超越苍穹,时间的纪念碑 - 荷兰Death Metal乐队Beyond the Pale专访


今天为大家采访到的是一支来自荷兰2020年才成立的新乐队Beyond the Pale,虽然Beyond the Pale是一支非常年轻的乐队,但是乐队的所有成员都是荷兰极端金属界非常有资历的乐手,参加过众多荷兰的经典乐队,女歌手Janneke de Rooy更是参与了Ugly Sin,Why She Kills,Altar,AltarEgo等乐队,今年乐队刚刚自己发行了他们的EP专辑“Monument in Time”,这张专辑发行之后受到广泛的好评和关注,张专辑受到了像Thrash Metal,Death Metal等风格的影响,整齐,精彩的Riff,精准的鼓点,低沉有力,熊狠毒辣的演唱,构成了这张经典的专辑作品,前不久乐队的鼓手Johnny与我取得联系进行了一次采访!

Today's interview is with Beyond the Pale, a new band from the Netherlands that was only formed in 2020. Although Beyond the Pale is a very young band, all of the members of the band are very experienced musicians in the Dutch extreme metal scene, and have played in many Dutch classic bands, with female singer Janneke de Rooy playing in Ugly Sin, Why She Kills, Altar, AltarEgo, etc. This year, the band has just released their own EP album “Monument in Time”, which was released on their own. Ugly Sin, Why She Kills, Altar, AltarEgo, etc. This year the band has just released their EP “Monument in Time”, which has received a lot of critical acclaim and attention since its release, and the album has been well received by bands such as Thrash, Metal, Death Metal and many more. The album is influenced by Thrash Metal, Death Metal and other styles, neat, wonderful riffs, precise drums, low and powerful, bearish and venomous vocals, constituting this classic album work, not long ago the band's drummer Johnny contacted me for an interview!

Hello Johnny nice to meet you and thank you so much for contacting me for this interview, I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, first of all say hello to your fans in China, Beyond the Pale was formed in 2020 and is a very young band, who initiated the formation of this band in the first place? What is the meaning of the name Beyond the Pale?

First of all, thank you very much for this opportunity to introduce Beyond the Pale in China. We appreciate it very much! Beyond the Pale is a metal band from Utrecht, the Netherlands. Since 2020 we've been playing energetic thrash/death metal with a pinch of black metal, brimming with soul-purging riffs. Jeroen van Donselaar (guitar) and I, Johnny (drums), started the band. The band name is referring to an expression that was first used in Ireland way back in the 13th century, to describe people who lived outside the parts of Ireland controlled by the British. Pale is an old name for a stake or pointed piece of wood, and to a barrier made of such stakes; a palisade or fence. Once you passed "the Pale," you were outside the authority and safety of English law, and subject to all the savageries of rural Ireland. Anyone living beyond those pales was considered an outcast, someone not part of society. "Beyond the pale" then became a colloquial phrase meaning "outside the limits of acceptable behaviour or judgment." Metal in itself has always been sort of an outcast group of society and often considered offensive, and outside agreed standards of decency. So we felt the name was very fitting when we started this band.

You have a five-piece band, which I consider to be a classic band configuration, and it seems like you're very particular about the arrangement of your work, can you tell us a little bit about your creative process? I think your experience will inspire a lot of young musicians!

Death and thrash metal runs in our veins. We love energy and catchy riffs, we love riffs that stay stuck in your head forever like little earworms, and we absolutely love deathly growls to finish it off. Besides, these two genres combined give us the freedom to put in all the different emotions we have when talking about certain issues, whether personal, local or global. The songs you can hear on our debut, ‘Monument in Time’, are all composed by Jeroen van Donselaar and myself. At least the outlines. The rest of the band coloured them in, so to speak. On April 27, 2022 we had our debut live show at Big Ass Metal Fest in Utrecht. As you can imagine, we were very excited. It felt like our band adventure would finally properly start off with, hopefully, many more live shows to follow. However, fate would decide differently. Halfway through our set, Jeroen suddenly collapsed. He died from cardiac arrest doing what he did best: Delivering razor-sharp riffs on stage with a huge smile on his face. So 'Monument in Time', released exactly two years later, marks both our studio debut, and our come-back. The EP honours Jeroen's memory and his extraordinary talent for soul purging riffs, as reflected in all six tracks. We channelled our grief into art, releasing ‘Monument in Time’ as a poignant tribute. For the new songs, it is either guitarist Boudewijn or guitarist Geoffrey who comes up with a draft version. Again, these are outlines. The rest of the band can suggest adjustments, Janneke will add lyrics, etc.

