Not too long ago I interviewed a band from Malaysia called Perpetual, today I'm back with an interview with a band from Malaysia called Bunuhdiri, formed in 2015 by three Slamming Brutal Death metal lovers Wira, Syed Nabil and Adib. The name Bunuhdiri stands for suicide in Malay, and the band members explain the name by giving different meanings, Bunuhdiri stands for getting rid of your old self, overcoming difficulties, and a journey of growth, and in 2016 the band released their own EP album "Bunuhdiri In 2016, the band released their own EP album "Bunuhdiri", which was well received by Malaysian fans, followed by a compilation album "Vinyl Passion Vol 2 Compilation" in 2017, and two singles in 2020 - 2023. In 2024 the band released their second EP "Cosmic Rebirth", after the release of the new EP the band participated in a music festival in Thailand, on the occasion of the release of the new album I also contacted one of the founding members of the band, singer Wira, for an interview!

Bunuhdiri was brought to life in 2015 by three individuals: Adib (R.I.P MY BRO), Syed Nabil, and myself, Wira. The inception of the band happened during one of our casual hangout sessions at a local Kuew Teow restaurant near my place. Having all come from different bands previously, we shared a deep passion for the slamming brutal death metal genre, and it was during these discussions that the idea to form Bunuhdiri began to take shape. When brainstorming for a name, I suggested "Bunuhdiri," a term that resonated with its dark and macabre essence. The name itself translates to "Suicide" in English, but it holds a deeper meaning for us. We do not condone or promote the act of suicide; rather, we see it as a symbolic concept. For us, "Bunuhdiri" represents the idea of shedding one's old self to become something greater, a metaphorical rebirth. It symbolizes the transformation of a person striving to overcome their current state and become a stronger, more evolved being. This concept serves as a motivation for us, driving our music and lyrical themes towards exploring the depths of human emotions and existential struggles. In essence, Bunuhdiri stands as a testament to the journey of self-discovery, growth, and the relentless pursuit of artistic expression through the medium of brutal death metal.

Now the only remaining first-generation member of your band is singer Wira Rastara. The other members will be replaced from 2019 to 2022. Why did the first-generation member quit the band? How did the new member join the band and are you satisfied with the new member's work?

The decision for the first-generation members to depart from the band stemmed from personal reasons, mainly focusing on endeavors such as expanding their businesses and dedicating more time to their families. We fully support their choices and wish them all the best in their future pursuits. Transitioning to a new lineup was a significant but necessary step for the continuation of Bunuhdiri. I took on the responsibility of handpicking each new member, ensuring that their skills and passion aligned seamlessly with the band's vision. The process began with recruiting guitarist Rezza, whose technical prowess and dedication to the craft immediately stood out. It was then Rezza who recommended Christopher Brown for the bass position, a decision that has greatly enriched our sound. For the drumming position, we initially welcomed Azan Ridzuan, whose talents were undeniable. However, due to his commitments to his studio and business, we later recruited Suryan Nair as our current drummer. Suryan's relentless energy and precision behind the drum kit have truly elevated our performances. I am incredibly pleased with the current formation of Bunuhdiri. Each member brings a unique set of skills and a shared passion for creating intense and brutal music. Together, we have taken the Bunuhdiri sound to new heights, exploring more technical and intricate compositions than ever before. The new songs we have been crafting with this lineup are a testament to our collective growth and dedication. They are more ferocious, technical, and brutal than our previous material, marking a significant progression for Bunuhdiri. I am confident in saying that this lineup has truly elevated our music to another level, and I couldn't be happier with the results.

How does your band usually compose songs? Can you introduce your creative process? How was the creation process for this year's new EP album?

Our songwriting process typically begins with discussions among the band members regarding reference tracks and thematic concepts we want to explore. From there, our guitarist takes the lead in crafting the musical foundation. He starts by "noodling" for riffs, often inspired by his own "earworms" or musical ideas that stick with him. These initial riffs serve as the building blocks for the song, gradually developing into full compositions. Working from his bedroom studio, he creates demos with programmed drums to present to the rest of the band for feedback. Once we've collectively agreed on the song structures and arrangements, our guitarist transcribes the music into tabs for our bassist to follow. Meanwhile, our drummer records live drum beats to replace the programmed ones, adding an organic and dynamic feel to the tracks. With the finalized instrumental tracks in place, we then move on to the vocal recording stage. The instrumental tracks serve as a guide for our singer, allowing him to experiment with vocal melodies and lyrical themes that complement the music. Finally, the premixed tracks, complete with the live drum recordings, become the foundation for our songs. We work closely with our mixing and mastering engineer, providing them with the tracks as a reference for the final sound we envision. This collaborative and iterative process allows us to fine-tune each aspect of the music, ensuring that every riff, drum fill, and vocal line contributes to the overall intensity and impact of the songs. It's a labor of passion and dedication, culminating in the creation of our new material.

Thank you for your kind words about the recording quality our new material. We're glad to hear that you appreciate it! For our latest album, the recordings took place in each band member's home studio. Many of us are part-time musicians, with some also involved in teaching music and session work for various bands. This setup allowed us the flexibility to work on our parts at our own pace and in familiar environments. When it came to recording the vocals, we turned to Loci Studios in Malaysia. Their expertise and state-of-the-art equipment ensured that we captured the intensity and emotion of the vocal performances Following the recording phase, the mixing and mastering of the album were expertly handled by Kingslayer Audio in Hungary. Their meticulous attention to detail and deep understanding of our vision for our songs resulted in the powerful and polished sound that you hear，During the creative process, we decided to incorporate a saxophone into one of the tracks. This saxophone part was played by Guido Baucia, a renowned jazz saxophonist from Argentina. His contribution added a unique and unexpected element to the song, enriching the overall sonic landscape of the song by the the title Cosmic Rebirth Overall, the recording process for the new album went smoothly, thanks to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. We were able to harness the capabilities of our home studios, combined with the expertise of Loci Studios and Kingslayer Audio, to create an album that we are truly proud of.

The theme of your music has changed from the early bloody themes to more sci-fi themes such as aliens and cosmic horror. Many bands are now using such music themes. Why did you choose such a music theme? What do you want to express through this musical theme? Do you have any lyrics for the bed set? Who wrote these lyrics? What was his inspiration?

We've found that our new music themes resonate more strongly with our evolving creative vision. The shift towards sci-fi elements, aliens, and cosmic horror reflects our desire to delve into uncharted territories of the imagination Rather than adhering to typical genre conventions, we wanted to explore themes that are expansive, futuristic, and beyond the ordinary. Our aim is to create a musical experience that transports listeners to realms they've never dared to imagine As for the lyrics of our latest tracks, they've been meticulously crafted to complement this blend of sci-fi and gore. The lyrics are an integral part of the sonic landscape we're constructing, weaving tales of otherworldly encounters, existential dread, and the darker aspects of the human psyche. The writing process for these lyrics was done by myself and a collaborative effort within the band, drawing inspiration from a myriad of sources such as classic sci-fi literature, cosmic horror mythos, end of world, alien domination and our collective fascination with the unknown. We wanted to evoke a sense of both wonder and unease, inviting listeners to embark on a journey that challenges their perceptions of reality. In essence, our music aims to push the boundaries of what's expected, inviting listeners to expand their imaginations and immerse themselves in a world that blurs the lines between the fantastical and the macabre.

Underrated Records is renowned for producing some of the most intense and brutal death metal bands in the scene. The atmosphere was nothing short of electric, with a packed venue filled with passionate metalheads who were there to support the scene and enjoy some killer music.
