巫术、噩梦、奇幻 - 英国Heavy Metal乐队Electric Banshee专访

崛起于伦敦的新锐乐队Electric Banshee，有着出色的器乐编配、空灵抓耳的旋律线条，以及巫术、超自然异象与宇宙恐怖的歌曲主题，吸引了一批乐迷。乐队携首张EP"Spiritual Overdrive"闯入大众视野，将独特且富有魅力的新作展示给大家，近期火山杂志联系到了乐队并进行了一次专访！

Emerging as a promising new act out of London, Electric Banshee has drawn a dedicated fanbase with its outstanding instrumental arrangements, ethereal and catchy melodic lines, and lyrical themes of witchcraft, supernatural omens and cosmic horror. The band stepped into the spotlight with their debut EP Spiritual Overdrive, presenting their distinctive and compelling new work to audiences. Recently, Volcano Magazine reached out to the band for an exclusive interview

What was the turning point that made you decide to form Electric Banshee? Where did the inspiration for the band name “Electric Banshee” come from?

J: 很多事情都激发了我创作这个项目的灵感，而且它真的需要尽快实现……我决定组建 Electric Banshee，是因为我想从艺术的角度表达很多方面，而最准确、最真诚的方式就是通过这支乐队创作音乐。此外，我认为金属乐是一个非常丰富的音乐类型，拥有无限的探索空间，但它常常被乐队（以及媒体）给自己贴上的标签所限制（鞭击金属、黑金属、死亡金属、前卫金属等等）。所以，保持开放的心态总是有益的。除此之外，我还想尽可能地向更多的人推广金属乐，因为在我看来，金属乐仍然主要属于金属乐迷，而不是大众。从这个角度来看，我认为自己是一个反守门人。在爱尔兰民间传说中，女妖是死亡的使者，所以我觉得这个名字听起来很金属！而且这个名字正好是空着的，所以我决定用它。另一个原因是，吉他发出的声音也很像女妖的叫声，毕竟女妖就是用凄厉的尖叫来传递信息的。所以可以说，真正的“电女妖”指的是乐队里演奏的吉他。

So many things inspired me to create this project, and it really needed to happen asap...I decided to form Electric Banshee because there are so many aspects I would like to express from an artistic point of view, and the most accurate and honest way to do it is by creating music with this band. Also, I think that metal music is such a rich genre with so many possibilities to be explored but it is very often limited to the labels that the bands (and the media) give to themselves (thrash, black, death, prog, etc.). So, a bit of an open mind wouldn't hurt. On top of that, I would like to promote metal music to as many people as possible, because from my point of view, it still feels like metal belongs mainly to metalheads, and not the people in general. From that perspective, I would consider myself an anti-gatekeeper. Banshees are messengers of death in the irish folklore, so to me that sounded quite metal! Besides that, the name was free, so I decided to use it. Another reason for the name is that the sound that the guitar produces can also be very banshee-esque, considering that banshees bring their messages by screaming in a scary and mournful way. So you could say that the actual Electric Banshees are the guitars played in the band.

V: 你们日常喜欢听哪些风格的音乐？有哪些乐队或者音乐人对你们产生了深刻的影响？

What styles of music do you enjoy listening to in your daily life? Which bands or musicians have had a profound influence on you?

J: 我听的音乐类型很广泛，但我觉得大部分都和摇滚乐有关。我最喜欢的乐队包括The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan等经典乐队。我也很喜欢朋克摇滚，是Ramones乐队和Dead Kennedys乐队的铁杆粉丝。我尤其欣赏那些不拘一格的艺术家，比如Frank Zappa, Mike Patton和Captain Beefhart。但对我影响最大的还是金属乐队。举几个例子来说，我深受Black Sabbath和Venom乐队营造的黑暗氛围的影响；还有像Slayer和Motorhead乐队那样速度极快的风格，如果速度之上再加入一些优美的旋律和精湛的技巧，那就成了像麦加帝斯、卡卡斯和遗嘱乐队这样的作品，它们对我的影响非常深远。我也很喜欢一些比较现代的乐队，比如Power Trip、Galneryus、Fulci、Vektor、Gutalax、Hazzerd和Witch Satan Club等等。它们都超级棒，如果你还没听过的话，一定要听听。

I listen different kinds of music, but I think most of them are related to rock music. Among my all-time favorites are classics such as The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan. I also love punk rock music, being a massive fan of the Ramones and the Dead Kennedys. I'm a big fan of artists who think outside the box, such as Frank Zappa, Mike Patton or Captain Beefhart. But the most profound influence comes from metal bands, to mention a few of them, I was really influenced by the dark atmospheres that Black Sabbath or Venom brought into the music scene; the speed that bands like Slayer or Motorhead achieved, and if on top of the speed, you add some great melody and technicality, you have bands like Megadeth, Carcass or Testament, which are a heavy inspiration for me. I also enjoy a lot more modern bands like Power trip, Galneryus, Fulci, Vektor, Gutalax, Hazzerd or Witch Satan Club, to mention some of them. All of them are super cool, have a listen if you haven't.

