Today's interview features Medo, a Black Metal band from Portugal. Formed in 2006, Medo is a long-established band with a rich history. The band was co-founded by two members: Medo I handles all songwriting for the band, while Medo II is responsible for lyrics and vocals. In 2008, the band released a four-song EP. In 2009, they released their first official album, “Fantasmasis,” through the Portuguese label Axe Farm Studios, with a limited edition of 100 CDs. In 2011, the band collaborated with the renowned Portuguese label War Productions to release their second official album, “Matéria Negra.” Following its release, the band gained more attention. The album's eerie, and terrifying atmosphere, creating a sense of helplessness for all fans, as if Satan had descended. It is evident that the band was deeply influenced by the early work of Mayhem. Although this album did not satisfy everyone in some aspects, it is widely recognized by fans as their most outstanding album. In 2014, the band released their third official album, “Cruzando os Portais do Submundo,” through the Brazilian label Nyarlathotep Records. , which also became their final album. In 2016, the band announced their dissolution. Years later, the Portuguese label Haloran Records reissued their first official album, “Fantasmasis.” Recently, with the assistance of Haloran Records, the magazine conducted an exclusive interview with Medo!

Hello brother, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, right? First of all, let's say hello to all Chinese fans. Medo band was founded in 2006. How did you form this band in the first place? What does the name Medo mean?

M: 问好！是的，这是我们首次接受中国杂志的采访，能与如此遥远的国家建立联系，实属荣幸。我们向中国所有的Black Metal乐迷致以问候！乐队由两位成员组成，他们怀着共同的目标：深入探索神秘主义与黑暗Black Metal音乐的世界，创作出能将听众带入心灵最黑暗角落的音景与主题。Medo的两位成员均具备一定音乐经验；Medo 1是多乐器演奏者，擅长吉他、贝斯、合成器和鼓，而Medo 2则是经验丰富的歌手和作词人。

Hail! Yes, it is the first time we are interviewed by a Chinese magazine, it is an honor to be in contact with such a distant country. We salute all Black Metal fans from China! The band was formed by two persons, as entities, who shared the same goal: to dive deeper into the world of occult and dark Black Metal music, creating soundscapes and themes that drove the listener to the blackest places in the mind. Both Medo members were already musicians with some degree of experience; Medo 1 was a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, bass, synth, and drums, and Medo 2 was also an experienced vocalist and lyricist.

V: 你们的乐队只有两名成员，而且你们都是第一代成员。你们彼此非常熟悉，这使得创作作品非常方便，因为你们可以根据自己的想法创作歌曲。你能介绍一下你们的创作过程吗？我看到你们的分工非常明确

Your band only has two members and you are both first generation members. You are very familiar with each other, which makes it very convenient to create works because you can create songs according to your own ideas. Can you introduce your creative process? I see that your division of labor is clear

M: 分工非常明确：专辑的录制从Black Metal曲目开始，首先录制鼓声，然后是吉他线条和贝斯，歌词、人声和所有合成器编排则在之后完成。环境音乐曲目仅通过音乐与人声同步录制，通常在Black Metal曲目完成后进行。

The labor was pretty much clear: the albums were recorded starting with the Black Metal tracks, first drums, then guitar lines and bass, and the lyrics, voices, and all synth arrangements were made after. The ambient tracks were merely made with music and voice at the same time and usually after the Black Metal tracks were composed.

Your band has released three official albums, and the recording effects of these three albums are very excellent. Which studio did you record the albums in? Which producer made the album for you?

M: 这三张专辑均在Axe Farm Studios录制，该录音室是Medo 1的个人录音室。所有录音、混音及母带处理均由他本人完成。

All three albums were produced in Axe Farm Studios, the home studio from Medo 1. All the recording, mixing, and mastering was done by him.

V: 你的Logo是我见过最不寻常的Logo。是谁为你设计了这个Logo？你的专辑封面设计也非常独特。是谁为你设计了这些专辑封面？

Your logo is the most unconventional one I have ever seen. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artworks are also designed uniquely. Who designed these album artworks for you?

The logo was designed in 2006, when the band was founded. It was designed by Medo 2 and is inspired by a carnivorous plant. About the cover art, the first album is an old analog picture, which, supposedly, when developed in the photo lab, this spectral form appeared in it. It is an example of many analog pictures made in several places that, when revealed on paper, strange spectral beings appear in them. The second album cover is a band picture with some Photoshop twists, and the third album image was drawn by Brazilian artist Emerson Maia.

