Driven by his passion for progressive metal and progressive rock, Federico, the guitarist of the Italian folk metal band Folk Metal Jacket, formed his own metal project and named it Waxwolf after his own nickname. Since its formation in 2015, Waxwolf has been active for a decade. Federico writes all the songs himself, refining them on his computer using software and inviting various musicians to record the final tracks. In Waxwolf’s music, the influences of classic 1970s progressive rock and 1990s death metal are clearly evident. In September 2025, Waxwolf released their latest full-length album, Magic Madness Sadness. Notably, this album features Linus Klausenitzer, the bassist from Alkaloid, and drummer Hannes Grossmann, who handled percussion, mixing, and mastering. This outstanding album skillfully blends classic progressive rock and death metal elements, resulting in songs that are fluid and beautiful. Federico shared his creative insights from the past decade and his unique perspectives on progressive music with Volcano Magazine.

Hello brother, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let me say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. Waxwolf band was founded in 2015 and is an experienced band. How did you form this band in the first place? Did the band name it after yourself?

F: 谢谢你，兄弟，我也很高兴见到你，向全中国问好！这个乐队的创建是因为当时我在FolkMetal Jacket（FMJ）乐队演奏主音吉他，我创作的音乐是更Progressive Death Metal/ Prog Rock，不适合FMJ，所以我决定只和我一起创建一个单独的独奏项目，这样我就可以写和录制我想要的东西。乐队的名字实际上来自FMJ的人在我第一次试镜时给我起的绰号，当时我在脸书上被称为Federico“Lupo”Di Cera，他们看到后大喊“蜡狼！”。所以，是的，在某种程度上，我以自己的名字给乐队命名，这是一个独奏项目。

Thank you Brother, really nice to meet you as well, a big hello to all of China! This band was created because at the time i was playing lead guitar in the band FolkMetal Jacket (FMJ), and i was composing music that was more progressive death metal/ prog rock and did not fit with FMJ, so i decided to create a separate solo project with just me so that i could write and record what i wante. The name of the band actually came from the nickname that people in FMJ gave to me when i first auditioned, at the time i was called Federico “Lupo” Di Cera on Facebook, and they saw that and shouted “The Wax Wolf!”. So yeah in a way i named the band after myself, being a solo project and all.

V: 乐队里唯一一个，所以根据自己的想法创作歌曲会更方便。你能介绍一下你的创作过程吗？

You are the only one in your band, so it will be more convenient for you to create songs according to your own ideas. Can you introduce your creative process?

Thanks for this very good question. I would say that most if not all of my creative process is based on the program “Guitar Pro”, now i am using the 7 but i started with the 5. I spent many thousands of hours just writing notes on a computer keyboard. Sometimes the song starts with a guitar riff, when i am just noodling. And then i think “hey this is a good riff” and then i sit at the PC and i don’t touch the guitar again until the entire song is finished. I tend to write part per part, so for example i write an intro, complete it with bass, guitar, drums and all other instruments, then i go to the next part. The next part usually is something i think in my mind, it usually comes without searching, i’m a big believer of Wu Wei (i hope this is correct无为). I usually finish a song in a day or two of 8 hour in front of the pc. Then i might not write anything for a couple of months. I usually never correct or change anything after it has been written, the song is more important thant me, it was created that way. I might alter the song when i am recording it, maybe adding vocals (that i don’t write on guitar pro) or changing some leads. I am interested in my mental state while i am writing the song. Some alterations may have occurred in the past.

V: 你们乐队的专辑录音效果很好。你在哪个录音室录制了这张专辑？哪位制作人为你制作了这张专辑？

Your band's album has excellent recording effects. Which studio did you record the album in? Which producer made the album for you?

I recorded guitars in my home with a scarlett solo 4e (i am thinking about upgrading it), but the rest of the instruments have been recorded in the different musicians houses.I commission many people using fiverr and then they send me the results. I do most of the synth sounds myself, but in this album i had Damiano Della Torre record on a real Hammond, Moog and Rhodes. Notably, the drums have been recorded by Hannes Grossman in his Mordor Sounds Studios, who is also the producer who made mix and master on all all my recent records. He is a fantastic musician and producer. Also notably, the bass has been recorded by another great musician, Linus Klausenitzer, and really contributed to elevate the rithms section

You formed a band in 2015, but your work was only released in 2018. What caused you to release your album three years later?