You guys choose a female singer, Janneke is a very active singer in your country, she's in a lot of bands, you can introduce this female singer, you have to just know that a female musician in a death metal band will always get more attention haha

Frank and I have known each other for a long time, we played together in a band called Bloodgod (https://bloodgod.nl/) . During one of Bloodgod's shows, we shared the stage with a band that was fronted by Janneke, who made a lasting impression with her fierce stage performance. Frank and Janneke were already acquainted. When I invited Janneke to join Beyond the Pale, she agreed provided that Frank would join as well. He was part of her fringe benefits, hahaha. Janneke and Geoffrey also knew each other. Anyway, Janneke was previously fronting Altar, Paper Doll Decay, and Why She Kills. She’s currently also part of Maatkare, an all-female lineup that plays ‘pharaocious’ death metal, with influences from Nile, Scarab, Behemoth, Arch Enemy and Kataklysm. V: 你们的专辑在录音方面非常出色,请问是在哪个录音棚录制的?哪位制作人制作了你们的专辑?


Your album is excellent in terms of recording, what studio did you record the album at? Which producer produced your album?

Thank you, we’re glad you like the production. We fully agree. All tracks were recorded at Mass Audio Studios in our hometown Utrecht in the Netherlands. Studio engineering was done by Folkert van Blom and Marieke Koedijk, mix by Arnout Leene. These guys and girl previously worked with Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy, Charlotte Wessels of Delain, Bloodgod, Mark Jansen of Epica and Mayan, Daniël de Jongh of Textures and Karmaflow, Metropole Orchestra, and plenty of others. They a studio wizards who know very well how to make us sounds good 😊. The tracks were mastered by Tony Lindgren at renown Fascination Street Studios in Sweden. Their client list is impressive, including famous bands like Sepultura, Kreator, At The Gates, Amon Amarth, Carcass, and many, many more.


V: 你们的Logo设计非常简单,但这种设计形式是我最喜欢的形式之一,因为我很容易就能记住你们的名字,而且你们的专辑封面设计得非常漂亮,就像世界末日一样,这些专辑封面是谁为你们设计的呢?


Your logo design is very simple, but this form of design is one of my favorite forms because I can easily remember your name, and your album artwork is beautifully designed as the end of the world, who designed these album artworks for you?


J: 乐队的Logo是我设计的,我特意设计了一个看起来很“金属”,但在音乐节海报上又很容易辨认的标志😊。至于图案:它是由我们的吉他手Boudewijn设计的,他也是一位技艺精湛的设计师。就像一张照片捕捉了凝固在时间中的瞬间一样,这张唱片也是一座听觉纪念碑,是对我们逝去的战友Jeroen van Donselaar的致敬。我们尽力捕捉彦禄的歌曲并将其永恒化。纪念碑由钟楼形象化而成,钟上显示的时间正是彦禄逝世的时刻。站在钟塔旁的人影的确让人联想到彦禄,这也是因为那个飞舞的白色“V”字。这座塔矗立在一片城市废墟中。虽然不清楚发生的时间和原因,但文明显然已经崩溃。这部分是因为我们对当今世界的现状感到担忧,这些担忧也反映在我们的音乐和歌词中。还有一部分原因是,这也是我们在耶罗去世后的感受:仿佛世界上有什么东西被打破了。仿佛我们周围的一切都崩溃了。Jeroen是平面小说和漫画的忠实粉丝,因此Budwein在设计作品时也考虑到了这一点。总的来说这幅作品象征着Jeroen的遗产在时间的永恒中沉淀。他可能已经离开了我们,但我们永远不会忘记他。


The band logo was designed by me, and I deliberately aimed for a logo that would look ‘metal’, but would also be easy to spot and easy to read on a festival poster 😊. As for the artwork: it was designed by our guitarist Boudewijn, who also happens to be a skilled designer. Like a photo visually captures a moment frozen in time, this release is an aural monument, a tribute to our lost comrade Jeroen van Donselaar. We tried to capture and eternalize Jeroen’s songs as best as we could. The monument is visualized by the clock tower, and the time shown on the clock is the moment of Jeroen’s death. The figure standing next to it is indeed reminiscent of Jeroen, also because of the white flying V. Whether it’s really him, is up to you, the viewer. The tower stands in a bit of an urban wasteland. When or why it happened is not clear, but civilization has obviously collapsed. That’s partly because we are concerned about today’s state of the world, and those concerns are reflected in our music and lyrics. And it’s partly because it’s how we felt after Jeroen’s death: like something was broken in the world. As if everything around us collapsed. Jeroen was a huge fan of graphic novels and comics, so Boudewijn designed the artwork with a similar vibe. Overall the artwork symbolizes Jeroen’s legacy being caught in the eternity of time. He may be gone, but he is never forgotten.


