生命启示录 - 英国Black / Death Metal乐队Sathamel专访

今天采访到的是来自英国的Black / Death Metal乐队Sathamel，2013年组建的Sathamel乐队也是一支老牌的乐队了，其实乐队在2012年就已经组建了，最初取名为Sheol并且在2013年发行了一张Demo作品，最后乐队防止和其他乐队重名选择在2013年更名为Sathamel，更名不久之后乐队发行了他们的第一张EP专辑“Sathamel”，这张EP专辑给所有歌迷留下了深刻印象，残暴的鼓点，优美的旋律，阴暗的氛围会让你想起Behemoth和Vader这类波兰的乐队，这张EP发行大获成功之后乐队也发行了多张作品，2019年乐队的第一张正式专辑“Horror Vacui”发行，依旧还是一张经典Black / Death Metal作品，今年乐队也刚刚发布了他们的最新EP专辑“Opposition to Life”，在新专辑发行之际乐队也与杂志取得联系进行了一次专访！

Today's interview is with Sathamel, a Black / Death Metal band from the UK. Formed in 2013, Sathamel is a veteran band that started out in 2012 as Sheol and released a demo in 2013, but the band changed their name to Sathamel in 2013 to prevent renaming themselves after other bands. In 2013 the band changed their name to Sathamel, shortly after the name change the band released their first EP ‘Sathamel’, which impressed all their fans with its brutal drums, beautiful melodies and dark atmosphere that reminds you of Behemoth and Vader. The EP was a huge success and the band has released many more albums since then. 2019 saw the release of the band's first official album ‘Horror Vacui’, which is still a classic Black / Death Metal album, and this year the band has just released their latest EP! The band also just released their latest EP ‘Opposition to Life’ this year, and on the occasion of the release of the new album the band got in touch with the magazine for an interview!

Hello, members of Sathamel Band. Nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time for your band to be interviewed by China magazine. First of all, I would like to say hello to the fans in China. Sathamel Band was founded in 2013. Who proposed to form this band?

S: 是的，我们相信这也是我们第一次在中国被报道，谢谢。乐队的组建是一个很自然的过程。最初我们的成员有各种不同的合作项目，但从完整的现场阵容来看，并不像一个真正的乐队，到了后来个人项目最终都解散了，于是我们决定组建乐队，开始一起创作和排练。

Yes we believe it is our first time being covered in China too, thank you. The formation of the band was quite a natural process, originally the members had various separate projects we were working on together, but nothing resembling a "real band" in terms of full live lineup. It came to a stage where individual projects eventually dissolved and through that we decided to form the band and begin writing and rehearsing together.

V: 事实上你们的乐队早在2012年就成立了。当时你们被命名为Sheol，2013年更名为 Sathamel，是什么原因让你们改名的？

In fact, your band was established as early as 2012. At that time, you were named Sheol, and in 2013, it was renamed as Sathamel. What made you change your name?

S: 没错，我们改名只是为了避免与其他同名乐队混淆。我们不想在乐队名称后面加上 “UK”、“A.D/ B.C ”之类的字样，因为有时会出现一些更为成熟的乐队名称纠纷。在我们职业生涯的早期，我们就应该减少损失，重新开始。

Yes that is correct, we changed the name simply to avoid confusion with other bands with the same name. We did not want to add "UK" "A.D/ B.C" or whatever, to the end of the moniker as sometimes is seen with far more established band's name disputes. It was a case of it being early enough in our career to cut our losses and start afresh.

Now only the singer Daniel Kalinowski and guitarist Nathan Caven are the first generation members of the band, and the other members were changed in 2023. What made the first generation members quit the band and how did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the work of the new members?

Many of our ex-members have moved onto different projects or times of their lives, we wish them all the best with their endeavours. The most previous lineup shift, the pandemic was a large factor, and caused a re-evaluation of priorities in life, generally for people. In terms of Sathamel of today - we publicly announced the "reformation" last year in 2023, and began to work on rebuilding the band almost immediately, both in the studio and live. We are now set to release the culmination of this so far with our new EP "Opposition to Life". We are proud of this material and hope that this resonates with the audience.

Every member of your band is an experienced musician who creates extreme metals. Can you talk about your creative process? I believe that your creative experience will inspire many young musicians.