F: 我认为 Waxwolf 的起步时间甚至更早，我记不太清了，当时我还在上高中呢，哈哈，有些数据可能有误。我后来才开始发布作品，因为当时我没有钱，而且我认为真正的第一张专辑是"Our Love"，因为我开始工作后才得以录制这张专辑。我先写作，然后等我有了钱再进行录音。

I think Waxwolf started even earlier, i don’t remember really well i was still in high school ahah some data could be wrong. I started releasing later because i didn’t have the money, and also i think that the real first album is Our Love, that i could record because i started working. I write, and then when i have the money i record.

V: 你们的标志设计非常简洁，但我最喜欢这种风格，因为这样很容易记住你们的名字。这个标志是谁设计的？你们的专辑封面设计也非常独特。这些封面是谁设计的，它们代表什么含义？

Your logo design is very simple, but this type of logo design is my favorite because I can easily remember your names. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork design is also very unique. Who designed these album artworks for you, and what do they mean?

The logo is my interpretation of the Catuṣkoṭi, and was Drawn by Gaia Carlesso, a very talented Comic artist who also worked on the previous cover arts. Now i work with Helvetica Blanc, another very talented artist that i think can capture the mood i want to convey. The cover art is like an added layer to the music, you listen while you watch it and it gives another meaning. What do they mean? I don’t know, maybe they mean something very profound but my brain just gave the ideas to me and didn’t explain, i just reported to the artist and they translated the idea of my brain into reality.i don’t really interfere much in the art process, i trust the artists and i think i give precise enough indication that they can work and then refine on my request. The cover art for Our Love also references a comic i made some years ago with Gaia, that may be available somewhere around the internet but i don’t really know where.

V: 信息、生活、灵性是你的音乐主题。你为什么选择这个音乐主题？你想通过这个主题表达什么？你还创作了歌词部分。这些歌词的灵感来自哪里？

Information, Life, Spirituality are your music themes. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. What inspired these lyrics?

F: 我努力为这个世界做点有意义的事。世间有太多错误，太多糟糕的事情。我本可以成为那种只会抱怨个没完的人（作为意大利人，我抱怨得可是一流的啊哈哈），却不提供任何解决方案。我认为，如果我们专注于重要的事情，整个地球都会变得更好。歌词其实是后来才想到的，我主要关注音乐本身，但我确实在想，如果非要表达些什么，那就让它传递一份关于美与爱的讯息吧。我的灵感源自东方哲学、新柏拉图主义以及托马索·坎帕内拉的著作“The city of the sun”。

I try to be useful to the world. There are a lot of errors, a lot of bad things. I could be that guy that just complains and complains (as an Italian, i am very good at complaining ahah) without giving an alternative. I think that if we focus on important things we could all be better off as a planet. The lyrics are almost an afterthought, i am mostly interested in the music itself, but i was really thinking that if i need to say something, let it be a message of beauty and love. I am inspired by eastern Philosophy, Neoplatonism and the works of Tommaso Campanella “The city of the sun”.

V: 你是如何与目前签约的厂牌nikiya Record建立联系并展开合作的？你对该厂牌作满意吗？

How did you establish contact and collaborate with Wanikiya Record, the brand you are currently signing with? Are you satisfied with the job at this brand?

F: 这家唱片公司更像是一家公关公司，它确实做到了宣传中所承诺的一切，我对此很满意。我是通过一位意大利金属乐队的歌手了解到这家公司的，当时他和我一起在健身房锻炼。

This Record company is more of a PR firm, it did its Job as advertised and i am satisfied. I found it through the singer of an italian metal band who was working with me in a Gym.

V: 首先，恭喜你在2025年发行了新专辑。你的作品包含了许多元素，这使得编曲更具技巧性，旋律也十分悦耳。你亲自包办了所有乐器的演奏和表演，这表明你是一位才华横溢的音乐人。你对自己的作品有何看法？新专辑与旧专辑之间有什么变化吗？

First of all, congratulations on releasing your new album in 2025. Your work has a lot of elements, which makes your arrangement more technical and the melody very pleasant. You have undertaken all the instruments and performances yourself, which shows that you are a very talented musician. What is your opinion on your work? Is there any change between the new album and the old album?

