今天采访到的是一支来自美国 / 捷克两个国家成员组建的一支Brutal Death Metal乐队Emasculator，该乐队成立于2021年，由四名女性成员组建，虽然是四名女性成员但是都是参与过很多支著名乐队的成员，比如Cartilage, Muldrotha, Feast, Necromantic Decay, Dreaming Dead，PoonTickler，Nidorous, Unfathomable Ruination, Abnormality, Castrator, Parasitic Extirpation，Harboured, Last Word, Oak, Ash & Thorn等等乐队，在城里不久之后乐队便发行一张两首歌曲的Demo作品“Depraved Disfigurement”，得到更多人的关注，同时也得到了美国著名厂牌New Standard Elite的关注，不久之后乐队与New Standard Elite签约，2024年发行了第一张EP专辑“The Disfigured and the Divine”，一张快速，精准，残酷的作品，快速连续的Riff并且编曲方面有很高的技术含量，鼓手Cierra White惊人的速度不逊色任何一名男性鼓手，歌手Mallika Sundaramurthy的演唱低沉有力，让整张作品更加的残酷，野蛮，在新专辑发行之际我也与Emasculator乐队取得联系进行了一次专访！

Today's interview is with Emasculator, a Brutal Death Metal band formed in 2021 by members from the USA / Czech Republic. The band was formed in 2021 by four female members, who are all members of famous bands like Cartilage, Muldrotha, Feast, Necromantic Decay, Dreaming Dead, PoonTickler, Nidorous, Unfathomable Ruination, Abnormality, Castrator, Parasitic Extirpation and many more. Feast, Necromantic Decay, Dreaming Dead, PoonTickler, Nidorous, Unfathomable Ruination, Abnormality, Castrator, Parasitic Extirpation. Harboured, Last Word, Oak, Ash & Thorn, etc. Shortly after the release of the two-song demo ‘Depraved Disfigurement’, the band gained more attention, as well as the famous American label The band signed with New Standard Elite and released their first EP in 2024, ‘The Disfigured and the Divine’, a fast, precise and brutal piece of work. The fast and continuous riffs and technical arrangements, the amazing speed of Cierra White on drums, which is as good as any male drummer, and the low and powerful vocals of Mallika Sundaramurthy make the whole thing even more brutal and savage. I got in touch with Emasculator for an interview on the occasion of the release of the new album!

Hi sis, nice to meet you, thank you so much for taking part in this interview, I think this is the first time you guys have been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, first of all say hello to your fans in China, Emasculator was formed in 2021, it's a very young band, you guys come from two different countries, the Czech Republic and the United States, how did you guys come up with the idea of forming this band?
E: "Emasculator”取自Mallika为她之前的乐队写的一首歌。离开那个乐队后，她想突破界限和其他女孩一起创建一个Brutal Death Metal乐队。她找到了我和Cartilage乐队的Teresa Wallace，那时我是一个主要在YouTube上上传翻唱的吉他手。一开始只有我们三个人，直到我们在Instagram上发现了Cierra。面试后我们都被吓到了，我们觉得必须让她加入我们的阵容。
“Emasculator” was taken from a song title Mallika had written for her previous band. After leaving that project, she wanted to push the boundaries and create a brutal death metal band with other girls. She reached out to Teresa Wallace of Cartilage and me, a guitarist who mostly posted covers on YouTube. Initially, it was just the three of us until we discovered Cierra on Instagram. After her audition, we were blown away and knew we had to have her in our lineup.

In 2024 Cierra, the drummer, joined the band and this also transformed you guys into a band with real drums, how did Cierra join the band? Are you happy with her work?

We are overjoyed with Cierra’s performance both live and in the studio. “Age of the Goddess” completely transformed from our demo version to the final release thanks to Cierra’s playing. Cierra is one of the most professional and motivated drummers any of us have worked with. Not only is she skilled, but she is constantly working to build on her craft, which is a quality every great musician has.
V: 你们乐队的录音非常棒，你们在哪个录音室录制这张专辑？你的专辑是哪个制作人制作的？新专辑的录制过程如何？
Your band's recordings are excellent, what studio did you record the album in? Which producer produced your album? How was the recording process for the new album?

The album was mixed and mastered by Josh Welshman. He is known in our scene as the vocalist of Defeated Sanity but Josh has worked with a variety of artists from Norah Jones to David Crosby as well. The album was recorded in various studios since we are long distance.

Each member of your band is an experienced musician in creating extreme metal, can you describe your creative process? I'm sure your creative experience will inspire a lot of young musicians!

The process is a bit different for us all. Mallika is a writer and already had the themes and lyrics mapped out before the music came into fruition. She decided on the vocal patterns after the music was written. Teresa and I wrote on our own, and sent riff ideas back and forth until we all found a song structure we were all happy with. Cierra would send ideas for the drums and we would ask her to add in certain things if necessary. The process will change and vary from album to album until we find what’s most efficient and produces the best result. We hope one day the writing process can be as easy as us all jamming in one room. But for now, the internet makes anything possible!

Violence, Revenge is your musical theme, why did you choose this musical theme and what do you want to express through this musical theme? You also wrote the lyrics, who wrote the lyrics and what was her inspiration?