V: 你们的音乐在厚重的同时拥有优秀的旋律线，你们的歌曲创作过程是什么样的？

Your music delivers heavy weight alongside strong melodic lines. What does your song‑writing process look like?

J: 通常，一切都始于一两个即兴片段，它们就像种子一样，最终会发展成一首完整的歌曲。但为了最终完成整首歌，这些片段必须非常出色，因为它们会被反复使用。即使歌曲是纯器乐的，就像这张EP一样，也必须有一个主题或想法来激发歌曲的创作，这样创作过程才会更加流畅。我认为最耗时的部分是在歌曲完全写好之后，因为我喜欢让编曲（吉他乐句、独奏、合成器）既有趣又引人入胜。我经常会创作出一些东西，然后觉得它还可以做得更好。但最终，我总是对最终的版本感到满意。

Normally everything starts with one or a few riffs that work like a seed that will develop into a full song. But in order to make it to the song, the riff has to be really good, since it will be repeated many times. Even if the songs are instrumental, like its the case for this EP, there must be an idea o theme that inspires the development of the song, then the writing just flows easier. I think that the most time-consuming part comes after the song is fully written, because I like to make the arrangements (guitar licks, solos, synths) to be interesting and engaging, and it happens often that I create something, and then I think that it could have been done differently. But at the end I'm always satisfied with the final take.

V: EP名字"Spiritual Overdrive"如何理解？这个标题想传递什么概念？

How would you interpret the EP title Spiritual Overdrive? What concept do you intend to convey with this title?

J: 我喜欢这个名字的发音，“Spiritual Overdrive”本身并不一定有什么特定的含义，但由于乐队的主题在某种程度上与巫术和神秘主义有关，感觉这个名字可以将歌曲中不同的理念融合在一起，表达乐队的精神。

I like how it sounds, Spiritual Overdrive doesn't necessarily mean something in particular, but since the themes of the band are related to witchcraft and mysticism to some extent, it feels like something like that could bring together the different ideas of the songs and express the spirit of the band.

V: “Spiritual Overdrive”这个概念，是偏向于超自然幻想，还是映射某些现实精神困境？

Is the concept of “Spiritual Overdrive” more leaning towards supernatural fantasy, or does it reflect certain real‑world mental struggles?

J: 我非常喜欢那些含义模糊的概念或想法，而你向我提出这个问题，让我觉得这张EP的标题正是为了达到这个目的。在这种情况下，我认为无论你觉得它意味着什么，那就是正确的答案。

I really like when concepts or ideas are ambiguous, and the fact that you're making me this question, makes me think that that aim was achieved with the title of this EP. In this case, I would say that whatever you feel it means to you, then that's the right answer.

V: 你们歌词大量使用巫术、噩梦、宇宙恐怖的题材，是什么吸引你们聚焦这类黑暗奇幻主题？你们会喜欢同类型文学作品或者影视作品吗？

Your lyrics draw heavily on themes of witchcraft, nightmares and cosmic horror. What draws you to these dark‑fantasy subjects? Do you enjoy literature or films of the same genre?

J: 即使这张EP中的所有音乐都是纯器乐演奏，我的创作灵感也深受黑暗艺术的影响。我发现所有能够表达人性阴暗面的艺术形式都很有趣，而恐怖艺术尤其擅长以非常有效的方式做到这一点。在这张EP中，你可以找到一些与宇宙恐怖相关的曲目，例如"De Vermis Mysteriis"，这是一本克苏鲁神话中提到的魔法书（巫术之书），用于召唤强大的外星实体。"Galactic Funeral"也是一首与宇宙恐怖相关的曲目，它描绘了一个星系的毁灭，主题从最初的平和宁静逐渐演变为彻底的疯狂和毁灭。在我看来，"Nightmare"这首歌听起来就像一场噩梦，但器乐演奏的妙处就在于，如果你觉得它听起来像其他的东西，那也是正确的答案。我主要受文学作品的影响，我一直很喜欢描写黑暗主题的作家的作品，例如H·P·洛夫克拉夫特、亚瑟·梅琴、埃德加·爱伦·坡、斯蒂芬·金、斯坦尼斯瓦夫·莱姆、科曼·麦卡锡等等。

