Today I interviewed Shardana, a black metal band from Italy. The band was founded in 2008 and was initially influenced by various styles, releasing their debut EP 'Shardana'. Subsequently, the band released albums "No cadena, no presoni, no spada, no lei" in 2014 and "Milli Annos" in 2020. Both albums retain the melodic characteristics of the band, while the music is also very passionate. In 2025, after transforming into Epic Black Metal, the band will release a new album titled 'The Monarch'. Therefore, we contacted the band for an exclusive interview.

Hello Shardana, thank you for accepting this interview. Could you give us a brief introduction to the development of Shardana first?

A: 嗨，谢谢你邀请我们！乐队成立于2008年，最初由四人组成。我们最初受到不同流派的影响，如Power, Thrash, Folk和Black Metal。我演奏贝斯和声乐，但随着岁月的流逝，我感觉只需要专注于人声。与此同时作为一个自然在这个过程中，我们从最初的声音变成了Blackened Death Metal 风格，同时又不失我们对旋律的品味。

Hi, thank you for having us! The band started in 2008 as a four-piece. We were initially influenced by different genres like power, thrash, folk and black metal. I played bass and vocals, but as years passed, I felt the need to focus only on vocals. In the meantime, as a natural process, we switched from the sound of our beginnings to a blackened death metal style, without losing our taste in melodies.

V: .我注意到你们今年九月份就要发行新专辑。你能不能给我们介绍一下这张新专辑吗？那么这张专辑和之前的专辑有什么区别吗？

I noticed that you will release a new album in September this year. Could you introduce this new album to us? And what are the differences between this album and your previous ones?

Our previous record, “Milli Annos” suffered that our new entries at the time in the band, Lorenzo and Luca, had less space to give their contribution to the album. “The Monarch” reflects our new lineup perfectly, which sees Federico as our new drummer. We tried a more modern approach to our songs, especially on melodies and clean vocals. We recorded everything at Lorenzo’s Overcore Studio, who also took care of the production along with Daniele and the mix, while Audiosiege Studio (Portland, U.S.) mastered the record. We are really satisfied with the result!

I really like the cover of "The Monarch", it gives a sense of oppression. How was it designed? Does it represent anything?

We are glad you like it, and you got our intention! It's a terrific piece of art by GimboDerk, an artist that immediately embraced our concept for the album and proposed that image for the cover. Speaking of what the cover represents, the huge creature in the front is “The Monarch of Time”. Time is the ruler of our lives, and this record is the celebration of the struggle of humans against it. It’s not a concept album, but most of the songs are about the passing of time, and struggles of humanity against our decay, despite the fact we can’t win.

Do you think "The Monarch" is different from your previous works? Is it an innovation or a continuation of the previous Shardana?

I think every record it’s a frame of what Shardana is at that moment. Milli Annos was a transition album between what we were and what we wanted to be, while The Monarch is exactly what we wanted to express now with our music. No compromises, no distractions or external contaminations. Just our view 100%.

V: 你们的主题是和Shardana有关的历史和文化，你们为什么选择这个主题呢，你们又讲了哪些故事呢？能和我们聊聊吗？

Your theme is the history and culture related to Shardana. Why did you choose this theme? What stories have you told? Could you share them with us?

This is not our only theme, but we still think it’s important to share our history and folklore. our land Sardinia is literally between Africa and Europe. Our ancient and modern history intertwines with every culture who crossed the mediterranean sea. To name a few, in our early years we sang about the Shardana, a “sea folk” who were the personal guard of Pharaoh Ramesses II. In Milli Annos we told about the rebellion from the Roman Republic by Sardinian, helped by the Carthaginian Empire. Those topics are a perfect suit for our music

V: 你们之前参加过什么让你们印象深刻的演出吗？之后又会又有什么演出计划呢？

Have you participated in any performances that left a deep impression on you before? What performance plans do you have for the future?

A: 每一场音乐会对我们来说都是独特而有趣的，但我们很自豪能拥有在2019年的摇滚音乐节上支持Marduk，这是他们的第一次在撒丁岛露面。你知道吗，我们真的很喜欢大舞台表演，尤其是当一切顺利的时候！

Every concert is unique and fun for us, but we were proud to have supported Marduk at the Rock'n'Boll Festival in 2019, their first appearance in Sardinia. You know, we really like big stage performances, especially when everything went great!

Could you talk about your favorite band or the band that has had a great influence on you?

As a singer, I’ve always been influenced by bands with charismatic voices, especially when they are both melodic and aggressive. If I have to choose one, I have to say Blind Guardian. Hansi kursch singing work in Imaginations… and Nightfall… was incredible! I love every record they made, but those two records are the top!
