今天采访到的是来自法国的一支Death Metal / Hardcore乐队Death Whore，组建于2019年的Death Whore乐队受到了Hardcore和Death Metal影响，由于疫情封锁直到2020年乐队才发行了第一张EP专辑，第一张EP成功发行之后乐队更换了一些成员之后2022年乐队发行了第二张正式专辑“Total Teutonic Torso”，今年乐队发行了第一张正式专辑“Blood Washes Everything Away”，这是一张以硬核朋克、外壳和污泥为燃料的死亡金属唱片hardcore-punk，crust，sludge和Death等元素的影响，给人一种全新的感觉，在新专辑发行之际乐队创始人Fabien与杂志取得联系进行了一次专访！

Today's interview was with Death Whore, a French band based on Death Metal/Hardcore. The band was formed in 2019 and was influenced by Hardcore and Death Metal. Due to the pandemic lockdown, the band did not release their first EP album until 2020. After the successful release of their first EP, the band changed some members and released their second official album "Total Teutonic Torso" in 2022. This year, the band released their first official album "Blood Wash Everything Away", which is a death metal album fueled by hardcore punk, shell, and sludge elements such as hardcore punk, crush, sludge, and Death. Impact, giving people a brand new feeling, on the occasion of the release of the new album, the band's founder Fabien contacted the magazine for an exclusive interview!

Hello Fabien it's nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview, I guess this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine? First of all a big hello to all the Chinese fans, when did Death Whore start? How did you form the band?

Hi, nice to meet you too! Indeed, this is my very first time with a Chinese magazine, and I’m really happy to introduce my band to Chinese fans. It's very exciting. Thank you so much for the opportunity! Death Whore was created at the end of 2019, just before the pandemic lockdown here: we barely had time to play live once! At first, we played metallic-hardcore influenced music, which you can hear on our very first EP released in 2020. Then, it took some time to stabilize the line-up and refine our style. We released another EP, Total Teutonic Torso, in 2022 with the current line-up, which I think is the stylistic bridge between the first EP and our album. It was a natural evolution leading to our debut album Blood Washes Everything Away, a Death Metal record fueled with hardcore-punk, crust, and sludge. This is truly who we are. I'm glad we released those first two EPs — they helped us find ourselves.

V: 你们乐队的成员都是第一代成员吗？你换过会员吗？新成员如何加入乐队？老成员为什么退出乐队？

The members of your band are all first generation members? Have you ever changed members? How do new members join the band? Why did the old members quit the band?

F: 起初，我们是一个四人乐队。Thomas弹吉他，Pat弹贝斯。Thomas搬到了德国，就在那时，我们决定继续作为三人，在我们的第二张EP中，Pat离开了乐队，向我们介绍了Antoine，Antoine与Gorgor（我们从一开始的鼓手）一起完成并稳定了我们的三人组。我们仍然是每个人的朋友！我真的很喜欢权力三人组的能量，有一种自由和简单的感觉，每个成员都是必不可少的。这是我在Motörhead、ZZ Top或Celtic Frost等乐队中一直钦佩的东西。

In the very beginning, we were a four-piece band. Thomas played guitar, and Pat was on bass. Thomas moved abroad to Germany, and that’s when we decided to remain as a power trio. On our second EP, Pat left the band and introduced us to Antoine, who completed and stabilized our trio with Gorgor (our drummer from the beginning). We’re still friends with everyone! I really love the energy of power trios, there’s a sense of freedom and simplicity where every member is essential. That’s something I’ve always admired in bands like Motörhead, ZZ Top, or Celtic Frost.

V: 你能描述一下你的创作过程吗？

Can you describe your creative process?

F: 创作过程是非常协作的。大多数时候，我会带一首有想法和即兴重复段的完整歌曲草稿，然后Gorgor和Antoine会添加他们想播放的任何内容。我们排练了很多，尝试每个人的想法：试错法，老派的方式！通常，我会在歌曲结构确定后写人声，但我总是在手机上记下歌曲标题或想法。

The creative process is very collaborative. Most of the time, I bring a full draft of a song with ideas and riffs, then Gorgor and Antoine add whatever they want to play. We rehearse a lot, trying ideas from everyone: trial and error, the old-school way! Usually, I write the vocals after we finalize the song structure, but I always note down song titles or ideas on my phone.

V: 你的专辑录制得很好，你是在哪个录音室录制的？哪位制作人制作了你的钻机专辑？你们刚刚发行了新专辑，新专辑的录制过程顺利吗？

The recording of your album is outstanding, what studio did you record the album in? Which producer made your rig album? You guys just released your new album, is the recording process for the new album going well?

Thank you so much! Actually, we record everything at our drummer Gorgor’s studio. He recorded and mixed every record we’ve done, including Blood Washes Everything Away. We really value doing as much as we can by ourselves: we love working on our band. The album was mastered by James Plotkin, a long-time collaborator and one of my favorite musicians (he plays in Khanate, Scorn, OLD, and worked with Thou, Conan… he’s done so much).

V: 你的乐队Logo很漂亮，是谁为你设计的，你的专辑封面很漂亮，尤其是今年的新专辑封面，是谁给你做的？

Your band's logo is beautiful, who designed it for you, and your album artwork is beautiful, especially this year's new album artwork, who did the artwork for you?

