今天采访到的是来自芬兰于韦斯屈莱的Experimental Metal乐队Vanguardian。在前一支乐队Inkvisitor解散后，乐队的四人决定继续创作音乐，于是在2019年成立了Vanguardian。2021年，Vanguardian发行了他们的首长EP"I: The Witchhammer"，乐队用融合了经典Heavy Metal, Death Metal和Thrash Metal是声音打造出了Vanguardian别具一格的Experimental Metal。2022年乐队发行了广受和好评的第二张EP"II: The Heretic"。现在，Vanguardian即将发表他们的第一张全长专辑，从先公开的单曲中可以感受到这将会是一张极具科幻色彩的Experimental Metal专辑。在Vanguardian打磨新专辑的同时，火山杂志联系到了乐队并进行了这次专访。

Today's interview features Vanguardian, an experimental metal band from Jyväskylä, Finland. After the dissolution of their previous band, Inkvisitor, the four members decided to continue creating music, leading to the formation of Vanguardian in 2019. In 2021, Vanguardian released their debut EP, I: The Witchhammer, blending classic heavy metal, death metal, and thrash metal to create Vanguardian's distinctive experimental metal sound. In 2022, the band released their highly acclaimed second EP, II: The Heretic. Now, Vanguardian is set to release their first full-length album, and from the already released singles, it is clear that this will be an experimental metal album with a strong sci-fi theme. While Vanguardian is fine-tuning their new album, Volcano Magazine reached out to the band and conducted this exclusive interview.

Hello! Thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview, Vanguardian. Greetings to everyone in the band! Could you please start by briefly introducing the Vanguardian band?

A: 你好，祝你有美好的一天！我们是一支来自芬兰于韦斯屈莱的Experimental Extreme Metal乐队。Vanguardian 乐队由四名成员组成：Markus Martinmäki（主唱）、Tino Jäntti（鼓手）、Sakari Soisalo（贝斯手）、Mikko Saviranta（吉他手）。

Hello and good day to you! We are an experimental extreme metal band from Jyväskylä, Finland. Vanguardian is a four piece: Markus Martinmäki (vocals), Tino Jäntti (drums), Sakari Soisalo (bass), Mikko Saviranta (guitar)

V: 在5月28日你们发布了一首单曲叫"LI-2 XA-1"，这是你们最新的一首单曲，这是一首非常激进的歌曲，可以请你们说说这首歌的主题是什么吗？

On May 28, you released a single called “LI-2 XA-1,” which is your latest single. It's a very aggressive song. Could you tell us what the theme of this song is?

A: 这首歌介绍了一个首次体验到意识的异种机器人，它在意识到自己的使命后立即感受到了生存危机。

The song introduces an xenogeneic android who experiences consciousness for the first time, immediately feeling an existential crisis realizing its mission.

V: 在Vanguardian成立以前，乐队的成员们有作为独立乐手或者在其他乐队里作为乐手活动的经历吗？

Before Vanguardian was formed, did the band members have experience as independent musicians or as musicians in other bands?

A: Vanguardian的成员们曾在一支名为Inkvisitor的激流金属乐队中合作，该乐队于2019年解散。我们四人决定继续合作，于是成立了Vanguardian。

Members of Vanguardian were together in a thrash metal band called Inkvisitor, which broke up in 2019. Us four decided to continue together and formed Vanguardian.

V: 你们的音乐元素非常多元，除了经典的Sludge Metal的声音之外，还有Progressive Metal，Black Metal，Industrial Metal等元素。我相信你们乐队成员的音乐品味一定非常广泛。可以说说在音乐上对你们影响最大的有哪些乐队吗？

Your music incorporates a wide range of elements, including classic sludge metal, progressive metal, black metal, industrial metal, and more. I believe that the members of your band have very diverse musical tastes. Could you tell us which bands have had the greatest influence on your music?

A: 我们喜欢听各种音乐。我们的鼓手Tino主要喜欢Death Metal。Sakari可能是我们乐队中最Progressive的乐手。主唱Markus和吉他手Mikko的口味比较相似，从经典Heavy Metal到Black和Thrash Metal。我们乐队的所有成员都是黑胶唱片收藏家。如果要提到具体的一支乐队，我们会说是Black Sabbath。

We like to listen to absolutely everything. Our drummer Tino is mostly in the death -side of metal. Sakari might be the most progressive player of our band. Vocalist Markus and the guitarist Mikko have more similar tastes ranging from classical heavy metal to black and thrash metal. All of our band members are vinyl collectors. If we would mention a band which unites us all, we would say Black Sabbath.

V: 这个问题我想聊聊"Demolition Hour"这首歌。这首歌的歌词讲述的是一个逐渐衰败的世界，最终这个世界被外星人占领。我想问问你们创作这个主题的初衷是什么？对于这个故事，是否有哪些影视或者文学作品启发了你们创作这首歌的主题？

I'd like to talk about the song “Demolition Hour.” The lyrics tell the story of a world that is gradually falling into decay, and eventually being taken over by aliens. I'd like to ask you what your original intention was in creating this theme. Were there any films, TV shows, or literary works that inspired you to create the theme of this song?

