The band we interviewed today is the Old School Death Metal band from Czech Republic, Pandeia. The band was originally formed in 1995 by guitarist Alex and bassist Jarda. In 1993, guitarist Alex and bassist Jarda played and recorded a demo work called "Mystery of Runa" in a band called Suffering. Soon after, the band discovered that a band from Finland was a duplicate of Suffering, so they decided to rename themselves as Pandeia. This name was also thought of by the band's old lead singer and has been used until now. Therefore, you can consider the Suffering band as the predecessor band of Pandeia. The band also started creating and recording works based on Pandeia. From 1995 to 1997, the band released two demo works and began performing in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In 1999, the band debuted on Lost Disc Records in the United States The label released their first official album "Spreading the Message", which allowed more fans to get to know the band. In 2003, the band released their second official album "Personal Demon" under their old label, which I personally consider to be one of their most outstanding works. It also earned the band more invitations to major music festivals. Subsequently, the band released several classic works, and Awakening Productions from China also reissued early demos and albums for the band. In 2025, the band released their latest album "Darkened Devotion" on Hammerheart Records in the Netherlands. At the time of the release of the new album, the magazine contacted band member Alex. I had an exclusive interview!

Hello Mr. Alex, it's nice to meet you. Thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has accepted an interview from a Chinese magazine. First of all, I would like to say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. Pandemia was founded in 1995 and is a long-standing band with a long history. Who proposed the formation of this band?

Hi, and heavy metallic greetings to all our Chinese fans! It is an amazing opportunity to speak with you and expand our mission to spread true death metal. Our Chinese connection comes via Awakening Productions, which recently re-released our first two albums and demos. I hope these records are finding some great audience in your country, they are some pretty cool, honest death metal albums. Anyway. The band was a brainchild of me and the bassist Jarda. We already played in a band called Suffering, founded in late 1993, and recorded a demo “Mystery of Runa”. When we discovered that there was already a Finnish band called Suffering, we changed our name to Pandemia. Pandemia was a name our former singer, Matthew, came up with; it was very unusual, and he had to explain to us in a lengthy way what it actually meant. I guess after 2020 nobody would wonder :). So the first Pandemia line-up was born in 1995, and we recorded two demos and started playing gigs in the Czech and Slovak Republics. Those were very rough beginnings, with very limited access to money and equipment, but we were so committed to the band and death metal that we became good friends with Krabathor and their management, and they opened up the band to larger audiences. We are still grateful for that opportunity. Very early on, after our second demo, we were already playing as a support band for Kreator and Dimmu Borgir at a gig in Prague. We have some fond memories of those first few years as a band.

Now, only you and bassist Jaroslav are the first-generation members of the band, and the other two members have been replaced. Why did the old members leave the band? How did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job?

There were multiple reasons. Btw, I also left in 2005 and then slowly and reluctantly returned in 2020 :). As for the others, we changed a drummer several times in the first 10 years, first we fired the original drummer due to his lack of commitment and then our second drummer, Tom, who joined in 1997 had to leave for health reasons and as his body and hands were struggling playing fast death metal, unfortunately. He is a great guy, and we are still in touch. In terms of singers, our first guy, Matthew also had to leave to focus on his family and was replaced with Michal in 1996, he stayed with the band until 2008 and was a big part of all our first three albums and we had a great time touring the world together, I do miss him sometimes, such a cool dude. After I left in 2005, the band reformed in a sort of version 2.0 incarnation and slightly changed the stylistic direction. I think it was good for them to focus on a slightly simpler and less chaotic style of composition. The singer who joined in 2008, Jirka, is still with us and has an amazing and powerful voice, which you can hear on the new album. The last member to mention is Jakub, who is our current drummer and joined in 2022. He is a bit of a legend on the Czech scene, playing in multiple other bands; he’s extremely skilled, and he has elevated the rhythm part of our band tremendously. A lesser-known fact is that we also had a lineup for a few months in 2001 where we played with Marthus on drums, the guy who currently plays in Cradle of Filth. With him, we did a bunch of gigs in Europe and composed the song Personal Demon together.

Every album of your band has excellent recording effects, especially this year's new album. Which studio did you record your albums in? Which producer made the album for you? Is the recording process of the new album progressing smoothly?

