Today's interview is with Jumpscare, a Melodic Death Metal band from Italy, started in 2015 by drummer Graziano and has been producing original material since he was 19 years old, at the end of 2015 Graziano recruited Salvatore, Lorenzo, and Vic to join the band and get serious about their work! First of all, I would like to say hello to the fans in China. Jumpscare Band was founded in 2015. It is an old band with a long history. Who proposed to form this band at the beginning? Does the name Jumpscare mean anything?

Hello! I’d like to start by thanking you for this opportunity and for the interview! This interview with Volcano Magazine marks our first feature in China, and we are truly excited that a small-town metal band from the south of Italy has reached a magazine on the other side of the planet! We are also thrilled to have connected with fans not just in China, but also in Japan, Nepal, Taiwan, and many other Asian countries. As this is our first interview with a Chinese magazine, we’d like to extend a warm greeting to all the Chinese metalheads and fans—we hope to meet you in person one day! Thank you for your support; we are genuinely grateful! Jumpscare was founded by me in late 2015, around November. I’m not sure if we’d consider ourselves an "old" band, especially given that we view the years from 2020 to 2023 as somewhat strange, since we accomplished very little during the pandemic. Nevertheless, our passion for music drives us to continue, regardless of our history. It’s all about sharing memories, creating art, and striving to achieve our childhood dreams. The band started composing original music shortly after I turned 19. Initially, we played just for the fun of it, but eventually, I realized we needed to be serious. I made a pivotal decision: “Either we take this seriously, or we disband the whole project, because we are not kids anymore.” This decision stemmed from my experience with previous high school music projects—both covers and originals—that either broke up or went on permanent hiatus, which nearly extinguished my desire to play drums. However, a spark reignited when I rediscovered an old band I loved since day one: Sepultura. At the end of 2015, I recruited my brother Salvatore, who played bass and had been with me in past projects, along with our former members (and lifelong friends) Lorenzo and Vic. We decided to create music influenced by Sepultura's Roots era, blending groove and alternative metal, despite having only one guitarist and vocals reminiscent of Chester Bennington's style. The name Jumpscare was chosen for three main reasons. First, it draws inspiration from the cinematic technique of the "jumpscare," known for its sudden impact and ability to evoke strong emotional reactions, which reflects our intention to create intense and unexpected emotions in our music. Second, it has a psychological aspect, as jumpscares play on anticipation, fear, and curiosity—elements we explore emotionally in our compositions. Lastly, there's a touch of irony related to an amusing incident during our early performances, involving our former singer—who was notoriously "monstrously" late—leading to an inside joke. This blend of humor and seriousness ultimately guided our choice of name. We also discovered that nobody else was using this name, aside from an electronic artist, making it a perfect fit for a metal band from southern Italy.

Now only you and your brother Salvatore are the first generation members of the band. The other members have been replaced. Why did the first generation members quit the band? How do new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the work of the new members?

WWhen I started the band at the end of 2015, we already had a solid lineup by 2016. Andrea joined as the second guitarist in 2017, and we only changed singers in 2018. Our other guitarist left in 2021. Despite these lineup changes, we have always remained a close group of friends. Lorenzo, our former singer, decided to stop making music, while Vic, our first guitarist, got married and relocated to Germany. For us, it’s about more than just the music; it’s something much deeper. We prioritize building strong friendships because we are all living the same dream and sharing this journey together. The relationships among the members of Jumpscare strike a perfect balance between professionalism and camaraderie. Despite our high level of skill and commitment to our music, we maintain a dynamic of mutual support that is crucial to our success and cohesion as a band.

Every member of your band is an experienced musician who creates extreme metals. Can you tell us something about your creative process? I believe your creative experience will inspire many young musicians. Are you currently creating a new album? How is the new album going?

As a highly professional group (or at least we strive to be!), the members of Jumpscare are deeply committed to crafting and performing our music. Each member contributes unique technical and artistic skills, resulting in a well-polished sound and a powerful stage presence. We take every aspect of the musical process seriously, from songwriting and recording to production and live performance. Currently, we are in the process of finalizing our second album. So far, we have released our first single, "Rise And Fall," which is available on all major streaming and digital distribution platforms. Jumpscare can be described in one word: intense. We aim to merge technical, complex instrumental sections with emotional passages and epic atmospheres, creating an immersive sonic experience. This word captures the essence of our music perfectly. Our songs explore deep themes, often related to psychology, inner darkness, and existential struggles, reflecting the emotional intensity that defines our musical style. Our creative process is collaborative; we all contribute to the composition. We start with an idea and build upon it together, placing the act of creating music at the heart of our work. We play not only with sounds but also with colors, emotions, and feelings, allowing our music to resonate on multiple levels.