A: 我们的主唱Markus一直在阅读大量的科幻小说。Isaac Asimov、Dan Simmons、H.G Wells和刘慈欣的作品对他影响很大。此外，世界各地发生的战争也在歌曲中留下了印记。细心的听众可能会在歌曲中发现一些与此相关的双重含义。

Our vocalist Markus has been reading a lot of science fiction -novels. The works of Isaac Asimov, Dan Simmons, H.G Wells and Liu Cixin have influenced him a lot. Also the wars that have emerged around the world have left its mark in the song. Observant listener might find some double meanings in the song regarding that.

V: 如果我说得不对请纠正我，你们的四首单曲"Demolition Hour"，"Peripherals"，"Lost in Endeavour"，"LI-2 XA-1"都是为你们的首长专辑准备的对吗？可以告诉我们你们的新专辑的名字吗？新专辑大概会在什么时间发行？

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but your four singles, “Demolition Hour,” “Peripherals,” “Lost in Endeavour,” and “LI-2 XA-1,” are all for your debut album, right? Can you tell us the name of your new album? When will the new album be released?

A: 你说得没错。我们将在今年秋季推"III: Inhumanity this autumn"

You are correct. We will be releasing III: Inhumanity this autumn.

V: 在你们的新专辑发行前，你们还会发行新的单曲吗？

Will you release any new singles before your new album comes out?

A: 我们将在发行专辑的同时再发行一首单曲

We will release one more single simultaneously with the album.

V: 在2021年你们发行了第一张EP"I: The Witchhammer"，这是一张很精彩的专辑，在这张专辑里我非常喜欢"The Witchhammer"这首歌，你们的编曲非常复杂，同时又有精妙的吉他Solo和充满爆发力的吉他演奏。我想问问这首的创作流程是怎样的？就你们的作品来说，一首歌曲从最初的想法到完成都回经历哪些步骤？你们是这么互相协作的？

In 2021, you released your first EP, “I: The Witchhammer”, which is an excellent album. Among the tracks, I particularly enjoy “The Witchhammer”. Your arrangements are highly intricate, featuring exquisite guitar solos and powerful vocals. I’d like to ask about the creative process behind this song. For your works, what steps does a song go through from the initial idea to completion? How do you collaborate with each other?

A: 在创作过程中，乐队从一开始就重视“DIY”态度。整张EP都是在我们的排练场地录制的，由于疫情，排练场地突然关闭了。乐队成员感到被追捕、幽闭和一种恶性循环。"The Witchhammer"是我们的贝斯Sakari的作品。当时，我们经常把个人创作的、几乎已经完成的歌曲带到录音室。如今，我们的目标是在现场演奏时更多地采用即兴创作的方式。

In the creative process, the band has valued “DIY” -attitude from the start. The whole EP was recorded at our rehearsal place, which was suddenly closed for attendance due to the pandemic. The band members felt hunted, claustrophobic and in a kind of a vicious circle. The Witchhammer was a composition of our bassist Sakari. At that time we used to have individually composed, almost completed songs to bring to the studio sessions. Nowadays we aim for a more jam-based composing playing live.

V: 2022年你们发行了第二张EP"II: The Heretic"，这张EP的风格比你们的第一张EP更加激进，风格也更多元了。可以说说这样的变化是从何而来的吗？是你们在探索新的音乐方向时自然地加入了这种更加激进的声音，还是你们为了加入新的元素刻意去做出的尝试？

In 2022, you released your second EP, “II: The Heretic.” The style of this EP is more radical than your first EP, and the style is also more diverse. Can you talk about where this change came from? Was it a natural addition of this more radical sound as you explored new musical directions, or was it a deliberate attempt to incorporate new elements?

A: 第二张EP是在Astia Studios录制的。Anssi Kippo（曾参与录制Children of Bodom、Teräsbetoni、Ensiferum）是我们的录音师，他是模拟录音和录音设备的忠实拥护者。这是我们第一次将“不按节拍音轨演奏”的方式引入Vanguardian。这让我们更有现场感。此外，我们尽量减少现代电脑的使用，主要使用70和80年代制造的设备。这可能会给"II: The Heretic"带来原始和激进的感觉。乐队成员喜欢经典摇滚和重金属唱片，因此很自然地决定学习老技术。乐队随时准备尝试并融入“新”元素。

The second EP was recorded at Astia Studios. We were engineered by Anssi Kippo (Children of Bodom, Teräsbetoni, Ensiferum) who is a huge proponent of analogue sound and recording mechanics. It was the first time we introduced “not playing to a click track“ to Vanguardian. It gave us more of a live feel. Also we minimized the inclusion of modern computers and used mostly gear that was made in the 70’s and 80’s. This might give the II: The Heretic raw and a radical feel. The band members love the classical rock- and heavy metal records so it was a natural decision to go learn the techniques of the old. The band is always ready to experiment and incorporate “new” elements.

V: 作为一支融合了这么多种音乐元素的乐队，我想问问你们会如何定义Vanguardian的风格？

As a band that blends so many different musical elements, how would you define Vanguardian's genre?

A: 这很难定义，因为这在于听者怎么看。Experimental Death Metal最接近我们真实的风格。

It’s hard to define, it’s in the eye of the beholder. Experimental death metal is close to the truth.

V: 乐队今年还有哪些演出计划？有什么你们希望能在今年达到的目标吗？

What other performances does the band have planned for this year? Are there any goals you hope to achieve this year?

A: 我们将在首张专辑发行时在芬兰各地演出。我们对出国演出也非常感兴趣。

We are going to perform around Finland at the time of our debut album release. We have a great interest in going to go perform abroad.
