Today's interview is with the veteran Italian Heavy / Power Metal band Crying Steel, formed in 1982, Crying Steel is a very popular band in Italy, at the beginning of the band's formation the band released a number of demos, and in 1987 the band released its first official album on Italian label LM Records “On the Prowl”, which received a lot of praise and attention from critics, the shadow of Power Metal. In 2024 the band released their latest live recording “Live and Thunder”, and in 2025 the band is about to release their newest album, the one that all fans of the Heavy / Power Metal genre should be looking forward to in 2025. Magazine got in touch with Crying Steel for an interview!

C: 你们好！首先，我们要向所有的中国观众致以亲切的问候！我们很高兴有机会向中国的金属乐迷们介绍我们自己！之所以选择 “Crying Steel”这个名字，是因为在我们看来，它代表了钢铁在工厂里工作时发出的声音，就像铸造厂一样！

Hi guys ! First of all, we would like to send a very warm greeting to the entire Chinese audience ! We are really excited to have the opportunity to introduce ourselves to the Chinese metalheads! The name 'CRYING STEEL' was chosen because, in our opinion, it represents the sound that steel can make when it's worked in a factory, like a foundry.The result is a steel stuff ,, strong, powerful, resistant to everything... invincible!

We've had several lineup changes over the years, for various reasons... and many Italian musicians have played with Crying Steel. This turnover was caused by different factors... some members stopped playing, others had health issues, and some couldn't continue due to family reasons or too many work commitments. The new members, Paolo Nocchi (guitar) and Marco Zirondelli (bass), were already well-known in the metal scene of our city, so it was easy to think of them for this last, hopefully definitive, lineup change. We are extremely satisfied with their work in the band; they have brought new ideas and fresh energy !

Each of your members are experienced musicians in creating heavy metal, can you describe your creative process?

Our creative process is very simple... it always starts with a guitar riff, to which we add the drums, and then the bass. From there, we work on developing a melody, and once we have an idea for the melody, we continue composing to finish writing the song.

Each of your albums has been outstanding in terms of recording results, which of course has a lot to do with the times, as times have progressed, recording technology has become more versatile, what studios did you all record your albums in? Which producer produced your albums?

I completely agree with you. The evolution of album sales data over the last 15/20 years has been really negative, and it happens to read interviews with well-established bands who honestly admit to having become 't-shirt sellers,' meaning that album sales income has been (only partially, unfortunately) replaced by merchandise sales. On the positive side, it must be said that recording techniques have greatly improved; now you can achieve excellent results even with a home studio, as long as the software is of high quality. In fact, we record in Paolo Nocchi’s home studio, who is very skilled at managing this. We have always self-produced our albums and intend to continue working with this system.

Love, Feelings, Sadness is the theme of your music, why did you choose it and what do you want to express through it? You also wrote the lyrics, who wrote the lyrics and what inspired them?

"Love, feelings, sadness are aspects of life. In fact, in our lyrics, we talk about this, but not only that. Luca (drums), who is the author of all the lyrics, is also a big fan of everything related to science fiction (especially the Marvel universe), so there are also songs that deal with this theme, especially in the album coming out this year."

Your band called it quits in 1990 and didn't reform until 2003, what made you call it quits? And what made you get back together and reform the band?

"Good question! Yes, in 1990, two members of the band decided to leave for different reasons: the singer because he was no longer interested in singing, and the guitarist (and co-founder of the band) Alberto Simonini because he wanted to move to Los Angeles and try to break into the music business there. At that point, we also started alternative projects in different musical genres (including cover bands)." Then Alberto returned from Los Angeles, and in the meantime, some Italian promoters asked us to reunite the original lineup for a few concerts, which went very well because the fans hadn't forgotten about us! A record label offered us a new contract... It was something unpredictable and completely unexpected! At that point, we decided to go back to the studio and write new songs together.

Your band has released new albums with a number of labels, how did you get in touch with these labels to work together? Are you satisfied with the work of these labels?

Well, yes, we’ve released our albums with different labels each time (only 'Steel is Back' and 'Time Stand Steel' were released by the same label), and they all had the same problem: the distribution of the CD was not at an acceptable level (naturally, now we mainly talk about digital distribution, and the situation is different) because many fans would write to us complaining that they couldn't find the CD in stores.

Crying Steel was one of the greatest bands of the Italian underground in the 80s. A superb and very powerful example of heavy metal music. We can feel Power Metal in your compositions. The speed is fast, which is mainly related to the bass drum. The riffs are melodic and at the same time extremely fast, retaining a hard rock style with just the right amount of heaviness. The vocals are melodic and all quite high pitched.

WOW!!! We’re happy to hear these beautiful words from you!! This is exactly what we try to do! Simple but impactful guitar riffs, inspired by hard rock as well, not just metal (after all, our first influences were hard rock bands from the '70s and '80s), along with a solid rhythm section and great attention to vocal melodies, which are fundamental to us!

V: 作为一支经验丰富的乐队，你参加过很多音乐节，哪些音乐节给你留下了深刻的印象，你能描述一下2025年你被邀请参加的气氛和其他音乐节吗？2024年你发布了一张现场录音专辑时，你被邀参加了哪些其他音乐节，这是你参加的那个音乐节的现场录音吗？

As a veteran band you've played a lot of festivals, what festivals have impressed you and can you describe the atmosphere and what other festivals you've been invited to in 2025, and what other festivals have you been invited to in 2024, when you released an album of live recordings, and this is a live recording from that festival you played?

C: 当然，给我们印象最深的节日是2014年的Wacken。多么难以置信的经历啊！这是一台完美的机器，一级方程式赛车的节日！非常专业，完美的组织，大约有3000人在尖叫！（你可以在YouTube上观看视频）。"Live&Thunder"专辑于2022年在意大利巡演期间录制，我们称之为“40 years of Thundergods”，在那里我们庆祝了40年的活动。这张专辑于2024年发行。2025年，我们已经确定参加巴尔干金属会议和帕多瓦金属节，我们正在就其他节日进行其他谈判。

Surely, the festival that impressed us the most was Wacken in 2014. What an incredible experience! It’s a perfect machine, the Formula 1 of festivals ! Very professional, perfect organization, and about 3,000 people screamin’! (You can watch the video on YouTube). The 'Live & Thunder' album was recorded in 2022 during the Italian tour we called '40 years of Thundergods,' where we celebrated 40 years of activity. The album was then released in 2024. In 2025, we are already confirmed for the Balkan Metal Meeting and the Padova Metal Fest, and we have other ongoing negotiations for additional festivals.

V: 2025年你还有什么计划？比如创作、录制一些新歌，你能向大家们透露一些信息吗？我真的很期待你的新专辑的发行！

What else do you have going on in 2025? Like writing, recording some new songs, can you reveal some information to people? I'm really looking forward to the release of your new album!
