恐怖的重金属音乐故事 - 意大利Melodic Death Metal乐队FearyTales专访

今天采访到的是来自意大利的Melodic Death Metal乐队FearyTales，组建于2006年的FearyTales乐队是意大利一支经典的老牌乐队，在组建之后乐队经过长时间的创作在2008年发行了第一张Demo作品，这张专辑发行之后便吸引了大量意大利本土歌迷的关注，精彩的编曲，悦耳的旋律，令人难忘的Solo，2016年乐队自己发行了第一张正式专辑“Acustica - Live in Studio”，这张专辑发行之后便成为了意大利最炙手可热的乐队之一，也成为了意大利音乐节邀请的对象，2019年意大利的Buil2Kill Records厂牌与乐队签约发行了EP专辑“FearyTales”，2022乐队发行了第二张正式专辑“MMXXII”在经过前几张专辑的利息之后，乐队也更加的成熟，稳重，2024年乐队发行了第三张正式专辑“Vento divino”，新专辑发行之际乐队的歌手Marco Chiariglione与杂志取得联系进行了一次专访！

Today's interview is with Italian Melodic Death Metal band FearyTales. Formed in 2006, FearyTales is one of Italy's classic veteran bands, and after a long period of creativity, the band released their first demo in 2008, which attracted a lot of attention from their local fans. Hello Mr Chiariglione, nice to meet you and thank you very much for taking part in this interview. I think this is the first time FearyTales is interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, hello to all Chinese music fans. Could you briefly introduce FearyTales? How did the band start? How did the band members meet?

Pleased to meet you Zhou. Thank you very much for the great opportunity you gave me to hail Chinese metalheads! This is our first interview at all for a Chinese magazine, and I am very honored. Well, FearyTales – from Turin, Italy – are a odd kind of heavy band: our Feary-Metal is a mixture of classic metal and some extreme music influences, enveloping clean and growl vocals, great and inspired guitar solos and riffs, powerful bass and drums. Band activity started many years ago, something like around 2008, recording a few demos (“Promo” and “Acustica”) and taking part to some compilations (like “Music Against Itself .2-.3” and “Extreme Music Aggression .1”). I am the ‘lone survival’ of the first lineup. Ten years after FearyTales proudly rose activity, keeping always influenced by the incarnations of heavy music along with strong dedication to lyrics, both in English and in Italian. The first official FearyTales album EP-CD, simply entitled “FearyTales”, was published for Buil2Kill/Nadir label in 2019 (also included in the Enhanced CD “Culto della Morte” official videoclip). First full-length “MMXXII” FearyTales album out in 2022 always for Buil2Kill/Nadir. The flamin’ new album entitled “神风=Vento Divino” – already professionally recorded @ Fusix Studio – is now out for legendary Italian label Underground Symphony, in digipack CD format and in all digital stores (artworks by Annette Fletcher, “LightBlind” single official videoclip by Edoardo Giuliani - Kunai)! The actual strong FearyTales line-up is composed by Costantino Perin (drums), Paolo Tabacchetti (guitars), Marco 'Vico' Vicenza (Bass), and me: Marco Chiariglione (voices: clean & grim). We all live and meet in Turin hinterland: Living, listening and playing heavy metal music in the same places, appreciating each other through the years.

Did you have any experience being in a band or being a musician before FearyTales? Can you talk to us about what each member's musical background was probably like before joining FearyTales?

The style of FearyTales is very diverse, in your music you can hear both classic metal sounds and elements of death metal, as well as impressive growling for example. May I ask how your style of music came about? What are some of the bands that have influenced your style the most?

Inc、Faith No More、Suspyre、Mercyful Fate、Dio、Dark Tranquillity、Theatre of Tragedy、Dave Matthews Band、Ivano Fossati、Conception、Kamelot、Mike Patton、Mondo Cane、Negazione、Beyond Twilight、Slayer、Ozzy、Raw Power、Draconian、Pain of Salvation、Napalm Death、Heir Apparent、Armored Saint 等乐队的影响。

Well it’s our FearyMetal style, we could say… We try to mix the (so called) heavy metal genres and styles (but not only) in our songs without any limitations: from AOR to extreme metal, enveloping clean and growl vocals, heavy guitar riffs and blast beat drumming but also more melodic and atmospheric parts. But this mix is not for its own sake: it’s all intended to support songs lyrics an music. At the end we are talking about songs, that could be good or bad: this is the way we try to create our good ones, with our personal and authentic style, or better… we hope so! We try to use all music colors and styles to ‘paint’ FearyTales songs. The only rule is that song works. We try to be less derivative as possible, but of course a lot of band inspired and influenced FearyTales style, maybe each one for different aspects. Personally I would say: Coroner, Marillion, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Holy Terror, Fates Warning, Savatage, Dream Theater, Bruce Dickinson, Genesis, Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti, Metallica, Cradle of Filth, Borknagar, Vintersorg, Sepultura, Sieges Even, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Aborted, Candlemass, Sabbat, Skyclad, Misfits, Grip. V: FearyTales的歌词非常优美。你的一些歌曲使用意大利语，一些使用英语。请问是什么原因让你决定用两种语言写FearyTales的歌词？