Every album in your band is well recorded. In which studio did you record the album? Who made this album for you?

Thank you for your feedback! To date, we have released one full-length album, "Don't Close Your Eyes," along with several EPs, demos, splits, and live EPs that represent our evolution as a band. Each release captures our growth and the musical journey we’ve experienced. Our debut album was recorded at Sonitus Studio with Tommaso Monticelli , that helped us achieve the sound we envisioned. Their professional environment allowed us to focus on our creativity and technical precision. Currently, we are in the process of finalizing our second album that was recorded and produced between three studios: Oue own studio (headquarters of our association and band) called Vault Lab Recordings, were we produce also other local bands and friends, there we did all the drums,bass and programming. The guitars and the vocals were produced at SDM Recording Studio with Seb Di Martino (DJ of the hip hop groups Moscow Death Brigade and guitarist of the thrashcore Siberain Meat Grinder) while the mixing, mastering were made at Divergent Studios with Simone Pietroforte, who has collaborated with several notable bands and labels in the metal scene, including Within Destruction, As Blood Runs Black, and Distant. His extensive experience and guidance are instrumental in shaping our new sound. As we move forward, we continue to prioritize high-quality production to ensure that our music reflects our dedication and passion. We are excited to share this new material with our listeners and showcase our continued evolution as a band.

We appreciate your interest in our visual identity! Over the years, Jumpscare has had two distinct logos. The first logo was crafted by Valerio of Heilege Art, who captured the raw essence of our music while ensuring it was versatile and impactful across various platforms.Our second logo was designed by MusumiArt, which is the creative name of Lina Mussolino, the sister of our former guitarist. Lina also designed the artwork for our debut album, "Don't Close Your Eyes." Her abstract designs reflect the deep psychological themes we explore in our music, creating a strong visual narrative that aligns perfectly with our sound. For our single "Rise and Fall," the artwork was designed by Axel Perugino, who brought a fresh perspective to our visuals. Additionally, both Andrea, our current guitarist, and I, Graziano, have contributed to various graphic designs, layouts, and social media content. We believe that collaboration is key, and each piece of art associated with Jumpscare plays an integral role in enhancing the overall experience for our audience. Your albums are all released under the label of Vault Lab Recordings. I know you created this label. Is it convenient for you to release your band's albums by creating this label? How is the brand operation at present? Your first official album in 2019 is very classic, and you focus on melodic death, mainly the influence of metalcore, deathcore and symphony! Unlike the biography of old school death metal, this album incorporates many modern elements. This album includes sharp guitar tracks, accurate drums and heavy bass lines, which blend well with the singer's voice. What do you think of your work? Is there any change between the new album and the old one?

Thank you for your kind words about our latest single! We’re excited about our new album, and I appreciate the recognition of our journey. Creating Vault Lab Recordings was a strategic decision for us. It allows us to maintain full creative control over our music while providing us with the necessary infrastructure to release our albums on our own terms. By having our label, we can experiment with our sound without the constraints that sometimes come with larger labels. This autonomy has been crucial, especially as we blend various influences like melodic death metal, metalcore, and symphonic elements. Our debut album, "Don't Close Your Eyes," emerged from a period of experimentation, transitioning from our earlier EPs, which had a more alternative sound. This evolution reflects our desire to explore new musical territories while retaining the core of our identity. The album showcased our early exploration of melodic death metal, incorporating sharp guitar riffs, precise drumming, and heavy bass lines that complemented our vocalist's style. Currently, Vault Lab Recordings is operating effectively, allowing us to manage not just our album releases but also distribution, promotion, and merchandise. We are indeed planning to release our new album under Vault Lab Recordings, as we believe this aligns with our artistic vision and goals for the project. However, we remain open to exploring other record deals. Having experienced some challenges in the past, we prioritize working with partners who genuinely care about us and our music. At the moment, we are actively seeking a reliable booking agency to help us streamline our live performances and expand our reach in the metal scene. Collaborating with a dedicated agency will allow us to focus more on our music while ensuring we have the best opportunities for shows and festivals. Currently, we are working with various partners in the industry, which has opened doors for us to participate in different festivals. We are in the final stages of organizing our involvement in several upcoming events, although we don’t have confirmed details just yet. We’re excited about the potential to connect with fans and other artists, and we believe that participating in these festivals will play a crucial role in our growth as a band.