V: 你与Haloran Records、Axe Farm Studios、War Productions、Nyarlathotep Records等唱片公司合作发行了专辑，你的首张专辑也由Haloran Records重新发行。你是如何与这些唱片公司建立合作关系的？你对这些厂牌的合作成果满意吗？

You and Haloran Records, Axe Farm Studios，War Productions，Nyarlathotep Records collaborated with these labels to release albums, and your first album was also reissued by Haloran Records. How did you get in touch with these labels to collaborate? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands?

M: Axe Farm Studios是2009年首张专辑的独立发行厂牌；War Productions是葡萄牙厂牌，其老板与乐队熟识并于2011年发行了第二张专辑； Nyarlathotep Records是一家巴西唱片公司，该公司在互联网上广为人知并主动联系乐队于2014年发行第三张专辑；而Haloran Records是一家葡萄牙唱片公司，该公司在2025年主动联系乐队重新发行首张专辑。

Axe Farm Studios was a self-made label for the release of the first album back in 2009; War Productions is a Portuguese label whose owner is known by the band and released the second album in 2011; Nyarlathotep Records is a Brazilian label that was known on the internet and approached the band to release the 3rd album back in 2014; and Haloran Records is a Portuguese label that approached the band to re-release the first album in 2025.

Fear, Occult, these are your music themes. Why did you choose such music themes? What do you want to express through this music theme? Medo II also created lyrics, what inspired him?

M: 我们的想法是将神秘感提升到另一个层次，探讨真正让人们感到恐惧的事物，而不仅仅是那些老生常谈的撒旦、撒旦、撒旦主题。这些主题已经不再让人们感到恐惧，至少对金属乐迷来说是这样。这就是我们发展“medo”概念的基础，这个词在葡萄牙语中实际上意味着“恐惧”。

The idea was to take the obscurity to another level and to talk about all that really scares people, not just the same old themes of Satan, Satan, Satan. That does not scare people anymore, at least metal fans anyway. This was the base idea to develop the concept of medo, which actually means "fear" in Portuguese language.

V: 是什么原因导致你们的乐队在2016年解散？你们有计划重组乐队吗？

What caused your band to disband in 2016? Do you have any plans to reorganize the band?

M: 目前没有重组乐队的计划；我们解散的主要原因是没有空闲时间继续这个项目。

There are no plans to restart the band; we disbanded mainly because there was no spare time to continue the project.

V: 你的乐队作品深受Mayhem乐队的影响，以原始粗犷的吉他riff、冷酷无情的氛围，带有一丝恐怖气息。你还使用了一些合成器，使作品更显原始粗犷。可以看出，Medo I是一位非常有才华的音乐人，所有乐器部分均由他独立完成。你对自己的作品有何看法？

Your band's works have been greatly influenced by the Mayhem band, with a primitive, rough Riff, cold and ruthless atmosphere that gives a hint of horror. You also used some synthesizers to make your works more primitive and rough. It can be seen that Medo I is a very talented musician, and all the instrument parts were independently completed by him. What is your opinion on your own works?

M: 嗯，那大概就是当时流淌出来的东西吧。没有刻意去完成任何技术性部分；我只是试图从生活中所有阴暗的角落汲取灵感并将它们融入音乐中。我对这三张专辑都相当满意，从第一张专辑的简单构思到最后一张专辑的复杂作品，这是一个进步的过程。我不会改变任何东西。它就是它本身；它是那个时代的宣言…

Well, it was what flowed in that time, I suppose. There was no forcing to do any technical parts; I just tried to get inspiration from all the dark corners in my life and pour it into the music. I am quite satisfied with all three albums, being a progression from simple compositions in the first to more elaborate works in the last album. I would not change anything. It is what it is; it is a statement of those times…

V: 你们是一支完全录音的乐队，不参与任何现场演出。为什么不选择参加一些音乐节活动呢？

You are a fully recorded band and do not participate in any performances. Why don't you choose to participate in some music festival activities?

M: Medo从未进行过现场演出，因为如果我们这样做，就必须是一场非常戏剧化的表演；这将涉及大量音乐家和演员，就像一部轻歌剧。我们曾被邀请进行现场演出，但由于预算限制，这从未成为可能。如果有一天有人邀请乐队进行现场演出并且预算非常充足，那么我们会考虑这个想法。

Medo never performed live because if we did, it had to be a very theatrical spectacle; it would involve lots of musicians and actors, like an operetta. We were invited to play live, but it was never possible due to budget constraints. If someday someone invites the band to play live with a very big budget, then we will consider that idea.

Although you have been disbanded for a long time, your works have left a deep impression on me. I hope you can reorganize the band and contribute more works to all fans. I also hope to attract more Chinese fans to pay attention to and support your band. Do you have anything to say to Chinese fans in the end?