FearyTales has beautiful lyrics. Some of your songs are in Italian and some are in English. May I ask what made you decide to write FearyTales lyrics in two languages?

M: 歌词对我来说非常非常重要，FearyTales的歌曲也非常注重歌词。我认为好的、真实的歌词来之不易，它们对我来说是一种恩赐。因此这种稀有而珍贵的恩赐是随遇而安的：英语、意大利语、拉丁语或其他语言......我随遇而安。这是我个人的创作过程。有时，“多语言 ”歌词确实会给我们带来一些问题，比如在音乐行业，寻找标签，商业运作...... 但我认为，无论如何，这都是一个很好的决定：因为它是真实的，这对我/我们来说是最重要的。总现在很多重金属乐队都在歌词中使用他们的母语，比如Borknagar、Vintersorg、Burzum、Seth、Enslaved......还有Rammstein和Måneskin！

Lyrics are very very important for me, and there is a strong dedication to lyrics in FearyTales songs. I think that good and authentic lyrics don’t come easy; they come to me as a sort of gift. Therefore a such rare and precious kind of gift comes as it comes: in English or in Italian, in Latin or whatever… I take it as it comes. It’s a personal creation process that works like this for me. Sometimes the lyrics ‘multiple language’ create us some problems really, like in music industry, looking for a Label, commercially... But I think that it’s a good decision anyway, at all: because it’s authentic, and that’s the most important thing to me/us. Anyway nowadays a lot of heavy metal bands use/used also their native language in lyrics, like Borknagar, Vintersorg, Burzum, Seth, Enslaved… and Rammstein and Måneskin too!

In the band's music videos, I see that you change different masks in different songs. There are many more masks that don't appear in the music video on the band's official website. Each of these masks has its own characteristics and they are all very cool! Who designed these masks? Why did you use masks as part of your look for the FearyTales show? Do the different masks have any different meanings?

I always wear masks during FearyTales shows, interviews and stuff like that. It’s a sort of dramatis persona: like I’m playing a part in a drama. Then yes: masks have different meanings to me, so during our shows I mostly combine masks to particular lyrics and songs. In 2022 you released the full-length album MMXXII, and I really enjoyed Ascension #1 and Ascension #3 from this album, and the guitar solo on Ascension #3 stood out to me. These two songs have the same lyrics but are presented in different arrangements and performances. Can you talk about what inspired these two songs? Why did you choose to play the same lyrics in different arrangements this way?

I’m glad you enjoyed the ‘Ascension songs’. I like them very much too, and I think the “Ascension #3” guitar solo is really a good one. Paolo (Tabacchetti) did a great job! With the ‘Ascension songs’ I tried a sort of experiment: to decline the same lyrics to two (or better three) different songs (and musical parts). Like using the same characters and events to write two (or three) different novels (or dramas), like Stephen King/Richard Bachman did with his “Desperation” and “The Regulators” novels. I think it works…

On the FearyTales self-titled album ‘FearyTales’ there is a track called ‘Ascension #2’. Very different from #1 and #3, this track is very aggressive and leans more towards the classic death metal of the 80‘s and 90’s. Can I ask how this song relates to Ascension #1 and Ascension #3?

M: “Ascension #2”与"Ascension #1"和"Ascension #3"中提到的“Ascension系列”有着同样的关系：用三首（！）不同的歌曲和不同的音乐风格来诠释相同的歌词。一种升级！J. "Ascension #2"--使用了与#1和#3号几乎相同的歌词--这是一首充满活力的好歌，融合了经典金属和Melodic Death Metal的影响。"Ascension #3"更偏经典金属，也更前卫；"Ascension #1"是一首充满力量的Thrash / Death歌曲。

“Ascension #2” has the same relationship with the mentioned ‘Ascension songs’ that the one between “Ascension #1” and “Ascension #3” really: to decline the same lyrics to three (!) different songs and different music styles. A sort of upgrade! J. “Ascension #2” – using almost the same lyrics of #1 and #3 – it’s a good and energetic song, mixing classic metal to some melodic death metal influences. “Ascension #3” is a little more classic and a bit progressive; “Ascension #1” is a strong heavy thrash/death song.

