Back in the 1990s Eastern‑Bloc era, Czech band Pathologist made their mark on listeners worldwide with just two albums. No lengthy discography, no large‑scale tours, no commercial packaging.Relying solely on their two full‑length records from 1992 and 1993, with raw, morbid, heavily‑weighted riffs, they stepped outside the blueprint laid down by the Carcass‑influenced British gore‑grind school and forged a sound entirely their own. Their physical releases remain highly sought‑after by collectors across the globe to this day.Thirty years on, this long‑dormant band has never been forgotten. Countless newer acts draw inspiration from their arrangements, rhythmic feel and morbid aesthetic. Today, Volcano Magazine has reached out to the band for an exclusive interview.

The band was formed in 1990 through the merger of two groups, Fucking Death and Sarkom. What circumstances led to this formation? Why was the name Pathologist chosen? Could you introduce to our readers what the extreme‑metal atmosphere was like in the Czech Republic at that time?
I must correct you. Pathologist were actually formed back in 1989 as noisecore band. I founded the band at university and the name just popped into my head whilst I was translating the lyrics from Carcass first album. Before that however I’d been playing drums in the thrash band Fucking Death, whilst Hary and Kÿller had their own band Sarkom. When Hary and I got together later on, we carried on under the already established name Pathologist. Incidentally our drummer Stanley also had band called Respirator, and our original bassist Alda had band called Brajgl. As you can see, the underground scene was really buzzing back then.
Your songwriting has influenced countless subsequent grindcore bands. What kind of grindcore were you aiming to create back then, and how did you initially settle on medical‑pathological themes as the band’s core concept?
Napalm Death、Terrorizer、O.
Back in those early days there was only one style, which was beginning to be called grindcore. Among its first pioneers were bands such as Napalm Death, Terrorizer, O. L. D., Repulsion and Carcass. And it was the latter British trio that influenced us the most, because we liked them the best. We were fascinated by the animalistic brutality and the extremely sick lyrics, which were complete novelty on the scene.
Looking back on your two classic early releases, you created two full‑length albums in quick succession between 1992 and 1993. What was the band’s creative mindset and rehearsal routine during that period? The riffs on your second album lean more toward an old‑school death‑metal feel rather than the high‑speed style of Carcass. What motivated this creative direction, and which bands influenced you in this regard?
Yes, our second album sounds more like death metal than our debut, which was more grindcore. That was because Hary and Kÿller wanted the sound of the recording to be a bit cleaner and more distinct. Stanley and I, on the other hand, were leaning towards the more extreme end of the spectrum. And this was a sort of compromise between four minds who grew up on metal and hardcore. I’ve been part of this scene since the early eighties myself, so I’ve been influenced by hundreds of different and interesting bands. For example Hellhammer, Bathory, Autopsy, Extreme Noise Terror, Wehrmacht, Violent Force...
Your vocal delivery sounds deeply morbid. When you recorded the vocals, did you rely purely on raw vocal performance, or did you use vocal effects?
I’ve always been interested in just how low a range you can get from the human throat. I liked the extreme and brutal sounds that a person can produce. I didn’t use any studio effects, I simply devised and then refined two different guttural techniques.
After releasing Gluttony of Morbidity in 1993, the band entered a decades‑long period of inactivity, only issuing archival compilation records instead of brand‑new full‑length albums. What reasons lay behind this decision to go dormant?
Hold on, you’ve got that wrong. Pathologist has absolutely nothing to do with that title. We were simply working on our third album entitled “Extremely Censored!”. Unfortunately however it was never released, even though we already had plenty of ideas. At that time though Hary and Kÿller started dabbling in funky music, and work on the album then petered out…
Alongside other 1990s pathological‑themed gore‑grind acts such as Carcass and General Surgery, your band is frequently mentioned alongside them. In your opinion, what is the biggest difference that sets your two early albums apart?