The logo was made by Christophe Szpajdel, aka the Lord of Logos! It was the very first logo we had, and I think it will stay with us for life. I love it. He has created logos for so many bands — it’s mind-blowing. He even did the original Emperor logo! He also worked on logos for one of my favorite movies, Mandy by Panos Cosmatos (we actually sampled this movie on our new album). The artwork for our first two EPs was done by Szymon Siech, a very talented and prolific illustrator. For Blood Washes Everything Away, we wanted a different approach since this was our first full album, and it's different from the two EPs. We asked Ethan Lee McCarthy, aka Hell Simulation, singer-guitarist of the crushing band Primitive Man, to create something for us. He accepted and made this awesome artwork! I think it really captures our style while being unique. I absolutely love it.

What is the theme of your music about? Why did you choose this musical theme and what do you want to express through this musical theme? You also created a lyrics section, who wrote these lyrics and what was his inspiration?

F: 我写了所有的歌词，我尽量不要想得太多——这主要是我写作时的想法。一旦我有了大致的想法和思路，我就会重新修改它们，直到它们听起来很好。回首过去，我会说我主要写两件事：我多么鄙视生活在一个极端资本主义的世界里，以及生活本身的荒谬和无稽之谈。我深受无政府主义著作和塞缪尔·贝克特的影响（我从他那里学到了很多，我是他的忠实粉丝）。一切都被包裹在讽刺和讽刺的语气中。..因为这就是我！

I wrote all the lyrics, and I try not to overthink them too much — it’s mostly what’s on my mind when I write. Once I have the general ideas and lines, I rework them until they sound good, simply. Looking back, I’d say I write mainly about two things: how much I despise living in an ultra-capitalist world, and the absurdity and nonsense of life itself. I’m very influenced by anarchist writings and by Samuel Beckett (I take a lot from him, I’m a huge fan). Everything is wrapped in a sarcastic and ironic tone... because that’s simply who I am!

V: 你与Duality Records、Specific Recordings、Crypt of Dr.Gore和Hecatombe Records发行了新专辑，你是如何与这些唱片公司合作的？你对这个厂牌的工作满意吗？我知道你有自己的厂牌，你为什么不选择在自己的厂牌上发行这张专辑呢？

You have released new albums with Duality Records, Specific Recordings, Crypt of Dr. Gore and Hecatombe Records, how did you get connected to work with these labels? Are you happy with the label's work? I know you have a label of your own, why didn't you choose to release the album on your own label?

F: 是的，我有自己的厂牌No Good To Anyone Productions，我和其他4个厂牌一起参与了"Blood Washes Everything Away"的发行！我喜欢为我的发行尽我所能。我真的很钦佩Hardcore Punk的道德，如果我能自己做，我会去做。我认识并与Duality and Specific合作过很多次，所以他们成了朋友：对我来说，和他们一起发行第一张专辑是非常合乎逻辑的。我特别为这次发行找到了Crypt of Dr.Gore和Hecatombe，我很高兴找到了他们！他们都是非常热情的人，这就是我发行专辑所追求的一切。每个人都100%参与其中，对场景：我们不是大公司，只是普通人，努力将Punk和Metal场景变为现实！

Yes, I have my own label, No Good To Anyone Productions, and I participate on the release of "Blood Washes Everything Away” with the other 4 labels! I like to do everything I can for my releases. I really admire the hardcore-punk ethics, if I can do it myself, I'll do it. I knew and collaborated with Duality and Specific numerous times, so they became friends : it seemed very logical to me to release this first album with them. I found Crypt of Dr. Gore and Hecatombe specificly for this release, and I'm glad I found them! They are very passionate people, and this is everything I look for to release our album. Everyone is 100% involved and passionate about the scene: we are not big companies, just normal people trying to do our best to bring to life the punk and metal scene!

First of all, congratulations on the release of your band's new album “Blood Washes Everything Away”, a Death Metal meets Crust Punk effort, very Old School, with neat riffs, ferocious power, and drums! The drums are fast and steady, the guitars are fantastic and the vocals are fantastic.

F: 非常感谢。这真的意味着很多。这个记录直接来自我们的内心！

Thank you! It really means a lot. This record comes straight from our guts and hearts!

V: 你的乐队在哪些节日演出？哪些节日给你留下了深刻的印象，你能描述一下气氛吗？2025年，你的乐队计划参加哪些节日？

What festivals has your band played? What festivals have impressed you and can you describe the atmosphere?2025 What festivals are your band planning to attend?

F: 到目前为止，我们主要在俱乐部演出，但我们渴望在第一张专辑中扮演更大的舞台！我可以说的是，我们一直受到观众的好评。每次我们在家乡演出，我们都会看到非常年轻的歌迷，以及三四十岁的人，他们通常来自Death Metal、Hardcore或Grindcore。我认为我们能把所有这些充满激情的人聚集在一起真是太棒了。

So far, we’ve mostly played in clubs, but we’re eager to play bigger stages with this first album! What I can say is that we’ve always been well received by the audience. Every time we play in our hometown, we see very young fans coming, as well as people in their 30s or 40s, often from death metal, hardcore, or grindcore backgrounds. I think it’s awesome that we can bring together all these passionate people.

Death Whore is a very good band, I will always follow your band, and I hope that through this interview, more Chinese fans will follow and support your band, and finally do you have anything to say to Chinese fans?

Thank you so much for this opportunity, it was a real pleasure! I’m amazed that our music can travel so far and reach China. I really hope we’ll be able to play there in the future, we would absolutely love that!
