Throughout the evolution of metal music, death metal has always represented an extreme expression of humanity’s darker side, social oppression, and inner conflicts. Since their formation in 1997, Dutch band Enraged has remained committed to the underground spirit, using the fierce language of death metal to explore the complex relationships between fear, power, belief, and the human psyche. Although they have shared stages with legendary bands such as Arch Enemy, Deicide, and Gorefest, Enraged has maintained a relatively low profile over the years. Their latest album It’s Your Fear That Feeds Their Power not only features legendary guitarists such as James Murphy and Andy LaRocque, but also demonstrates the band’s continuous pursuit of musical depth, technical expression, and the true spirit of metal.

Enraged was formed in 1997 and has witnessed the evolution of death metal from its golden era in the 1990s to the diverse landscape of modern extreme music. Looking back on the band’s journey, what do you think are the biggest changes death metal has experienced over the years? And how has Enraged maintained its own identity throughout these changes?

D: 我们认为，过去几十年里死亡金属最显著的变化在于它变得更加主流化了。此外，由于失去了最初的地下地位，死亡金属那种极致的特质似乎也丧失了一些精髓。与此同时，高超的演奏技巧也开始受到推崇。对 Enraged 而言，最重要的始终是创作出既出色又充满侵略性的歌曲——从 90 年代的首张小样"Tirade"我们最新的全长专辑，莫不如此。我们的音乐有时会受到老派死亡金属的影响，有时也会融入现代死亡金属的元素。

We think the most striking changes to deathmetal in the past few decades was that it went way more mainstream. Furthermore deathmetal’s extremity kinda lost its essence, because of the loss of its original underground status. Next to that technical musicianship gained popularity. The main importance with Enraged always was to maintain in just writing good but aggressive songs: from our first ‘Tirade’ demo back in the ’90’s to our most recent full-length album. Sometimes turning out into an influence from old school deathmetal, as well more from modern forms of deathmetal into our music.

In the 1990s, death metal was not only a musical style but also a spirit of rebellion — challenging social norms and exploring the darker aspects of humanity. For you, what is the most important spiritual core of death metal?

D: 尽管我们得承认，我们并不会对死亡金属或音乐本身进行哲学层面的探讨，但我们认为你的第一个建议最为贴切：反叛与极致应当是其核心。

Although we have to admit we don’t phylosophize deathmetal or music in general, we think your first suggestion suits best: rebellion and extremity should be the core.

V: Enraged 曾与 Arch Enemy、Deicide、Gorefest 等重要乐队同台演出。这些经历对于乐队的发展有什么影响？你们如何看待地下乐队与金属历史之间的联系？

Enraged has shared the stage with important bands such as Arch Enemy, Deicide, and Gorefest. How have these experiences influenced the band’s development? How do you view the connection between underground bands and the history of metal music?

D: 与上述这类乐队同台演出，无疑激励了我们去打磨自身的音乐风格与现场表现。我们认为，金属乐最初正是源于地下音乐圈，因此两者之间的联系始终至关重要。此外，还有许多才华横溢的金属乐队蓄势待发，准备从地下场景中脱颖而出；它们渴望被金属乐迷发掘，因为它们的音乐值得全球每一位金属乐迷去聆听。

Playing gigs with acts like forementioned definitely inspired us to sharpen our sound and show. We think metal developed out of the underground scene in the first place, so a connection between those has always been relevant. Next to that a lot of talented metalbands are still ready to rise out of the underground scene, eager to be explored by metal fans because their music deserve to be listened by every metalhead on the planet.

V: 尽管拥有优秀的作品和传奇音乐人的参与，Enraged 仍然保持着地下状态。你认为“地下精神”对于一支金属乐队意味着什么？它是否比商业成功更加重要？

Despite having strong material and collaborations with legendary musicians, Enraged has remained an underground band. What does the “underground spirit” mean to you? Is it more important than commercial success?

D: 感谢您对我们音乐的赞赏。不过，我们想强调一点：我们从未打算一直做一支“地下”乐队。我们非常希望能让大众听到我们的音乐，但如果没有外界助力——比如拥有雄厚宣传预算的唱片公司——要做到这一点确实很难。我们投入大量心血创作、录制和混音，又耗费时间和资金发行唱片，绝不是为了让广大金属乐迷听不到我们的音乐；恰恰相反，我们希望尽可能多的人能接触并了解我们的音乐。也许这次采访能助我们一臂之力，让我们接触到更多中国的金属乐迷 :-) 因此，对我们而言，“地下精神”意味着一种被迫的默默无闻，而这并非我们最初所追求的状态。

Thanks for your kind words about our music. Although we would like to emphasize that it never was our intention to remain an underground band at all. We’re very much into reaching the masses with our music, but it’s just hard to do so without help from - for instance - a record label with a big promotional budget. We never put so much effort in writing our songs, recording/mixing them and time and money in releasing our records just to keep our music out of sight for the metalfan masses. On the contrary. We want as much people getting acquainted with our music. Maybe this interview might help us out a bit in reaching as much metalheads in China as possible :-) So for us, the underground spirit means a forced anonymity we were never into in the first place..