Even if all the music on this EP is purely instrumental, I was heavily inspired by dark art. I find interesting all forms of art that express the dark side of human nature, and horror art in general is something that achieves that in a very effective way. On this EP, you can find cosmic horror-related titles, like "De Vermis Mysteriis", which is a grimoire (book of witchcraft) mentioned in the Cthulhu Mythos, used to summon powerful extra-terrestrial entities. Galactic Funeral is also some sort of cosmic horror-related title, it evokes the destruction of a galaxy, it goes from peace and calmness at the begining of the theme, and evolves into total madness and destruction. The song Nightmare sounds like a nightmare would sound from my perspective, but the nice thing about instrumental music is that if you feel like it sounds like something else to your ears, then that's also the right answer. I'm mostly influenced by literature, I've always enjoyed the work of writers that write about dark themes, such as HP Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King, Stanislaw Lem, Corman McCarthy, to mention some.

V: 你们音乐充满高能量，在现场演出，你们最希望带给观众怎样的体验？

Your music is full of high energy. What kind of experience do you hope to bring to the audience during live shows?

J: 我希望我的音乐能成为一段旅程。没错，我们的音乐充满能量，但其中也蕴含着一些微妙之处，我希望听众能够体会到。我最喜欢的例子之一是"Galactic Funeral"，它以某种萨满式的体验开场，随后弥漫着悲剧的气息，并逐渐走向高潮，最终演变成一段疯狂的激流金属主题，以纯粹的混乱收尾。另一个例子是"De Vermis Mysteriis"，它以黑暗而强大的主题开场，最终以梦幻般的怀旧体验收尾，回响/滑音吉他和一些合唱编排，仿佛是堕落天使的吟唱。

I want my music to be a journey, its correct that our music is full of energy, but there are some nuances on it that I hope can be appreciated by the audience. One of my favorite examples is Galactic Funeral, that starts like some sort of shamanic exprience, followed by a feeling of tragedy and it goes in crescendo evolving like a crazy thrash metal theme that ends in pure chaos. Another example is De Vermis Mysteriis, which starts like a dark-powerful theme to end up as a dreamy, nostalgic experience at the end with the echoed / slide guitars and some choral arrangements, it feels like if they are sung by some fallen angels.

V: 乐队下一步的创作会侧重哪种主题？还有哪些主题是你们感兴趣，未来有可能进行涉足的？

What themes will your next creations focus on? Are there any other themes you are interested in exploring in the future?

J: Electric Banshee最棒的地方之一就是我们未来想要探索的各种主题和风格，同时又会保持乐队的特色。首张EP是纯器乐作品，所以我们计划继续创作这类歌曲，同时也会推出一些带有歌词的歌曲，探讨与恐怖相关的更深层次主题。目前我们正在创作一首关于一个遭受酷刑后给人类带来混乱的超自然实体的歌曲，非常精彩，计划很快作为单曲发行，敬请期待！

Definitely one of nicest things about Electric Banshee is the different themes and styles we are aiming to explore in the future, while keeping the identity of the band. Since this first EP was purely instrumental, the plan is to keep making more of that kind of songs, but also introducing some songs with lyrics that explore deeper themes related to horror. Right now we're working on a song about a supernatural entity that brings chaos to the population after being tortured, really cool stuff, that is planned to be released as a single soon, stay tuned!

V: 你们对魔法和巫术的看法是什么？

What are your thoughts on magic and witchcraft?

J: 对我来说，创作与这些主题相关的音乐很容易，因为我不相信魔法或巫术。所以，举个例子，如果我创作历史题材的音乐，我会觉得有必要做到历史准确，这会拖慢创作进度。但如果是恐怖题材，我可以创造一个拥有自己虚构规则的世界，这基本上也是宗教的运作方式，不过那是另一个故事了…

To me is easy to make music related to those topics because I don't believe in magic or witchcraft. So, for example, if I wrote music related to history, I would feel the need to be historically accurate, and that would slow down the process of making music. But with horror, I can just create a world with my own fictional rules, which is basically how religion is structured, but that's another story...

V: 你们当地的金属乐氛围如何？可以向读者介绍介绍吗？

How is the metal scene in your local area? Could you introduce it to our readers?

J: 我住在伦敦，所以我觉得这里的金属乐氛围非常浓厚。卡姆登尤其适合金属乐迷，那里经常举办各种演出，既有地下乐队，也有大牌乐队。所以，伦敦绝对是金属乐爱好者的天堂。

I'm based in London, so I would say is a very rich scene for the metal community. Camden is specially a nice place for metalheads, many concerts happening there, underground bands giving concerts, also big bands. So definitely a great place for metal.