In 2024, FearyTales released a new album, 神风=Vento Divino. It's a wonderful album, on the album I hear you guys adding more musical elements and the different instruments sound very harmonious together. Can you talk to us about the process of creating this album? When did you start working on the album?

We are very proud of the new album “神风=Vento Divino”, we think it’s our best one at all. The songs are great as the lyrics, and music and sounds work perfectly. It's a great achievement for us. We recorded the album in 2023 (!), then we spent more than a year to find a Label interested… It was very difficult: we were too heavy for classic metal labels and too melodic to extreme metal ones; then some labels didn’t like lyrics with multiple languages… Fortunately Maurizio Chiarello of the legendary label Underground Symphony Records understood our music and took FearyTales in his Rooster. And… so here we are! So the “神风=Vento Divino” album was recorded, mixed and mastered in summer 2003 at Fusix Studio by Andrea Fusini ‘of miracles’ and the sound is really great, perfectly balanced and harmonious. Andrea was – and is – really magic. Actually in “神风=Vento Divino” we tried something new, like the orchestrations in “LightBlind” and “La Ginestra” chorus, and at the end of “AdventComes”. I think it works! Some “神风=Vento Divino” songs were already written (“RoXXXanne”), other one were rewritten or rearranged (“La Luminosa Notte dell’Anima”, “Come Inside”, “AdventComes”, “神风=Vento Divino” part. 2), and other were new at all (“LightBlind”, “La Ginestra”, “神风=Vento Divino” part. 1, “In Tinta Caligine”). Mostly we start creating songs from my vocal melodies and lyrics or from a Paolo guitar riff sequence. Then with the song structure mostly defined we work with the rest of the band in rehearsal room and recording demo versions.

The title track of the new album, ‘神风=Vento Divino’ is an eight-minute long song, which is considered one of the longer tracks in FearyTales' oeuvre. It's in Italian, can you share with us what inspired the theme of the song? Why did you choose to include the Chinese character ‘神风’ in the title of the song and album? I noticed that there is a song called ‘Air=Aria’ on the previous album ‘MMXXII’. Is there any connection between these two songs?

M: 哦，这是真的！最长的FearyTales歌曲！我以前都没意识到！... Oh, that’s true! The longest FearyTales song at all! I didn’t realize it before!... J “神風” = “Vento Divino” is really a complex song, written in Italian. It would be parted in two different section really… “Vento Divino” = “Divine Wind” literally translates “神風”, that’s Japanese word for “Kamikaze”. The word has been used since 1281 to refer to the major typhoons that dispersed Mongol-Koryo fleets which invaded Japan under Kublai Khan in 1274 and 1281. On the other hand in the twentieth century Kamikaze defined suicide attacks of Japanese military aviators who flew against Allied naval vessels during Second World War. At the present day Kamikaze is worldwide used to indicate the various terroristic attacks. But I used in an allegorical way “神風” = “Vento Divino” = “Divine Wind” words, that is to say that at the end, in some ways, we are all Kamikaze to life: we are born and we live and we die in suffering and pain, watching all the people we love fall around us, if only we survive them…

No particular connection between the two tracks “神風 = Vento Divino” and “Air=Aria” (except for the ‘pain of living’ common lyrics theme): the sign “=” in the two songs titles means only “translation”, so ‘Aria’ is the Italian translation for English “Air” as Italian “Vento Divino” for Japanse “神風”. That’s all. J We are very proud of the title “神風 = Vento Divino” with his harsh sense of menace. The same menace reflected in the (great) album artworks, by Annette Fletcher.

V: 与上一张专辑"MMXXII"相比，你认为这张专辑和"MMXXII"在音乐上最大的不同是什么？

Compared to your last album ‘MMXXII’, what do you think is the most different between this album and ‘MMXXII’ musically?

M: "MMXXII"是一张很棒的专辑，歌曲丰富，音效极佳，我们为此深感自豪。但我认为“神风 = Vento Divino”更上一层楼......音效更好，歌曲和歌词都非常不错。但最重要的是，我认为“神风 = Vento Divino”比“MMXXII”更加坚实、清新、有机和统一。也许这就是两张专辑之间更进一步的 “升级 ”。

Well “MMXXII” was a great album, with huge songs and a very good sound, and we are very proud of it. But I think “神風 = Vento Divino” is on another level … Better sound, incredible songs and lyrics. But most of all I think “神風 = Vento Divino” is more solid, fresh, organic and homogeneous than “MMXXII”. Maybe that’s the bigger ‘upgrade’ between the two album…

V: 我想知道你们在FearyTales中的歌曲创作过程是怎样的？谁更负责歌曲的编曲？哪些成员主要负责填词？

I was wondering what your songwriting process is like in FearyTales? Who is responsible for arrangement of the songs more? Which members are primarily responsible for your lyrics?

