时空缩影 - 芬兰Death Metal乐队Refusal专访

今天采访到的是来自芬兰的Deat Metal乐队Refusal，组建于2008年的Refusal乐队由Tero和他的哥哥Timo组建，很快鼓手Aleksi，吉他手Sophie以及Timo的朋友Niikka担任主唱加入乐队，Refusal这个名字是来自巴西Krisiun乐队的一首歌曲命名，随着乐队稳定了阵容，乐队也开始了创作，2008 -2013年年乐队发行了多张作品获得好评，2016年乐队与来自德国的F.D.A. Today's interview is with Finnish Deat Metal band Refusal, formed in 2008 by Tero and his brother Timo, soon joined by Aleksi on drums, Sophie on guitar and Timo's friend Niikka on vocals, Refusal is named after a song by Brazilian band Krisiun. Refusal was named after a song by the Brazilian band Krisiun, and as the band stabilized their lineup, they began to write, releasing a number of critically acclaimed works from 2008-2013, and in 2016 the band teamed up with German label F.D.A. Records to release their first official album, “We Rot Within”, a tight, urgent, and powerful album. “We Rot Within” is a tight, urgent, crushing Based Riff filled with frenzied, chaotic patterns, but sometimes supplemented by more traditional rhythms. These rhythms convey a more expansive sense of space within the tight melodies, and despite the many high-speed, up-tempo sections, maintain a frenetic sense of speed and aggression, but the contrast between the two is quite pronounced, creating a unique diversity of atmospheres for the tracks, rather than just simply crushing them, with not much difference between the tracks. Bringing deafening drums and blitzkrieg-style riffing into a wave of intense melodies, the bass and drums serve as the foundation for a tight, frenzied grinding rhythm that eventually shifts into a sharp tempo, with tight motifs and scattered rhythms complementing the bursting drums, moving into a steady mid-tempo tempo with vicious rhythmic bursts in the last half of the album, after the success of the first release, the band After the success of their first album, the band released their second album “Epitome of Void” in 2019, which was released on Great Dane Records in France, and received even more critical acclaim, and became the subject of an invitation to major festivals, and this year the band released their second album on Time to Kill Records in Italy. Hello Tero nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview, I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, first of all say hello to all the Chinese fans, Refusal was formed in 2008 and is a band with a long history, who suggested to form this band in the first place, and what is the meaning of the name Refusal?

T: 乐队是我和我哥哥Timo组建的。我们在网上寻找鼓手，很快就找到了打鼓的Aleksi。我们还在网上找到了另一位吉他手（Sophie）。Timo让他的朋友Niikka担任主唱。乐队以Krisiun的歌曲“Refusal”命名。这个名字没有更深的含义，我们只是想取一个简短易记的名字。

The band was started by myself and my brother Timo. We searched online for a drummer and got Aleksi to play drums quite quickly. We also found another guitarist (Sophie) online. Timo got his friend Niikka to do vocals. The band is named after Krisiun’s song “Refusal”. It has no deeper meaning; we just wanted some short and easily to remembered name.

V: 们乐队在2018 - 2023年有了新的吉他手和主唱，为什么第一代成员退出了乐队？Juhani Paasipohja是如何加入乐队的？

Your band has a new guitarist and singer for 2018 - 2023, why did the first generation members quit the band? How did Juhani Paasipohja join the band and are you happy with the new members?

T: 乐队阵容的变化都是个别事件，有着不同的深层原因。在Niikka决定离开乐队后，我们一直在考虑如何寻找新的主唱。我们决定在互联网上公开寻找。有几个人参加了试唱，但最后我们选择了Juhani，他的声音很好听，似乎很适合我们的团队。

The lineup changes were all individual events with different underlying reasons. After Niikka decided to leave the band, we were wondering how to proceed with the search for a new vocalist. We decided to put out a public search on the internet. Several people auditioned, but in the end we ended up with Juhani, who sounded good and seemed to fit in with our group.

V: 你们每个成员都是创作Death Metal的资深音乐家，能描述一下创作过程吗？我相信你们的创作经验会激励更多的年轻音乐家！

Each of you members are experienced musicians in creating death metal, can you describe the creative process? I'm sure your creative experience will inspire more young musicians!

T: 我们的创作过程通常是从我、Timo或Kalle开始创作一首歌曲的基础，然后发给其他人听。如果歌曲听起来不错，我们就在排练中尝试。通歌曲会在排练室里进行大幅修改。当歌曲结构准备就绪或基本准备就绪时，Juhani就开始创作歌词。

Our composition process usually starts with me, Timo or Kalle creating the basis of a song, which is sent to others to listen to. If the song sounds good enough, we try it out in our rehearsals. Often the songs are greatly modified in the rehearsal room. When the structure is ready or almost ready, Juhani starts working on the lyrics.

V: 你们每张专辑的录制效果都很出色，你们都是在哪个录音室录制专辑的？哪位制作人制作了你们的专辑？你们的新专辑即将发行，新专辑的录制过程如何？

Each of your albums have been amazing in terms of recording results, what studio did you all record your albums in? Which producer produced your albums? You have a new album coming out soon, how is the recording process going for this new album?