Our musical theme is not violence or revenge. Our musical theme is centered more around reclamation of one’s autonomy and being resilient. Although our name is “Emasculator” none of our lyrics are misandrist as some seem to assume. We’re about empowering women, not about degrading men. If men feel degraded by strong women, that speaks more about them than it does us.

Your logo design is beautiful who designed this logo for you, your album artwork is also very unique, especially the new album artwork that has just been released is very unique, who designed this artwork for you, does the new album artwork have any meaning?

The logo was done by Serge Rhino, guitarist of Epicardiectomy. The album art was painted by our vocalist Mallika Sundaramurthy. The album art does have a lot of meaning behind it. To give it in short, the art is an interpretation of Chhinnamasta. She is a powerful tantric goddess who transcends the cycle of life and death. She can be interpreted in many ways. She willingly decapitates herself to provide nourishment for her devotees.

Your band's new album this year is on the prestigious US label.New Standard Elite, a great label in your country, how did you get in touch with them to collaborate? How did you get in touch with them to collaborate?

A few of us were already in contact with Ryan Baker and NSE. Mallika’s previous band Nidorous was signed to New Standard Elite. Myself, I worked for Roger Beaujard’s record store in Las Vegas and met Ryan from being around the shop. I helped package a lot of the demos that New Standard was releasing and became acquainted with him. Ryan reached out to us about Emasculator and we already had a professional relationship built on trust. He understands our creative vision and has been wonderful to us.

Firstly, congratulations on the release of your latest EP ‘The Disfigured and the Divine’, one of the best things I've heard this year, and even though you're an all-female band, you've got to compete with a lot of male bands for better, continuous, fast riffs! oftentimes, and the addition of Cierra adds a lot of colour to your new work, making it even more soulful, and the singer's vocals compare favourably with a lot of male vocalists, how do you feel about your work?

We are very happy with the outcome of the EP. We put a lot into it and it’s a great feeling to be able to see the fruition of this labor of love for extreme music. We are excited to continue writing and releasing more music.

What are some of the new things you're working on in 2024 in addition to releasing new work? Can you reveal some information to the group?
E: 2024年即将结束，但我们举行了我们的第一场演出，发布了我们的新EP并发布了我们的单曲mv。这是我们第一次能在一起，2025年我们有很多激动人心的计划。已经宣布的两个分别是：Obscene Extreme和在欧洲的Nice To Eat you fest。
2024 is coming to a wrap but we played our first show, released our new EP, and released a music video for our single. This was the first year we were able to all physically be together. We have a lot of exciting plans for 2025. Two already announced being: Obscene Extreme and Nice To Eat you fest in Europe.
V: 你去过哪些音乐节或现场表演，哪些现场表演或音乐节给你留下了深刻的印象，你能描述一下气氛吗？
What festivals or live shows have you been to and what live shows or festivals have impressed you and can you describe the atmosphere?
E: 在过去的十年里，我们都看过无数的演出，它们都因为不同的原因而被我们所喜爱。Texas Domination Fest对我们来说很特别，因为这是我们的第一场演出。我们和Devourment， cutting Savior， Gorgasm和epiccardiectomy一起演奏。这是我们最好的首演了。能和那些激励我们的乐队一起演奏真的是一种荣誉。
We’ve all been to numerous shows in the past decade and they all hold dear to us for different reasons. Texas Domination Fest is special to us because it’s the first show we played. We got to play alongside Devourment, Severed Savior, Gorgasm, and Epicardiectomy. We couldn’t have asked for a better first show. To play alongside bands that have inspired us is truly an honor.
V: 虽然现在有很多女性音乐家加入了极端金属乐队，但女性乐队仍然很少见，你们是如何进入极端金属音乐的？你能告诉我们你最喜欢的乐队吗？哪些乐队影响了你？
Although there are a lot of female musicians joining extreme metal bands nowadays, it's still very rare for an all-female band, how did you guys get into extreme metal as a music? Can you tell us about your favourite bands? What bands have influenced you?

Women in extreme metal is becoming more common and we’re happy to be a part of that. People like Som Pluijimers of Cerebral Bore, Lori Bravo of Nuclear Death, Runhild Gammelsæter of Thorr’s Hammer, helped pave the way for women in extreme music. Our vocalist Mallika has also been playing extreme metal for 20 years now and is an inspiration and motivation for the rest of us girls. There are also some newer female artists kicking ass like Bridget Lynch the vocalist of “Stabbing”, Dee Vicious from “Self Absorbed” and the girls from “Final Girls”. There are lots of badass women kicking ass in extreme music. Although it’s still somewhat rare, we’re still here having fun expressing our feminine rage with extreme metal.
V: Emasculator是一个非常年轻的乐队，但是你们很有前途，我会一直关注和支持你们的乐队，我也希望通过这次采访，让更多的中国粉丝关注和支持你们的乐队，最后你有什么想对中国粉丝说的吗？
Emasculator is a very young band, but you guys are very promising, I will always follow and support your band, and I also hope that through this interview, more Chinese fans will pay attention to and support your band, do you have anything you want to say to your Chinese fans in the end?
E: 我们希望在不久的将来把这种暴行带到中国，并沉浸在你们丰富的文化中。感谢您周到的采访！
We hope to bring the brutality to China sometime in the near future and indulge in your rich culture.
