The band I interviewed today is Necrotic Vortex, a Death Metal band from Portugal. Melkor, who is still an old friend of the magazine, formed an Old School Death Metal band by himself. This album does not have much technical skills, but it is a primitive, rough, and evil work. Melkor's voice also gives people a gloomy and terrifying feeling. If you are a fan of the dark Death Metal style, please pay attention to the works of Necrotic Vortex. This album was still recorded by Melkor alone, mixed, and released on his own label. At the time of the release of the new album, the founder of the band Melkor contacted the magazine again. I had an exclusive interview!

Hello Melkor, it's nice to see you again. This time, I'm going to interview the band you formed called Necrotic Vortex, which is a very young band. How did you form this band?

Thank you, it's always a pleasure. Necrotic Vortex came to life as a pure outlet for old school death metal filth, raw, uncompromising, and stripped of all modern gloss. I formed the band driven by a need to channel something more primal and decayed. The idea had been festering in my mind for a while, and once the concept crystallized, a vortex of death, rot and spiritual collapse, everything else followed naturally. I took charge of the entire process: writing, recording, producing, and crafting the sonic and visual identity. It's not about trends or technical showmanship, it's about capturing the stench of death itself.

Is this band still formed by yourself or are there other members joining this band?

Necrotic Vortex is primarily my creation, I handled everything from the ground up: songwriting, guitars, bass, vocals, drums, lyrics, production, mixing, and mastering. It was a solitary descent into madness, and I wanted full control to ensure the sound was as rotten and unforgiving as I envisioned. But once the foundation was laid and the album was nearly complete, I felt that something was missing, that final, venomous edge. That’s when I invited Jorge Matos to join and unleash his furious solos. His contributions added the perfect layer of chaos and intensity, like a rusted blade slicing through decaying flesh, the final touch that completed the vortex.

The recording effect of this band is very excellent, are you still recording albums in your own studio?

Yes, I record all the albums exclusively in my own studio, I don’t see the need to go anywhere else. That space is where I shape the sound exactly how I envision it, with full control over every detail. The only time I would consider any change is if I felt the need to upgrade my gear, and when that moment comes, I’ll simply invest in more equipment, because I want to keep everything within my studio. That said, some contributions do come from outside. For example, Jorge Matos recorded his solos in his personal studio and then sent them to me. I made sure to treat the sound with care, respecting his preferences in terms of distortion and effects, so that everything blended perfectly within the brutal atmosphere of Necrotic Vortex.

V: 你能介绍一下这张专辑的创作过程吗？

Can you introduce the creative process of this album?

M: 这张专辑的创作过程与我的其他作品完全不同。几年前，应乐队主唱的要求，我最初为我的一个乐队写了这些歌曲。这个想法是使用经典的HM-2踏板音色来制作一些东西，以捕捉那种坚韧不拔的Entomb般的氛围。然而，随着时间的推移，情况发生了变化，最初的计划没有按预期进行。我最终与他讨论了在新的愿景下使用这些曲目进行个人发布的问题，他完全支持这个想法。所以我从头开始重新录制一切，为歌曲注入新的活力，并将其塑造成完全符合我自己的艺术方向。从那时起，这个过程变得非常自然、直观和快速。我按照正确的顺序录制了每首曲目，使专辑的流程有机地结合在一起。

This album had quite a different creative process compared to my other works. A few years ago, I originally wrote these songs for a band of mine, at the request of that band's vocalist. The idea was to craft something using the classic HM-2 pedal tone, to capture that gritty Entombed-like atmosphere. However, over time, things changed and the original plan didn’t go forward as expected. I eventually spoke with him about using those tracks for a personal release under a new vision, and he was completely supportive of the idea. So I re-recorded everything from scratch, breathing new life into the songs and shaping them to fully align with my own artistic direction. From there, the process became very natural, intuitive, and quite fast. I recorded each track in the right order, allowing the flow of the album to come together organically.

