Today we are introducing the heavy/Doom Metal band Wizards Of Hazards from Finland. Founded in 1989, Wizards Of Hazards was originally named Black Wizard and officially renamed Wizards Of Hazards in 2014. After the renaming, the band did not immediately release any works until 2020 when they began creating and releasing their first EP album "Blind Leads the Blind" and their first official album "End of Time". "End of Time" was released by the famous Finnish label Inverse Records, and in 2023, the band released their second official album "Supernatural" on Inverse Records. The album band pays more attention to elements from the 1970s, giving a very retro feeling, with exciting Riff, The slow pace and steady performance of the drummer can be said to be the two points in the entire album. The singer's singing also left a deep impression on people. In 2025, the band released their latest single "Too Late" on Inverse Records. At the time of the release of the new single, the magazine contacted the Wizards Of Hazards band for an exclusive interview!

Thanks Wizards Of Hazards for agreeing to this interview. Greetings to everyone in the band! This is probably your first interview with Metal magazine from China, right?

W: 感谢你邀请我们！是的，你说得对：这是我们第一次。

Thanks for having us! Yeah and you are right: this is the first time for us.

V: 首先，我很好奇Wizards Of Hazards这个名字背后的含义。你为什么给乐队取这个名字？

First of all, I'm curious about the meaning behind the name Wizards Of Hazards. Why did you choose that name for your band?

W: 几十年前，我们以BLACK WIZARD的名义开始。但后来互联网出现了（笑），我们发现有太多的乐队名为black wizards，所以我们开始寻找一个新名字。但很难放弃我们的魔法，所以我们唱了一首名为WIZARDS OF HAZARDS的歌，我们接受了这首歌，再也没有回头。

Well we started under the name BLACK WIZARD decades ago. But then the internet came (laughs) and we figured out that there were just too many bands named black wizards, so we started to look for a new name. But it was hard to give up that wizardry of ours, so as we had done a song called WIZARDS OF HAZARDS, we took that and never looked back.

Before we start talking about music, I'd like to know a little more about the band's history. How did the band members meet? Did any of the band members have experience in other bands before Wizards Of Hazards?

W: 是的，我们或多或少都做过音乐。但WIZARDS的东西一直都在那里。我们唱了很多歌，过去常常把它们拼成三首歌，因为我们三个人从小就认识。我们也做了一些演出，作为一个三人组。2016年，我们邀请了Amir，他从学校就认识Ville，加入我们的低音。当时，我们也更改了乐队名称。Amir为乐队带来了新的活力，几年后，我们录制了首张专辑"End of Time"。

Yeah, we all done music more or less. But this WIZARDS thing has always been there. We did lots of songs and used to jam those as a three piece, as the three of us knew each other from early childhood. We did some gigs, too, as a trio. In 2016 we asked Amir, who knew Ville from school, to join us on bass. And at that time we changed the band name as well. Amir brought fresh energy to the band, and within a couple of years we recorded our debut album End Of Time.

On July 9 this year, you released your latest single, “Too Late” I listened to this song before it’s TOO LATE. This song continues your previous style, but also has some differences. It has very heavy, catchy riffs, as well as very melodious and lyrical passages. Can you introduce the theme of this song? What did you want to express through this song?

W: 谢谢，现在查看WIZARDS永远不会太晚，哈哈！这一切都始于最初反向播放的即兴重复段。但在Ville的脑海里，它一直在翻转。当我们最终以另一种方式尝试时，一切突然变得有意义。groove锁定，能量点击，歌曲找到了它的真实形状。“Too Late”有一个信使的方面，它给每个人敲响了警钟，是对当前全球正在发生的事情的真实见证。。

Thanks, and it’s never TOO LATE to check in on the WIZARDS, lol! It all started with a riff originally played in reverse. But in Ville’s head, it kept flipping around. When we finally tried it the other way, everything suddenly made sense. The groove locked in, the energy clicked, and the song found its true shape. TOO LATE has a messenger aspect on it, it’s a wake up call to everybody, a true doomy testimony of what is globally happening right now..

V: 在2020，你发布了你的全长专辑“End of Time”。这是一张有点复古感觉的金属专辑，将Doom metal旋律与Progressive Metal素相结合。我想知道你什么时候开始制作这张专辑的。你能告诉我们你的歌曲创作过程吗？

In 2020, you released your full-length album End of Time. It's a metal album with a somewhat retro feel, combining doom metal melodies with elements of progressive metal. I'd like to know when you started working on this album. Can you tell us about your songwriting process?

Glad you’d pointed out the progressive side, we try to put some hooks here and there. That retro vibe comes organically, because of the songs in EOT are dated back to the early years. We liked the idea of doing our music in a raw, live music like takes, so we did it in full analog signal chains. Those songs are made for one guitar only because of the trio era, and we wanted that retro vibe to be heard. For example all the Petri’s drums are one take only. Our songwriting goes usually so, that we have riffs which Aarne composes with guitar as a demo song usually with the lyrics and melody lines. Then we get together and everybody brings their own part to it.

In 2023, you released the album Supernatural. The album has exquisite production. Which studio did you record the album in? Who was responsible for mixing the album?

W: 我们在芬兰拉彭兰塔的Astia工作室制作了“Supernatural”专辑，第一张专辑“End of Time”也在那里制作。我们的制作人是Astia的老板Anssi Kippo，他也负责混音。Anssi一直在Bodom和Viikate等乐队背后工作，所以这对我们来说是一个非常容易的过程。我们学到了很多关于类比的知识，Anssi在这方面是一个真正的巫师。

We did the SUPERNATURAL album on Astia-studio, Lappeenranta Finland, the first album END OF TIME is done there too. Our producer was Astia’s owner Anssi Kippo, who did the mixing aswell. Anssi has been working behind bands like Children of Bodom and Viikate, so it was a very easy going process for us. And we learned a lot about analogy, Anssi is a true wizard on that area.