Generally it will come from an idea being presented to the group - Nathan (Guitars) and/ or Pat (Guitars) will put together recordings of passages they have written and demo recorded, together or separately, at home and present these to the group. This could range from a riff idea to a fully fledged instrumental version of a song. The music will then go through a series of changes as we feel is needed, and bounced multiple times and iterations/ revisions between us; until we reach our final "instrumental version". Dan then begins the lyric writing and vocal structure process. This allows us to dig further into the arrangements and tailor the song to best compliment the vocal flow, if necessary. Michael (Drums) and Dale (Bass) will sketch out their parts to give and idea on the dynamics for the demo recording. Once we have this "fleshed out" idea, it is not until studio time where the final product is fully realised. We take time to look into, and amend, each instrument's parts during the studio sessions. A great example of this is with the lead single "Take the Rot" - our demo version pales in comparison to the final product. The changes in dynamics were fully down to Michael choosing to vary the beats dramatically when sat behind his drum kit in the studio, which drove the song in a more powerful direction compared to was on the demo "scratch" recording.

Each of your albums has excellent recording effect. In which studio did you record the albums? Who produced the album for you?

Our main body of work, since our self-titled 2015 EP; we have worked with Samuel Turbitt at Ritual Sound Studio. Over the years Sam has become a great friend and we trust him wholeheartedly with our material. He offers a good level of critique, knowledge and experience (not to mention banter) each time we work with him and feel he gets the best out of us - as well as being an absolute monster in terms of production. Occultism, Anti-religion are your music themes. Why do you choose such a music theme? What do you want to express through such a musical theme? You also created the lyrics. Who wrote these lyrics and what inspired them?

Anti-religion is an easy target for a young band within the Black/ Death genre, in our formative years. These days the lyrical work is far more mature and introspective, and looks towards the darker elements of human/ spiritual nature. Dan writes the lyrics and more recently have taken on a nature of observation with the darker spiritual edge in mind - viewing the state of humanity, mental health, as well as personal triumphs, failings and overcoming adversity.

You signed an album with Blackwood Productions in the UK, and all the other albums are digital versions released by yourself. How did you get in touch with Blackwood Productions to cooperate with you? Are you satisfied with their work? Have any of your other albums ever been released on CD under a regular label?

The release through Blackwood Productions was a short run of tapes, we were not signed. This was a sound desk recording of our appearance at a festival named, at the time "The Blackwood Gathering" in 2015, which took place yearly in October at Fell Foot Wood, Cumbria, not far from Lake Windemere. It was a limited run through this distribution and was nod to this time in history for the band. Headlined by Urfaust that year; Fond memories of the great atmosphere and event as a whole. In terms of releases on labels, it is something we've been open to and offered, but have yet to find the fit.

First of all, congratulations on your release of the latest single "Ad Nauseam" this year. The core of the album is rooted in a very sinister death metal sound. This magnificent quality-created by playing selected repetitive segments of tuning and vibrato on the pounding drums-runs through the whole album, reminiscent of bands such as Behemoth and Vader. I was deeply impressed by the heavy drums and some amazing skills. The guitar solo runs through. Generally speaking, your works are excellent. What do you think of your works? Is there any change between the new album and the old one?

Thank you, Ad Nauseam is one of 5 tracks on our newest effort "Opposition to Life". We are proud of what we have achieved on this release and it serves as a statement of the beginnings of what is to come, a natural progression.

What work does your band have to do in 2024? You released the latest single, can I take it that the new album is coming soon? Can you tell us some information?

As the previous question, we will release our newest EP entitled "Opposition to Life" on November 1st 2024. The track-list is as follows: "Take the Rot" - "O, War" - "Perennial Flock" - "Ad Nauseam" - "Opposition to Life" "Opposition to Life" was recorded, mixed and mastered by Samuel Turbitt at Ritual Sound Studios. We're looking forward to finally releasing this entirely. We will embark on a small number of shows to celebrate this release around the UK, hitting Bristol, Cardiff and Leeds. We then will set our sights on 2025.

V: 你们乐队参加过很多音乐节，哪些音乐节给你们留下了深刻的印象？能介绍一下当时的气氛吗？2024年还会受邀参加哪些音乐节？

Your band participated in many music festivals, and which ones left a deep impression on you. Can you introduce the atmosphere at that time? What other music festivals will you be invited to attend in 2024?

2024 is almost over now, with that in mind we have been planning 2025 and looking to expand our horizons. This year in 2024 we made our debut in Ireland on a short run of successful dates with our friends in Sacred Noose. We would relish the opportunity to travel overseas, perhaps. In terms of festivals, we had the honour of performing at Bloodstock Open Air this summer in August on the New Blood Stage. We were grateful for the opportunity to perform at this festival which is one of the highlights of the UK's festival circuit. The turn out, response and support; during and following our performance was inspiring. Other favourites in the past that stand out would be the aforementioned Blackwood Gathering (2015) Incineration Festival (2017) in London and Doomsday Fest/ Winter Assault in Brighton (2019) the latter two of which are annual indoor events; excellently organised with incredible lineups and well worth the overseas trip.