All our albums have been produced by ourselves. The first album (We Rot Within) was recorded in D-studio (drums and guitar re-amping). Everything else was recorded by us. The album was mixed by Joiku Harmaja, who had worked with our demos earlier. Our second album (Epitome of Void) was recorded in Finnvox (drums) and at our rehearsal room (everything else). This album was mixed and mastered by our then-vocalist Niikka. The new upcoming album (Venomous Human Concept) was recorded in Studio Kolotila (drums and partly guitar re-amping) and at our rehearals room (guitars, re-amping, vocals, bass). This album was mixed in Studio Kolotila by Olli Nokkala and mastering was done by Henri Sorvali.

Society is your musical theme, why did you choose this musical theme and what do you want to express through this musical theme? You also wrote the lyrics, who wrote the lyrics and what inspired them?

T: 我们第一张专辑的歌词主要是由Niikka创作的，但Timo也写了一些歌词。写歌词时，歌词的主题自然而然就出现了。在新专辑中歌词更多的是从个人的角度，一个局外人的角度出发。主题从社会延伸到当前影响整个世界的政治和地缘政治动荡。

For our two first albums lyrics were written mostly by Niikka, but Timo did some lyrics also. The lyrical themes came naturally when writing them. For the new album, lyrics are more from viewpoint of an individual, an outsider looking in. Themes extend from society to political and geopolitical turmoil that is currently affecting the whole world.

V: 你们的Logo设计非常简单，但这种设计形式是我个人最喜欢的设计形式，是谁为你们设计了这个Logo？你们的专辑封面设计非常独特，是谁为你们设计的？

Your logo design is very simple, but this design form is my personal favorite design form, who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork is very unique, who designed this album artwork for you?

T: 这个Logo是Niikka画的。我想他的灵感来自Rotten Sound的标志。即将发行的专辑的封面设计由Sakari Vinko完成。

The logo was drawn by Niikka. I think his inspiration was Rotten Sound’s logo. Artwork for upcoming album was made by Sakari Vinko.

V: 你们曾与Time to Kill Records、F.D.A. Records、Great Dane Records等唱片公司合作发行过专辑... 这些厂牌都是非常优秀的厂牌... 你是如何与这些厂牌取得联系并合作的？

You have released albums with Time to Kill Records, F.D.A. Records, Great Dane Records... These are all very good labels... How did you get in touch and work with these labels?

T: 当我们完全准备好专辑时，我们向不同的唱片公司发送了信息。我们从这些唱片公司拿到了当时最合适的合约。我们对所有合作过的唱片公司都很满意。

When we had album completely ready, we sent messages to different labels. We got the most suitable contracts from these record companies at the time. We have been happy with all the labels we have worked with.

First of all, congratulations to your band for their upcoming release of a new album, which has produced a thunderous and aggressive music. The sound is raw and powerful, injecting enough dirt into the music, but at the same time clear and singular. Most of your melodies are very direct and only deviate from the main melody in special circumstances. There are many similarities with famous European bands such as Bolt Thrower and Bendection, as well as many unforgettable melodies that showcase one's own ideas and give music a unique personality. Your iconic chords are very heavy, and the rhythms of all songs are quite fast, but there are also some parts with a strong sense of rhythm. These slower parts and some dark sound sampling are very suitable for creating a sinister atmosphere. Before the main melody resumes, these parts are often accompanied by exciting solos. The drummer's drumming is very precise, able to easily maintain rhythm, fullness, but without appearing chaotic. The singer's singing is top-notch, full of strength and passion. Do you have any opinions on your own works? Is there any change between the new album and the old album?

T: 对自己的音乐很难有客观的评价。就我个人而言我觉得我们每张专辑都比前一张更好。

It's very difficult to be objective with your own music. Personally, I've felt that we've been better with each album than the one before.

A: 我们的音乐从早期的Thrash Metal到Grindcore影响的Death Metal。我认为我们的新专辑包含了更多Old Schhool Death Metal元素。歌曲的长度更长一些，专辑中的歌曲也有变化和动态变化。

Our music has involved from early days thrash metal to grindcore influenced death metal. I would say our new album includes more old school death metal elements. Songs are a bit longer and there are variations and dynamic changes during the album.

V: 作为一支老牌乐队，你们参加过很多音乐节。哪些音乐节给你们留下了深刻的印象？能否介绍一下当时的现场气氛？2025年是否还有其他音乐节邀请你们参加？

As an old band, you have participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? Are there any other music festivals in 2025 that invite you to participate?

T: 对我来说，最近一次音乐节（Furyfest，2024年11月，赫尔辛基）令人难忘。我们为很多人表演了一场精彩的演出。到目前为止2025年还没有任何音乐节。

For me the latest festival (Furyfest, November 2024 in Helsinki) was memorable. We played a good show for nice amount of people. So far no festivals booked for 2025.

P: 2016年的Grind the Nazi Scum音乐节让我印象深刻。场地、环境和观众都很棒！

Grind the Nazi Scum 2016 festival was very memorable for me. The venue, setting and people were awesome!

V: 作为一支经典老牌乐队，我一直在关注你们乐队。通过你们的三张正式专辑，我会继续支持和关注你们的乐队。我也希望通过这次采访，吸引更多的中国乐迷关注和支持你们的乐队。最后，你有什么想对中国歌迷说的吗？

As a classic veteran band, I have been following your band all along. Through your three official albums, I will continue to support and follow your band. I also hope to attract more Chinese fans to follow and support your band through this interview. Do you have anything to say to your Chinese fans in the end?

T: 我希望伟大的中国人民会喜欢我们的新专辑。新专辑将于2025年6月以实体格式和所有主要流媒体服务发行。

I hope that great people of China will find our new album great. It will be out in June 2025 in physical formats and in all major streaming services.