V: 你们的音乐主题是什么?你们想通过这样的音乐主题表达什么?你们还创作了歌词部分,这些歌词是谁写的?他的灵感来源是什么?


What is the theme of your music about? What do you want to express through such musical themes? You also created a lyrics section, who wrote these lyrics? What was his inspiration?


J: 除了唯一一首用荷兰语填词的歌曲“Storm en Drift”外,所有歌词均由主唱Janneke撰写。如果你想知道歌曲的主题,这里有一个简要的概述:“Liberation for the Damned”讲述的是自恋者的故事,他们表现得好像自己是这里的主人,好像自己是国王,以任何他们认为必要的方式操纵着周围的人。但是一旦到了迫不得已的时候,他们却无处遁形。“The Age of Pariah”讲述的是如今的世界似乎是多么混乱,更重要的是,没有人再真正倾听彼此的心声。每个人都有自己的观点并认为无论如何,他们都有权发表自己的意见。这样做的弊端是听不进别人的意见,别人也听不进自己的意见。结果就是每个人都认为自己是对的,其他人都是错的。“Walk The Plank”是我们唯一的海盗歌曲。这首歌是根据Marlies Dekkers的内衣系列改编的,哈哈。Janneke:"这首歌是我在需要新胸罩时写的,当时我不知道去哪里买。不知怎的我偶然发现了Marlies Dekkers并从那里订购了两件文胸。当它们送到时,盒子里还有一本精美的目录,上面展示了以女海盗为主题的整个系列。就在那时我萌生了创作“Walk The Plank”的灵感,它至今仍是我最喜欢讲述的故事之一。“Storm En Drift”是唯一一首用荷兰语作词的歌曲。这是我们对家乡乌得勒支dB's这样的独立地下场所的爱的宣言。有趣的事实是:“Storm en Drift”曾为2021年发行的“Plagued - Decibels for dB's”合辑录制。“Facts And Figures”讲述的是Covid-19大流行病和正反两方面的故事:有人说这是个骗局,也有人说这不是骗局。“Payback Is A Bitch”讲述的是Janneke的一位前乐队成员真的把她和其他前乐队成员害惨了的故事(不同的乐队,不同的时间)Janneke:"这个人向我们许诺了一切,让我们相信他是真心实意地想把乐队带向何方,但事后才发现他的意图是假的,他想做的只是把我们推向另一支乐队。现在我已经不像以前那样生气了。在写这首歌的过程中,我也学会了放下愤怒,专注于未来。最好把过去留在属于它的地方,留在过去”。


All lyrics – except Storm en Drift, the only song with lyrics in Dutch - are written by our lead vocalist Janneke. In case you wonder what the songs are about, here’s a brief overview: Liberation for the Damned talks about narcissists and how they act like they own the place, as if they were kings, manipulating those around them in any way they feel is necessary. But when push comes to shove, they are nowhere to be found. The Age of the Pariah is about how confused the world seems to be these days and how, more importantly, nobody truly listens to one another anymore. Everybody has an opinion and feels like they are entitled to voice that opinion, no matter what. With the downside of not listening to others and nobody else listening to them. Resulting in everybody believing that they are right and the rest of the world is wrong. Walk The Plank is our only pirate song. And it is based on a Marlies Dekkers lingerie collection haha. Janneke: “I wrote it around the time I needed new bras and I didn’t know where to shop. Somehow, I stumbled upon Marlies Dekkers and ordered two bras from there. When they arrived, a beautiful catalog was also in the box, showing the entire collection, based on female pirates. That’s when the inspiration hit me to write Walk The Plank and it is still one of my favorite stories to tell.“ Storm En Drift is the only song with lyrics in Dutch. It’s our declaration of love to the independent, underground venues like dB's in our hometown Utrecht. Fun fact: Storm en Drift was previously recorded for the “Plagued - Decibels for dB's” compilation album, released in 2021. Facts And Figures talks about the Covid-19 pandemic and both sides: the ones saying it was a hoax and the ones saying it wasn’t. Payback Is A Bitch is about a former band mate of Janneke who really screwed her and other former band mates over (different band, different time). Janneke: “About someone who promised us the world, made us believe that this person was genuine about his intentions of where to take the band, only to find out afterwards that those intentions were fake and all this person wanted to do, was to stick it to another band. I am not as pissed off about it nowadays as I was before. Writing this song also helped me in the process of letting go of the anger and just focussing on the future. Better to leave the past where it belongs, in the past.“