The logo design of this band is very beautiful. Is this logo your own design achievement? The album artwork design is also very beautiful. Did you design this artwork yourself?

M: 是的，Logo和艺术品都是我设计的。当谈到Logo时，我想捕捉到Old School Death Metal时代那种原始、简约的风格，比如Obituary、death、Vader等乐队。我没有故意花太多时间在上面；不需要华丽或过于复杂的元素。它必须直接、大胆、易于辨认，就像音乐本身一样。

Yes, both the logo and the artwork were designed by me. When it came to the logo, I wanted to capture that raw, stripped-down simplicity of the old-school death metal era, bands like Obituary, Death, Vader, and so on. I didn’t spend too much time on it intentionally; there was no need for flourishes or overcomplicated elements. It had to be direct, bold, and instantly recognizable, much like the music itself. As for the artwork, I followed the same philosophy. I aimed to create something visceral, bleak, and evocative without relying on digital gloss or excessive detail. It had to reflect the themes of decay, damnation, and brutality in a way that felt organic and true to the old-school spirit. Every visual element was chosen to support the atmosphere of the music, a cold, suffocating vortex where beauty decays with everything else.

V: 你的音乐主题是什么，你为什么选择这样的音乐主题，你想通过选择最好的音乐主题来表达什么？你还创建了歌词部分。是什么启发了这些歌词？

What is your music theme about, why did you choose such a music theme, and what do you want to express through selecting the best music theme? You also created the lyrics section. What inspired these lyrics?

M:Necrotic Vortex背后的主题深深植根于腐朽、精神诅咒和死亡的必然性。我选择这种主题方向是因为它给人一种诚实的感觉，面对存在的黑暗面有一种令人难以置信的原始和真实。这不是赞美痛苦，而是将其作为一种普遍而不可避免的力量进行探索。死亡是伟大的均衡器，通过这首音乐，我将这种想法转化为声音和文字。是的，我也写了所有的歌词。他们来自一个内省、恐怖和哲学反思的地方，深受Old School Death Metal场景的影响。一些歌词的灵感来自生动的梦境，另一些则来自孤独的令人不安的沉默或肉体与腐烂的象征性意象。我写作不仅仅是为了震惊，我写作是为了引发反应，通过文字和即兴重复段让人们感受到存在的重量。每首歌词都是为了把听众困在一个摇摇欲坠的世界里，在这个世界里没有救赎，只有一切最终都会腐烂的事实。对我来说，这是Old School Death Metal的纯粹精髓。

The themes behind Necrotic Vortex are deeply rooted in decay, spiritual damnation, and the inevitability of death. I chose this kind of thematic direction because it feels honest, there’s something incredibly raw and real about confronting the darker aspects of existence. It’s not about glorifying suffering, but rather exploring it as a universal and unavoidable force. Death is the great equalizer, and through this music, I channel that idea into sound and words. Yes, I wrote all the lyrics as well. They came from a place of introspection, horror, and philosophical reflection, heavily influenced by the old-school death metal scene. Some lyrics were inspired by vivid dreams, others by the disturbing silence of isolation or the symbolic imagery of flesh and rot. I don’t write just to shock, I write to provoke a reaction, to make people feel the weight of existence through words as much as through riffs. Each lyric is meant to trap the listener inside a crumbling world where there’s no salvation, just the truth that everything eventually decays. That, to me, is the pure essence of old-school death metal.

V: 你仍然选择以自己的品牌发行这张专辑吗？

Do you still choose to release this album on your own label?