The title of your latest album It’s Your Fear That Feeds Their Power carries a strong philosophical meaning. The idea that “fear feeds power” seems to explore human psychology, social control, and individual freedom. Could you share the core concept behind this album?

D: 这张专辑歌词的核心理念，在于洞穿那种利用恐惧进行的大规模操纵。我们要意识到这种操纵，并有意识地避免受制于那些将恐惧作为控制手段的险恶企图。不妨留意一下我们专辑内页中那个隐晦的形象——专辑的视觉设计极好地诠释了这张完整专辑的理念。

The core concept of the lyrics of this album is to pierce through grand-scale manipulation by fear. To be aware of this manipulation and to consciously avoid being manipulated by dark intentions which use fear as a tool to keep you under control. Just watch the subliminal figure in the album booklet (cd inlay) of our record: the artwork in our album explains the concept of our full-length very well.

V: 这张专辑中的歌词和概念是否来源于现实经历？在创作过程中，你们如何平衡个人情绪表达与更广泛的人类主题？

Are the lyrics and concepts of this album inspired by real-life experiences? During the creative process, how do you balance personal emotional expression with broader themes concerning humanity?

D: 有些是，有些则不然。不过，只要看看每日新闻，你就能明白并看到这张专辑的核心主题在现实生活中是如何持续发挥作用的。另一方面，以专辑最后一首歌"The Cleansing"为例，其歌词灵感源自Graham Hancock的著作"Fingerprints of the Gods"。但总的来说，我们在创作时从未刻意去平衡个人情感表达与更宏大的主题；歌词创作完全由灵感主导。只要符合我们对作品的要求，我们在写词时便不会给自己设下任何限制。

Some of them are, some of them don’t. Although you just have to watch daily news to understand and see how the main theme of this album is still being used effectively in daily life. On the other hand, the lyrics for the last track on the album, ‘The Cleansing’, for example, were inspired by the ‘Fingerprints of the gods’ book by author Graham Hancock. But in general, we never intended to balance between personal emotional expression and broader themes that much. Inspiration leads the way in writing our lyrics. We never gave ourselves limitations or whatsoever during writing lyrics. As long as they fit to our demands on our releases.

V: "It’s Your Fear That Feeds Their Power"邀请了James Murphy（Death、Obituary、Testament）、Andy LaRocque（King Diamond）、Christopher Malmström（Darkane）以及 Jens van der Valk（God Dethroned、Autumn）参与吉他演奏。这些传奇吉他手的加入对于专辑的声音和创作产生了怎样的影响？

It’s Your Fear That Feeds Their Power features guitar contributions from legendary musicians including James Murphy (Death, Obituary, Testament), Andy LaRocque (King Diamond), Christopher Malmström (Darkane), and Jens van der Valk (God Dethroned, Autumn). How did the involvement of these iconic guitarists influence the sound and creative process of the album?

D: 其实并不算多。当那些吉他大师受邀为"Enraged"这张专辑锦上添花时，所有的音乐创作和编曲工作其实都已经完成了。只有Jos Hindriks和Jens van der Valk的贡献相对大一些：Jos创作了专辑中纯器乐曲目"Respice Finem"的音乐基底，而Jens van der Valk则担纲了专辑中其余大部分吉他独奏的演奏。至于专辑的音效与混音，则是由制作人Jochem Jacobs与乐队紧密合作完成的。但必须强调的是，所有参与演奏的乐手都功不可没，共同打造出了这张令我们至今仍深感自豪的重磅佳作。

Not that much actually. All music and arrangements we’re finished at the time the guitarlegends stepped in to add their icing on the Enraged cake. Only the contribution of Jos Hindriks and Jens van der Valk was a little bigger. Jos because he also wrote the basics of instrumental track ‘Respice Finem’ on the album. And Jens van der Valk because he played most of the remaining guitar solos on the album. And for the sound and mixing of the album: producer Jochem Jacobs in close collaboration with the band itself was responsible for that part. But we must say, all people involved in playing on the album helped in creating a beast of an album on which we’re still very, very proud.

V: 死亡金属的发展经历了从早期粗糙、暴力的声音，到现代更加精准、技术化制作的变化。你们如何看待“技术性”和“原始攻击性”之间的关系？

Death metal has evolved from the raw and aggressive sounds of its early days to today’s more precise and technically advanced productions. How do you view the relationship between technicality and raw aggression in death metal?

D: 我们认为这纯属个人口味问题。但正如我们之前所言，创作出优秀的歌曲才是重中之重——至少对 Enraged 而言是如此。音乐中过分炫技往往会掩盖作品的本质，让人忽略音乐本身。我们相信，将一首佳作中最精华的元素融合在一起，才能造就最棒的音乐。

We think that’s just a matter of personal taste. But like we’ve told previously, ending up with good songs should be the biggest priority. At least what Enraged concerns. Too much technicality in music tends to blind the listener. A mixture of the strongest elements of a good track creates the best music, we think.

