今天采访到的是来自葡萄牙的Death / Doom Metal乐队Deadly Mourning Shadows还是杂志的老朋友Melkor一个人2024年组建的，在组建不久之后便发行了第一张正式专辑“Shadows of Despair”，凄凉悲哀的氛围给人一种不寒而栗的感觉，突出了Doom Metal的感觉，Death Metal凶狠的Riff又让这支乐队个人一种凶狠，残暴的感觉，这张专辑所有的制作全部都是由Melkor一个人完成，而且录音效果非常出色，前不久杂志与Melkor取得联系进行了一次专访！

Today's interview was with the Portuguese band Death/Doom Metal, Deadly Mourning Shadows, which was formed by Melkor, an old friend of the magazine, in 2024. Shortly after their formation, they released their first official album "Shadows of Despair". The desolate and sad atmosphere gives people a chilling feeling, highlighting the feeling of Doom Metal. Death Metal's fierce Riff also gives this band a sense of ferocity and cruelty. All the production of this album was completed by Melkor alone, and the recording effect was excellent. Recently, the magazine contacted Melkor for an exclusive interview!

Hello Melkor, we meet again. Is this the Deadly Mourning Shadows band that you formed? This band was formed in 2024. How did you form this band?

Yes, Deadly Mourning Shadows is one of my solo projects, born in 2024. It came from a deep need to express a more introspective and mournful side of my musical vision, emotions and thoughts that didn’t quite fit within the other bands and projects I’ve been involved in. Each project I create has a distinct identity and purpose, and Deadly Mourning Shadows emerged as a vessel for grief, betrayal, and the haunting weight of memory. The songs came to life during moments of solitude, shaped by quiet reflection and personal struggles. I handled all instruments and composition, allowing me to maintain full emotional and conceptual coherence throughout the album. There’s no compromise here, just raw, unfiltered emotion translated into sound. While I often collaborate with others, this time I felt the need to walk alone, letting the shadows speak for themselves.

V: 你能介绍一下这个乐队的创作过程吗？

Can you introduce the creative process of this band?

M: Deadly Mourning Shadows背后的创作过程是非常个人化和孤独的。它始于挥之不去的悲伤和背叛感，这种感觉需要转化为有形的东西。我通常从一种情绪、一种特定的情感氛围开始，然后将其转化为旋律、即兴重复段和抒情概念。大多数时候，我让吉他引导我穿过最初的情感景观。从那里开始，我构建层次、低音、环境纹理、声音模式，直到构图感觉完全反映了我想要表达的情感。鼓通常是最后一个元素，用来塑造每首歌的最终动态和强度。歌词经常在器乐创作期间或之后出现，有时甚至是同时出现，因为我喜欢它们和音乐呼吸同样的空气。他们处理损失、背叛、遗弃，以及在黑暗中寻找光明的斗争。我也用英语和葡萄牙语写作，这取决于哪种语言最适合当时的情绪。一切都是在我自己的工作室Studios 13中录制和混音的，这让我可以在没有外部压力的情况下完全自由地塑造声音身份。这是一种宣泄的体验，一种通过声音净化的方式。

The creative process behind Deadly Mourning Shadows was deeply personal and solitary. It started with a lingering sense of sorrow and betrayal, feelings that demanded to be transformed into something tangible. I usually begin with a mood, a certain emotional atmosphere, and then translate that into melodies, riffs, and lyrical concepts. Most of the time, I let the guitar guide me through the initial emotional landscape. From there, I build layers, bass, ambient textures, vocal patterns, until the composition feels like a complete reflection of the emotion I intended to express. Drums are usually the last element, added to shape the final dynamic and intensity of each song. The lyrics often come during or after the instrumental writing, sometimes even simultaneously, because I like them to breathe the same air as the music. They deal with loss, betrayal, abandonment, and the struggle to find light within darkness. I also write in both English and Portuguese, depending on what language best suits the emotion of the moment. Everything was recorded and mixed in my own studio, Studios 13, giving me complete freedom to shape the sonic identity without external pressures. It was a cathartic experience, a way of cleansing through sound.

The recording effect of this album is excellent, or is it an album recorded in your own studio? Is the recording process progressing smoothly?