Thank you, we are always trying to find as good a production team as we can get. The band has worked with legends such as Andy Classen and Waldemar Sorychta. For the new album, we decided to take our time, record all the string instruments and vocals in my studio and the drums in a big, renowned Czech studio called The Barn. Then, for the mixing part we talked to a bunch of studios abroad, and eventually settled on Demigod Recordings. Their sound is incredibly pristine and loud. They did a wonderful job with the tracks I supplied, and Miguel had a great connection to our songs and enjoyed the process greatly. We aimed for a more modern sound while keeping the spirit of the 90s death metal in the sonic representation somehow. It turned out beyond our expectations, and it is a real treat playing the album on a good sound system or a pair of headphones. It is so much fun to listen to and cuts straight through like a proper death metal album should. As for production… When I was returning to the band, I was quite reluctant as I am pretty busy in my life, and the point that swayed me was when Jarda offered that I could take care of the music / artistic part for the next album. So when the album came around, I pulled together some of the best riffs I had in my archive and also created a bunch of new songs from the authentic nighttime spaces I found myself in. It was composed and produced by me between 2022 and 2024.

Each member of your band is an experienced musician in creating death metal. Can you introduce your creative experience? I believe your creative experience will bring inspiration to many young musicians. Is the process of creating the new album going smoothly?

To be honest, the creative part is quite taxing. I love it, but it takes it out of you, I think I aged 10 years during the process of putting the new album together, haha. For myself, I like pure creativity, and I honour ideas as they come. I record the best ones that I sense have some potential in them, either on my phone or into my laptop. I label them as fast, slow, rolling, etc. Then, when working on a particular song, I go to the pool of riffs and take one that fits the mood. A lot of the ideas came during sleepless nights or moments of inspiration, even when out walking. There was a luxury that I had 15 years of riffs and ideas in the box, so there was no shortage of original ideas and good riffs when putting the album together. As for the others, Jakub is super organised and a professional. I sent him the from tracks with my loops, and he elevated them to the next level. You know when guitarists create drum tracks, it is not quite perfect, and it was important for Jakub to put his mark on the songs, which. With vocals, Jirka is an extremely busy man, and it took a while to get us together in one room to work on the songs. We tried some vocal recordings at The Barn studio, but then decided to do a fresh take, and he came over to my place, where we worked on all the songs together. He is also a professional, and once we found our way of working, it went very fast. We got the vocals ready and recorded in one week.

Agony, Sin, The Devil are the music themes of your band. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?

Well, we are actually looking beyond these topics. I can’t speak for the lyrics on the albums I wasn’t involved in, but the new album is all about overcoming adversity and dealing with anxieties and issues to come to a better place. I believe all negativity is important as it teaches us about ourselves, but it is essential to take it, learn from it and transform. I would never glorify the devil or pain, but understand it is a big part of life and needs to be addressed. The new album focuses on how to transform nighttime anxieties (insomnia, sleep paralysis, demonic possession) into something useful and more powerful. There is always a silver lining in every song, showing a victory over every topic, leading to a more meaningful and satisfying life. The lyrics on the album were shared between me and Jirka equally to ensure we have diversity, but at the same time stick to the topic.

Your band's logo design is very simple, but it also reveals complex design concepts. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork design is also very beautiful, especially this year's artwork is very beautiful. Who designed these artworks for you?

Thank you, I appreciate that you noticed these details. The logo has gone through several versions and has eventually settled into the current version. The very first logo was drawn by our first drummer, Pavel, and then for each release, we’d improve it a little bit. The final version galvanised on our second album, Personal Demon, and it was done by an artist by the name Jirka Sobr, who is a very close friend of mine. I always had a vision that every album would have a slightly different, improved logo, but that changed when I was out of the band, and we now stick to the version of the logo from Personal Demon times. Anyways, regarding the new album. The artwork was done in several phases. I found this artist, Giovanni Ponziano, on Artstation, and we started talking. He did one version of the cover, which wasn’t so aligned, and we had a bit of a difficult situation coming up with the new concept. After a few iterations, Giovanni came up with the idea of the main protagonist from the album emerging from a glass portal to go face and hunt the demons that cause him trouble at night. A wonderful rendition, it all worked out very well. He also did another version of the cover, which can be found on the LP insert. I can only recommend Giovanni’s artwork; he paints in Photoshop with brushes and everything and is strictly against using AI in art. You can find him on Instagram.