V: Enraged 的音乐中融合了厚重的低音、快速鼓点以及复杂吉他结构。在编曲过程中，你们通常如何构建一首歌曲？是先从一个核心 Riff 出发，还是从整体氛围和主题开始？

Enraged’s music combines heavy riffs, fast drumming, and complex guitar structures. When composing songs, how do you usually build a track? Do you start from a central riff, or do you begin with an overall atmosphere and concept?

D: 我们的歌曲创作通常始于吉他乐句（riff）——有时是一个单独的乐句，有时是几个乐句片段的组合。随后，鼓点加入，构建出曲目的基本编曲框架与动态起伏。基于这些初步构思，我们开始完善整首歌曲，层层叠加吉他独奏和人声；若某首歌曲需要独特的质感，我们甚至会加入管弦乐编排或采样元素。

Our songs mostly start-off from guitar riffs. Sometimes just with a single riff, sometimes with small pieces of riff arrangements. Then drums are coming in to create basic arrangements and dynamics of the tracks. With those basic song ideas we start building our tracks. Adding guitar solo's and vocals in extra layers. Or even adding some orchestral arrangements and samples if the specific song needs a special touch.

V: James Murphy、Andy LaRocque 等吉他手代表了不同年代金属音乐的重要传统。从你们的角度来看，他们对于金属吉他发展的贡献是什么？

Guitarists such as James Murphy and Andy LaRocque represent important traditions from different eras of metal music. From your perspective, what contributions have they made to the development of metal guitar?

Hard to tell. Their contributions to our album was never out of any of their historical context to the development of metal guitar. We were just very chuffed what both did on albums such like ‘Cause Of Death’, ‘Spiritual Healing’ and ‘Individual Thought Patterns’. We figured our ‘It’s Your Fear..’ album would stand out even more with those guys playing on it. Both did a fantastic job: James Murphy on our track ‘Dictated By Misanthropy pt. II’ and Andy LaRocque on our song ‘Confusion’. Better check it out!

Today, many young guitarists pursue extreme speed, complex techniques, and technical demonstrations. However, the history of death metal shows that a memorable riff is often more important than pure speed. How do you view the relationship between technique and emotional expression?

D: 正如我们之前所说，我们认为一首好歌比单纯的演奏技巧更重要。在我们看来，既需要出色的riff，也需要优秀的编曲功底。同时，千万别低估了动态变化的重要性——这正是鼓点大显身手的地方。但归根结底，创作歌曲还是得靠“感觉”；这种感觉既可能源于灵感的自然迸发，也可能来自丰富的现场演出经验。我们倾向于将这些要素融合在一起，从而创作出属于我们的歌曲。

It’s like we’ve mentioned before: we think a good song is more important than technicality. In our view good riffs are needed, but arrangements skills as well. And never underestimate dynamics, that’s especially where drums come in. But in the end it’s all a matter of writing tracks on feeling. Which comes naturally or from all live perform experience. We tend to combine all those to create the songs we do.

V: 如今极端金属拥有越来越多不同的分支，例如技术死亡金属、黑暗死亡金属、现代死亡金属等。你认为未来死亡金属的发展方向会在哪里？

Extreme metal today has developed into many different branches, including technical death metal, blackened death metal, and modern death metal. Where do you think the future direction of death metal will lead?

D: 很抱歉，我们实在无法预知死亡金属未来会如何演变。

We’re sorry, we couldn’t possibly tell in which way deathmetal tends to evolve in the future.

V: 如果让你用一句话总结Enraged近三十年的音乐旅程，你会如何描述？

If you could summarize Enraged’s nearly three-decade musical journey in one sentence, how would you describe it?

D: 嗯，不妨试试……创作极具冲击力且朗朗上口的死亡金属音乐，同时矢志不渝、坚定执着地向全球推广我们的作品！

Hmm, let’s try… Creating aggressive and catchy deathmetal, while still determined and stubborn propagating our music on a planet scale!

V: 最后，请向中国以及亚洲的金属乐迷介绍Enraged。未来是否有计划来到亚洲演出？

Finally, please introduce Enraged to metal fans in China and across Asia. Are there any plans to perform in Asia in the future?

D: Enraged：一种极致的、冷酷且充满蔑视的愤怒。这种无所顾忌的攻击性转化为极致激烈的死亡金属，并伴随着抨击全球操控与恐惧的愤怒歌词。我们曾发行过一张小样（Demo，1999年的"Tirade"）和两张迷你专辑（MCD，2001年的"Counterblast"和2004年的"Resist Or Serve"）。我们最新的作品是全长专辑"It's Your Fear That Feeds Their Power"（2012年）。这是一张不容错过的专辑，注定要给你的感官带来强烈的震撼。凭借我们打造丰富多变且令人满足的死亡金属编曲的功力，"It's Your Fear That Feeds Their Power"呈现出一种冷酷、激烈且极度暴力的特质，收录了我们迄今为止最狂暴、最极端的曲目！目前暂无在亚洲演出的计划，但未来之事谁也说不准，一切拭目以待。