M: 可能我的责任更重大一些，哎呀，我负责FearyTales的编曲，但一般是和Paolo以及乐队的其他成员一起负责这个部分；而FearyTales的所有人声旋律和歌词只由我负责。

Probably I’m the more guilty, ooops, responsible for FearyTales arrangements, but always with Paolo and the rest of the band; While I’m the only responsible for all FearyTales vocal melodies and lyrics.

V: FearyTales的第一张EP-CD“FearyTales”和第二张全长专辑均由Buil2Kill/Nadir唱片公司发行。而你们的最新专辑"神风=Vento Divino"则由意大利厂牌Underground Symphony发行。请问你为什么决定更换厂牌？新厂牌给FearyTales带来了哪些变化？

FearyTales' first EP-CD “FearyTales” as well as the second full-length album were released on the Buil2Kill/Nadir label. Your latest album ‘神风=Vento Divino’, on the other hand, was released on the Italian label Underground Symphony. May I ask why you decided to change labels? What changes has the new label brought to FearyTales?

M: 我们与Buil2Kill唱片公司的Federico (Gasperi) 和Trevor (Sadist) 以及 Nadir推广公司合作得非常愉快。但从第一张EP开始，我们就Underground Symphony Records的Maurizio Chiarello有联系，这是一个传奇的厂牌，曾为Labyrinth、Skylark、Sabaton、Olaf Thorsen、Fabio Lione等令人难以置信的乐队做过推广。因此我们对这份新合约感到非常荣幸，希望未来一切顺利。啊，Underground Symphony的Maurizio只给了我们提供了很好的建议，对FearyTales 来说没有特别的变化。

We worked very well with Federico (Gasperi) and Trevor (Sadist) of Buil2Kill label and Nadir promotion. But since the first EP we were in contact with Maurizio Chiarello of Underground Symphony Records, a legendary label that worked and promoted incredible bands like Labyrinth, Skylark, Sabaton, Olaf Thorsen, Fabio Lione... So, we are very honored of this new deal, and we hope the best for the future. Ah, from Maurizio of Underground Symphony only very good advices, no particular changes in FearyTales.

V: FearyTales的Logo设计很有特色，看起来像是用羽毛笔在纸上手写的字体，Logo由F和T两个字母交叉组成。请问你们的Logo是谁设计的？

FearyTales has a very distinctive logo design, which looks like a handwritten font written on paper with a feather quill, and a logo that consists of the letters F and T crossed together. May I ask who designed your logo?

M: FearyTales 的Logo最初是由乐队的一位老成员设计的： Alessandro Pinato。我认为他的灵感来自"指环王传奇"......后我们的图形艺术家Annette Fletcher对Logo进行了重新设计和完善，她的工作非常出色，如"MMXXII"和“神风 = Vento Divino”等作品。而乐队的名字则是我的创意，是对英文单词 “faery tales”的变形。

FearyTales logos were originally designed by an old member of the band: Alessandro Pinato. I think he was inspired by the Lord of the Rings saga… Later the logos were reworked and refined by our graphic artist Annette Fletcher who did a great job, as in “MMXXII” and in “神風 = Vento Divino” artworks. Instead the name of the band is a creation of mine, twisting the English words ‘faery tales’.

V: 2025年乐队有什么计划？有演出计划吗？能和我们分享一下乐队最近在做什么项目吗？

What are the band's plans for 2025? Do you have any gigs planned? Is it possible to share with us what projects the band has been working on recently?

M: 2025年4月18日，我们将与Dust和 Helicon在都灵附近Ciriè 的 Capolinea（前Taurus）参加 “From Turin WITH HATE”现场。遗憾的是FearyTales 没有大型现场演出或巡演，因为我们没有经纪公司或管理团队，而且至少到目前为止，我们不会为了演出费而去演出（我们都老了，不适合去做这些破事......）。然后我们将在排练室里排练新的FearyTales歌曲，这对我来说是最美好的时光。

At 18-04-2025 we will be at “FROM TURIN WITH HATE” live event with Dust and Helicon at Capolinea (ex Taurus) in Ciriè, near Turin. Unfortunately no great live shows or tours for FearyTales really, because we have no agency or management and – at least until now – we won’t pay to play (we are too old for this shit…). Then we’ll be in rehearsal room finally working at new FearyTales songs, really the best time for me.