M: 说实话，我最近接受了膝盖手术，我的恢复很慢。知道接下来会发生什么，在我康复期间，我已经为发行大约三张专辑做好了充分的准备。我知道我没有耐心或身心能量去寻找标签、跟上电子邮件并及时回复。因此，我提前设置了所有内容，包括新闻稿、卷轴、帖子，所有这些都可以在适当的时间发送或分享到社交媒体上。现在，我仍在恢复中，但我已经恢复了足够的精力来处理许多任务，甚至已经恢复了录音。我还可以分享，有一家葡萄牙唱片公司对这张专辑的实体发行感兴趣。然而，如果发生这种情况，那将需要相当长的时间，这并不困扰我，因为这是我信任的一个诚实的标签。目前，我继续独立发布。

To be honest, I recently underwent knee surgery and my recovery has been slow. Knowing what was ahead, I already had about three albums fully prepared to release while I was recovering. I knew I wouldn’t have the patience or the physical and mental energy to search for a label, keep up with emails, and respond promptly. So, I set everything in advance, press releases, reels, posts, all ready to be sent or shared on social media at the right time. Right now, I’m still recovering, but I’ve regained enough energy to handle many tasks and have even returned to recording. I can also share that there is a Portuguese label interested in doing a physical release of this album. However, if that happens, it will take quite some time, which doesn’t bother me because it’s an honest label I trust. For now, I continue to release independently.

First of all, congratulations on the release of your new album this year. It is a dark and evil Old School Death Metal work, and the dark Riff perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the entire album. Coupled with the enhancement of bass, your work highlights melody and is more ornamental. Your voice is low, powerful, evil, and perfectly matches your music. What is your opinion on your own work?

M: 非常感谢您的溢美之词和详细的赞赏。我在这张专辑中投入了很多自己的东西，听到气氛、即兴重复段、低音和人声如我所愿地融合在一起，这对我来说意义重大。对我来说，这部作品是对老派死亡金属精神的真诚致敬，原始、残酷，但带有一丝旋律，增添了深度和情感，我为低音线如何在不压倒即兴重复段的情况下补充即兴重复段而感到自豪，从而创造出更有质感的声音。我的发声方式正是我想要的：深沉、有力、有威胁性，完美地契合了主题。总的来说，我认为这张专辑真实地反映了我对这一类型的愿景和热情，我对最终的结果非常满意。

Thank you very much for the kind words and the detailed appreciation. I put a lot of myself into this album, and it means a lot to hear that the atmosphere, riffs, bass, and vocals come together as I intended. For me, this work is a sincere tribute to the old school death metal spirit, raw, brutal, but with a touch of melody to add depth and emotion. I’m proud of how the bass lines complement the riffs without overpowering them, creating a more textured sound. My vocal approach was exactly what I wanted: deep, powerful, and menacing, fitting the themes perfectly. Overall, I see this album as a true reflection of my vision and passion for the genre, and I’m very satisfied with the final result.

V: 这张专辑发行后，你有什么新计划？

What new plans do you have after the release of this album?

M: 很简单：录制另一张专辑。哈哈哈！老实说，一旦我完成一张专辑，我的思绪就会立刻转移到下一张。创作过程从未真正停止。我已经在为接下来的内容创作新的即兴重复段、主题和想法。每一个版本都只是向前迈出了一步，我想在保持原始的老派死亡金属氛围的同时，继续进一步推动声音。除此之外，我计划继续完善我的制作技巧，尝试不同的色调和分层技术，以进一步加深氛围。我也会考虑合作，尤其是当它能为音乐带来新的视角或新的活力时。所以这个计划很简单：继续创造，继续进化，继续通过Necrotic Vortex提供残酷、不妥协的Death Metal。

Very simple: record another album... hahaha! Honestly, once I finish one album, my mind immediately shifts to the next. The creative process never really stops. I’m already working on new riffs, themes, and ideas for what comes next. Each release is just a step forward, and I want to keep pushing the sound further while staying true to that raw, old school death metal vibe. Besides that, I plan to keep refining my production skills, experimenting with different tones and layering techniques to deepen the atmosphere even more. Collaboration is also something I’d consider, especially when it can bring a fresh perspective or new energy to the music. So the plan is straightforward: keep creating, keep evolving, and continue delivering brutal, uncompromising death metal through Necrotic Vortex.
