifer’s Wing” was written on the spot as I was recording, but the main melody of the song was written back when Tine was just starting out! So, that song didn’t develop for many years. But, as another example, the new song, “The Scathing Blizzard” was developed from inspiration in about 1 day of writing! So, every song is different and unique in the way I write them.
Do you often listen to your previous works? For you, are your early works "incomplete" or "defective"?
I do often listen to them, and I like what I’ve done. I wish more people could hear the songs honestly, but the algorithm is the enemy these days…. The only defect I really hear with my early works is the programmed drums. However, I remedied that with this latest album. Still, there is a certain charm to those albums, and I think anyone who gives them an honest listen will agree. For me, they are complete and finished works and their “defects” give them charm and distinction.
Do you think there are any bands that have had a great influence on you? Or are there any bands you like?
Tons of bands influence me, and I love a LOT of metal out there! I listen to and love everything from Nile and Cryptopsy, to Mayhem and Immortal, to Mastodon and Blood Incantation and everything between and beyond! It all influences me in difference ways, but certain bands really hit home with me. Nile will always be a special band for me for many reasons. For one, Karl’s support of metal, the community and the fans. And, for two, the dedication to the music and staying true to the music and the fans is what Tine strives to achieve as well. I admire these things about Karl and company. A standout band for me. Honestly, I love so much metal of all sub-genres. It is all awesome. Support metal! \m/
Do you have any new plans or arrangements for 2025?
The plan is to spread the word and get as many ears to hear Tine as possible! New music is always being written, but we’ll see how quickly it takes shape. In the meantime, the plan is simply to support this latest album and to continue spreading the music of Tine across the world!
You are an excellent band, and I will continue to follow your band. So at the end of this interview, is there anything you would like to say to Chinese fans?
Thanks so much for the support! Tine exists because of my will to write music and because of the amazing fans across the world. The fans mean so much to me! The support truly means everything. No matter where in the world you reside, heavy metal is universal! Horns high! Count Murmur will always be thinking of the fans in China! Thank you!