Are you satisfied with their work? How did you get in touch with Chinese labels when you also collaborated with them to re release old albums in our country?

I guess we were very lucky with all these. Lost Disciple fell in love with our third demo and offered us a 2 album deal. Metal Age was also pretty cool, and I enjoyed working with them on Riven. The new album caught the eye of Hammerheart Records, who are absolute legends in the music scene, and they have very similar musical tastes to us. I like most of their releases. It was a bit of a miracle that they responded when we were hunting for a record label in the summer last year. They offered us a pretty good deal and we decided to wait until May 2025 for the album release, although we had everything ready (mix, master and artwork) already in the summer of 2024. They had a very full release calendar, and May was the earliest they could fit us in. These guys are awesome, and so far the collaboration is very smooth. Hammerheart have been on our radar since our first album, they released the first Rebaelliun album, and we toured together in 2000, noticing how well taken care of the band was by Hammerheart. I guess we had to mature and progress to the state we are in now as a band to be able to work with them. They also have a PR agency, Hold Tight, who help us push the album out there.

Your band did not release any new works for a long time after 2015, and it wasn't until 2022 that you started releasing new singles. In 2025, you released your latest album, which has been 10 years since your last album. What is the reason for your delay in releasing a new album?

Basically, the band was on hiatus between 2017 and 2022. Jarda took a break from the Pandemia activities, and then, when he decided to reform the band, he first came to me to see whether we could bring back the spirit of Pandemia version 1.0. So yeah, there was a long break. Also, the current lineup is geographically quite apart from each other, and it took a while to get us all aligned and the album composed, taking in everyone’s schedules and other commitments.

First of all, congratulations to your band for releasing their new album "Darkened Devotion" this year, which is also your latest album after a decade. Your work blends elements of groove metal, European death gold, and Thrash Metal, making it easy to distinguish you from other Czech bands. Your beautiful melodies have left a deep impression on all fans, the drummer's performance is very steady, and the singer's deep and powerful singing is also a highlight of the album. What is your opinion on your own work? What are the changes between the new album and the old album?

Thank you! It sounds like you really got the spirit of the album and its intention. We didn’t want to repeat the previous album and decided to let me do the composition, using the typical Pandemia style from pre-2006. There are a lot of unusual chords and hidden progressive elements while keeping the groove going, which is probably hard to notice as it creates a cohesive atmosphere. To be honest, I am very proud of the record, and it is something I will probably fully appreciate when I am older. Currently, I am so deep into it and have heard it about 300 times when composing, recording demos, all other recording sessions, producing… I don’t know exactly what it must sound like to a fresh pair of ears, but I believe it is a very good album and something that is currently missing on the death metal scene, which is very saturated. I personally really like the sound and all the performances of the guys from the band, it is top-level. The album sounds modern but keeps the original metal spirit intact.

As an old band, you have participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? Which music festivals are you planning to participate in in in 2025? If one day the organizers in China invite you to perform in China, would you be willing to give a wonderful performance to Chinese fans?

A: 我们过去参加了一些很酷的节日。我还记得我们参加像Obscene Extreme或Brutal Assault这样的节日。我们还参加了在葡萄牙的Steel Warriors Rebellion节日并喜欢在那里度过的时光。一些独特的现场情况是在2000年我们与Vader一起巡演时，在欧洲各地演出，包括白俄罗斯和西班牙等地。此外我们在拉丁美洲进行了两次大型巡演，几乎演奏了从巴西到墨西哥的每一个国家。那些经历太棒了，粉丝们太疯狂了！我们仍然喜欢在新地方演出，比如中国。如果可行的话，请发出邀请。我们是经验丰富的旅行者，很高兴前往你们的国家。我相信你们的现场一定非常强大，对真正的金属乐队非常欣赏！

We have played some cool fests over time. I still remember our appearances at fests like Obscene Extreme or Brutal Assault. We also took part in the Steel Warriors Rebellion fest in Portugal and loved the time spent there. Some of the unique live situations were when we toured with Vader back in 2000, playing all across Europe, including places such as Belarus and Spain, all over the place. Also, we did 2 huge tours in Latin America, playing practically every country from Brazil to Mexico. Those were incredible experiences, and the fans were so wild! We would still love to play in new places, such as China. Please extend an invitation if something feasible comes up, we are experienced travellers and are happy to make our way to your country, I believe your scene must be very strong and appreciative of real metal bands!