M: 谢谢你的好话。是的整张专辑都是在我自己的工作室13录制、混音和掌握的。完全控制录音过程让我能够花时间按照我的想象塑造氛围。没有匆忙，没有截止日期，只专注于将情感转化为声音。这个过程本身很自然。当然与任何深入挖掘原始情感的项目一样，也有一些激烈的时刻，不是技术上的困难，而是情感上的困难。有些部分很难录制，尤其是人声，因为我必须重温某些个人伤口才能捕捉到正确的感觉。但这也是这些歌曲的真实性所在。独自工作也意味着我可以随心所欲地进行实验。我不遵循公式。如果一首歌需要缓慢地呼吸或沉浸在混响中以唤起正确的氛围，我会选择这条路。我相信音乐会引导我，在这种情况下，它以一种非常流畅和有机的方式做到了这一点。

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, the entire album was recorded, mixed, and mastered at my own space, Studios 13. Having full control over the recording process allows me to take the time I need to shape the atmosphere exactly how I envision it. There’s no rush, no deadlines, just a pure focus on translating emotion into sound. The process itself flowed quite naturally. Of course, as with any project that dives deep into raw emotions, there were moments of intensity, not technical difficulties, but emotional ones. Some parts were heavy to record, especially vocals, because I had to revisit certain personal wounds to capture the right feeling. But that’s also what gave the songs their authenticity. Working alone also means I can experiment as much as I want. I don’t follow a formula. If a song needs to breathe slowly or be drenched in reverb to evoke the right atmosphere, I follow that path. I trust the music to guide me, and in this case, it did so in a very fluid and organic way.

The logo design of this band is very simple, but it is my personal favorite design form because I can easily remember the band's name. Is this logo your own design? The artwork design of this album is also very beautiful. Did you design this artwork yourself?

Yes, both the logo and the artwork were created by me. I like to keep everything as personal and authentic as possible, especially in a project as introspective as Deadly Mourning Shadows. The logo was intentionally kept simple and minimalistic, almost like a silent scream. I didn’t want an overly complex or unreadable logo; I wanted something that would stay in the mind, something that quietly echoes the emotional weight behind the music. As for the artwork, it was born from the same mindset. I wanted something that could visually reflect the desolation, the sorrow, and the beauty in decay that the album speaks about. The color palette, the textures, and even the spatial emptiness were all carefully chosen to mirror the themes of grief, betrayal, and emotional collapse that run through the lyrics. Creating both the logo and the artwork myself gave me the freedom to ensure a cohesive identity from sound to visuals,something raw, sincere, and deeply personal. For a project like this, where everything comes from the deepest corners of my mind and heart, it felt only natural to have my hands on every aspect of its presentation.

Love, Betrayal, Feelings are the music themes of your band. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section, which were all created by you. What inspired it?

These themes, love, betrayal, grief, inner torment, have always haunted me, in one way or another. Deadly Mourning Shadows was born as a vessel for all those unspoken emotions that didn’t fit in any of my other projects. While other bands of mine deal with social, political, or philosophical themes, this one is purely emotional, more intimate, more confessional. I chose these themes because they are universal and timeless. Everyone has, at some point, felt the sting of betrayal, the emptiness of a broken heart, or the weight of emotional solitude. Through this music, I try not just to expose those wounds, but also to find a kind of obscure beauty in them. There’s something strangely poetic about sorrow, it strips us bare, shows us who we really are The lyrics were all written by me, and they came from personal reflections, late-night introspection, and a need to purge emotional weight. Sometimes they’re based on real experiences, other times they come from observing others or imagining what it feels like to live through certain emotional extremes. What inspired me the most was the idea of emotional ruins, those places inside us where something once stood proud, and now only shadows and echoes remain. At its core, Deadly Mourning Shadows is about turning pain into expression, transforming fragility into something powerful. It’s not about victimhood, but about confronting the abyss and daring to sing from it.

V: 将来是否有可能发行这张专辑的CD版本，因为它仍然以你自己的品牌或数字格式发行。

Is it possible to release a CD version of this album in the future, as it is still being released under your own label or in digital format.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this in any of my projects before, but whenever I create an album, I always design the full booklet as if it were for a CD, hoping to eventually release a physical edition. Although the album is currently available digitally, yes, a CD version is definitely in my plans. To me, the physical format holds a special significance, and the idea of seeing all the visual work, everything from the cover to the full booklet, finally come to life in a physical form is something I always strive for. I envision it as a limited edition, with all the elements that help expand the themes and atmosphere of the album, including the lyrics and artwork. It will be a way to offer the fans a more complete and immersive experience.

As for my opinion on the work, I would say that it’s a reflection of everything I’ve experienced and learned throughout my musical journey. The combination of Death and Doom Metal elements in Shadows of Despair was a deliberate choice to create something that feels both heavy and introspective. The slow, crushing rhythms are meant to reflect the weight of despair, while the more intense, ferocious moments are there to represent the conflict and turmoil we all face within ourselves. I’ve always approached my music with a sense of personal dedication. Each note, each riff, and each word is carefully chosen to express the emotions I want to convey. I try to create something that is not just intense, but also emotionally impactful. When I listen to the album now, I can feel that it captures the essence of what I was trying to say, there’s a certain catharsis in it, both for me as the creator and hopefully for the listener as well. Of course, as with all art, I see areas where I could have done more or where I can improve, but I’m proud of the final result. It’s an album that I feel strongly connected to, and I’m happy to share that connection with others.