Who knows, but there are certainly differences. Carcass influenced us immensely and we’re not ashamed of that. General Surgery came along after us, but all the gore bands back then were influenced by Carcass. They were simply the first and at the same time the best. That remains absolutely clear to this day, and all grinders respect this simple fact without reservation.
Thirty‑years on, a huge audience of extreme‑metal fans still reveres these two classic records, regarding them as textbooks of gore‑grind. How do you view their legendary status within the grindcore scene?
To be honest, I don’t really get it. Of course we appreciate it immensely and would like to thank all the excellent fanatics from around the world for their unwavering interest in Pathologist. We’re delighted by it, but we don’t think it should be blown out of proportion. After all there were far more bands that were just as good.

Could you share some behind‑the‑scenes stories from the creation of these two landmark albums?
Both albums were recorded in the same studio with the same sound engineers. Whilst working on the first album, we were only just getting to grips with the possibilities of studio work. Our producer was constantly advising us and patiently correcting our mistakes. By the time we recorded the second album, we were naturally much more experienced and were even praised by the producer. There was very friendly atmosphere in the studio and we had a lot of fun, even though we were making quite extreme music.
We were very saddened to learn of the passing of your drummer Stanislav. Many fans were shocked and upset by the news. If you are comfortable doing so, could you talk about the circumstances of his passing, as well as your memories of working together in Pathologist during the 1990s?
Macabre And Massacre Salute To Pathologist Disfigured And Horrified!"——而永垂不朽;该合辑由 Bizarre Leprous Production厂牌发行,汇集了来自世界各地的地下乐队。
It’s been three years now since Stanley passed away. He had long-standing health complications, which he eventually succumbed to. His infectious laugh and crushing drumbeats however will never fade away. He’s now happily grinding out in the afterlife with his all-time favourites Jesse Pintado, Jeff Hanneman, Killjoy and Quorthon. No doubt there’s already been a posthumous drumming medley featuring Cichon from Cerebral Turbulency, Doc from Vader and Dick from Onany Boys. These are all deceased drummers who had connection to Pathologist. Stanley’s legacy will also be immortalised for all eternity on the forthcoming tribute album Forensically Putrescible Tribute To Pathologist Extremely Fermenting! Macabre And Massacre Salute To Pathologist Disfigured And Horrified!*, featuring underground bands from across the globe under the Bizarre Leprous Production label.
You have put out archival compilation albums in 2017 and 2023. Are there any unreleased demos still preserved, and do you have plans to release them in the future?
Not at all. All surviving recordings from Pathologist’s entire history have already been officially released on wide variety of formats. But I know there are few amateur recordings of our gigs circulating in the underground scene.
Today, many younger gore‑grind and old‑school death‑metal musicians treat Pathologist as a point of reference. What would you hope the newer generation can learn from your work?
It’s brilliant that younger bands still love that good old rot and try to play in similar style to us. I’ve been keeping a close eye on our scene for many years now, and it gives me great pleasure. Thanks to this genuine and honest grindcore, gore or death metal will never be consigned to the dustbin of history.
Looking back to the present day, where does Pathologist stand within your long musical career?
Pathologist is our joint creation, and that will never change. The band never officially split up. To this day all the members are great friends. I’m in closest contact with the guitarist Hary, because as well as music we share lots of other hobbies.
Your physical releases remain highly sought‑after among metal collectors. Is there anything you would like to say to fans who are passionate about Pathologist’s music?
We’d like to tell all our super fans that we really appreciate their support. We’re truly very grateful for it. Our recordings are constantly being re-released in various editions, which is fucking great.
It is a great honour for us to interview the legendary Pathologist. We hope this conversation will remind more listeners of the morbid, ferocious sound of the band. To conclude this interview, do you have any final words for our readers?
It’s truly great pleasure for Pathologist to discover that even in vast country like China, they have their own loyal fans. We’d love to visit there sometime in the future, if only to see the beautifully diverse natural landscape. Until then take care everyone and stay sickly macabre!