F: 说得更准确些，我只负责录制吉他部分，但所有乐器的曲谱都是我写的。Hannes和Linus负责各自乐器的编曲，有时会对原谱进行大幅修改，因此他们对作品最终的呈现效果也做出了巨大贡献。我觉得专辑越做越好，但还没达到我想要的效果，它们永远都达不到我想要的程度。我觉得专辑发行后我就没法再听自己的音乐了，因为录制时我会反复听上几百遍，所有瑕疵都了如指掌。录制期间我处于一种狂热的状态，但发行后我得有几年不听，这样才能重新喜欢上它哈哈

Just to be precise, i only recorded the guitars, but i wrote the tracks for all the instruments. Hannes and Linus arranged for their instrument, sometimes changing what was written a lot, so they made a big contribution as well for the final feel of the product. I think the album are getting better and better, but not yet how i want them, they are never how i want them. I think i can’t listen to my music after i release an album, because when i record i listen to the tracks hundreds of time, i know all the errors, when i am still recording i am in this kind of manic state but after it is released i have to take a couple of years of not listening to it so that i can like it again ahah

V: 你参加过哪些现场演出？其中哪些给你留下了深刻印象？能否介绍一下当时现场演出的氛围？2026年你计划参加哪些现场演出？

What live performances have you participated in, and which ones left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the atmosphere of the live performances at that time? What live performances are you planning to participate in in 2026?

F: 我从未和Waxwolf一起进行过现场演出，但和FMJ一起演出的次数很多。我记得我们经常开着小车行驶数小时，到达目的地后搬运所有设备，然后四处查看场地，也许喝几杯啤酒，接着在登台前感受那股肾上腺素飙升的感觉。我真的很怀念那段时光。在意大利，演出前我们大多吃披萨，但有时也会吃酒吧、酒馆或音乐节主办方亲手烹制的意面。记得有几次演出结束后，如果能留宿不用开车回家，我们都会喝得酩酊大醉。

I have never made live performances with Waxwolf, but i made many with FMJ. i remember that we were driving for hours in our small cars, reaching the place, moving all the stuff and then going around to check the place, maybe drink some beers and then the adrenaline before going on stage. I really miss that. In Italy, before the concert most of the time we ate Pizza, but sometimes pasta cooked by the owners of the Pub/Bar/festival. I remember some times after the concert we got very very drunk if we could stay the night and didn’t have to drive home.

V: 你是一位才华横溢的音乐人，我将一直关注并支持你。我也希望通过这次采访，能吸引更多中国粉丝关注并支持你。采访即将结束，最后你想对中国的粉丝说些什么吗？

You are a very talented musician, and I will always pay attention to and support you. I also hope to attract more Chinese fans to pay attention to and support you through this interview. The interview is coming to an end, do you have anything you want to say to Chinese fans at the end?

F: 非常感谢，我真的很感激这一切，你们一直如此善良，我想告诉我的中国粉丝们，即使在人工智能和社交媒体的时代，如果你想做音乐，你依然可以做到，为了自己而做，为了音乐本身而做。学会演奏乐器固然很好，但掌握数字音频工作站（DAW）的使用，协调不同乐手，以及处理混音和母带制作等，这些都会帮助你作为音乐人和作为一个人得到成长。我不会撒谎，这完全不赚钱，事实上每张专辑我都在亏钱，但幸运的是我现在有一份工作，只要做出一些牺牲，我就能继续做下去，但我不会停下来，只要我能，我绝不会停下。我想Bandcamp在中国可能无法访问，所以我想把我的所有音乐免费分享给大家，既然作品已经发布，请大家随意传播。另外，今年九月我将开始录制一张名为"Brain Food"的新专辑。

Thanks a lot, i really appreciate everything, you have been so very kind, i want to tell my Chinese fans that if you want to make music, even in the era of artificial intelligence and social media, you can, do it for you, do it for music itself. Learning an instrument is already great, but learning how to use DAWs and coordinate different musicians and manage Mix and Master etc really helps you develop as a musician and as a person. I will not lie, there is zero money involved, i actually lose money every album but fortunately now i have a job and with some sacrifice i can continue doing it, but i would not stop and i will not stop if i can. I think bandcamp is not available in China, so i want to give you all my music for free, since it already is there, please distribute it as you see fit. Also, this september i will start recording a new album called Brain Food