There is a very positive energy in your songs. I would like to know what themes you explore in your lyrics.

W: 谢谢，我们也努力在现场表演和音乐业务中关注正能量。但歌词来自过去的时代，古老的信仰和故事，带有阴郁的原始厄运时代主题。也从现在开始，人类不时地让我们经历绝望。

Thanks, we try to focus on positive energy in our live performances and music business as well. But the lyrics come from bygone times, old beliefs and tales with a gloomy proto-doom era theme. And also from nowadays despair that mankind puts us through from time to time.

V: 2021年，你发布了一张名为“Black Wizard”的EP。我在Metal Archive上看到，乐队在2014年之前被称为Black Wizard。这张EP上的歌曲都是Black Wizard时代的吗？

In 2021, you released an EP titled Black Wizard. I saw on Metal Archive that the band was called Black Wizard before 2014. Are the songs on this EP all from the Black Wizard era?

W: 是的，这三首歌可能是我们目录中最古老的一首，我们已经对它们进行了很长时间的干扰，而且每次都越来越好。这张EP的名字是对我们的根和三重奏时代的致敬。

Yeah, those three songs are probably the oldest ones in our catalog, we’ve been jamming those for ages and they get better and better each time. The name of the EP is a nod to our roots and trio era.

V: 你在2014年解散了一段时间，然后在2020年进行了改革。我很好奇你当时为什么决定解散乐队？是什么促使你进行改革？

You disbanded for a period of time in 2014 and then reformed in 2020. I'm curious to know why you decided to disband the band at that time? What prompted you to reform?

V: 你的音乐有Doom Metal和其他重金属流派的元素。你能分享一下哪些乐队对你影响最大吗？

Your music has elements of doom metal as well as other heavy metal genres. Can you share which bands have had the biggest influence on you?

W: 模拟时代的所有乐队，大多是70年代和80年代的Heavy Metal乐队。我们甚至不知道我们属于Doom类型，直到反向唱片公司给我们贴上了这个标签。当然，我们听各种各样的音乐，但Sabbath和那种祖先给了我们最好的氛围来做我们的事情。

All the bands of analog era from, mostly 70’s and 80’s heavy metal bands. We didn’t even know that we belong to doom genre until Inverse Records put that label on us. Of course we listen to all sorts of music, but Sabbath and that kind of ancestors give the best vibes to do our thing.

V: 你的声乐表演非常独特，将Heavy Metal的攻击性与高度的可识别性相结合。你能分享一下哪些艺术家在声乐表演方面对你影响最大吗？

Your vocal performance is very distinctive, combining the aggressiveness of traditional heavy metal with a high degree of recognizability. Can you share which artists have had the greatest influence on you in terms of vocal performance?

W: 谢谢。Ville喜欢听几十位来自不同流派的伟大歌手，多年来他们一直激励着他。除了Ozzy, Dio和Gillan这样显而易见的人，还有Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey和Marvin Gaye。但说到WIZARDS OF HAZARDS，Ville并不想听起来像其他人：这只是关于音乐带给他的东西，以及他内心的巫师喜欢唱歌的方式。

Thanks a lot. There are dozens of great singers from various genres who Ville loves to listen to and who have inspired him over the years. Besides the obvious ones like Ozzy, Dio and Gillan there´s also Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey and Marvin Gaye, for example. But what comes to WIZARDS OF HAZARDS, Ville doesn't mean to sound like anyone else: it´s just about what the music brings out of him and how The Wizard within him likes to sing.

V: 你的舞台服装很酷！他们像中世纪的巫师，非常独特。我很好奇你舞台服装背后的灵感。谁想出了这个主意？

Your stage outfits are very cool! They resemble medieval wizards and are so unique. I am curious about the inspiration behind your stage outfits. Who came up with the idea for these?

W: 这是一个共同的决定，因为我们都是乐队的粉丝，拥有巨大的舞台布景，如Kiss、Iron Maiden等。我们都见过足够多的乐队穿着牛仔裤和T恤演奏。所以我们问自己，我们更喜欢哪一个：一个简单的音乐实验，还是一个有一点额外东西的实验？这很容易。我们认为你应该为你的舞台表演付出努力，服装是其中的重要组成部分。

It was a mutual decision based on the fact that we all have been fans of the band with gigantic stage sets like Kiss, Iron Maiden etc. And we all have seen enough bands playing in jeans & t-shirts. So we asked ourselves which one do we prefer: a plain musical experiment or one with a little bit something extra? It was an easy one. We think you owe the fans to put an effort into your stage performance and outfits are an important part of it.

V: 乐队2025年的计划是什么？你想表现得更好，还是花尽可能多的时间来改进你的工作？

What are the band's plans for 2025? Do you want to perform more, or spend as much time as possible refining your work?

W: 到目前为止，我们一直在努力制作这张专辑，拍摄视频等。这将需要到2025年底，所以我们几乎没有时间举办演出。但今年也有一些人来了。然后计划在新专辑发行后进行巡回演出，希望不会太久，你迫不及待地想在专辑完成后听到它！

We been working hard with the album so far shooting video etc. And it’s going to take the end of the year 2025, so we’ve got very little time to throw gigs. But there is a couple of those coming, too, this year. And then plans of touring along the new album when its out, hopefully not too long thou, can’t wait to hear it when it’s finished!