V: 你们是自己发行专辑的,为什么选择自己发行专辑而不是找正规唱片公司代为发行?


You guys released your album on your own, why did you choose to release your album on your own instead of looking for a proper label to release your album for you?


J: 事实上,我们确实在寻找合适的唱片公司,甚至与一两家唱片公司进行过谈判。但最后我们决定在我们事业的这个阶段,最好还是自己动手,DIY式地完成一切。我们尝试有机地发展,看看在预算有限的情况下能做到什么程度。毕竟我们都不是靠Beyond the Pale谋生的。


Actually, we did look for a proper label and even negotiated with 1 or 2 labels. But in the end, we decided that at this moment in our career it would be best to do everything by ourselves, DIY-style. We try to grow organically and see where we can take it with a limited budget. After all, none of us earns a living with Beyond the Pale.


V: 我看到你的介绍中有一件很伤感的事,那就是你的吉他手在演出过程中突发心脏病去世了,这件事我相信对你一定有很大的打击,但我还是想通过你了解这位成员,当然,你可以选择不回答这个问题,因为我不希望你能够在沉默中承受痛苦!


I see that there is a very sad thing in your introduction, that is, your guitarist died of a heart attack in the course of the performance, this thing I believe that you must have a big blow, but I still want to know this member through you, of course, you can choose not to answer this question, because I don't want you to be able to be in the silence in the pain!

Thank you for your sympathy. I think we explained most of this tragedy already when answering questions 2 and 5. But yeah, Jeroen was one of the founding fathers of Beyond the Pale and rightfully so created what we like to call ‘JeroenMetal’ as a genre. His death was a devastating blow. He will forever be remembered as a kind, loving, wonderful guy with a heart of gold. After the passing of our beloved friend and guitarist Jeroen two years ago, we soldiered on with Boudewijn as our only guitarist. Later, we realized we did need to take that sound up a notch and we got Michael Schoemaker from Monster (and formerly of Warchitect) to rehearse with us on a couple of occasions. It was already clear from the start that he would not join our band permanently. A few months later, Geoffrey came across an interview Janneke did and shot her a message via FB, asking if we were still looking for a second guitarist. We were and he came for an audition, mainly to see if he would fit within the group. Musically, we were sure he could do it. It turned out he was a good fit and has been with us since. He’s really part of the team now.

First of all, congratulations on the release of your latest album "Monument in Time" this year. You are a very traditional band, with neat, classic riffs. Your tempo is not very fast, but kept at a medium tempo. Your works are not only influenced by the Death Metal style, but also by the Thrash Metal style, which makes your works more listenable. The singer's performance is definitely the most insidious and vicious I have heard this year, deep and powerful. You performed very well on the drums, with precise and stable blows that make your work even more exciting. However, you said that the band was influenced by some black metal. I don't quite agree with this because I really didn't hear any black metal elements. Haha, what do you think of your work?


J: 谢谢您的积极评价。当然每个人从音乐中听到的东西都不一样。如果你听不出任何black metal 的影响,那也没关系😊。我们相信我们的音乐有多重含义,在很多层面上都有意义。也许这张专辑最重要的信息是,音乐能建立牢不可破的纽带。这张唱片是对失落和韧性的宣泄。


Thank you for your positive review. Of course, everyone hears something different in the music. If you don't hear any black metal influences, that's okay 😊 We like to believe that our music has multiple meanings and bears significance on many levels. Perhaps the most important message of this release is that music forges unbreakable bonds. This recording serves as a cathartic expression of loss and resilience.

Although your band is very young, you have participated in some live performances. Which live performances left a deep impression on you? Can you describe the atmosphere at the scene?

The very first time we performed live on stage again after Jeroen’s death was exactly one year later, on April 27, 2023. Although Beyond the Pale is a very young band, your playing experience and live performance show that you are a very mature band.
